- The 91-foot long Tug Singleton was towed to sea and sunk in 165 feet of water about 18 miles southeast of the Fort Pierce Inlet.
Workers prepared the tug for several months stripping and cleaning the vessel. Seawater was pumped aboard which took about an 40 minutes to fill. At 11:12 a.m. Tug Singleton slipped below the surface.
The freighter was acquired through private funding and federal grants. Crews and volunteers removed anything from the freighter which could have caused environmental damage.
Sinking coordinates will be final after a survey is complete, but it is located at approximately
My father “captain Ray Best” was the pilot for the Singleton for most of his career with Corps of Engineers.
As a child I have been on the Singleton many times, sad to see his life long vessel going under but as a reef it’s good for the fish and fisherman
We are cousins then! Hi. My mom is Charlotte Best.
Having sailed on several Navy warships ,thousands of miles ,and they always brought us home safely, there is
something sad about watching a ship, any kind of ship ,sink to it's final rest , like watching it's death ,sad ....
Nice video great quality, thanks for sharing👍👍
Thanks for this video
that's deep for a recreational dive
that tower would bring the top of the reef up to 100 feet? yeh, a little deep but that may also be part of the plan for well experienced divers. I imagine they had their reasons; may be near a shipping lane?
Why?
What you have witnessed is something called "reefing" this purposely sinking ships, aircraft and even tanks. After removing any harmful contents so they don't poison the ocean. The purpose is to remove useless things but give them a new purpose to serve as a home for new corals to form. Attracting marine wildlife and create new diving locations.
It's cheaper and way less damaging to the environment.
Assholerism
