    100% love honeynut squash!
My never list this year goes to:
Kohlrabi - sure, it's fairly easy to grow, but aside from dipping it in something with flavor, we just don't use it for anything.
Considering not growing big beefy tomatoes too... It just takes so long for those to put any out!
Okinawan sweet potato... Almost. I love the color, flavor and texture, but man it is so inconsistent for production. I'm gonna plant a few next year, but that's it. If they don't produce, then I'm done with em. I planted something like 25 slips, and I'd be lucky if we got a pound per plant average. Some had decent roots, some had zero. There are so many other varieties that produce well, and have good flavor. That's what we want!
On our love list - Sungold cherry tomatoes. Man, these things gave us loads of sweet goodness, and have produced even after a touch of frost this fall.
Potatoes -fresh potatoes are so delicious, and pretty easy to grow here with our cool wet spring and warm dry summer.
Kabocha squash - fairly short vine to produce a good family sized squash that tastes delicious.
Garlic - I love how "set it and forget it" it is, and we get great yields up here.

Cabbage. It takes up a lot of space and all of the pests love it. You only get one cabbage per plant. I would rather plant something that gives me more food with less work and frustration.

I got a decent harvest of butternut squash this year from just one plant. I don`t go to stores so I try to grow calories but it`s hard in Louisiana with all the pests. Baby bunnies got into my watermelon patch and nibbled the vines up and I had all kinds of problems. Next year I`m growing my peas and beans in a better place. I bought crowder pea seeds and they gave me the kind that makes vines so that messed everything up. Next year the melons will be out in the middle of the yard by themselves.

I was wondering when you were going to stop growing onions. lol I stopped growing what wasn’t working for me a few years ago. I don’t have a lot of space so I grow what a know we will eat. Husband makes special requests and then won’t even try one! He keeps having flashbacks from a jalapeño slither 2023. 😂Finally, I’m not making spaghetti sauce next year so, I’m only going to grow 1-2 Cherokee purple because they don’t get super tall and a cherry tomorrow…may try a sun gold this time.

Here in Fl the heat kills them before big ones can produce. And I don’t start seeds in doors I just sew seeds where I want the plants.. so I know people say start them before the temps get warm inside but that ain’t me! I like easy not extra work! Hello! I’m doubling down on MELONS. I grew Minnesota Midgets this year & my favorite days were the ones when I got to eat a warm, ripe melon!! Filled me up. 1 melon per serving, I think I got 6 melons per plant. I also plant 12 basils in a 8 gallon grow bag to make pesto for noodles (swoon!). I will NOT grow chard or spinach again - oxalates!! Chinese cabbage was filthy with earwigs, but will try again in pots. YES, green beans are a must-have, and so is romaine lettuce and peppers. Always, always grow those.

SW Colorado can be a challenging place to garden. At the edge of mountains and desert. I love to garden, but over the years I have given up on many things, because they are not worth the space, effort, and water used. If friends, neighbors have more success with certain things, I'll buy from them (or often they just give me stuff!). I liked your honesty about what does and does not work for you.

Lmbo @Thyme playing sleep. You ain’t never lied. I have 3 varieties planted together and it’s a beast. I use it in my smoker for my honeybees. I’m not planting tomatoes this year simply because I went away for 2 weeks, told friends to pick whatever was ripe in my garden in my absence. I came home to decomposing tomatoes all in my garden; seeds every place. No one picked a single thing. They are already coming up so I know I’m going to have them coming out of my ears in the summer. I absolutely will not plant Motherland Okra again. I tried every technique imaginable to get it germinated. After purchasing the 5th pack in one year with no results I was completely over it.

I planted Red Ripper Purple Hull Peas around my young fig trees this year to add nitrogen to the soil, keep the wild bunnies away from my main garden, provide ground cover and I got a great harvest. I let them dry in the pods inside out of the rain. They get stung by beetles in summer which ruins the developing peas so in summer I cook the green pods whole but by September the beetles go away and I pick the pods when they turn purple and dry them inside. It`s too humid outside and they will rot. It`s November and there are baby ground cherry plants coming up 30 feet from where the plant was. I put one in a pot to grow under a 24 watt Sansi grow bulb on a timer indoors this winter.

I’m a houseplants fiend and I don’t normally grow veggies as I’ve just got a NYC balcony. I had a old potato which I planted. They were so good when I dug them up out of that pot and cooked them. I do grow purslane. It’s normally a weed but it’s edible. It volunteers in my houseplants and it’s got a slight lemony sourness and satisfying crunch and once you get it you can’t get rid of it so might as well use it.

I plant a cherry tomato, then a cutting from it, and another and another until I have enough for a bowl of them every day until November. If we get an early frost I cover them with a sheet or a garbage bag. A very lightweight 8x10 tarp works too. The small thin tarps are great to have in spring to cover fruit trees and blackberries too if a late freeze happens.

Ground cherries don’t easily reseed here, at least that’s been my experience. I’ll always grow them. “What’s worse than yellow patty pan squash? WHITE yellow patty pan squash!” 😂😂

@Brokefarmer I was really wanting to know what was the name of that pear tree you mentioned in a Livestream with another gardener. You said you were opposed to the way it grows, or it invades and takes over too much space, or something. I have had 2 pear trees in containers for a couple of months, wondering if they are one of those that you spoke of🤔🤷🏽

As far as the onions for pest control. It isn't really meant to kill the pests, I think it's more to try and mask the smell of the plants the pest is looking for.

Hey Broke thanks for the great information. I will never grow green peppers again. The plant is now about 6-8 inches tall and its 45 degrees outside. I started it in June. Can I continue to grow it inside. Also should i cover my turnip greens with plastic bags when the temp goes under 32 degrees?

    • @BrokeFarmer
      @BrokeFarmer  13 днів тому +1

You can bring the peppers inside they are biannual, turnip greens taste better after frost

Patty pan squash and onions extended my. Mother’s life after the doctors told us to take her home. So she could be comfortable and at peace in her final days. I was like 13 alls she ate was P.S and she lived. Almost 2 years and she was very active out going. She died in a car accident I’ve never tried it. But I keep trying to grow it so thanks for telling me. What it taste like

Yeh with the onions it's more about mild confusion with smell than actual pest repellent. Now if I wanted to truly repel something with smell, like say, voles, just plant daffodils around whatever needs repellent. Vermin hate daffodils. One time I accidentally walled off a vole INSIDE my flower garden by planting daffodils in a ring around it. Flowers got rekt, but it didn't dig through the daffodil border.
