My uncle, nautically inclined, upon the conclusion of his service in the US Navy in 1946, came home to Cape Cod and bought a boat. It was a sail boat. Specifically a sloop. He named it after his grandfather who took him sailing as a boy and was also a veteran of the US Navy when the Union fought the Confederacy. His first name was John and his last initial was B. So not aware of the song made famous by the Beach Boys though much older than that, my uncle had a sloop named John B. Fast forward to my childhood. I had just graduated kindergarten and so I had the long summer vacation to look forward to and I was invited to spend a couple of weeks of that with my cousins, aunt and uncle. Naturally my uncle took us all sailing. The first time I heard this song was while sailing in a sloop named John B. My uncle had it played every time he hoisted up the sails as he left the harbor. The song, the boat and the waters off Provincetown harbor were breathtaking separately but an almost religious experience when taken together. To this day I cannot hear this song without flashing back to that day in my childhood 57 years ago. RIP Uncle John.
What a beautiful memory. I was caught up in it, as it brought me back to my youth growing up on eastern Long Island. The summers were spent on the beach and the boats. ❤
Love these guys, seen them perform a few times, and got horribly drunk with them once. All of them are true gentlemen, and always make time for everyone. Best of Britain 👍
There is not much that impresses me about Britain anymore even though I am an Army Veteran and getting on in years. But these guys remind me where I come from and we have some culture still left the doo gooders haven't taken away.
Do gooders who have opened our borders and clapped while our culture has been displaced all over the nation while shouting ‘racist’ at anyone who doesn’t want to see our nation taken over and the natives displaced
This version brings tears to my eyes, it reminds me of the whole room singing along at my late brother in law wake. This was his favourite song to sing along to with a pint or two after playing rugby for Llangwm. 😢
Long my favorite Beach Boys tune, but it's these guys, who live and breathe the life, that give the story the dramatic heft worthy of a proper sea shanty.
I was at the festival that year and they were brilliant. They started sampling the mulled cider at the hot cider stand a lot, and we ran into them later that night and they were legless (we had to prop some of them up!). Next morning they were giving a workshop in club tent and they were so hungover some could hardly stand, let alone sing! Lovely bunch of guys who were just so surprised they had found fame
I was a small boy, 4 maybe 5, on Sundays my Scottish Grandmother always had me for a few hours to herself, Episcopal church at 8:15, tea with a few of her friends and the old Victrola playing old recordings. The lady who was my Grans best friend from Scotland asked me to pick a record, I didn't know how to read very well yet, but I saw a Kingston Trio record just like my older sister had. The song she played was Sloop John B. I remember my older sister "swooning" over the Beach Boys version. I liked it well enough, but the Kingston Trio version was "traditional"... they did a little JAH MAN type of Jamaican or Bahaman accent. The song is very old, a sea shanty of a type that no one has ever been credited for writing it. Carl Sandberg brought it to the worlds attention and had an arraignment done for the tune... Or so the story goes. Your version was the best I've ever heard, bit of the sea in me, 20 yrs US Navy.
Funny where football chants come from!!! I would never have guessed!! (Vichai had a dream, to build a football team. He came from Thailand and now he's one of our own. Champions of England, you made us sing that. For anyone wondering)
These guys are doing Sheffield City Hall in September, on the 12th, I hope it's not the same night as my September grading if I'm doing it, never mind if it is, I'll see if I'm ready for the Christmas one.
I'm also from Philippines. I've been following these fishermen ever since I saw their movie. Listening to them felt like I've experienced Cornish culture first-hand. Wished we also had sea shanties in our country.
Benjamin Teeter I’m aware, I’ve been a fan of them for awhile! The arrangement was so well done that it transfers you to that image, which is hard to do in a cappella performance!
I first heard the Lonnie Donegan version of this in the late 50's or early 60's and his will always remain my favourite interpretation. I particularly like the version with Van Morison on 'The Skiffle Sessions.' But it's interesting to hear it acapella - this has a nice nautical flavour, and I can see why people like it.
Amazing 200 if these views must ve mine I just keep hitting replay. I am going to come from Australia to visit you guys soon. Amazing voices, and one of a kind.
@@flowerpower8722 Fisherman's Friends the movie, it's £3.99 on Amazon if you fancy it, or £7.99 to keep, there's a Fisherman's Friends 2 coming soon apparently.
Just wonderful to see the joy of men singing, escaping the endless criticism and put downs they face in the modern world.

Amen, Brother. I sailed the same waters as a kid. God Bless you and your uncle.

Thank you. I always picture them as you described. Nice blokes that'll share a pint an swap stories.
@@jonnygranville281 genuinely lovely people, if you can get to see them at a smaller venue, do so
Didn’t get into a fight? Hope they didn’t get broke up and had to go home
I would love to get drunk with them
Thanks for sharing !

You know the song itself is Bahamian and was popularized by an American band?
Gorgeous men!!!!!! No plastic here. What a beautiful contrast to what the entertainment industry has become.
Amazing!

Watching in 2021! I hope these guys are still enjoying their much deserved success. It would be quite a treat to see them perform in person.
Community support and great song done quite well--/ a fabulous choir full of fun and music

saw the fishermans friends movie a few weeks ago, it was brilliant
I saw the film last year and loved it! 😊
There's a lot in this song. A lot of depth. Sung so beautifully. I listen over and over. Thank you.
So much timing involved with the singing.
I'm in a pub, drinking a beer, these blokes start to sing, I know I'm going to be a fair few more.
Would LOVE to see these men singing!!! 🤩🇬🇧
That’s the best rendition of Sloop John B I’ve ever heard. Kudos!

Could only give one thumbs up.Deserves many more.
Honestly, the best version I’ve heard. Simply brilliant.
This is the Beach Boys cut down version. The song is called Nassau Bound but was edited to fit a 45. Tom Lewis sings the full song.
*TheAce24:* The Fendertones also do an excellent job on this song!
@@janishart5128 they do..they nail the BB version.

just watched the film about the boys.... and hearing you live....bloody good on you all....
Impressed that the crowd actually claps along in perfect time.
It’s at a folk festival - don’t surprised if the crowd joins in the chorus in 4-part harmony😅
these guys are so great. We watched the movie a few days ago and I've been listening to them here and there on UA-cam ever since. haha
Loved every second of it
This rendition gives me life :D
LOVE LOVE LOVE listening to them! Truly amazing men!!! I'm a big fan of your sea shanties!

This sounds like something you could actually imagine sailors singing to get through the day
They're 10 actual fishermen who just happened to be discovered, so yes.

This is fascinating! It's like the original song but influenced by the Beach Boys chords and harmony.
The best, most realistic "unvarnished" version of a classic folk song...
That was grand!

I was noticing that they all seem like they could take care of themselves in a bar, either as individuals, or a group.
Gerat music, maken me so happy
Dang, gentleman. The Beach Boys wish they could’ve sounded this good. Well done.
😂
The BB are better
Fantastic!
Sailing is something special, do it sometime in your life before you miss out, I have my first boat at 55 , no wonder they sang about it
