Hey, I'm glad Spilo has helped you. Maybe you are already familiar with Dr. K (healthygamergg), but if you aren't, the man is a fucking wizard when it comes to psychology, and all his stuff is backed by science. I played a game a couple nights ago, on Havana. Decided to go Widow, as one does. My team is barely out of spawn, heading to set up for defense, when my Mercy says in chat "if it's not working, please consider switching". Not directed to anyone, but you could tell it was directed to me, as the rest of my team were on more "normal" heroes. Literally nothing had happened yet in the match, and she was already saying, as non-toxically as she could, "I don't trust your ability."
I proceeded to play possibly the worst game I've ever played. Got deleted in the first minute by a Hanzo, switched to Hanzo myself, continued to get diffed hard. Tried Widow again, ultimately went Soldier at the Mercy's request, nothing worked. The rest of my team was also getting diffed. I thought for sure we must have been playing against smurfs, but I finished the match feeling like I was washed, absolutely a trash-tier DPS player, and went to bed right after. Thought I might never get to play Widow or Hanzo again, if I wanted to climb.
Went back yesterday to watch the review. Started from the Hanzo's perspective. He was... not that good. I mean, very decent, but definitely not a smurf -- a couple times when he deleted me they were just lucky shots. Okay, maybe the enemy Cass? No, he was worse than the Hanzo. What about my other DPS, what were they going through? Hmm, definitely struggling, but not playing badly either. Maybe a tank diff? Not really, the enemy tank might have been a bit better but we should have been able to make up for it.
But you know who _was_ playing terribly? THE *&@% MERCY ON MY TEAM. Spent the first half of every team fight literally AFK. Checking the scoreboard maybe, or I don't know, starting to type angry messages and then thinking better of it. But not even participating. And then when she did join the fight, she just played like she was sleepwalking. Zero thought, just yellow-beam (usually the tank) and stand back.
Taught me an important lesson, that game did.

The advice given here is a bit dangerous if generalized. There absolutely needs to be consistency in a persons game play to advance. Whether or not a few unlucky deaths and bad shots tilts someone for an entire day is an entirely different issue. Consistency is not something that should be looked at or analyzed under a microscope. Consistency should be gauged day-to-day or even week-to-week. Simply telling someone not to tilt or not to micro manage their game play is not specific enough. What needs to be taught is how to analyze game play over the long run to find and fix consistent issues.

MY PERSONAL best- reading a book for 30 minutes before playing comp. Whenever I read, I have the best game sense, my brain just works better- thoughts are clearer and I don't fall into autopiloting for longer etc... Also making a list of rules/reminders for my role- tank. Not playing in a bad mood/ when not feeling the BEST. Vitamins and nootripics (honestly believe that l-theanine works 200%, I'm very focused when I take it, and I broke multiple of my own records in Aimlabs the first day I took it)
I started doing all that only after I started losing ranks for the first time IN A YEAR (rank reset is not related) I almost got my previous rank back, and I believe now I will climb even higher, cuz now playing mindfully

I dropped from Gold 1 to Silver 1 because I can’t stop losing. I’ll have games where I go like 25-4, play nearly perfect outside of 1-2 teamfights, and lose and I’ll have games where I play like trash and still lose. If I have to play every single match without making a single mistake just to get a win then I give up on ranked. It’s just not fun to have to carry a piss poor tank that’s feeding or a fellow dps that’s running in 1v3-5 and forcing our team to snowball back from spawn.

Spilo I wanna say for me, your content transcends Overwatch. I've gotten back into OW this season semi casually/competitively, I mostly play comp but don't stress too hard about improvement or rank, and I normally like to just spend time with my friends on the game as well. I will say though, as someone who just recently started competing in collegiate Valorant, a lot of your videos have super good topics for the psychology and mindset of being a competitive gamer. This video could honestly be about any competitive video game and it would still fit, but it also has the bit of OW spice which I like. Also your video a while back where you did the interview with the sports psychologist was SUPER helpful and full of very useful information. Your content is super helpful man and I really appreciate it, and I will say if you ever are considering doing similar content but branching outside of OW for whatever reason I think you should, I think there are a lot of people outside of the OW community that could really benefit from watching your videos. But I can tell that OW is your bread and butter, and honestly, whatever games you are making videos on I'll probably still watch because I know its gonna have some really good information in it. Thanks Spilo

However I just dont really know how I would be able to do that? "Just stopping" has never worked for me. I am still left overthinking everything even this very decision to try to stop micromanaging. This way I am still not truly focused. Are there any tips on how to get out of ones own head at such times?

I hit diamond for the first time 2 weeks ago. I stayed there for 15-20 games and then deranked to plat 3. I definitely needed this advice.
The driving instructor analogy was perfect. My instructor was super laid back, and I vividly remember an incident where we had to take an exit on the highway, but I was in the far left lane with 500-600 meters to get to the exit. I was stressing and thought we'd miss it, but he just told me to calm down, and try my best to switch lanes as best as possible. I tried, and it worked. He then reminded me: "even if you did miss it, what's the worst that could happen? We just take the next exit?"
This mentality is something I can for sure bring to Overwatch: Sometimes you'll put yourself in a bad position and overtink things. It's best to just calm down and take it from there

When I play other characters, it's my aim or my positioning or the enemies caught me off guard. as ball I have moments that I just dont know what my options are, but I know I'm picking the worst one. I've had people much higher rank than me vod review some games and I walk away feeling enlightened, only to lose the next 3 games and not know the reason. It's interesting that overthinking is typically a trait of the intelligent, whilst simultaneously being a really stupid trait.
I'm fortunate enough to not have this trait, not that this stops people from wrongly telling me that I do. I'll lose five games in a row and not blame inconsistency, or even myself. There's a difference between seeing mistakes that you made that directly cost you the game (if it was a very close loss), and thinking that that makes the loss your fault or thinking that you played worse than usual. Your team mates will also have made plenty of mistakes that would have made the difference, and you will also make a similar amount of mistakes when you win games.
My point is: it's not about blame. Not on your own performance or on your team. If the game was very close, you all could have made the difference somewhere, not for example solely the person who played the worst. Think about how your mistakes in the game can be used to improve your play for future games. That goes for every game, win or loss. Overthinking is a trait of the intelligent simply because the dumb aren't capable of doing it, not because it's an intelligent trait.
P.S. The learning to drive analogy was perfect. I once had a very minor super low speed bump whilst completely ignoring my mum who was screaming at me to stop, because the only way I could drive was to literally block her out completely.

My experience is similar. Let me explain:
I´ve been watching your content. Super helpful and I am getting better as Tracer main. Now I have systematic reviews of my gameplay. For example: I want to practice on my short-off angles and timing.
So I play focused on those concepts. After the play session, I watch 4 or 5 replays. I analyze every team fight and see if I had a Short-off angle and good timing (and this takes just 30 extra minutes). That is it. Good right? Self-criticism, taking notes, and measuring progress. "Cool!!!"
Well. I realize I have consistent short-off angles and "good" timing". But I was losing over and over... Why? The conclusion at that moment was: My aim sucks. And because "my aim sucks" I was under stress... "Man, I am doing the right thing but I have zero impact because of my mechanics". So I started to play worse and worse. Ok, let's keep the practice and the analysis.
I watched some VODS and I discovered that those enemy players were bad. They even have worse mechanics. How I am losing?! What is happening????? So...
Two weeks ago I watched a coaching session and you said something about training mechanics in qp deathmatch. I´ve been training in that mode for 2 weeks, playing daily. 2 hours sessions (and zero comp matches. Just deathmatch focused on trigger discipline and blink usage). Simple.
Sometimes I play vs diamond players (right now I am stuck in G5. I was P3 in S8 and S9 with Soldier) in this gamemode and ngl, my performance is good/decent. How I am losing vs G5 players in the comp but I can perform well vs Diamond or Plat players in 1v1 in Deathmatch if my Tracer "sucks"? I mean, those players have good mechanics. In theory, my mechanics are horrendous. That was the first diagnosis.
Then I realized I was "obsessed" (micromanaging") with angles and timing and random things in comp. Overthinking basically. That's what you said in 3:02 - 4:27 I lost a lot of fights in comp because I was not focused on surviving, reacting faster, rotating, and facing the threat in front of me because in my head is happening:
"off angles, off angles. Timing. Oh, you lucky bastard. Oh, I am doing the right thing but I do not win. Oh, my mechanics. How is that possible. Ok, let's try again... Fuck, how that guy killed me??!¡!¡¡!?! My team is doing anything, I am in a short of angle and I die because... Ok, I am in a good angle, keep it, keep it. How I died???????" I mean, Yes, I was focused on important concepts but overthinking at the same time. No confidence in what I was doing. Just thinking, thinking, thinking.
In Deathmatch, I am focused on reacting with confidence, not "thinking". Basically, I discovered the overthinking trap in Deathmatch lol When I pay attention to the right thing I can do it. But I need confidence and to keep things simple.
Yes, my aim and blink usage are a little bit better now (I still have a lot of work to do) but the most important thing was discovering my overthinking issues.
Now, I am trying to repeat in my head:
"Short off angle. Timing. React." Do it again.

Yes you are getting kills, but that enemy was not a threat to your team. You need to focus on enemies that are more likely to eliminate your teammates and prevent that enemy from doing so. You might not get the elim on them, but you're distracting them and enabling ur teammates.
