- A US Army soldier, Gordon Black, was detained in Russia on May 2 on charges of stealing money from a woman. Russian newspaper Izvestia, quoting an unnamed source, said the Army sergeant based-in South Korea met a woman from Russia's far eastern port of Vladivostok on the Internet. Izvestia reported that the US soldier beat her and stole 200,000 roubles ($2,200) from her. Watch

Why would an American soldier visit Russia, the enemy of his country? He would be closely monitored to see if he is spying and definitely be jailed if he commits a crime in Russia.

Maybe because of their run ins with the authorities there (his mother describes their relationship as "volatile") she was eventually deported. That when he went running after her. I don't believe she wanted to see him again once she was back in her home country.
