  • This was the years when Amtrak, got into the freight and hauling business. They had Material handling, and Roadrailers that they tacked on the rear of their cross country trains. This is Part II.

    The thought of Amtrak hauling freight actually has crossed my mind Eventhough Amtrak is primarily passenger I like the idea to be honest

    Thanks for sharing, I miss seeing the old Mail trains. When the PO Dept. dropped the RPOs,the RRs dropped their passengers.

    This was surely an interesting time for Amtrak. Some of their P40, and P42's was still getting painted into phase 5 all their other equipment.

    Nice video, Jack! It's nice seeing the mix of Phase III, IV, and V on those Genesis units.

    1:38 26 cars long, and only 3 of those carried passengers. Wow.

    I love the shot at night 6:45 you can see a nice flame or heat coming out the first P40

      That was neat Ryan. Caught a couple freights there as well, that was pushing a flame as it passed. Thanks for watching...

    Thank you for chasing these trains. I recall there was a movement to revitalize the R.E.A., in conjunction with the roadrailers. I hope you can make a full length narrative documentary.

      That would be neat if they do revitalize this service. We'll see.

    I think they had a couple derailments involving the Material Handling Cars due to excessive bouncing over less than perfect track and might have put a speed restriction on them at some point.

      I think you’re on the right track. I wouldn’t imagine freight likes to handle well at 90 mph lol. However, I remember hearing that it wasn’t the MHCs, it was the boxcars and such. The MHCs did fine on the NEC on the Fast Mail (trains 12 and 13). The MHCs were purpose-built and had special high speed trucks which allowed them to be run at passenger speeds. The boxcars only really got some minor to moderate upgrades, not much else. I think that’s what the problem was. I can’t remember the speed limit that was set, but if I had to guess it would be anywhere between 70 and 79.

      As much as I'd love to see that service restored, I'm sorry to say that it may be little more than a distant pipe dream.

    Awesome at 1:03 what ever happened to that original phase v paint scheme the genesis locomotives used to have ?

    • @blackbirdgaming8147
      @blackbirdgaming8147 3 роки тому +1

      It was only applied to some of the units. Eventually it got phased out in favor of the current Phase V scheme.

    Out of curiosity, did Amtrak turn a profit in this venture? And I do remember seeing these in the late 90s in Harrisburg Pa where I lived.....

    • @1jackdk
      @1jackdk  3 роки тому +3

      I don't think they did Mike. I think the host railroad was killing them with switching fees, because Amtrak was dipping in to their service. Plus CR/NS was pushing that 'Triple Crown" service. Thanks for watching...
