- Does Gordo even have a BACK to Backslash? Also, are there any moves that IGNORE the opponent's weight? And some other things! Very cool.
I actually didn't go over many individual, different facts in this video -- it just happened that the ones I prepared were ones that I mostly wanted to go really in depth with. I think they're interesting enough to warrant it, though
This game never ceases to amaze me, if you would've told me a few years ago that a series like this could last for potentially several years without getting stale (content-wise), I'd never believe you lmfao

NEW PINNED COMMENT:
I've seen a few people say that the reason why Lightning Buster ignores weight is because of its in-game "piercing" effect, which ignores the enemy's defenses in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. On its own, this seems reasonable and interesting, but there's a few reasons why I didn't think to mention this before and I still don't buy that it was intentional:
The fact that Bowser's whirling fortress ALSO has this set weight feature, despite not (?) having any defense-piercing origin (or origin at all?) felt too weird
Also, the fact that this aspect of Lightning Buster was simply never mentioned in advertising, despite all of the attention recent DLC get with their presentations
But the BIGGEST reason, and the main takeaway here, is because... Lightning Buster isn't the only move in Smash whose origin has some sort of defense-ignoring property. A REALLY good example is also in Mythra's moveset. Sacred Arrow. Her final smash. This move ALSO has the "Pierce" effect in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Yet, looking at the game's script, this move has Set Weight turned OFF (for its entirety). I feel like, out of all the moves to include some unique property like "ignoring weight," it'd be the "big, crazy, unique" final smash, not the completely normal average neutral special, right?
So, I can't REALLY say you're wrong if you think that it's an intentional reference to the move's defense-piercing ability. I just don't buy it, though.
Sakurai designed Burning Sword as the low percent killer FS and Sacred Arrow as the damage dealer. If Sacred Arrow also could kill easily alongside it's massive damage output there'd be little reason to use Burning Sword.
And about the set weight thing, the set weight to 100 gimmick is only for the mid-air versions and the fully charged ground version, the set weight effect does not happen if it's not fully charged on the ground.
At no charge it kills Pichu easily at 200% centerstage, but if we just change characters to Cloud it barely kills, and to Bowser it doesn't kill under the same conditions.
I am confusion ; - ;
That’s fair
_And_ turns out it definitely wasn't intentional because it was fixed in 12.0.0

The reason why Lightning Buster ignores weight is because in xc2, lightning buster ignores the enemy's defence and any defenceive buffs they have
Thats a really "tasty" fact, cool that you actually knew
Yup. It’s one of my favorite details in smash
Interesting, 300hours in xbc2 and I didn't realize this(maybe I forgot or oversighted)
@@chalybee8689 There are A LOT of skills and specials in that game so missing something like that is very easy to do
Correction: In XC2 Lightning Buster increases damage dealt if Rex is at low HP. Photon Edge is the special that has the guard-annul attribute
I didn't play Xenoblade, but apparently the reason lightning buster works this way is because the move in the original game has armor-piercing properties.
Yep, and the reason for which it's not stated anywhere in smash may be a nod to how xenoblade doesn't tell you this either.
XC2’s in-game description for Lightning Buster states that’s it deals more damage when at 30% HP or less. Photon Edge however has guard-annul properties.
@Dabestjoshy what you're saying is true, however I'm speaking about the hidden properties of the specials, which you can see from data mine or like Enel's blade guide videos ;)
@@Dabestjoshy Guard-Annul refers to the block mechanic, Shulk's Monado Buster attack in XC2 has this effect listed, at level 5 it has a 100% chance to annul guards, which means it cannot be blocked whatsoever.
The Pierce Defense effect pertains to the physical and ether defense stat which is attached to the player's blades, such as 10% Physical defense and 25% Ether defense. In that case physical attacks should be doing 10% less than the original damage, but if an attack has the Pierce defense effect linked to it those values are ignored, and the full damage is dealt, they can still be blocked if they don't have annul guard attached to them.
In the main game of XC2, Lightning Buster is an Ether-based AOE attack that pierces defense, so the target's Ether defense value is useless, which allows the move to do full damage, the attack can still be blocked and have its damaged halved by random chance, but it's still extremely powerful regardless, especially with the 2.5 times damage at low HP.
@@Dabestjoshy Lightning Buster also pierces defense. Lots of XC2 specials have hidden properties.
"Set weight is usually used for multihit moves where racking up damage is more important than launching opponents.
Bowser's up special is a multihit meant to rack up damage so I don't know why it has set weight."
Mythra's move is multi-hit too. I thought it was so weird he didn't acknowledge that.
For items like Soccer balls, do there backside change if you use Mario's cape on them.

@@Xenshi. Either that or a trip to Maury.
For a bit more info on Lightning Buster:
In the original game, this move had a property to ignore Defense. I'm thinking it was done on purpose as a reference in that case with how it still has the same killing power no matter who, considering it ignores the "defense" aka weight. Just a fun fact.
That's misinformation being spread around actually. Lightning Buster doesn't have the effect to ignore defence, Photon Edge does. LB deals more damage the lower your HP is
@@soulfire67 I can prove it. If you look up the move's effects, it has a Pierce effect, meaning that any Defense that's calculated is ignored. You're not wrong about the damage buff on low HP
taken from the wiki: "Increases damage dealt by 100%-150% when HP is 30% or less + 50% Critical Hit Modifier + Pierce"
Photon Edge doesn't: "Increases damage dealt to toppled enemies by 100-150% + 25% Critical Hit Modifier"
@@Ramen-ms9xn Oh I didn't know that. I played through XC2 recently and when I saw people mention the annul defence I didn't get what they were saying, since the Affinity Chart only says the increased damage bit. Nowhere does it say in game or in the wiki that LB has a pierce effect. And the Blade Special descriptions aren't helpful either.
Meanwhile on the Affinity Chart, Photon Edge says that it's guard-annulling, which is why I thought it was that they were referring to.
@@soulfire67 I think guard-annulling just means that the attack is unblockable. Blocking is that spherical yellow shield that occasionally bounces your attacks off.
@@soulfire67 yeah. Unfortunately XC2 has some really bad in game descriptions all around
A possible reason for why so few moves have set knockback in Ultimate is as a preventative measure, as set knockback had incredibly bizarre effects in combination with Rage in Smash 4. These effects have been almost entirely removed, but they probably wanted another layer of protection from it happening again.
If you remember, wario’s face gets covered with ink (and stuff like that) first. It is actually the opposite with some Miis, their face gets covered last.
That question in the description is way better than the title.
Fun fact: the question was originally "can gordo be backslashed?"
Do pikmin have a “back” hit box?
(9:00) Both moves are multi-hit. There are mistakes in other moves, so maybe it was a mistake that the last hit was weight-independent too?
2:25. Come on man, don't do my boy luMA dirty like that.
In the spirit training mode (when testing a spirit team) Ness’s Down-B when used on the ground will cause the sandbag to slide along the ground in a very unusual way. This works whether or not you have spirits equipped as well but it only worked in the spirit training mode

Well, in Smash 4.
In case anyone was curious, looks like Kirby's Lightning Buster starts KOing the training dummy at 41% instead of 48%
It's because Kirby's Ⓑ deals more damage than the original Ⓑ, and knockback is correlated to damage.
@@Empy_C. Oh yeah, I was posting this assuming people already knew that, but I guess I could've explained that in the comment too.
Omg I just checked and realized I wasn’t subscribed! I literally love ur channel and literally thought I was already subbed. Regardless I’m subbed now. Keep up the great content
Woah , I can actually use the facts on this video. When I play Mythra , Roy and Corrin I can remember the percents for those moves to use them more often , and then Avoid Bowser at that percent.
I was today years old when i learned backslash does more damage when hitting someones back.
It acts the same in Xenoblade
Same. I fr thought for so long that it sucks it DOESENT do that as thats how it works in xenoblade... even tho it DOES
It’s literally in the name
Probably cuz nobody uses backslash lol
I know Kirby has his whole copy ability on his Neutral-B but it feels like compared to other inhale moves or similar cases (something like absorbing a projectile) he always gets the low end of the stick, sometimes by a lot.
Samus just barely didn’t fully charge charged shot? Here eat this ~30% damage move for 1% back. Oh and eat this fsmash to the face too.
Here's a random smash fact I noticed just watching your video. Even though Gordo is an item it's pupils dilate for a couple of frames when reflected or attacked 👁👁
Speaking of weight dependent moves: Mii Brawler’s Onslaught also does that
Moves that ignore weight without also ignoring % were also present in Smash 4. A famous example was Cloud's Finishing Touch.
Yeah, you, in all games, heal more if u use chomp on a healing item that is consumable
I don't mind if you talk for a long time about one subject that has a lot to talk about. We're here because we're interested :)
Random Smash 4 facts: Cloud's Finishing Touch also had weight-independent knockback in that game, and even though it would also use a set gravity and falling speed, those were only temporary, so Fox would still get KO'd after Bowser despite weighing way less. They changed it to simply deal normal knockback in Ultimate, and actually buffed that knockback overall, which I wouldn't have guessed just from looking at both games.
The fact that they put that kind of knockback on a really strong kill move last game makes me suspect that it was an intentional choice to give it to Mythra this time around as well.
...I still can't say the same for the 2nd hit of Roy's neutral air, and that's in spite of it having this property in both games, lol.
Of course the little extra healing quirk applies to everyone but Kirby. I'm not even surprised. They are fully committed to Kirby's eat being so much worse than the others'.
Kirby can already copy n special, which is super strong
Okay, time for a follow-up query:
If a Gordo is reflected, does its backside change or stay the same?
Or anything
Imagine NOT being subscribed. You’d have to be some kind of major nerd to not be subscribed.
I wonder if backslashing the gordo has any unique combo applications. Theoretically you would be closer to Dedede when backslashing it so maybe you could get a really nice combo off of it.
With the jump boost and jetpack stalling when you lose the bunny hood, this would be because of you're fall speed being reduced when you lose it!
When you're jumping you still have the same upward momentum but your downward acceleration is reduced so you go higher, and with the jetpack this gets weird because the jetpack has a set fall speed, which the bunny hood tries to reduce to set back to normal when you lose it but since it was never increased it just goes really slow.
I was most interested how mr saturn and freezies backs were
Fun fact: these videos always make me happy
Ok now I need to see someone use that special backslash mechanic in an item combo
I can’t believe mythra’s neutral b ignores weight, it explains so much. I always die to it so early as dk and i am always confused
It's so bullshit imo
Lightning Buster ignores weight because in Xenoblade 2, it ignores defense. It would be OP if treated your weight as the lightest to truly ignore defense. It's just a reference to the source game.
The in-game description for Lightning Buster in XC2 says it increases damage dealt when at 30% HP or less. Nothing about defence.
Any idea if it’s true even if the game doesn’t say?
It also has an unmentioned pierce effect (this means it ignores defence)
Fun fact if you change the colors of ice climber you can change to nana you can see it from the hair
backslash positions might change when influenced by a reflector. also the bunny hood modifying jumps as it is discarded is probably the character jumping on or into the item itself.
I just checked, and it looks like in Xenoblade, Mythra’s Lighting Buster pierces enemy defense, dealing the same damage to all enemies. The way defense works in that game is pretty similar to how weight works in smash bros, so it might actually be an intentional reference to that.
Source: Enel’s blade guide on her.
The items spawn direction makes sense to me. No point in randomizing the direction of the detection when it spawns.
Although it is odd to me how backslash interacts with that detection still.
I've always felt there was something peculiar about Roy when compared to the other Marths that went beyond his gimmick of "close range = more damage".
Now I finally know!
Red hair.
Home run bat does 58 because it sends gordo at a high velocity
It’s velocity is what determines damage
You forgot to mention that the Set-Weight mechanic actually results in the kb to be calculated based off fall speed. Pichu and bowser are bad examples cause they have close fall speeds. Compare someone like donkey kong and fox. Fox dies so much later than dk to vertical launching moves with that property like mii brawler's onslaught which is a vertical kill move that shows off this property really well.
Don't remember who, but there's a video about the front/back mechanic. How Link can shield items sent from opponents facing him, but items that are sent out by opponents facing the same direction as him when flying back (like a boomerang) will instead not be protected by the shield since the "back" if the items hits first and not the "front". There's a lot of weird stuff with that.
That's in another video on this channel
I have a theory regarding why the gordo goes the direction it does when hit on the back with backslash
most moves that hit characters force them to turn around to face the direction they were hit from. HOWEVER, backslash will leave the opponent facing away when you hit their back. Maybe the reason gordo flies backwards is because its not getting turned around, and it always flies away from the direction it's facing?
"And the same is true for Luna."
I tried so hard to believe he said Luma
I honestly think they turned set weight on for the linking hits of Lightning Buster and Whirling Fortress, and just forgot to turn it off for the final hit.
Fact: when in training mode as Olimar, Pikmin cannot do damage (outside of aerials) if you are in the training menu (where you set cpu damage, number of cpus etc). Same thing with items too, (I tested using hammer and home run bat). Also also, Olimars nair side tilt and up tilt also have this weird property.
Links returning boomerang has set knockback I’m pretty sure
A launch move that ignores weight sounds like one of the most broken things ever except for most of Hero's moves.
Fact, if Hero uses bounce, it can reflect Jokers grapple (I don't know if other reflectors can do this). This means that it is a projectile.
Video: Enough talking about Backslash, let's move on to something else, but first, maybe subscribe? *shows subscribe button*
My mind: *backslash subscribe button*
Mii brawler's Side special (the multi hit one) has set knockback and sends upwards so it can actually kill bowser earlier than pichu, also the move has a "2nd rage", basically the more damage the mii has the more KB it does, so it also works in training mode and im pretty sure it stacks with normal rage.
I was wondering why the hell that move KO'd so early
@@KaitouKaiju ikr lol
The first hit of Mythra's up-special also has set knockback. I didn't test this extensively. I cite the trajectory guide in training mode.
Useful fact: if you counter ness's f-smash as sephiroth the bat will reflect the counter and deal 63 damage
Yea this was a fun surprise when I accidentally had it happen during a match
If you run into sephiroth then shield when he throws megaflare it will go through your shield without it taking dmh
Yalll know what time it is! Discord squad rise! Luv ur content PK, been keeping up since I saw u on TF2
I think that the back of someone is not determined by where you hit them, but rather by their facing angle (in this game, it's either left or right, not counting z-axis). If you attack someone not facing you, it's counted as a "back hit".
6:50 The move you're using ALSO has independent weight knockback on the second hit, or at least on Roy. That's why I remember a Roy main using so frecuently N-air instead of F-air against LeoN's Bowser. Considering LOTS of features on the game, specially on DLCs, ARE intentional, this might have a reason to be, but I haven't played Xenoblade 2 so I don't know what exact reason it could be.
Maybe for Lightning Buster they meant to have it ignore weight for all hits but the final one? Similar to Marth? but then they just forgot to turn the weight back on for the last hit or something
Grounded Woosh and Pit Up tilt have set knock back, too.
Okay that fact about Lightnigh Buster is so cool! It's definitely intentional, because in Xenoblade 2, Lightning Buster pierces defenses, which means it always does the maximum damage, regardless of an enemies defense. They could have 5% damage reduction or 50% damage reduction, it doesn't matter. So cool! Can't explain why Whirling Fortress or Roy Nair have that though.
I wonder if the back of the Gordo is determined by where DeDeDe was when he launched it, or if it changes if DeDeDe runs past it or gets teleported past it. I would assume that it's where he was when he launched it, but many years ago I assumed something similar about how damage falloff is calculated for soldier's rockets in tf2 and I was wrong then so I wonder still.
Did you know?: The paddles on the [Not Pong] Assist Trophy can apparently reflect projectiles!
In Xenoblade 2, Lightning Buster’s gimmick is something to do with breaking a guard (I don’t know, I haven’t played XC2 yet but I want to so please don’t spoil anything) so that is more than likely why Lightning Buster ignores weight. Nice touch, Sakurai!
It ignores defense/special armor. So yes same principle as breaking a guard
14:54 I know it isn't smash related but that spy got fucking DEMOLISHED
Weird fact, if Robin uses a metal box his bronze sword and tomes will become metal, but his Levin sword will not.
So I checked mythra neutral b on ganon on bf, it didnt kill when it was supposed to
... That jetpack thing only working with an up-input on the analog stick is so strange.
That's so odd. This game is strange.
Oof. 2 facts in 10 minutes for this episode.
Mii Swordfighter's Gale Strike (tornado) will always put opponents into the spin (reel) hitstun animation, regardless of their percent. This seems to be the only move that has this property, and what's really weird is that it also launches at an angle that can normally NEVER cause the spin animation. To make things even weirder, it will always put opponents into tumble ("knocks them down"), even if it does less knockback than would normally be required to do so (this can be seen by hitting Yoshi out of his double jump).
He Protecc
He Attacc
But most importantly...
He got a BACC
Mythras lightning buster no longer ignores weight from the 12.0.0 patch
0:11 Funnily enough, so do Mr. Saturns.
You should try and set the computers to 2 on training mode, have zoruark hit the second one, then set computers to 1 while in the middle of it :)
Lightning Buster ignoring weight would be deliberate. In XC2 the move has an unstated property called Pierce. Moves with this property ignore the target's defence stat (including buffs to defence and negative defence) but can still be blocked to halve damage (unless they also have the guard-annul effect, which IS stated unless it is on a level IV special, which don't list their effect at all (if they have one, a few don't)), and ignoring the target's weight is the Smash equivalent of that. It should be noted that this effect is present on most of Mythra's specials, including her rank IV Sacred Arrow.
The only thing in XC2 that STATES presence of the pierce effect is a passive belonging to the OTHER light-element Blade obtainable without buying DLC. Everything else we only know has it because datamine.
Doesn't catalyst have an art that states the presence of the pierce effect? And there's a blade accessible after beating the game with the same passive.
@@JoeThomas-lu6fy Catalyst might but I NEVER use Catalyst, so I can't remember its Arts at all. I like using two of the Land of Challenge Blades on Nia, so I don't need it since that gives me Arts that do the same job.
Transmigration's effect is NOT pierce. It INVERTS defence, which causes enemies that normally have a substantual amount to instead have massive negative defence and take even more damage than Pierce would, which is why it has a chance instead of always working and also doing somthing else.

Oh no hes become a backslash addict..
I'm not sure if this is also true in Ultimate, but it in Smash 4, Cloud's Finishing Touch was weight independent and had a harsh vertical launch angle. This meant that Fox would do better at surviving Finishing Touch than Bowser due to his naturally high FALL SPEED.
Now EVERY weight independent move works like that apparently.
