How I got here: I saw the map for this game in a collection of hexmaps, usually for D&D. Had never heard of Barbarian Prince, and I had to learn more. Game looks fun, I'll have to give it a try. Thanks for the good video!
This came out in 1981 and Magic Candle came out in 1989. Maybe BP inspired MC? Wouldn't be surprised! During the early days most PC games were inspired by table top games.
I wanted to incorporate melee & wizard (fantasy trip) combat into this game for the longest time. I love this map and i think it can work great in that microquest style. quite a few things to consider tho, maybe i can do something now that i`m on vacations.
Did you ever incorporate that luchiop? Wondering if you found the time and if it worked out as you hoped. Fantasy trip was my first TTRPG back in the 80s.
As a teen in the 80s I played this and Star Smuggler at least a hundred times. Thanks for the memories. I don't know if it would find much of an audience, but I've always wanted to design my own similar game. I haven't finished that journey. Yet!
I love the sound of this game because even though it might be highly luck-based, I'm the kind of player who likes to create a story. Whether that be one of glory or tragedy doesn't matter as long as the game facilitates story-telling 😊 For those who are looking for something similar, but prefer a bit more luck mitigation, I suggest checking out Gloom of Kilforth. Great video!!! I'll definitely be printing this out one day soon 😊👍
perfect!!!. well made. I have been looking for a good source of info on BP.. ps - also.. with so many games to play and so many books to read this is THE BEST HOBBY ever ;). cheers. r
@@TheDungeonDive about a year and a half ago I told myself that I was going to stick with like 3 or 4 systems only max... lol guess how that worked out ;)
This game is killing me. Not sure how “fun” it is 😂 found some Dwarves, they joined up if I pay them, discovered a Dwarf location… in a swamp, found it and it turned out to be a huge Dwarf mine… rolled bad, lost all the money I had and am in jail with 4 Dwarfs… in a Dwarf capital city.., in a swamp.
Nice video and a good reminder of something that's readily available to play! Which map are you using there? It seems different to the BP2 PDF map (on BGG) and to the original BP map (from the Dwarfstar site). Is it the "Cleaned up one piece map" or "Yet another Barbarian Prince improved map." from BGG? If so, doesn't have the terrain legend down the left and it seems larger (which would be easy to do while printing).
I first came across Barbarian Prince in an article that called it "the greatest solo game of all time." After playing it, I don't think that guy has played another solo game in his life. It's tedious, combat is nigh impossible, and it's all 100% luck with zero player agency. I gave it exactly 3 plays and then traded it away. I am very glad that solo gaming has significantly evolved since 1982. I'm not sure how this is better than solo monopoly.
Which map is that? Doesn't quite look like the original, nor does it look like the version Todd Sanders made (though the players aids are the Todd Sanders revisions).
Please excuse any utterances of "Barbarian Vince." LOL. :)
We need a review of Barbarian Vince too! :)
His name is Vince.
Vince the Barbarian.
Real Fantasy right there!
I am one of those people who knew nothing about this game, so thank you for the intro.
This is THE game that introduced me to open world dungeon crawling. So many, many years ago. I loved it. - toby
Me too
Oh wow this looks better than I expected, so much depth! Definitely printing this out.
I still have my original box (minus the figure) - still like the game.
That’s awesome. I’ve never seen the original in person. Must be nice to have.

Huh. This was pretty cool. I'm glad you went through that dwarf encounter. This might just be worth the ink to print it out. 🧙♂️
Thanks for the introduction to this game, definitely going to check it out.
This one is right up my alley. Fantastic map and a great excuse to paint up a barbarian mini.
Been reading a fan site about this recently after getting back into FF games. Fun times.
You don’t need to print out very much… followed by ten things to print and laminate 😁 Still, awesome game and video!
Only two things required. Two books and 1 map.
Thanks for the video, I didn't know about this game. Incredible what just four printed colored hexsheets can do on the imagination 🙂
Sure thing!
Never heard of this .... now downloaded thanks Daniel!
Enjoy!
best explanation on this classic
Thank you. Appreciate it.
One of my favorites. Epitomizes 80’s gaming and fantasy. Very punishing. I cheered when we figured out how to beat it.
Do you have a reliable way of beating it?
@@TheDungeonDive the ruins are the key. You do encounters until you get magic mirror. Defeat your double and it doubles your money and items.
Awesome!
This reminds me of the old DOS game The Magic Candle... So many similarities.

Happy New Year! Thank you for providing us a great explanation of the game. I am looking forward to your next video.
Such a fun narrative experience.
Well done!
The Drifter will be coming soon!

I would totally play another game like this. Get cracking! :)

Love that game…. Weird combat system, but amazing if you use one of the fan made fighting rules.
Link to those fighting rules?
Link to rules please

Famous last words.
If you like this game, you'd probably like Source of the Nile by Avalon Hill, the exploration of Africa in the 19th century.
Thank you! I’ll look into that. I think that was also the basis for Rocky Mountain Man.
I downloaded this ages ago but would love to get a map printed for 32 mm models
Just print the map a little bit bigger!
@TheDungeonDive my god that's genius 🙌
I once read the manual and thought it was a little too intimidating... i dont know, maybe mage knight occupied all my brain space lol
Great video as usual Daniel. Have you tried any of the other free DS games? I have them all saved in a folder but not got round to printing them yet.
Thanks! I have not. I want to try the SF one this year.
I never heard of this before. I downloaded it but watching your video it does look a bit like “Admin : The Game”
It can be that, for sure.
Great video - I've heard about this game over the years but never given it a go. Keen to play it now. Would you say this is a simplified D100 Dungeon?
Simple in some ways, not in others.

Ironically I’m watching the video and I saw after the fact you got Dwarf followers too. You forgot to add the Dwarf location (I think).
Gotta roll with the punches. :D
Todd Sanders?

I thought this was the BP2 map. It’s been ages since I downloaded.
I'd also like to know the answer to this. Been looking for this map everywhere but can't find it!

Yeah. If you’re not into luck, this is the wrong game!
Which map is that? Doesn't quite look like the original, nor does it look like the version Todd Sanders made (though the players aids are the Todd Sanders revisions).
I’m not sure. I thought it was from the BP2 files on BGG, but apparently not. It’s been so long now that I’m not sure where it’s from. Sorry.
@@TheDungeonDive no worries. :) Looking forward to watching your video.
The map looks like a slightly 'aged' reworked version of the original map by VonMeister.
Hi man. Huge fan of your collection. When we will have a video dedicated to Myth?
Oh man. Who knows when I’ll open that can of worms. :)
