ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ನದಿ ಜೋಡಣೆ ಯೋಜನೆ (NRIP) ನೀರಿನ ಅಭಾವವನ್ನು ಪರಿಹರಿಸಲು, ಪ್ರಾದೇಶಿಕ ನೀರಿನ ಅಸಮತೋಲನವನ್ನು ಕಡಿಮೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಮತ್ತು ದೇಶಾದ್ಯಂತ ನೀರಿನ ಸಂಪನ್ಮೂಲಗಳ ವಿತರಣೆಯನ್ನು ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಲು ಭಾರತ ಸರ್ಕಾರವು ಕೈಗೊಂಡಿರುವ ಉಪಕ್ರಮವಾಗಿದೆ. ಜಲಶಕ್ತಿ ಸಚಿವಾಲಯದ ಅಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಜಲ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ (NWDA) ನೇತೃತ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ, ಈ ಯೋಜನೆಯು ಹೆಚ್ಚುವರಿ ನೀರಿನ ಜಲಾನಯನ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾಲುವೆಗಳು, ಜಲಾಶಯಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಅಣೆಕಟ್ಟುಗಳ ಜಾಲದ ಮೂಲಕ ನೀರಿನ ಕೊರತೆಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ನೀರಿನ ಜಲಾನಯನ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಂಪರ್ಕಿಸುವ ಗುರಿಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ.
