Venus was head case at Grand Slams in the 1990s when playing Hingis and Davenport. In the 2000s that all change when she saw Serena won a grand slam before her woke her up and she decided to step her game up. The 1999 US Open Semi final loss to Hingis was pivotal. Hingis only defeated Venus two times out of eight matches after that match in 1999 before she retired in 2003. Ironically towards the end of Venus career she went back being a head case. 🤣
Venus absolutely on fire that first set, but it's really noticeable how much her level dropped after that. I dunno if she lost her concentration or if it was perhaps a very early sign of the health conditions she'd have in later years. Either way, this match was a great stepping stone to her real breakthrough year 2000
Did you only watch the first set?? Venus was definitely on fire in that first set, but her level very clearly dropped in the second set. As Gerry Williams who was commentating said when Venus dropped that second set "her mind is no longer clear and she's forgotten what she was meant to be doing". That is not ruthless. If you think this match was the most ruthless you've ever seen then you clearly don't watch much tennis.
So many return winners and aces, something we did not see in the US semifinals, that made a huge difference

Along with the super fast indoor court, this match is the most ruthless match I have ever seen from Venus, or from any other player past or present.
Totally agree. Looked scary

Queen vee
Venus is not hitting winners, she is belting the ball. I feel bad for the balls.
Wonder why they abolished this tournament
