    Novice riders, my wife and I walked into Tom's Bike Shop in Tulsa, Oklahoma and were set up with two Giant Cypress Sts. That was over 15 years ago and, with periodic replacement of cables, tires, etc., we're still riding them. We both think it was the best investment ($218 each) we ever made.

      My dad bought a Trek Navigator 200 a little over 23 years ago, and he still rides it. It cost $250 new, we still have the receipt.

    I have a 22' Giant Cross City and it is the same bike except for colour. I am a big guy, about 280lbs and the only issue being the wheels are 24 spoke and I was breaking spokes on the rear wheel. My LBS and Giant covered it and fitted heavier gage spokes and they've been good since. All up it's done about 700miles and I am very happy with it.

    Excellent job on the video. This bike the way described looks fabulous. I've been riding steel road bikes for 36 years and this is a nice looking hybrid bike with wider tires.

    I love mine. I bought it for touring on a variety of conditions, mostly paved but occasionally on gravel and mud. The tires are perfect for my need, not too aggressive that they slow you down but ready to go a off road if needed. Needed a more upright bike than a conventional touring bike and I couldn't be happier. The geometry and flat bar make for a very comfortable all day ridable bike. I find the gearing to be perfect for me for climbing (while fully loaded) and for a comfortably speed on flatter roads. The disk brakes are perfect and have plenty of grab even when I have the bike fully loaded for a many day ride. I love all the mounting brackets. For a basic bike, I couldn't be happier. Really nothing on here I feel I need to upgrade with thousands of miles on it.

    Modern hybrids like this and the Trek FX bikes remind me of the fully rigid mountain bikes in the late eighties and early nineties ie good practical and comfortable all rounders without the excess weight of suspension. I wish I’d got one sooner!

    i have the escape 3 which I use to commute 9 miles each way to work through pavement, rocky/gravel trail trail. It works great. 34t cassette can make it up all grades. Shifts smooth. The v-brakes work great. I got it brand new 2024 on sale $325.

    Nice bike. I was recently in the market for a fitness hybrid and ended up choosing the Specialized Sirrus X 4.0 Yes it costs twice as much, but front derailleurs are just bulk and clutter imo. Such a pleasure and so much cleaner to ride a 1X drivetrain. Also for the extra $750 got a carbon fork, and a bit of suspension up front. I get it though for price point this is fantastic.

    • @susrev88
      @susrev88 Рік тому +1

      i think you'd be surprised to find out that 1x systems are barely lighter than 2x systems, because in case of 1x you'd need more gears in the backs. there is no significant gain in terms of weight, however, the front derailleur can't fail if you don't have one at all.

    I have an older Escape that I've ridden in three "Mountains to the Coast" rides in NC, twice the whole way. I also took it to New York for the Five Boroughs Ride, and to SC for the first Bicycle Across South Carolina ride. If there's a better hybrid bike out there I've yet to ride it.

      What bike did you trade to? I have an older Escape 2 that I bought 2nd hand and am debating between purchasing the newer Escape or Fastroad (Not sure when the 2023 models will be available in my country, so looking at 2022 editions.)

    • @lazylonewolf
      @lazylonewolf Рік тому

      @@snoozefesties Dunno if you got a new bike by this time, but Fastroad is a tier above Escape with a price to match it (startingabout $1000). I don't like the proprietary D-Fuse seatpost for the Fastroad though even if they're supposedly more comfortable.

    Very nice bike. Nowadays there's a lot of competition in this segment (fitness). This Giant Escape, however, allows a wider tire. I think it'll take a 45mm whereas many others are sub 40.

    Hello James! I've been wanting to have this Giant Escape bike for so long, and I wanted to change the handlebars to dropbars. I'd like to ask which shimano microshifters are compatible for the 2x8 Shimano Altus groupset? Since my dream bike is a hybrid-road-commute type of bike for long-distance ridings and biketouring/bikepacking. Thanks a lot!

    I have a Giant Escape 2 with rim brakes. Honestly, the older version is better than the new one. It has 3x8 gearing, which does not put extra strain on the chain. It came with a 28/38/48 hollotech 2 front crankset, which is better than this prowheel squaretaper double crank. Having just one plate in the front puts the maximum strain on the chain. Having 2 or 3 plates on the crankset puts much less strain on it, since the rider can change the plate size depending on what terrain he is riding. Also, rim brakes are much cheaper and easier to maintain than disk brakes.

    The lowest gear ratio is 0.88... which is pretty good, not quite as low as a mountain bike. I wouldn't call it "super" low. I think super low would be < 0.80.

    Asked this on your roam video, but if anyone would like to chip into this comment - I'm torn between the roam 2 and escape 2. I want a bike that can do most (yes I know MTB will suck on roads there has to be compensation - that argument). But if I want to go a bit more off-road casually on some trails but also for fitness on roads/ 'poor' country roads would the roam be better for me or should I get the escape and put some slightly chunkier tyres on it?

    3x has less wear. More chainring to spread the wear, less cross chaining which wears the cassettes like mad as well as the chains.
    1x also typically has narrower chains that don't like to crosschain and you can't use chain breakers to reassemble chains

    • @ondrejmanych5688
      @ondrejmanych5688 2 роки тому +1

      thats why you use a chain master link. And 3x is heavier and more complicated. To be honest, I would rather replace my chain more often and benefit from these things than carrying two extra chainrings that I wont use very often anyway...
