I realize this is an old video, but if you do this again, follow these directions. First thing, water the area that you'll be burning. This will give a measure of protection so that any undergrowth or surrounding areas may not accidentally catch fire. And always keep a hose at the ready, just in case. Second; you don't need to burn them with a long flame till they are cooked well done. You only need to give them sufficient wilt using a short blue flame. The heat from the gun is enough to kill them. It may take a day or so for them to die back, but they will. This will also save on propane. Third; if you have access to a hand truck/dolly, strap the tank to it so you can roll it instead of carrying it. Also, if your HF torch fails, buy one that's called Red Dragon. It is highly rated, and It comes with a manual starter. I believe that it's also longer, which means less bending. And one final thought; when you turn on the tank, "slowly" turn it just a smidge and see if you're getting gas at the nozzle of the gun. If you are, then turn the tank open all the way. Propane tanks have a safety shutoff inside, and sometimes, if you open them all the way too quickly, you will get very little gas or none at all from coming out. If that happens, shut off the tank, wait a bit, and start again.
- "you don't need to burn them with a long flame till they are cooked well done" You might not need to, but it's a hell of a lot more satisfying that way. ;-)
its not getting flooded what happening is the gas is coming out too fast for the fuel/air mixture to stay in proximity to a ignition source. alot of good torches will have a seperate fuel source like a butane canister which runs a pilot light which ignites the main fuel feed.
I got the same one a couple months ago and love it. What i've noticed with the push starter is that if the propane is coming out too fast, it won't start. Other than that though, I love it. Going to use it to knock down a line of weeds and growth on the fence line this weekend.
Good tip: I'll try the push starter on a trickle. I really don't mind using the lighter though... quick and easy. I also noticed the unit is so powerful it can blow itself out if you get too close to whatever you are burning.
@@mi-tinkerThis type of fitting does not need tape. Also, there is “Teflon” tape and “Gas” tape. The gas tape is yellow and marked as being acceptable for gas fittings. But with this type of fitting it is not needed. A little knowledge can be dangerous… Internet lore can do more harm than good.
Thanks for the question. It is used on the second half of the video while torching the larger area. The trigger on the handle Increases the amount of Propane released like pressing the gas pedal in your car...
Most of the weeds, including the tall ones, were in check for an entire season. Nearly a year has passed and we are just now having to deal with them again at ankle height. I was pleased with how well it worked!
Hi Ethan, there are a lot of hazards of using the chemicals in round up. Environmentally and your own personal health. Weed killers, such as round up, have been banned in other countries because of being hazardous to humans and animals. Most organic gardeners use this as a prime method for keeping weeds to a minimum. This controlled burn method also seems to last an entire season as well. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
Burning will destroy any seeds on the plants, if done properly. If you use Round Up on a plant that has mature seeds, do the seeds remain viable, even tho the plant dies?
@@jimvj5897 It is my understanding that Round Up will reduce the seed viability but not eliminate it. It also depends on when it is applied. If the plant is no longer green, Round up is ineffective regardless.
Make sure the threads properly sealed on each connection. Don’t want any leaks due to manufacturing issues, user error or cross threading. Good Safety protocol.
Might of had the gas set too high when igniting it, the gas being to high might of blew itself out, either that or the igniter's bad, being brand new, might of had it set too high, the instructions for the 500,000 BTU torch I have say to open the valve just enough to get gas come out of the wand, don't use lighters or matches & pretty much just use a striker to light it, then after it's lit, adjust the gas flow, I've gotten rid of 4 foot tall weeds with the 500,000 BTU torch I got.
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Yes, I also tried a lower gas settings, trying at least 40 variations of gas and igniter combos (not filmed) did not light...for the price I'm ok with using the fireplace lighter!
Hi Noone, thanks for watching and your feedback. I did not experience any warping per your concern, but I also stayed a good foot away from the wood it avoid any over heating. The wetting down was an extra safety precaution.
Hi Nonya, Thanks for the question. While a lawnmower will cut shorter and smaller weeds, it does not kill the weeds. They will just continue to grow and you will need to mow again and again, and again throughout the season. Thus just knocking them down a bit. Using the torch removed the weeds for an entire season. It also helps make existing weed seeds less viable for reproducing where by mowing may just help spread the weed seeds. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
The absolute best video on weed torch. Short and to the point. Excellent work. Convinced me to buy one.
Happy torching...thanks for watching!

Thanks, going to use my friends over the weekend!!!!!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video! My torch needs to be on a very very low gas setting in order for the igniter not to get flooded.
Thanks Tony!!

I picked up the one without ignition switch.

@@mi-tinker Yup, I've had that happen more than once as well! For the price though it is an awesome buy!
Yes, just a trickle to start. I love it. Roasting weeds instead of pulling them. It’s a good idea to dig up some roots afterwards.
Thank for you lession
Thanks for watching!
You may want Teflon tape on the torch connection, the last place you want a leak.
Thanks for watching!

What is the handle for? I did not see you use it at all.

Did the taller weeds remain gone for a while or grow back quickly?

What’s the benefit of this versus spraying the weeds with round up
1) It's more fun.
2) More importantly, in my case I have chickens and other animals that free range in the area.

why must you put soap on it to check for leaks if you just bought the tool

That's a good review. I wonder why the click start didn't work. !:- )
Thanks for watching! I wonder the same thing... however, its a great tool and hard to beat the price!
Need very little gas to start these torches. Igniter worked fine. Way to much gas pressure.
Ultra neat! 😊
Thanks! 😄

Yep, it can definitely blow itself out.
You have it to high when starting it. Lower it and the igniter should work.

Wetting down your wooden fence is just going to make it warp

Gee, my fence must be at risk when it rains…
Why not use a lawn mower??

Does this kill the root as well. I was thinking about getting goats for my yard but, you know, goat shit. Lol
@@captainkangaroo4301 if the roots are shallow it can get them too! Like the goat idea. Would take care of mowing LOL
