But more and more time passed and we just never did. The recorders just never came and broke my 9 year old heart.

Much as I appreciate the other comment, I'll be the boring factual guy here and say that most woodwind instruments cover more or less the same holes. Fingerings can be different because most people's hands aren't large enough to reach everything they need to on a saxophone, or precise enough for those of a piccolo.
