Exactly! My guitars were stolen last year and I tried a Harley Benton XT22. I like it better than any Gibson or PRS I have ever played and I played a dozen American PRS and PRS SE's as I was about to buy a PRS when I was robbed. I bought the HB 35 Plus and I will be orderung a Stratocaster. a CST24. and an acoustic Next week when I decide on which acoustic I want. I will have less than $1200.00 in 5 guitars, less than I was going to pay to replace my American Strat. And I am buying a new Harley Davidson with the savings

I once had an Indonesian Ibanez rg. I really loved that guitar, but I figured I should get a prestige version. I saved up for awhile and finally got my "dream" guitar. Turns out that while it was a great guitar, I still preferred my Indonesian with upgraded DiMarzio pickups.
I sold the prestige and learned an important lesson. Even boutique builders will tell you what a crapshoot guitars can be sometimes with how all the woods come together and resonate. Always try before you buy with a guitar.

It's getting harder and harder to deny that "cheap" guitars are closing the gap with the big names. And going on bang for the buck alone . . . . really, there's no comparing. My Harley Benton Les Paul Jr. clone (single P90) compares FAVORABLY to the "real thing." Not comparably. I mean FAVORABLY. But I did need to do a little nut work and action adjustment on the HB. I'll say this about expensive guitars, they're fun to use and play precisely because they're expensive. It's like eating from an expensive dining set, it feels better, because you know it cost more. And of course there will be some more attention to detail and perfection in a more expensive instrument, but is it x20 better? I definitely think there's some law of diminishing returns stuff going on.

Often the problem is not about the sound but about hardware, neck, fret, and so on. Many years ago I use to have a Vester Randy Roads and I couldn't play the tapping, when I got the Jackson I could. Maybe it was just because the Vester fret needed a maintainance.

The only small downside I see are the tuners (which you can swap any time with some good ones) and the bridge, the screws are not always staying quite putt... 200e vs 4000e instrument.
Of course are different...basic vs "high end".
Soundwise, with a few mods the cheap one will be close 95%, but the most important thing is the difference in feeling, like you said....chep filipino mahogany and maple soapwood vs solid african mahogany and maple.
Now, you can imagine how much of the difference it would make if the Prs mahogany was old and air dryed insteed of baked in kiln like every "high end" guitar.
Lord, the old luthiers rolling in their graves!
4000 for baked wood? This is no door, table, or boat, damn it!
Of course it is still a music instrument, but in the end of the day an overpriced "high end cheepo".

Feelings? Yes I was feeling down when I paid 2600 US equivalent for my Aria SB bass two weeks after my purchase. I'm OK now, I love the bass for what it is, but never again. Fun thing is though, my favorite bass I'm playing 99.9% of the time, is the Danelectro DC Korean reissue I got from a friend used for 150 USD equivalent and a meal. Also for some reason I also liked playing the 350 USD equivalent Washburn RB2000 more than my more expensive basses, 10 years back.
I see how materials, labor and electronics could run you up to 2000 USD, but anything beyond that is just pure profits, considering like you have said, you can get most any guitar or bass up to the specific sound you want with couple of modifications and purchases. My limit now is 1000USD for any bass guitar I might by in the future, I wont go past that, and I wont be disappointed either.

It all comes down to what you want/ can afford. PRS is more expensive because they give more time and attention to making sure the guitar is the absolute best it can be by spending the extra money on parts for material like the nut, bridge, tuning keys, electronics, fret material, etc.
If you dont want to spend the money on a new one; the used market is great for finding one at a more reasonable price. The CE’s and SE’s are great alternatives if you want something in the PRS realm but wanna keep it more budget friendly. I’d love to try a HB to see what the quality is like.

Most of what you pay for is the name and the little details that any average person wouldn't ever notice, for the price of a Harley Benton, it is an incredibly good guitar, very well made and attention to detail at that price point, I have 2, I have an SC Custom in Lemon flame, put Gibson 57 classic pickups and Gibson pots and it is an amazing guitar, to me it is basically a Gibson Les Paul, I picked up a Custom 24 today that is brand new from Music go round, still had the plastics on it for $200 with a gig bag, I will throw in a set of high end, great sounding pickups and it's as good as any guitar out there, the neck profile, shape, feel is excellent, it's perfect for my hand, plays incredibly well, feels great, love it, it's worth every penny.

There is usually a trade off between quality and price that is noticeable. With most goods skill levels have little effect on the ability to appreciate and get the most from them but guitars are an exception together with most musical instruments (as perhaps are high end sports cars, cameras etc ?). One thing I have noticed in life is that quality is most noticeable by it's absence and the great thing about most affordable instruments these days is that they are of reasonable (but not perfect) quality for those of us with threadbare wallets :) .

Now you have invested $500 on something thats worth $150 to most people. Sure you could pull out the good pickups when you sell the HB but why not just buy a used $500 guitar that was $750 or more when new and enjoy the trouble free use knowing you wont lose a dime on the deal if you sell it? No duties unless the price reaches a certain point I think around $1500. The problem is as I have experience that if there is an issue with the gear not being as it should but functional (for me it was that they routed the control cavity too deep and the plate sat 1/16 too deep, slightly deeper at other areas, cosmetic but should not be on an $800 guitar) Thomann made a small cost adjustment but I had to balance the bitterness of looking at that defect forever or forking over $85 to ship it back in addition to the $30 I spent to get it here. It makes the bargain much less attractive. Would I buy from them again? Never a guitar. Never. If it were electronics there are warrantys and authorized service centers but shipping back to Europe is a pain in the ass and this experience has been illuminating. Who knows perhaps they save the factory seconds to ship overseas customers banking on the high shipping costs for returns will force the buyer to just accept the defects. There is no way to tell. I'll never do it again. So is it still a bargain? It's a roll of the dice with a higher cost for returns than MF ever would charge.

I am not a PRS fan, nor hater. PRS left me quite cold until I played a DGT. The playability, feel, tone, finish, pickups, cabling layout are exceptional and inspiring. All of that comes into account when playing a guitar. Are they worth 5 grand ? Is a Ferrari worth 100 grand ? The answer is up to you. You have the choice to save, find a nice used one for about half the price. Still expensive but starting to be worth the stretch. You can also look into Warmoth and build it up to your specs, or Kiesel and do the same. Both are great brands but be ready to lose $$ big time whenever you want to sell one. The resale value is zilch in comparison with the real value of the instrument. To sum it all up: a "me too" HB will have the look of a PRS but (almost) none of its benefits but it will cost you less than 300 $. But you are playing the lottery with quality control. Some might be very good, some might be crappy. If you can't physically try them in a shop, you are running the risk of having to return it a number of times before (and if) you find the right one. It can be a VERY frustrating experience. A nice Kiesel or Warmoth build for about 2K$ will give you lots of bang for the buck as long as you use it, but a crappy resale value. A PRS will cost you a fortune, give you lots of satisfaction playwise once you get over the spending. And in case you have second thoughts, the resale value will leave you with a comfortable sum. Your call ! Thomann is playing on both sides, as they carry both PRS and Harley Benton… for them, it's a win-win situation 😉🤘🏻

      I own both a PRS Cu24 2007 model and a Kiesel/Carvin CT6 2016 model(that's their PRS-style model),got them both 2nd hand.I also have a SE Tremonti Custom 2013 ltd. edition,which I modded beyond recognition and have played the hell out of it,so I'm not a ''PRS Hater''.
The PRS has nothing on the CT6,in terms of build quality, fretwork or playability. In fact, the upper fret access is better on the CT6,due to the very deep cutaway and the neck is super comfy. The flame maple top is almost perfectly bookmatched and looks insane, according to the original owner,he didn't paid extra,it's a standard top in blueburst finish.PRS would label a similar top as a ''10 top'' and charge you 300 Euros extra.I can't comment on their pickups, because the orig.owner put Duncans on it(JB/59 set),but I doubt they're worst then other stock pickups by Gibson,PRS or Ibanez.Frank Zappa used their 11 pole pieces humbuckers, back in the day, they can't be that bad.
The only negative thing, was the Wilkinson V50 tremolo, which I replaced with a GOTOH/Wilki V100,easy mod, took less then 10 min. But,Kiesel doesn't offer the Wilki anymore, since 2017 they offer the Hipshot Contour trem. Stainless steel frets are also standard, something which PRS doesn't even offer as an ''Artist Package''-option,which I find absurd, considering their prices.
In the end of the day,do you wanna pay for the brandname or the features?
