The wife was right. This is an absolutely beautiful piece of furniture. I have taken somewhat of the same idea/model from Wayfair about a year ago and am still working on it. I would love a CNC but don't have the room for it in my 1 car garage/workshop. Watching you build the top portion with the concealed dados, really helped me decide how the top portion needs/would work best to be put together. I love watching your channel and the inspiration you give someone like me that learned to work with power tools before hand tools. Looking forward to the next build!
You ARE a woodworker. You figure out your own designs, program you CNC, figure out the whole process of building your absolutely beautiful furniture. Using modern tools to get it done more efficiently and more accurately doesn't disqualify anyone as a woodworker. It only raises the upper limit of what they can do. I don’t necessarily think the use of Shaper and CNC is what bothers most UA-cam watchers. I’m sure it’s that the content makers have to mention it every time… at least a couple times per video. Good Day 🌅, nice job, I have some books somewhere that has a bookcase very similar, I can’t remember if it was Japan’s or China’s, Great design though, well worth the effort, From France,
That style has been ripped off for years, particularly from Japan/China, can even find them on amazon and usually labelled as Mingei (民藝) which is a Japanese term that translates to "folk craft" or "folk art.". Loved your take on it and dare I say too, your wife was right!
Yeah, I suspect the "Mingei" label is more about what you display on this rather than the style of furniture. Consensus seems to be that it's derived from Chinese style.
I am watching your segment on the This Old House Makers Channel. Great stuff. I live southeast of OKC and have visited Phoenix Hardwoods. Nice selection of hardwoods
Recently came across your channel and I must say, it all seems slightly familiar. You, of course are much more skillful, successful and entertaining than I, but I started out my wood working adventure with Shou Sugi Ban ( I simply called it burnt cedar effect because I didn't know it had a real name), moved on to fractal burning, epoxy, laser etching, glass etching and then and only then, I bought my first decent table saw. As I have been on this journey for the past few years I have also started dabbling into CNC. I do this solely as a hobby with a failing business price tag and have no regrets. Seeing your creations has given me more ideas and I am happy to learn from someone else who might not know when to be satisfied with their current knowledge. My one request, more skulls, lol.
I have been a public school woodshop teacher most of my adult life. YOU are a woodworker. A really good one. You just have a lot more skills than just woodworking.
Found it ( living room furniture, book cases section )- it's very similar in style, but it's clearly not the same piece- different wood, different finish, different shape legs, different number of drawers, different shelves.
The wife was right. I have to say beautiful. You dont always have to go back to a original idea but can recreate something to a higher level of quality. Second as a fellow creative but in sewing and other areas. Going the simple route is seamingly dull, not quality wanting to present and could be less of a quality piece in the creator's mind... but in the end the one who needs to like it knows what the one they love made them something with their time and energy that they will use is more precious and personal than just picking something from store as it has you in it... at least a tiny piece. For some of us making something special is a love language and sharing our talents... but contanstantly learning and griwing is just as important. Thank you for sharing your builds and inspiring many to keeping learning and growing
i cant be alone in this, but idk what it is about your videos, but i see the length and im like "oooooh this is gonna be an undertaking to watch", then i start it and Jonny starts talking about "making it this far" and i have no idea how the video literally just flew by! really enjoyed this build tho bub!
"Wife was Right" your build looks epic! it is inspiring me to try and get into my shop more and work to get better. I also agree with sometimes the buying the top end tool is the way to go off the bat. I personally have run through about $500 worth of cheap of the cheap palm sanders. I am still finding them randomly hanging out. then I got the standard dewalt (used) and ran that until it needed a magic spell to get it to start.finally I decided to try the Festool entry level sander ($250) the budget tool of their brand with no frills and oh how I love using it. I hated sanding then suddenly I was looking for things to sand for hours 😋
Wife was right. My white oak coffee table is a lot more time consuming than I thought! 2 1/2 week vacation not going to be enough time! Epoxy fills not drying, wood dried to MUCH smaller dimensions than expected, 110 air temp making it too hot to work and drying out wood more! 1st works problems! 🤓 What is the router table you are using?
The wife was right. Love this design and all the furniture you make for your family. I also like how you open up about different elements of yourself. Its very freeing to be honest about what you go through.
Wife was right - It would be super helpful in one of your vids to include the process of showing how you input your CAD drawing into the cnc process. I use Sketchup and want to make products with CNC machining and 3d printers. I could use all the tips and tricks from a reliable source such as yourself. Thanks for all the content!
wife was right - "less is more" with this piece - the original looked more early 80's than mid century (I can also imagine a black and red lacquer version being marketed as 'modern-Asian') your interpretation really 'elevates' the original inspiration piece (the monochrome curves/angular shelves contrasted by those doors? wow! ) good stuff
This build was super cool. I have had so many people tell me I'm crazy for painting red oak. It's my favorite wood to paint. Especially black. Good to know there are others out there that are crazy too. Lol.
The wife was right. I think you were right to stain it a uniform color. I am not a fan of black but I really couldn't tell you what color I think would have worked better so I guess you were right about the black as well. I truly enjoy the fact that you are honest about your inability to estimate time and number of steps. I am sure that is another sign of a wood worker other than doing work with wood.
Beyond it being unique, one of a kind {minus a slight design similarity} the black is killer! Absolutely sure I'd never be able to dedicate that much time to a project, but your efforts paid off. Thanks for sharing
First time viewer. I loved the commentary about the project as it was being built. I can't do a fraction of work of building anything, but I can appreciate the craftsmanship and talent. The final was awesome about the wife's reaction. I thought the finished product is very good. It's professional built, looks awesome and it stands as good or better than the original.
Soooo I was thinking about what wood my grandparents sheves were made of and I think you delivered me a possible answer :o Thank you! they look exactly like the black painted red oak! I love the more matte and darker parts against the more grey-ish parts of the grain :D
Love watching and listening to you. I totally agree with the ocd thing. If there’s a difficult way to do something, why not?! And if it takes 2,5 times longer, the longer the better. I sew and paint, not at the same time. When I find a flaw, I give it to a special friend.
'Your wife was right', that is beautiful...very pleasing to the eye (well mine anyway lol) and regardless of other comments you are definitely a wood worker
wife was right - but i think most people love to watch your videos because you're talking about the whole mess in your head everyone building has :) Love from Germany!!
Well "your wife was right" lol I'm a cabinet maker and to be honest we did a lot of high end work in Greenwich,CT and Westchester County. This piece is very unique and I love the black finish. It reminds me of a custom walk in closet we did on Central Park West a while ago. But the finish we did was liming where we finished in black used brass brushes to open the grain of the oak and rubbed liming wax in the open grain to contrast the black. Look into for a future project. Keep up the great work Jonny. And to be honest I wish I had some of the tools you use, would have made things way easier and repeatable.
Alright, For me personally I enjoy your videos and how you produce them. I enjoy your ramblings and think that your a talented and creative wood worker regardless of if you use hand tools or not! Agree with your perspective on it completely! There are alot of people that use the machine tools that you refer to and build complete garbage and you aren't doing that at all. The Koi Fish piece you built for your wife was beautiful and the table was bad ass as well! This piece to be honest is Beautiful as well. This new bookcase is beautiful as well and a testament to your precision and attention to detail with the machine tools that you use and there are likely few that could duplicate this regardless of what they use! So yes the "Wife was Right!"
"Wife Was Right," you needed more great tools! Fair trade for such and awesome project. I wish I had your level of talent! Black stained Red oak is my new favorite red oak.
“WIFE WAS RIGHT” I’m to the party, but not only do I always watch to entire video this was the best engagement content yet. I really enjoy all the videos and commentary.

Wife was right. I don’t have much of a comment beyond this was an incredible build. Also, I won’t be letting my wife watch your channel due to the fact that she’ll want me to build something like this. Keep up the great, inspiring work
I love, love, Love the doors! I'm so glad you kept the sapwood in the walnut. Wife was right, but you also did an amazing piece of work. Way better than the original (or knockoff...).
I suspect the original was from Oasis in the UK, they appear to have once sold a two part version (product 20500), but now they only show a 3 part version (product 6857). Looks to be a closer match to the original you showed. Either way the design looks to be oriental inspired, with the circle and the nested yin-yang dividing curve. You did a beautiful job re-creating it. (IronBridge Furniture also makes a similar looking shelf, but the divider is straight and the shelf layout is different, though they do make a smaller wall hanging one that has the nested yin-yang curves)
It's only a Paul McCobb piece if it comes from the Paul McCobb region of France
It was not build in metric so no Paul McCobb ;)
Otherwise it’s sparkling IKEA
😂😂😂 for all of the above!

Also. Have you tried to lay your wood on the CNC diagonally? Even a slight angle might avoid chip out.
using masking tape along the cut line on the back of the piece also significantly helps with chip out.
Use paint that's invisible unless you use black light then you can have your skulls in flames and everything else and it would look badass
🤘

Paul McCobb, here from the grave, and you're not wrong, that's not one of my pieces. However, your Wife was right.
Wife was right (like normal)
I have been a public school woodshop teacher most of my adult life. YOU are a woodworker. A really good one. You just have a lot more skills than just woodworking.
Ummm..... Just found the exactly the same piece on the Wayfair Canada website for $8500.00. It's Art Deco style. 😀
What is the router table you are using?
Wife was Right you are amazing Wood worker love this shelf beautiful job 👍👍😁😁😁❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Lol.
This! You are so clever and creative. A pleasure to watch! And as a wife myself I know, the wife was right.
"Wife was right"
I love watching your videos. Very relaxing for me.
Wife was right
Wife is always right
Happy wife = happy life.
Stunning build.. As always.
Fully appreciated
The wife was right and happy and at the end that was the goal, so, wife happy=Jonny happy. Saludos desde Puerto Vallara, México
One of my favourite builds youve done hands down
The wife was right! Amazing woodworking, I truly love this piece.
Not just a great job; but a lot of creativity with a plethora of tools! Congratulation and respect…😮
Wife was right is an understatement. Those shelves look amazing!
Your wife is right. Less is more. Very beautifull, great work. Doesnt matter where the inspiration came from, its an piece of art.
You said to say "wife was right" so I did but what I really loved in this video was the Millenium Falcon pusher on the table saw.
“Your wife was right”. You’re funny as heck. I love your stuff please keep making your “Capn Whacko” stuff beautiful piece man.
Changing the doors was the right move for sure! But yeah, The wife was right! This turned out AMAZING!
Your wife was right, and your interpretation of the design made it fabulous! 👏👏👏🤩
It does not matter what people say or thing, but, it is about the passion and the love for creating a master piece. Job well done.
"Wife Was Right," you needed more great tools! Fair trade for such and awesome project. I wish I had your level of talent! Black stained Red oak is my new favorite red oak.
Beautiful work! Keep rambling on 😂
Couldn’t find the designer but all the ones that came up like it were real yang yang or oriental style bookshelves and you’re wife was right!
Just started watching your videos love your witty sarcasm keep it up
“WIFE WAS RIGHT” I’m to the party, but not only do I always watch to entire video this was the best engagement content yet. I really enjoy all the videos and commentary.
By the way, your rendition of this design is a work of art! Far preferable to ANY version out there 🤩
Wife was right. Looks amazing - incredible work
Your wife was right, really liked the change to the more "simple" slab for the doors.
Love love love the cabinets 🤩😍
Wife was right, what an absolute amazing price for furniture dig the look of it for sure. Great job
Wife was right. It’s interesting to watch because it’s amazing what you do.
Wife was right.... but damn so were you. That turned out to be absolutely gorgeous. I thought it was a little boring but you really brought it together.
Wife was right. I don’t have much of a comment beyond this was an incredible build. Also, I won’t be letting my wife watch your channel due to the fact that she’ll want me to build something like this.
Keep up the great, inspiring work
Your wife was right. Love you’re videos keep up the good work
Wife was right!
Love your content…keep doing what you do and expressing yourself.
I love, love, Love the doors! I'm so glad you kept the sapwood in the walnut. Wife was right, but you also did an amazing piece of work. Way better than the original (or knockoff...).
Wife was right! Looks great man, keep it up!
Wife was right, the piece is beautiful. Great job, dude. Your daughter is adorable
