Ooh, I just picked up an Ott lite at auction - a new one (25). Looks just like that one and has three colours temps too. Probably the US version.

Excellent, if you find a US link for it, do let me know?

Just ordered mine this weekend, for those that are interested, there is a sale going on right now, and I was able to purchase mine for $53.69US , including taxes and shipping to a USA address.

Most LEDs are week in the reds, which your written review suggests in the case with this lamp. It seems, though, that the technology is advancing and that some companies are now producing LEDs without pronounced spectral deficiencies. For example, waveform lighting has an D50 LED strip that meets meets ISO 3664:2009 requirements. Perhaps similar such LEDs will soon be replacing the fluorescent bulbs currently used for the evaluation of prints.

Yes, there are some interesting developments in LED output quality. For a basic desktop lamp, the 5000K setting for the Grafilite 2 is a lot more 'convincing' than the 2700K setting. I've not seen any of the latest 'pro' level lighting to look at though.

Hey Keith! Today I made a few prints on my Canon Pixma pro 200. The prints came out great and normal as always, the only difference is that the white columns around the prints look really uneven. When I look at my printer while its printing I can even see that its a little tilted. I don't think the options will help, I always set the page margins to uniform. Is there a way to fix this?

I've not seen this on larger prints - the printer is supposed to have a de-skew aspect to the feed. There may be settings in the detailed printer config menu, but I've not checked this out I'm afraid.

I just brought one today, and found out that it doesn't have a 6500K light. While my monitor (I think for most monitors) was calibrated under D65, how do I use the lamp for comparison?

You don't need a match - just keep the two apart so you turn your head to look from one to another.
I've quite bit of stuff about test images and using them

@@KeithCooper But wouldn't they look different sinceI'm comparing them under different temperature?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  7 місяців тому

Yes but that doesn't actually matter ;-) - you can never precisely compare print with screen anyway...
Also in shifting your head it effectively resets visual white balance - the key is actually getting similar brightnesses

Thanks Keith. This is really useful. How do you rate the lamp 2 years down the line? Still worth buying? Is there something better?

I still prefer the original ott-lite tube based lamp if I'm honest. One of the pins on the power supply broke, so it doesn't get used that much - the ilfolux I looked at more recently is more generally useful.

Even grayscale print on Canon G550 under GL2 (5000K) looks good (neutral). ;-)

Yes, the G550 can give good results, but it takes some work ;-)

Put the plastic sheet into a sink of hot water then press it

Ah - I used a tea towel and warm iron - didn't like the plastic in the end - too small
