    I love this tree. The story doesn't have to make it better.; it does though. its such a cool trunk and i absolutely agree, i would collect it today if i thought it had a good chance to survive

      Thank you Taco, It’s great to have history and memories in a tree. Sometimes you get stuck with a tricky sycamore like this that most think could never make a good bonsai 🤣 I actually love this tree it’s a personally challenge 🌱

    That is a great tree with a back history to match. I love what you are doing with it. On the vermiculite front - I swapped from perlite about 3 years ago and have never regretted it. Great vid Sam

      Thanks Xav, Hopefully we’ll make something decent of it again! Interesting 🤔 I’ve seen mixed opinions on vermiculite what grade/size do you use? I got a 100ltr bag for free as was mistakenly sent as perlite! I’ve been adding a little to most pot ups.

    Great video repotting your Sycamore, I gave mine a much needed repot in 2022, there was still a lot of clay in it from many years ago but it is now much better soil and it has done well. This tree appears on my youtube channel in many of my videos, please feel free to have a look. Happy Gardening.

      That’s nice to hear of a fellow Bonsai enthusiast taking on the challenge of a sycamore bonsai. Sounds like you on the right path. There a very tough species in spring you could remove all that old clay if the trees really health thrashing it in a bucket of water will do the job and no harm! I root grafted some New roots on my one this year, All but one appear to have take well! Looking forward to next spring! Il be sure to check your tree out 🌱

    Nice potting mix. Repotting Looking good. Try a diamond drill bit for the clay pot to drill into. That should be a nice easy drill.

      Cheers Tom! Recently rediscovered my diamond tip bits clearing thru some junk. iv collected a few nice pots/dish’s to attempt to drill out since this video 😆

      @@nillysbonsai9636 I find that if you drill from the bottom of the pot, I put in styrofoam into the whole pot. This prevents the bit and drill from crashing through and a possible breakage of the pot. Bit hits the styrofoam and does no damage then. Just a thought to help you out.

    your new soil mix was interesting but for me you missed out a vital ingredient some Sphagnum Moss..and maybe some bone meal as a feeder .

      Thanks for watching and commenting, This is an inexpensive mix im trying out if the tree was going in a smaller pot I’d be swapping a few ingredients about. As for feed, il feed the tree when it shows signs of recovery others wise isn’t beneficial when you’ve been tampering like this. Spag moss I use under big roots cuts and AirLayering. Interested to know do you add to the mix and for what species?

      @@nillysbonsai9636 my mix is compost 20%/john Innis #2 -- 20% /sharp sand/perlite /pea gravel/ pine bark/ spag moss /bone meal i usually mix up around a 50ltr barrow at a time and use as needed for all bonsai repots .

      Nice, Well minus the Bark, spag moss and bone meal (at time of potting) that is the mix I used to use! Great results in Spring summer with collected trees and material but I feel it can sit a little wet and cold in smaller pots over winter had some damage this year. This is only a training mix im using inexpensive stuff For a warmer and even Better Drained hopefully

    Sycamore as in Platanus racemosa , etc.....or Acer?

    • @nillysbonsai9636
      @nillysbonsai9636  Рік тому

      Acer pseudoplatanus is it proper name I believe we call them sycamore maples (UK) . In the US I think they call a Platanus occidentalis Plane tree a sycamore.
