    What a player he's been

  • @AnotherLuke

    Not obstruction. Defender was tricked into committing to the wrong attacker, not blocked from following BOD (that he realises at the last second that the ball has gone elsewhere makes no difference, he committed to the player he though was getting the ball). No different from a screen pass.Forward pass is borderline. BOD is running slightly sideways (see the halfway line) and the ball is allowed to drift forward in a pass to allow for the forward momentum of players. Would have been very harsh to penalise.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but when O'Driscoll passed the ball to himself, was he and the ball behind the line when he started the pass, then he and the ball were in front of the line when he caught it a half-second later, which would make this really a forward pass?

  • @wowjiffeylube
    @wowjiffeylube 11 років тому

    A forward pass only occurs if it touches another player. If it touches the ground it's a knock on. Until either of those occurs, the player who last touched the ball is considered to still be in possession. In this case, though obviously intentional, it's refereed as though BOD had caught the ball poorly & had to juggle. Interestingly, Hickie had the option of playing the ball as it was in flight (probably intended to) as a potential pass reciever so obstruction can't be called.

  • @Ali74

    O'Driscoll as the worlds best centre for 10 years, showed again today for the Lions his genius. Set up 2 tries, set up another for Monye who failed to put it down, set up Bowe which was disallowed for tough crossing call, he creates mayhem, just like he did to France in 2000 Six nations with hat trick in Paris 8 weeks after same French team outclassed and outskilled NZ in WC semi in an open game as they didnt have an O'Driscoll
    Had scrum gave O'Driscoll & Roberts parity possession, Lions win

    @AdamR2468 When a player throws the ball up in the air as O'Driscoll did he is still in control of the ball and as such he retains possession of the ball. This would mean that it is fact obstruction because the defender was prevented to tackle the player "in possession" of the ball. So unfortunately there would be something illegal about it.

    Best centre to ever play the game.

  • @bidefordrfc
    @bidefordrfc 13 років тому

    Ok, im going to tell you all why this is perfectly fine:
    We see players all the time who run with the ball, bounce off a tackle and lose the ball, before it hits the ground the regain control of the ball and there is no penalty, no scrum etc etc etc.
    therefore this is exactly the same. BOD "loses control" of the ball, and regains it, before it touches the ground....
    No problems...

    I agree, O'Driscolls been impressive all things considered but is already playing less during the year to ensure he's fresh for the internationals. That and his off the field sponserships is one of the main reasons for him not going abroad to earn more in France for example, he would have been burnt ot by now. France are favourites but you never know, should be a good game in any case

    @Cryoah Also true, but in the case of a scissors move (which this is fairly similar to), if the dummy runner takes out a potential tackler it can be classed as obstruction

  • @Cryoah
    @Cryoah 13 років тому

    @duncandohnut1993 True in case of a kick, but now, there was a teammate running a straight line calling for the ball, he wasnt trying to stop any opposition players. What brian did was basically a miss pass to himself, and as with a normal miss pass, the dummy runners aren't doing any obstruction whatsoever

  • @PadtheLad12
    @PadtheLad12 11 років тому

    Technically it's only forward IF the ball a) touches the ground b) touches the opposition or c) touches another player on your team. If you want you can chuck the ball forward as far as you want, just as long as it touches NOTHING but yourself and you catch it. It's perfectly legal just very hard to do and very controversial. But it's legal.

    I didn't affirmate that he really was "THE BEST" center of the world. If you read carefully, you would see I wrote "one of the best" which is different. I didn't talk about "genius", or maybe I would have to buy glasses (even if my eyes don't need to). Rugby is a sport, and an art. I'm always happy to watch some new crazy moves even if "the possession was lost" (seriously, i don't care of that, I think there is things more important in the world). Fun and Show. @xxPanteraxxx I think he's trying to say NZ mostly deny that O'Driscoll is as good as he is because well, he isn't theirs. If he played for a NZ club or was a Kiwi himself, they'd be singing his praises.
    But after those 4 warm up matches, 2 of which I attended at the Aviva, there wasn't a lot of our main players missing. So if we play like that and that is near enough to our best squad, we don't stand a chance in that case.
    I personally, like Keith Wood, think it's Australia's time this year.

    12.1 (e) of the IRB laws of rugby states:
    (e) Intentional knock or throw forward. A player must not intentionally knock the ball forward with hand or arm, nor throw forward.
    Sanction: Penalty kick. A penalty try must be awarded if the offence prevents a try that would probably otherwise have been scored.
    Thus, this moment of 'genius' was illegal, regardless of what the ref on the pitch decided.

    The way I see it, he did a mini miss pass to himself. sure that fooled the defence but he fooled his own #11 in the process. And it is very arguable that it was forward. It looks like he tosses the pass just before the line then catches it at the line.
    My point is that O'Driscoll is a fine player but there are many other plays that he's done that deserve more credit!

    i have no problem with your 'well rounded and fair analysis' and i certainly don't challenge but this is a video hosting site, and not every opinion posted needs to be based and founded on a well-reasoned argument. for example, i am irish. brian o driscoll has done fantastic things for irish rugby and for that reason alone he can held in very high esteem by any irish rugby fan. perhaps to call him the greatest rugby player in the world is being overly zealous but that's sport.

  • @jkino78
    @jkino78 14 років тому

    wasn't forward, wasn't obstruction and certainly wasn't called. they ran back to line up the defence for the lineout. It's no more obstruction than a skip pass would be. As he's running up the line the ref is following the play, and you can tell by the commentator that nothing was blown. I think Carter pulled the same move and if I'm not wrong Campese too

  • @nzkiwipride
    @nzkiwipride 14 років тому

    In my opinion it's not strictly illegal, it's technically just a cut out pass to himself, the player he cut out just happened to be tackled. It would be the same as if he just dummied the pass and ran round anyway. Besides, he didn't achieve much with it.. Innovative play, but he is by no stretch of the imagination, the best centre in the world lol..

  • @radium01

Thats what hickie acted as here. O'driscoll wasnt in possesion of the ball when hickie crossed and obstructed so it is considered a skip pass to himself and so hickie didnt commit crossing

    I meant that McCaw had the best credentials last year.
    And to be fair in looking at his stats, BOD hasnt had much competition in Ireland. he has had so many games to score those trys, this is both to do with him being a great player and a lack of depth in ireland.
    Take NZ wings for instance, in the last ten years Jeff Wilson, Tana Umaga, Joeli Vidiri, Jonah Lomu, Joe Rockococo,Sitiveni Sivivatu, Doug Howlett and many more world class players have been vying for 2 spots on the field.

      Rome Waerea but he didn't obstruct the tackler from the ball carrier because at the time no one was carrying the ball, it was in the air. So no tackle could legally be made anyway. Besides the fact that the tackler was committed to the other player anyway.

      The defender committed to the wrong attacker was onside at the point where the trick happened. There's nothing illegal there. It's no different to a screen pass or switch pass where the defender and attacker make contact after the ball has moved on.
      Had the defender been following BOD the whole way and been prevented from reaching him by an offside attacker that would be obstruction.

    Senior Males is what you're looking for NZ still has about 5.000 more, closer than I thought but the reality is that the vast majority of registered players in NZ are still playing Rugby. In Ireland it's not the case, they keep names on even when players are gone on to Gaelic games. With the pro era numbers have grown(unlike NZ money only entered the game for us with professionalism) so as the rankings show we're on the up! Before you deny that money was in the game b4 pro in NZ, skip it

    If you have a look at the comments you might see where I'm coming from. It's a long and drawn out argument we've been having. In Ireland we have the opposite, there are more emigrants than immigrants. Flower boy pointed out some guys who were born in Israel and the US so I thought I'd point out the All-Blacks born overseas. In the Irish players mentioned case they also grew up in Ireland.

    As for the Grand Slam, i stand by my statement, its not that much of an acheivement.
    Not only have the All blacks not had a try scored against them on their last 2 NH tours, but it is always banded around that NZ cant win pressure games, or important tournaments.
    Therefore, if winning the tournament with the top 3 teams in the world is not an important tournament, then surely a tournament featuring teams ranked 4-12 cant be that great either?

    And in what regard you hold the trinations is irrelevant. the fact of the matter is it is that the 6 nations doesnt count for much.
    And what does the number of teams matter? theres only 3, but they are number 1,2 and 3 in the world. They could include argentina, fiji and samoa who are ranked ahead of england scotland and italy respectively, but that would just dilute the quality of the competition.

    It's irrelevant as to whether he has the ball or not, he’s not the one running obstruction. The defensive player who is marking O’Driscoll is taken out by the No.11 player. This is who should have been penalised.

    you should really check your facts, the amount of foreign players on the Leinster Team is significantly less than Munster, but as it's club there's no sin in that right? Also if you're implying that Leinster wouldn't have won without Elsom then you're really talking out your arse mate

    that Rugby is the 4th most played sport in New Zealand is arguable, the Grand Slam you are talking about involves just 6 teams, that's the competition you're talking about, if you go back 100yrs you have to include a defeat at the hands of an Irish club team not even the national side and that's without pulling the amount of islanders that NZ naturalize for their national team, a bit like we do with soccer.

    Heh you know what i just found out.
    According to SPARC (the NZ authority on sport) Rugby is the 5th most played sport by males in new zealand, behind golf, cricket, touch and tennis.
    You learn something new everyday. Rugbys 4th in Ireland, 5th in New Zealand, where are your excuses now.
    And Ireland have yet to do anything on the world stage. 6 nations doesnt count for much

    The defender runs into a dummy runner.... and not to mention there is no way that player would have got to O'Driscoll when he "became the ball carrier again"... he was too far away...

    When you're inside a game you do learn something extra, I never used the word expert. As for foreigners, as imigrants we've been less fortunate than you guys. We got Polish and Romanians. If we ever go into gymnastics in a big way maybe we'll get somewhere. The truth about money in the game is that if you're playing the top spectator sport the possibilities are endless. When you have to cancel training through lack of a pitch or play on shit grounds things change.

    What predictions are you on about? I didn't make any. Times are changing doesn't neccessarily mean the AB's. We won the Grand Slam for the first time in 61 years, we're more consistant than ever. As for players being born off shore are you referring to O'Gara? They're so few and far between and from Irish parents so not really worth mentioning. It's certainly not a crucial factor. I should point out again, I never criticised the AB's, your mixing up with someone else.

    ok first off it isn't cossing as it is a dummy switch and the ball is in the air, also it is only a knock on if the ball has touched the ground nad a forward pass is if the player passes the ball and another catches the ball in front of the player. And besides you don't see lobbing because you are most likely to be tackled anyway

    So this is called the "Brian O'Driscoll moment of genius" which, yeah, I agree it was brilliant ... but then nothing happened; no points, no try ... no nothing! While I agree that O'Driscoll is a great player, surely he could have made better from this opportunity.

    Lions equals:
    *Unrealiable front row
    *Outclassed locks, especially a certain ginger haired irishman who would be dropped for next game if he werent captain.
    *Woefully inept loose forwards, none of whom would make SA C team
    *Mike Phillips is Alright, every other halfback is ave
    *Both flyhalfs are off the pace.
    *Adequate wingers
    *Class midfield
    *Amazing Fullback.
    Conclusion, lions lose all three
