Take some piano lessons from Scott Houston “The Piano Guy.” In this video, Scott and his guest David Tolley, demonstrate how to play The Beatles classic hit, Yesterday. David describes how he personalizes the tune by beginning with a single note melody line. Then he demonstrates how you can fill in by adding chords by rolling up the notes that comprise the chords. Later he uses block chords instead of the rolling chords for a little variety.
David also reveals some techniques to add interest to the right hand melody part. He shows you how you can to add grace notes, run ups (arpeggios) and octaves just to name a few.
Some of the left hand variations shared include: block chords, oompahs, arpeggios and a changing of the rhythm.
Scott’s life goal is help you learn to play piano through piano lessons that you can take anywhere and at any time to get you started having some fun at a piano or keyboard as quickly as possible.
Scott Houston is the host of The Piano Guy television series on Public Television and has taught hundreds of thousands of folks like yourself, how to have some fun on their piano or keyboard. He wants to help you get there too-as quickly as possible.

He can play!! Great feel
When I first glimpsed this video, I thought, "Gosh, that Steve Jobs had his hand into everything, some kind of multi-talented genius." Then i realized it was a different guy in the black sweater.
Nice video.
This piece ' Yesterday ' played by Mr.David Tolley is really awesome.Someone that knows how to play with feelings and really apply the melody within the open chords.Really great. Well done, and thanks for posing the video.
this is a work of art. It's just beautiful. Thank you.
Can't believe it....I saw this video a while ago and recently came back...and then, having just watched you on Johnny Carson...here you are. Really enjoy your playing. Hope The Tonight Show helped your career.
That being said...... I dream of the day i can play something so beautiful. Wonderful job with song.
I need lots of practice, but I think I can get there, with a bit of "noodling around" here and there.
Wow what an incredible pianist. Played wonderfully
This was so much better than the popular Utube format of camera on the keyboard, cuts to a shot of a white-board with scribble, back to the keyboard. This format is much closer to.the real thing; being in the room with the teacher.
Thank you Again Steve, I love the iPod
Best drinking song ever when first distributed. Now, along with Elenor Rigby, it has entered into the Beatles Book of Hymns. Both still work in performance for me, so thanks for posting so I can see and hear someone else's concept of Yesterday.
figyelem, mint száz szemű légy! egy-két ujjmozgás, mindig ragad rám!!!
kösz, Thank You!!!!
11 min in. Amazing! Just amazing
That was beautiful !
Nicely done, Scott!
'Great pianist, he gotta lot'a stuff in his pocket' !!
......That ...... was ......... excellent.
I liked the 'jazz thing'. :)
10:49 ends with adding the G to the Fmaj chord (F2 or Fadd9), your classic Disney pop sound..
Is there any chance of getting the sheet music of THIS exact version ? Would be great !!! :)

Me too
Great channel, great idea
Yesterday in F
Great touch !!! THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!
+Demetrio Castillo You're welcome!
At 10:44 he adds the A to the BbM (making BbM7) -- very nice sound.
good tips, and that was a really interesting arrangement........pretty Ballin'
Great channel.
Too many rolled chords sounds kinda dorky 9:23, but the arpeggiations with the added color notes like the 2nds at 9:37 sound lovely!
so many great ideas...love it! I'm inspired (:
9:06 Skip to the entire piano solo. Covers like this are really nice. Not too much and not too little.
wow. i wish some of the licks were explained. the basics were explained well and then he just started throwing down. the left was going wild and all he said was not to make it muddy down low. who didnt know that after trying a triad down there for the first time? It would have taken forever for him to explain his strategy, but it still could have been better. thanks for sharing, none the less.
"Hi David!"
that LEFT HAND THUMB ACTION!!!!!!!!!
i promote the idea of having a forum that examines music performance, so I like this clip. But I would just say that after a certain level, if someone wants to really wants to play, they should pick out whats being played by EAR! I certainly wish someone told me that a while back--i'm in my early 20's, 10-15 years ago they wouldn't have to.
9:10 the beginning of the whole tune
Music sheeet please! I'd love to play that :D
9:10 You're welcome
I want to buy piano sheet that Mr.David Tolley played in video, please let me know the price and how to payment
There is no sheet music of that performance. He improvised his version on the spot at that moment in time, never to be played exactly like that again. I just mention it because that is very much the entire point of playing in the styles of piano that I play and teach at pianoinaflash.com Playing non-classical tunes is not an exercise in perfection or trying to re-create what someone else has played. Instead it is incorporating things you've heard others play, and adding it into the mix of whatever comes out of you hands as you have the freedom (by reading a lead sheet with chord symbols instead of verbatim notation) to kind of create "your" version of the tune on the fly, at that moment in time, never to be played exactly the same way ever again. That is the essence of music making and being a true musician vs. just a human player piano regurgitating something someone else created. Hope that helps in your understanding a little bit!
