@@RedshirtAfficionadoI’ve gotta disagree. From playing zomboid for a very very long time, basic shambler zombies are almost impossible to get bit or scratched by unless you yourself do something risky or incorrect. If you play even decently well, you will never get scratched or bit, and almost every single time I’ve gotten a wound from a zombie it’s been from lag or desync in multiplayer, a buggy zombie or some other issue. So yeah, I’d definitely say 9/10 times that you receive a bite isn’t your fault, because it’s only ever about 1/10 times that you get wounded by a zombie that it’s actually something you messed up. (like trying to fight too many, getting too many negative moodles and succumbing, not being careful and watching your back, or getting jump scared by a zombie in a closet or bathroom.) Heck my last zombie wound, a laceration was from a zombie inside a closet with boards on it, I went to remove the barricades and turns out they didn’t exist physically,!and my character just opened the door, and I immediately got lacerated because I expected them to start removing boards. Almost every injury I get in the course of actual Zomboid play comes from crashing cars or windows over zombies.
@@RedshirtAfficionado Nah, I gotta agree with what the previous person said, at least in my experience, 95% of my injuries are from jank, bugs, or things which otherwise should not have happened. I've got enough experience in the game where if it's possible to not get bitten, I don't.

It's horrible on reddit in particular, you could show the most blatant bug ever and you'd still have an army of idiots going "well ackshually, if you hadn't done this and that you wouldn't have been in a situation where it can occur, so it's on you" like shut the hell up man. Drives me crazy.

A bug being fairly easy to reproduce doesn't mean it will get fixed. Sadly I learned that the hard way, with VOIP being broken in the last updates for B41. They changed something about getting the distant player locations, and made it so you don't know where the players that you can't see are. AS in, you don't even know they exist until you see them. And you forget after a while if you separate. This doesn't affect players with any kind of admin rights, only regular ones. They first claimed we're just imagining things, then that this is caused by out-of-date mods, finally they said the window for updating B41 is closed so they won't do anything.
TIS has always been that way. Step one deny, step two blame, and step three ignore problem. Unless they think of the idea or find it themselves they are too good for being shown issues to solve them. They rather a modder fix the problem so they can toss it into a build. Friend of mine fixed the long standing B41 MP issue of vehicles not losing tires with loss pressure, items falling out of a trunk with low condition, and gas leaking out of low condition gas tanks for online gameplay. It was simply a series of yes and no commands in the code they switched off then never turned back on for MP. My friend sent TIS the solution of fixed code for this problem and explained the steps in detail after digging in the code to find it. After years of them saying there is nothing they can do about it. Then they told him they didnt need or want his solution... Pretty much told him to F off. Problem remains unfixed this whole time... Still waiting to see if B42 MP will have this fixed or not. Also the devs once told me that it was impossible to add vehicle trailers due to the code. A modder did it within months. I dont believe anything the devs say anymore. Purely from the amount of times they are proven wrong and how rude they treat the community. @@RedshirtAfficionado Because fighting two zombies in melee should be "outside of limits" kekw. @@RedshirtAfficionado I get what you're saying, but I think it's happened to me almost everytime I've attempted to fight more than 1 zombie at a time.
I like difficulty, not bullshit. I lost 3 runs in a row on a new version bcs of this and was thinking its some kind of combat rework. Hope they fix this issue, thanks for the vid
Hard to stay positive about PZ when this is the kind of stuff that pops out after three years of active development time. I get that a lot of systems got molested in the process of making this update, but maaaaan. Hope there's a quick fix, but given how some other users are talking about previously reported bugs, I'm not sure if I should have high hopes.
The worst part is, even if the bugs with combat are fixed, it’s still boring as hell. They didn’t just leave B41 combat unfinished, they left it half-baked, with none of the staple mechanics from other games that make melee combat challenging and fun. The zombies are entirely too predictable and controllable, which makes the combat a grind rather than a risk, and the devs patch over it by making the combat a slower grind. "If you want a picture of the future, imagine a man walking backwards and swinging an axe. Forever."
The motto of project zomboid ever since I played it has always been "It's the best survival game after you download your 100+ mod list where the community will fix all the problems in the base game for you." There was a video by zedsurvivor that was a huge criticism that everyone who disagreed with the video ignored where he said "literally half of the crafting skills are useless." My criticism of that is when you dig into the skills, about 3/4's of them in actuality are useless/hollow content. Stealth/light footed barely exist even in 42, running takes too long to grind even with it tagged, cooking is only useful for minmaxing, electrical/metalworking/farming/first aid/mechanics are borderline useless unless you are in a hyper niche specific scenario, and literally all of the combat skills are just linear progression where the number gets bigger. That's 3/4's of the skills in the game serving basically no purpose. What's even stupider is a lot of the features in build 42 are blatantly inspired(or ripoffs if you're more cynical) of mods but these mods don't add all the over complexities that is in vanilla 42. In 41 scrap weapons mod for example, the goal to make scrap weapons was aquire the book aquire the file, aquire propane if it's a metal weapon, and aquire whatever 2 scrap sheets/leather was needed. In build 42 it's aquire the book, aquire the file, aquire the propane, aquire the pliers, aquire the duck tape, aquire the leather, aquire the mold, aquire the twine, aquire the large metal sheets, aquire the small metal sheets, and aquire the tool handle...just to make a item that would likely be the same/weaker then something you could loot from a warehouse anyway.
@@AImpatientMan even with mods, it's far from a good zombie game, let alone the best. If you like overly complex stuff, play Cataclysm, if you're more of a casual, play any other zombie game. The only thing PZ has going on for it is multiplayer, which is going to probably going to be taken over by a dedicated company that actually knows how to develop a game.
42 is at this point not even half baked, it's more like dough. A lot of ideas an mechanic thrown together with little consideration how it would play out.
That's what I've been constantly saying for the last month. But people on Reddit prefer to worship it and immediately downvote you for critiquing it. 🤷♀
Well, everybody at least wanted to play Build 42 and experience themselves the things added to the game. We are the ones that earned this bugs by not waiting longer. At least bug fixing and polishing will be faster with player reports.
@@deadsoldiertr my current Build 42 experience time doesn't even exceed one hour. I'd rather play Build 41 with my tiny collection of 500 mods than eat a microwaved steak. I honestly give up on Project RealismMeansSlogBoid. After playing for some time and surviving for a month the whole thing feels like slog even with adjusted apoc settings and mods. You know the game is boring and unenjoyable when playing Fallout 4 feels fun again. Not one point in my PZ game sessions did I feel enjoyment, all I felt was annoyed when every goal I tried to do was either too grindy, had too many zombies to make it worth it, or just broken that I'm better off not doing. Everything felt like a needless overkill. Thanks Lemmy for making me realise that even Bugthesda knows how to make a fun game despite it being filled with countless bugs and awful story writing. Not even mods can save PZ from being a slog to me.
the needless over-complicated crafting menu makes my eyes glaze over in disinterest. does anyone see a 'steel rod quarter' and get excited, or some rotten burgers in a dumpster, or a worn tire iron with 11% durability??
I noticed in B42 that crawler targeting was much better, but sometimes when I attack standing zombies it just goes straight through. Thanks for the breakdown! This explains a lot.
I thought crawler targeting blew chunks, especially trying to shoot them really blows, I just wait until they get up again, my guy either keeps missing or doing some crouch thing unless I'm in a very specific spot or aiming at a very specific place.
"Nothing is a bug, everything is intended difficulty curve." It's gotta be bait at this point, I've got 1000+ hours in game and can stagedive Raven Creek/Louisvile with high spawns, but the second I mention that something doesn't feel right or comes across as a bit jank, someone that just bought the game is dropping in the thread to chime in with the usual "ur bad" response. It's getting to be really annoying because you'll bring up something like vehicles bouncing off a horde regardless of weight/speed and suggest something to keep the concept (zombies in groups are realistically hard to drive through in a sedan) while making it not feel weird/unsatisfying to play around (making weight a factor in speed loss for cars impacting zombies), only to get a "ur trash" from someone that clearly didn't even understand what you were on about.
I have nearly 6000 hours and I get told the same get gud kid statements. I look at them and think wow ok guy you just have no idea what to even look at, yet commented anyway. What is with these people. Given the amount of bot posters in this modern day in age. Im starting to wonder if they are just bots. Because if they played the game the problem would be obvious if they just look. But then again this crowd has always been in PZ in the forums and even some streamers. Who defend everything regardless of merit or clearly the devs nerfing the player just to help zombies in some artificially forced way. They will defend nerfs claiming realism. But will be against realism if it help the player. Like what... The worst nerf in B42 has to be all former gun loot locations. LV police station and prison stand out the most. They took the gun loot and replaced it with warehouse trash that makes no sense. Zero reason to do this change other than to make gameplay worse with less reward.

I think it's some sort of e-peen flex, like "oh you don't like the changes that made the game less fun and more insufferable? guess you're not as hard as I am." and it's really annoying because the discussion stops being about how fun the game is and starts being about ego.
I legit for the first time in my Zomboid career got so pissed off about the inconsistent attack motion missing during a REALLY good run that caused me to suffer a bite, that I logged out and reloaded the game with debug mode on just to remove the bite. I'm not losing everything due to the game's stupidity, only my own. Also, they need to give us the option to drop a corpse quickly instead of having to always finish out the animation.
@@MozzDef Yes, you can just hit the sprint key to instantly let go. You can also just remove the filter out of a respirator and put it right back it, it regains the entire filter durability lol.
@ I'll give that a try, I know once you're in the animation of dropping you can't do anything but I'll just try sprinting while dragging it to see. Almost died on a run because I was stuck in the animation lol.
I got nothing against that for technical issues, just as long as you learn from it and know it happens. :) Also press shift while standing from a rest on ground, you'll stand up a lot faster. I also found out that when fishing you can just walk away to reel in the line instantly if not getting bites.
I hope they don't fix it but do just declare it WAI. Getting in close in melee in pvp is a valid combat simulator tactic that must not be lost just due to solo players QQing over getting in too deep while playing body count score climber.
had a really solid run going and ended up dying to what felt like an insanely avoidable mistake, which i now realize was actually this exact issue, swung, targeted a farther zombie, got bit, died. i love to see the community putting info out there to warn others on the quirks of the new build, since this is genuinely very dangerous and, clearly, gets you killed enough to be a real issue. awesome video, thank you for the in depth explanation
There's also another bug when your survivor stops responding to controls for half a second, turning into a succulent, motionless piece of meat for the zombies you fight, I don't know what triggers it but it has happened to me twice in my long games.
I do remember that happening with the zombie-grapples that just barely miss in B41- luckily I haven't had it happen to me yet in B42. Although in 42, I have my character completely freeze up for sometimes upwards of an ingame hour after exercising. Sums up my experiences with bugs in 42, they're annoying but aren't gamebreaking.

god I hate zomboid's weird elitist community, discourse about anything resembling difficulty in zomboid was frustrating to begin with, so it makes me happy that this led to people gaslighting each other into thinking a bug was a skill issue on their part.
@@geronimo5537 well, it is a problem, but theres also a lot of people blaming this problem for their own mistakes. I sound like a brocken record, but I'll say again: Project Zomboid is not going to thrive in the near future. This stupid defending of bad development decisions and ridiculously long update times will kill off any new hype this game has. No one wants to play a janky isometric zombie game that thinks realism is punishing the player for every attempt to have fun. Who's going to fund your studio if you deter new players fanboys? Guys come on, they're an indie company! They aren't supposed to make their game work after 3 years! You're entitled to expect a playable build after years of waiting!
It does truly sadden me people are experiencing some fairly large bugs, B42 looks amazing. The new lighting looks stellar, the map changes are utterly amazing. The world building is fantastic, be it the ingame readable items, or mementos (Like some of the comical pictures/business cards you can find). The new loot tables feel nice, the new variants of items we had before is a great touch as well. Despite peoples gripes, I do like the new crafting system and muscle-fatigue. (Although it's a bit overtuned) I've just been lucky to have a surprisingly bug-free experience, and unless something majorly gamebreaking happens, I don't think I'll be looking back on B41 anytime soon. I just wish TIS cleans up some stuff in a fairly quick fashion so people can enjoy 42. Oh and if TIS removes the random Super-Hearing and Super-Toughness randomness, that's just awful.
@@cortmann8196 I won't disagree that theres new additions to the game worth checking out. but B42 soured me on how much that changed what wasn't broken in the first place, and how people outside the devs have defended it. my main control scheme is controller, so I have to wait until i get news about B42 controller refixing for things like guns in combat and other details before i can play it. people can cheer the new crafts, but i wanted expansions to the old ones and hearing the devs moving away from the context menu's doesn't fill me with confidence for usability, all for a later build that implies the NPCs will be taking up these crafts to trade them for things with. personally I feel like all i count on an NPC to do as of yet is leap into a zombies mouth. bugs from even prior patches are here with a vengence along with new ones from all the redesigning to the point some people can't tell whats a bug vs intended, and a constant refrain from some players is "just sandbox that bro", like the zombie situation you just brought up. It truly is unstable as the namesake, but on top of all this my step into it also gave me performance issues on top of controller and im not thrilled by the majority of the crafting changes either. i love the basements. I like new POI's, I can even love worldbuilding, albeit the new loot tables can easily annoy. but right now It's honestly an annoyance point that I wish people hadn't pushed them to give a date on. I wasn't screaming for a new build like other players, so this really makes me wish they had just left it to cook more.
Build 42. We waited, how long for this? Car animations? No, just add a car door alarm. Crowbars can pry open doors? Nah, not realistic enough. Crossbows/Bows? Nah, too realistic.
I was so confused why i kept randomly dying while fighting hordes i should've never had trouble fighting. Thanks for finally explaining to the playerbase Ps: im cool :>
So glad this issue is investigated. I definitely felt some suspicious combat moments while fighting more than one zomboid and wasn’t ever sure if I was doing something incorrectly
Especially when they're down in the ground if you are really weak which is what's usually going to happen in the beginning you start fighting a bunch of zombies you don't do enough damage to knock them out but you do enough to make them start crawling on the ground. They end up being untargetable and then just scratch your legs out until you can't do anything not to mention with the stupid muscle fatigue. You may as well just sit inside of a house with all the windows closed and never leave the house because this is what they want you to play now
You were exactly the person i wanted to make a video about the B42 aiming. Thanks. Someone should bring this to the devs for them to look at what is going on.
In regards to the multi-hit targeting issue: This looks very similar to gun targeting in old versions of Build 41, where firearms would infamously sort from "back to front" when trying to aim at zombies. My guess is that since guns were just extremely long sticks, the engine attemped to target the furthest zombie for damage reasons, and that goof has some how found its way into melee weapons. It's a guess though.
that actually might be possible. Id argue part of why shotguns felt so good in B41 was the lower optimum range combined with the multi-hit hid the problem. also helped jamming was hardly to not even an issue with shotguns. I wonder how the range cones worked out in debug.
I did had a feeling something was off while fighting more than one zombie. Glad to know exactly what, gonna pay attention and be more careful until is not fixed.
@@TheIziPizi Thefact that it takes a long time (which is a valid point, PZ development is really slow) has nothing to do with this. I absolutely understand the frustration, but everyone experiencing problems with the currently available B42 version has specifically chosen to opt-in to an unstable test build.
I really just don’t understand why the devs are so lax to actually fix issues. I’ve seen small Indie developers (even solo devs) come out with hotfixes mere hours or days of the launch of their update. Yet, for some reason, TIS is absurdly slow on the issue. I’m genuinely curious to understand how their dev team works because it just doesn’t make sense to me…
That window thing explains so much, a few days ago I randomly swong my weapon while in my base and broke a window on the other side, I was super confused on how that even happened
i noticed the problem gets amplified in 1 tile spaces like the rooftop of skyscrapers. my push sometimes go through a single zombie and get bit anyways just with a 1v1 no horde
im having this issue a LOT, already lost 3 characters because of this, but since i wont accept dying to bugs i just backup my character and keep the gameplay, i hope they fix it soon
I have this issue very often. Not only to many attacks simply miss, but many zombies that are on the ground become untargetable briefly. This can occur when they climb over obstacles, or when the player knocks them down. In build 41, quickly dispatching a downed zombie was a breeze. Now, every single zombie needs a half second to get stomped. This may not seem like much until one is trying to clear an area with more than 2 zombies. It quickly devolves into back-up and train tactics. Firearms don't help. With the overhaul, my level 10 aiming character will miss about 25% of the shots unless they are point-blank range. The combat in build 42 sucks. It's broken and needs to be addressed IMMEDIATELY...
As a Zomboid long time player the amount of players that gatekeep bugs and say git gud instead of acknowledging the problem is super annoying. Definitely the worst part of the community in my opinion.
I think this was what was also making the muscle fatigue system even worse than it was, because you need those hits to count and if you need to swing twice to hit a zombie you become more fatigued. Shoving for a "free" kill is risky due to the same targeting bug, and also causes fatigue. So realistically you end up fighting every zombie like its a sprinter by way of fence fighting, not to mention the eagle eyed/ pinpoint hearing zombies. Also, I wonder if the thing with hitting a car from a distance is causing the feeling of weapons suddenly breaking from half condition, like if your fighting near a car and its taking condition damage from both the zombie and car.
I've definitely noticed this a decent amount. I also get an aiming bug where if I'm shooting at a group of zombies and one of them falls without dying, my character's model gets all scrunched up into a little ball while trying to aim at them and I can't shoot. Lol. It's a bug with aiming a rifle at crawling zombies.
Pretty sure this is what got my 3 month long survivor killed by 2 zeds. Swung at the front one, hit the back one, got bit. Had everything I needed, and I had to grind out Electrical in order to operate my generators. RIPerino.
i wish more update to the unstable version, looks like they just released cuz of peoples pressure, like lets just release, people will forget, that might be true since they promissed the beta before dec 25, but well... last time i've played i've got bitten by a zombie 6 foot from me...

Heck my last zombie wound, a laceration was from a zombie inside a closet with boards on it, I went to remove the barricades and turns out they didn’t exist physically,!and my character just opened the door, and I immediately got lacerated because I expected them to start removing boards.

You want hardcore? Go set your settings and create your world, don't tell everyone how this game should be played, this is a sandbox
And when it comes to bugs when you do something that's risky/uNrEalIsTic for other players, they'll be like: "AhUm well Uhh YoU DeServed that Lesson LearNed etc etc"
sheesh.
(yes they censor and constantly ban people for critiques. or even just pointing out bugs they dont want to hear about)

Build 42- The Just Don't Fight the Zomboids Update
@@THE_REAL_CAPT3N thankfully this bug isn’t a big deal if you take fights within your limits. It’s only really noticeable if you’re trying to backpedal fight a big group.
@@RedshirtAfficionado Because fighting two zombies in melee should be "outside of limits" kekw. I have 100% noticed this same issue and it does not require a large group, its probably much more dangerous with large hordes.
They will patch it soon , its early access for a reason...
@@luc1d356 one of these bugs in the video was in the game since IWBUMS B41. B42 just made it worse.

I thought crawler targeting blew chunks, especially trying to shoot them really blows, I just wait until they get up again, my guy either keeps missing or doing some crouch thing unless I'm in a very specific spot or aiming at a very specific place.

It's gotta be bait at this point, I've got 1000+ hours in game and can stagedive Raven Creek/Louisvile with high spawns, but the second I mention that something doesn't feel right or comes across as a bit jank, someone that just bought the game is dropping in the thread to chime in with the usual "ur bad" response.

(Although it's a bit overtuned)
I've just been lucky to have a surprisingly bug-free experience, and unless something majorly gamebreaking happens, I don't think I'll be looking back on B41 anytime soon.
I was so confused why i kept randomly dying while fighting hordes i should've never had trouble fighting. Thanks for finally explaining to the playerbase
Ps: im cool :>
I stopped playing largely for this reason. Shoddy controls in roguelikes are an absolute deal-breaker.
There is also the bug where you can place objects at far distances as well. Related to the distant object from player xp gain segment.
You may as well just sit inside of a house with all the windows closed and never leave the house because this is what they want you to play now
My favorite is when I am towards the upper right side of the screen and my character just morphs into himself, rendering me unable to attack lol
You were exactly the person i wanted to make a video about the B42 aiming. Thanks.
Someone should bring this to the devs for them to look at what is going on.
glad to know combat is being a *little* funky and I'm not just spontaneously worse at the game lol

You're cool too, thanks for explaining this bug. It's really interesting see the variables considered in melee combat 👍🏼
I was about to fall asleep sleep... Oh well
That window thing explains so much, a few days ago I randomly swong my weapon while in my base and broke a window on the other side, I was super confused on how that even happened
i noticed the problem gets amplified in 1 tile spaces like the rooftop of skyscrapers. my push sometimes go through a single zombie and get bit anyways just with a 1v1 no horde
I’m happy these issues are being addressed so they can be ironed out for the stable release of build 42.
Earned subscription. This has frustratingly killed a few characters and now I know why, no more brawling with hoardes until fixed.
After all these years this game is still not finished and full of bugs. I have lost interest and my patience at this point.
im having this issue a LOT, already lost 3 characters because of this, but since i wont accept dying to bugs i just backup my character and keep the gameplay, i hope they fix it soon
It's broken and needs to be addressed IMMEDIATELY...
glazers will just deny all the debug mode proof
As a Zomboid long time player the amount of players that gatekeep bugs and say git gud instead of acknowledging the problem is super annoying.
Definitely the worst part of the community in my opinion.
Combat is a huge part of pz for me, ended up dropping the build until it gets fixed
really hope it gets fixed soon, glad to know it wasn't just in my head😔
unrelated but I always thought your pfp was a closeup image of Usopp from One Piece until I took a closer look
Damaging windows from a distance: PZ Fus Ro Dah confirmed.
Outstanding. Also great video as always.
I have 800 hours and can definitely tell it was bugged. Nobody could make me doubt it.
Babe wake up new Retanaru video dropped
i have lost 2 Epic playthroughs , literally sad that i get bitten 1 v 1 with a zombie.
Pretty sure this is what got my 3 month long survivor killed by 2 zeds. Swung at the front one, hit the back one, got bit.
Had everything I needed, and I had to grind out Electrical in order to operate my generators. RIPerino.
This is a good game. We should absolutely be using the unstable to help out finding this weird gimmicks.
i wish more update to the unstable version, looks like they just released cuz of peoples pressure, like lets just release, people will forget, that might be true since they promissed the beta before dec 25, but well... last time i've played i've got bitten by a zombie 6 foot from me...
what if instead of adding new stuff they fixed the game
So we waited three years to get a worse game lmao.
Another awesome breakdown,
trying to take a break from OSRS and oyu keep playing these tunes making me go back 💀
A bug from Build 41. It happens rarely, but there are times where a weapon phases through zombies.
Holy shit, ive lost several characters to the push bug, I am glad to know I am not going crazy and that the push really is bugged. I had it happen 1 or 2 times in b41, but this is downright atrocious in b42.
Indiestone needs to be paying Ret a retainer for QA testing.
That did rarely happen in B41, but it was still most of the time I got bitten or scratched so I switched back to multi-hit and that fixed it.
thank you for the video because i absolutely fucked up my sleeping schedule last night
I'm cool!!! But so are you Ret!!! Thank you for the incredible research and concise videos as always!!!!
