  • There are a LOT of details and tips covered during the setup of this brand new PRS SE DGT. The guitar had a few small issues but overall, it turned out awesome and was a killer instrument to work on.
    Update: One astute viewer commented that the factory spec radius is 10". Thanks to ‪@macauley70‬ for pointing that out.

    I'll watch the whole 64 minutes later but I wanted to mention.
    I love my DGT SE but when it first arrived the High E wouldn't intonate without a bit of metalwork. The saddle was contacting the head of the trem screw but the intonation was still Flat.
    The sellers made me an 'adjusted' saddle with enough metal cut away from the face of the saddle to be able to ride over the trem screw head.
    I still had to fine file it to get it just right but with that fix, everything was and still is sorted 👍
    Encouraged, I later bought an SE Silver Sky, and do you know what ?
    Same thing with the High E intonation clearance, or rather lack of it ...
    This time though I just filed the saddle to clear the screw, a Fender style bent steel saddle this time, not a solid block.
    What were the chances of getting the same thing happening twice ?

      Seen this type of thing on many "fine" instruments. Happens more than manufacturers would like to admit.

      P.S.
      Despite that little bit of factory misalignment, I still think that they're both excellent guitars and good value for money.
      Even better vfm a year or so later with their newer reduced prices.

      LOL Just as I got to 12:00 I was popping a ball end out of a Strat bridge with an Allen Key ...
      Synchronicity or What ?

      @aperson7382 The quickest and easiest fix is to change the string and see if it resolves the problem. Other than that, other possible causes could be uneven frets in that area, the nut slot cut too low, or not enough relief.

    • @guitar-niche
      @guitar-niche  5 місяців тому

      @aperson7382 Thanks! Try the easy fixes first. If that doesn't work for you contact the seller explaining exactly what the issues are and see how they respond. Some sellers will even refund a portion equivalent to the service fee for having a tech make it right.

    On my SE McCarty 594 I changed the jack, the tolerance was off and a standard 1/4” jack wiggled. I bought a Switchcraft for $5 and it’s much tighter. I recommend a lite application of low to medium strength threadlocker so the jack nut stays on.

    My gold top DGT SE arrives this week! Great video - I'll use it to inspect and hoping I don't have to adjust a thing. I heard the frets are not stainless and prone to premature wear - is this true?

    • @guitar-niche
      @guitar-niche  Місяць тому

      Thanks for the comment! The frets are not stainless, they are typical medium size nickel alloy. If they were stainless it would be featured in the instrument specs on the PRS website. Otherwise, fret wear is a normal thing and very dependent on the player. With PRS, even the SE series, you pretty much have nothing to worry about.

    Its a partial coil tap on those DGT guitars....you can see the resistor going to ground when you removed the cavity cover.

    The real deal is how put correct on line all screws? The same high and the tremolo is on every one mark screws

    • @guitar-niche
      @guitar-niche  9 днів тому

      There is a slot milled into the shank near the top of every screw. This helps to keep the forward edge of the bridge plate centered. The back edge of the bridge plate can be used to set the plate level with respect to the body. From there it's a simple matter of adjusting overall height of the bridge plate using the outer screws, then levelling the remaining screws to match.

    Is that a Les Paul Custom in heritage cherry burst behind you? What year is it?

    • @guitar-niche
      @guitar-niche  4 місяці тому +1

      That is my personal '79 Les Paul custom purchased used in 1980. Not a mark on it - until I gigged the living snot out of it for a few decades.
      Thanks for asking :)

    I wonder why the strings don't want to come out on this bridge (I had the same issue) none of my other guitars are like this.

    • @guitar-niche
      @guitar-niche  7 місяців тому +1

      The string holes in the sustain block can be so finely machined to the point of being slightly undersize - even a couple thousandths makes a big difference. This is usually the main issue. Combine that with slightly oversized ball ends (depends on the brand) and you got more headaches.

      Just use the end of an old string and push the string and it through.

      Intonation is not hard I follow Dan Erlewines method. Guitar in playing position open and fretted 12 th fret to divide the string length in half and accounting for deflection, I like a strobe tuner. Been setting up my guitars for over a decade.

    Does this guitar have huge frets?

    • @guitar-niche

      Not huge, more like modern medium tall. Very popular size these days.

      @@jeffvargo1068 Wire size is relative to the timeframe. Compared to 80's and 90's that's medium.

      Jim dunlop wire 6100 is .110x .055 and when you crown the .055 with dunlop tollarance you come in around .050….6000 fret wire is the only size dunlop size larger…when a customer comes in for a refret using jumbo we use 6100 dunlop wire

      Well if you made an hour plus video full of helpful insights and put it up for free on the internet I’m sure you’d appreciate if people kept unhelpful negativity to themselves. Try going to the gym or see a therapist to release that.
