2:57 - Back air intake grill completely absent 3:03 - And now it mysteriously shows back up again! I believe the tree scene was done with a fake Herbie, a mostly wooden one I want to say but I can't recall for sure.
Imagine, if the El Dorado had been FIA-sanctioned, how many penalties Jim and Herbie would have been given by Charlie Whiting for ignoring track limits ...
If I recall, the officials specifically said that the El Dorado was "anything goes" in regards to the rules, the emphasis being on speed, endurance, and courage like the first auto races were. First car across the line wins, so shortcuts are perfectly legal here, nevermind all the dirty tricks Thorndyke pulled.
There are some line deliveries in the movies that are nothing short of flawless, and David Tomlinson’s “there are times like this where I really don’t LIKE myself very much!” is one of them.
I love herbies engine the way it sounds and when it reeves up when it starts to go at high speeds . But then again I wonder if that’s really how the car sounded or if it was fake auto .
They drove through an old abandoned Wild West town. It was a ghost town that Herbie and Peter Thorndyke were driving through. At 2.04, Herbie drives out of a saloon bar.
Dopo questa scena il povero Herbie avrà la frizione fottuta! Oltre ai vari danni a telaio sospensioni! 😂 comunque rimane il mio film preferito!! Daje Herbie !!!!
Always wondered something: When they did all those shortcuts and passed between cars running at full speed, how in the world did they do it? I mean, it's obviously real because there was no cgi, but looks so freaking dangerous
stespin they probably edited the cars in later if I had to guess. Kept the camera in the same spot but two shots. Either that or “professional driver on a closed course”
@@tjhamerica I'm not sure they even had the technology to do that in '69, it's 50 years ago. I mean, the only way i can think of is to literally glue Herbie "frame by frame" on the film (if that's even a thing)... that or just a bunch of stuntmen, great timing and a lot of crashes
It was all done in real time. The Herbie used in that particular section was actually a very primitive full size remote controlled car with no real people in it. That same car actually still exists today.
Legal thing back then Disney didn't have rights to have the VW logo on Herbie (at least the outside dont know why they didn't replace the key or the brake pads) or the license to say it in the movie Disney only got the license by the 2nd movie
If I recall correctly, "special" is a racing term for a non-standard car, a custom. Thorndyke's car is a specially modified racer, and Herbie, well how many standard VW bugs do you know that can go that fast or do what Herbie does? For official reasons, Douglas has to claim that Herbie is under the "special" classification in order to race, or face some uneasy questions about how a bone-stock bug can crank out so much power and perform like a racecar.
Non parliamo di te Marco as Jim Douglas che al volante della tua bellissima BMW serie uno per vendicarti di tutte quelle cattiverie che ti ho scritto perché avevo paura che mi cercassi mi faresti morire d'infarto sul lato passeggero
Tennessee: "No more short cuts like that last one Jim."
Jim: "Oh, this won't be anything like that last one!"
😂😂😂😂😂
“There are times like this where I really don’t like myself very much” same dude, same
That's something Dick Dastardly would say as well.
3:08 as Herbie starts to roll away as the doors open, the message is clear: come on, let's go, I'm pissed now, and I'm going after Thorndike.
The stunts they did in the film were crazy! So many close calls.
That has to do with the stuntman Carey Loftin. He did all this stuff
@@dimitrisvythoulkas8435 he was an utter madman-and also the driver of the truck in Duel.
I think he did most of the stunts also in Bullit. He was the driver of Mustang if i am not wrong.

No CGI crap here
I love the tumbleweeds holding up that old shed. Hahahaha
trentbader00 WHAT FOOL LAID OUT THESE STREETS!!!
"Very well, then! Now I'm finished being Generous George!"
Is that a reference to the actor's role in "Mary Poppins"?
A British version of “No more Mr. Nice Guy”, probably.
Probably a tongue-in-cheek reference. After all, it was the same actor. David Tomlinson.
@0:21 I LOVE that takeoff!!!!!
TJ Shields ه،
That was always Herbie's Signature Special Move when he goes Super Saiyan
All practical too kudos for the practical tricks on camera
The crash sound effect is like in other Disney cartoons when Herbie hits the wooden water tower
Thorndyke: What fool laid out these streets?!
You're driving superbly.
hey do you have something against driving on the streets?
Any sign of them ?

Yes, it was a car that had no engine and the metal body was replaced with a fiberglass one. That car was #4 and it also skips the pond
"Generous George" Lol!!
Imagine, if the El Dorado had been FIA-sanctioned, how many penalties Jim and Herbie would have been given by Charlie Whiting for ignoring track limits ...
Stephen Higgins what about Thorndyke's mischiefs?
Stephen Higgins jim could use robby Gordon's excuse: 'The rules say 'Make the checkpoints', and I made all the checkpoints'.
