Deer Hunting Blind 5' x 6' - Insulated (Economy Build)

- This blind tour is to give you some ideas on how to build a deer hunting blind without breaking the bank - if that can be done anymore with lumber prices the way they are!
The platform/base is constructed using 12 foot 2x6's and 10 foot 2x6's cut in half. This size allows you to get by with utilizing just one sheet of 3/4' Plywood or OSB for the floorboard.
This is my Brother's hunting blind, which my Dad built for him. It's a great design and I plan to make an instructional video on how to build one very similar to this.

After I receive it, I set it up and left it outside at home for a couple of months to let it start smelling more like outside than human. So far I've been very happy with it. Very roomy - I hunt alone but could easily fit another person comfortably. Put one bolt through the shoot-through mesh, and works as advertised. I've ordered another one, so this noob is totally satisfied. One caveat - the included stakes are pretty useless; you'll want to order something more substantial. I haven't had it long enough to rate durability, but zero issues so far.
What brand did you decide to buy?
Nice little blind. All I need now is my rifle, a thermos of coffee, a good Tom Clancy novel and pocket full of Snickers

Nice building! I like the camo style pint on it. My father in law ( up near you in the Pound area) extended the floor of his stands to have a small landing in front of the door. This allows for easier access into the shack. Also, for when it REALLY cold, he put a little buddy heater inside with a connection to a 20 lb gas tank out on the landing. Great for keeping warm while you wait for light to open the windows. Great job, looks like some good shooting area around you.

I like this one. We've built similar about the same height off ground except ours were mostly open, no sliding windows, just short walls and a top. Carpet on the floor for quietness. Also, we concreted our 4x4 posts a couple feet into the ground, more stability. I like the camo on this one too.
I have one almost identical to this, definitely put carpet on floor bit remove after season, make dam sure it's sealed up or mice will get in and reak havoc with your insulation, definitely paint the inside black or camo, good luck nice blind!
This blind is very similar in size to the one I built. Mine has a trap door entrance and sliding plexiglass windows. I also use a Lil' Buddy propane heater. For ventilation, my sliding windows have a 3/8 inch gap at each end. I was a little apprehensive about an unvented heater in such a small space, but I have used it for years with no problems. I also rigged up a little hot plate on top of my heater to boil water for coffee, heat soup, etc. I really can't tell that the deer detect odors. I have filled my two tags every year since I built it. And it sure is nice to be dry and cozy warm no matter the weather.

Looks good Brett! Not to pick apart your work , but I noticed right away where the tip of your ladder is resting against the frame of blind. My suggestion would be to add another board to catch more of the ladder rails. If those edges gave way you might face plant into something. Just not enough wood there? Again just my observation and hope to help you save an injury from occurring!
Thank you for watching and for pointing that out. The ladder doesn't have a whole lot of lean to it, so most of the weight force is directed downward, but it would be a wise and easy mod to improve safety. I appreciate your comment Roger!
paint the inside a dark color..I had deer and turkeys bust me in my similar blind..painting it a dark color will camo the inside and hide your movements

Or even cheaper and quicker staple some camo mesh netting inside the walls.
Very nice economic box blind. I'm in WI too and the winter cold is starting to get to me so its time for a box blind.
I still prefer hunting in a ladder stand, but when it's really cold or windy (or both), it sure is nice to still get out hunting and not be miserable!
I'm an armchair deer hunter.It means I don't hunt.Hunting would be a great pastime. My Dad was legally blind and diabetic.It would be near impossible for him to roam the woods yet alone use a rifle.I LOVE your deer blind!!
We were thinking about building something like that. Do you have a problem with water getting inside the plywood walls and the cabin?
So far, no problems with water intrusion. The plywood (OSB) overlaps the base so water cannot get in.

I DID THE SAME BUILD BUT IT'S 23 FEET IN THE AIR UP AGAIN'ST A BIG PINE TREE AND CHAINED TOO IT HAVE BEEN HUNTING OUT OF IT SINCE 2016 WORKS GREAT

I used the same windows. if yours start to stick and make noise when opening, i found that running some all purpose grease along the track fixes it right away. happy hunting
Nice ,good place to hunt lunch and nap! At my age ,,naps are important! Lol
We had problem with animals chewing T 111 and used Crib Halt to stop them. Crib Halt is used for horses.

There are tens of thousands of these across Germany. Very comfortable and effective stand hunting.
I’d recommend flap style windows held open with struts.
Carpet the floor and walls with any old stuff from the dump if you are short on $s and add some shelves below the windows for your ammo, muffs, binos.
Paint the inside flat black or put black outdoor carpet. Nice build
Any problems with high winds? How would you suggest to anchor one to the ground?
Wind will blow them all over eventually. T -posts pounded in at the corners and tied to them is easiest. Cables down to mobile home anchors is a good way to go too.
Had a prefab blind like this in GA. The mud dauber wasps found every possible entrance. Had to spray it day before every hunt. The stink of the bug spray detracted from the experience. And mud daubers will bite you.
We get wasps here in the summer but they aren't a problem by the time deer hunting season rolls around. Ever tried hanging a brown paper lunch sack in there or an old wasp nest?

Yes, roof felt (tar paper), but IDK if it is really necessary.
I'd turn the bottom into a sleeping/cooking/potty room... Wouldn't leave it all season..
You should paint it black inside to be dark and harder to be noticed..
Brett......I need your opinion.......I have ask several DIY people here on UA-cam that build their own blinds. And no one can agree on an answer. So, I figured I would ask you.
On a 6x8 tower stand, wrapped with OSB, house wrapped, then wrapped with used roofing metal all the way around.......should I fill the ribs with expandable foam to keep bugs and mice out? Or, leave them open incase of condensation so air can dry it out? It is built like a house. Literally. I even put baffles in the ceiling above the insulation and put soffit on it so it can breathe. Plus a heat vent......and on and on. So it's built right. I just can't decide on the ribs. Any opinions?
In my opinion, it would not be neccesary to fill the rib voids with foam, unless some of the metal rib end openings allow critters to crawl up and get right inside somehow. It sounds like you built it right, so that should not be an issue. You might get a few bugs up the ribs but it seems very unlikely that rodents will crawl up a rib, chew through the house wrap and also the OSB. It helps to never leave food inside your blind also. It wouldn't take much foam to just plug the ends of the ribs but you'll likely make a mess doing it and again, it isn't neccesary IMO.

Those are sliders. Menards specials right off the shelf. My nephew shot a nice 9 point out of this box two days ago with his compound bow! Thank you for commenting & good hunting to you.
Carpet on the floor for sure. Used tin on the outside saves tons ! Artificial1 xmas tree branches to conceal the windows I just saw a nice stand on Facebook wanted $3500. Their spendy do ur homework !!

The perimeter is 2x6 but the 5' joists in between are 2x4.

Have you tried bow hunting out of it?
It's my brother's blind. He's taken a couple of nice bucks out of it, with a crossbow. It would be awfully tight to shoot a compound bow from in there though.
@@UncleBucks yeah them dimensions would make it hard to draw a compound bow. I'm just getting some idea of the dimensions I should make mine and what dimensions would be good so I can draw my bow back.
@Foust74 go at least 6x6 then. That's a pretty good size, unless you are a really big guy, then go 7 or 8 feet.

@Foust74 FYI, I have how-to-build videos on my channel for a 6' octagon and also a 7' hexagon. Both have really great layouts for vertical bow hunting, with the hex having the extra room inside.
I did not think the gova mint let yous skys up north use fire arms they are afraid you might shoot somebody
That's why they make us wear orange during gun season. It helps us not shoot each other - most of the time.
Really nice blind thanks for the video! Too quick questions if you don't mind. Any idea roughly how much it cost you for the material? Also do you leave the windows closed until you see something coming in and then quietly slide them open? Just wondering if that would spook the deer
You're welcome! I'm just going to guess that you would spend around $800 or so for everything you see there. The windows stay shut if it's really cold or windy, but open most of the time otherwise. Opening them without spooking deer usually isn't a problem. It can be a bit tricky if it's completely calm and they are very close.
In actuality there is no need to camo a shooting house deer. Will see that there is a huge square siluett. But they will get used to,it being there. I've hunted from the ground. And killed deer no further that 10 yards away from me. They dont see coulors like we do its movement and sound. That they key in,on. Fact is they don't use there since of smell much either. Fact I seen one fellow get about 5 yards . away from a deer he was bow hunting on,the ground. And That takes real skill unlike hunting from a blind. ,,
I hunt in ladder stands, climbing stands, on the ground and in a box when it's really cold. I agree on paint color or scheme, doesn't really matter after it's been there a while but a deer depends on its sense of smell, at least as much as sight and sound if not more when it comes to detecting danger.
The paint is more for keeping the wood from absorbing moisture than anything else put camouflaged paint scheme is just a personal preference
A ground blind is less expensive and as comfortable as yours.”

Because nothing says 'cozy' quite like freezing inside an outhouse on stilts in the middle of a frozen wasteland. No thanks.
I'm thinking you live somewhere in the south....? Between box blinds and ice shacks, we are holed up for weeks, maybe even months over a year if you add up all the time!

The corners creat some big blind spots! When you factor ten to twelve inches solid wall in the blind, at 100 yards away you’ll have a hundred plus feet of zero vision. Any deer walking towards you, you’ll have a hard time seeing!!
Definitely! A relative of mine hunts out of this stand so he can decide to leave it or improve on the blind spots. On a similar blind I hunt from, I recently cut out some wall sheeting in the corners and screwed lexan on the outside and caulked around the perimeter of it. It made a huge difference for seeing better and not missing deer!
