You had me at the thumbnail. At first I thought this would be a bizarro Christmas-themed episode where Man-Bat disguises himself as Santa Claus to break into Gotham’s houses and steal their valuables like in _How The Grinch Stole Christmas._ Looking forward to the next one 😊.
Does this story take place during Mayor Hill's reelection campaign? The newspaper that Kirk is reading on the plane is the same as Bruce's in The Clock King. 😉
I always liked the part of when the father-in-law has the realization that it’s his daughter that transforms now. She is distraught, despite him preaching that he thought the serum was the next stage of human evolution when he realizes what’s happened to his daughter he willingly destroys the research.
Considering how Francine's torn shirt only really covers her neck while she's the bat-creature, that means this episode had a topless female flying around for a lot of it.
One part I find hilarious is the Indy right after their embrace Batman just leaves and just leave them on top of that bridge. He doesn’t help them down anyway he just leaves them there. I feel like an hour later he realized his mistake and went back while they were freezing their butts off
I like how Batman isn't an a hole in this episode to Langstrom. He accuses him once, says he'll look into it, then even offers to help if it is Langstrom then he gives langstrom proof it isn't him to help the guy save his marriage. In the words of the flash "let no one tell you you're just a crazed loner."
I love that Walter is the one to do these. Don't get me wrong, I live NC, but it's great Walter is featured with these. He's got a great voice and his genuine love if the episodes, and the show as a whole, really comes through. 👍
Seeing Man-Bat pop up in the Arkham Knight Game was *Surprising* to say the least. Seeing the tape of Langstrom transforming and seeing his wife’s dead body was terrifying but after you cure and lock him up you go back to the lab only to see her not there only to see “Forever my love” was haunting
So that means she came to life transformed, used some of her blood to write that and just left. Sounds weird considering that she'd be acting like an animal by that point
Would have been great if someone who knew croc called him out on it. Something like, “Croc told me plenty of stories of how he almost got the bat! And there was a lot more to it than just a giant rock! Who are you?!”
Hey Walter! I think you did a wonderful job of enumerating the features of this episode which contributed to its overall quality and made it a worthwhile sequel to the first appearance of Man-Bat. The structure of Terror in the Sky was compelling in the sinuous thread of its narrative and the continual process of gathering information and reevaluation that ultimately led to the discovery of the precise truth. This narrative flow permitted Batman to demonstrate his detective faculties and logical reasoning as his theories concerning the identity of the Man-Bat were challenged and reconstructed on the basis of the information he uncovered. Beyond the reveal of Francine’s transformation into the bat-creature, the strength of this episode appears to lie with its thematic overtones on the significance of love above all else. Langstrom, despite his dedication to his research and status as the preeminent source of expertise on genetic engineering in Gotham, has disavowed his creation of Man-Bat and is genuinely upset at the possibility of the inefficacy of the antidote he received. His love for his wife transcends his work, and he attempts to find an honest means of disproving his connection to the recent “Man-Bat” sightings so he can reconcile with her. I agree with the poignancy of the moment Langstrom saves Francine, which signifies the re-solidification of their relationship and the ascension of love triumphing over the shadow of the “Man-Bat”. Francine’s relationship with her father, March, also encapsulates this dichotomy between love and work, as March’s obsession with the creation of a genetically engineered entity to survive ecological extinction endangers his own daughter’s life. It’s only upon this realization compounded with Batman’s insistence that March finally, with silent resignation, burns his own research and proves the dominance and victory of love over the unregulated and unrestrained advancement of scientific research. Good work on this episode as always, Walter! Looking forward to hearing what you have to say about tomorrow’s episode!
It was actually cool and terrifying at the same time, seeing his mouth all foamy and him growling was pretty scary and after he arrived at the batcave fully transformed gave me chills.
Great mention! I don't think this counts, but an elseworld version of Kirk Langstrom appears in the JL: Gods and Monsters movie made by Timm and Burnett with even the same artstyle albeit some redesigns. Not quite Manbat but vampire Batman of all things.
@@solumanblevins5906 she seemed a bit aware of some thing while transformed, like when kirk was falling she picked him up dropped him on the roof of a building, she also seemed sad when she thought he was dead.
Well, she was dumb enough to friggin _suck on her finger_ after cleaning up broken glass containing dubious chemicals with her _bare hands._ As a chemist myself I wouldn't do that even if I knew it was just sterile water. :-P I'm not surprised she couldn't put two and two together.
While the animation in this episode isn't as heavy detailed like "On Leather Wings", it still looks good. Better than "Day of the Samurai". One of the elements I liked on my last re-watch were the dark gray night backgrounds. The night sky in BTAS goes from the iconic red, to either dark blue or gray in different episodes. I do like how TNBA consistently had the iconic red night sky backgrounds for the whole show.
The best in the series is in my opinion is robins reckoning. It had everything, action, emotion, suspense, and detective work. Everything that makes the series amazing
It is certainly a highlight. If we were to make a list of “best overall episodes,” this probably would be on on that top 10. Top five might be a stretch.
The 70's era of Batman might just be the most influential period of The Caped Crusader's history, and I still see that iconic long eared, blue and grey, yellow symboled batsuit on everything.
My only gripe with this episode is that Batman kinda of just leaves the couple at the top of the bridge in the end. Like, how are they supposed to get down? LOL
imagine if later on they end up having a bat-like baby. Affected by both parents exposure to the mutagenic formula, causing their child to inherit the dormant bat physiology.
I missed "Terror of the Sky" while I watched the show as a kid, and I think it looks like a decent followup to "On Leather Wings". One problem I don't think anyone is talking about is the fact that Francine is apparently mindless as She-Bat. It's one thing if that was the same for Kirk, yet in the debut episode, he's sapient enough to rob buildings in order to perfect his formula. It's like the opposite of Lizard's characterization in Spiderman TAS where he started off dumb and savage but evolved with an intelligent lizard brain.
I believe this was the first BTAS episode I'd ever seen, when I was like 4 or 5, and to this day I blame this very episode for my crippling fear of (most) bats XD
It's a shame that this was the last episode to feature Man-Bat, especially when you consider that they could've incorporated a perfected formula where Langstrom retains his intellect while having the strength and flight capabilities of Man-Bat. It would've made him a useful ally to Batman
Man-bat kind of makes a cameo in the batman beyond episode "splicers" in which Terry is infused with vampire bat DNA and transforms into a bat like creature
Yes!!!!! Almost got em review!!!!!! Walter if you dont mention how croc almost got batman ( no spoilers) then I'll be most disappointed. Keep up the awesome review
2:50 Just want to point out this entire episode exists only because of malpractice. Sweep up broken glass first then deal with the spill. You'd think a scientist would know better.
Also, fun fact: The episode was meant to end on a dark note with Kirk being turned back into Man-Bat and fighting his wife until a cave collapsed on both of them. Fox Kids forbad that ending and honestly, I think it was for the better. The Langstroms deserved a happy ending.
I heard there was a kind of easter egg in one of the arkham games that nods to this episode where Batman finds a note from Kurt's wife hinting that she had changed into a bat creature and is now on the loose.
Okay, I actually watched the full episode and, while it's not as entertaining as "On Leather Wings", it is entertaining. There's a good mystery over who the new Man-Bat and the drama between the Langstroms is engaging. It do find it convenient how Francine keeps most of her shirt so that when she turns back to normal, there doesn't have to be any censor shots of her topless body.
Was there no mention of Langstrom or Man-Bat in the Batman Beyond episode with the human animal hybrids and the Chimera Institute? Terry turned into a Man-Bat in that one!
Batman: I see you guys are no longer about to fall off this snowy bridge tower and die so I will just be leaving you on this snowy bridge tower now. Hahaha batjet goes weeeshhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Fun fact, they re-adapted this story in the the Batman Arkham Knight's game. It had a...let's say, Darker tone than the shows did. (and that's saying something)
When I rewatching this series with a friend a lot of the episodes stuck out like they were on some kick of animal splicing dna episodes. This one however was solid. Not Leather Wings good, but still solid. If nothing else we get to see Batman hit with a trash can a few times.
New comment: As far as the souce material, while it does have Francine turning into She-Bat, albeit completely without clothing, and Kirk being suspected of mutating on himself, it's not the forner's first appearance. The end of the first Man-Bat storyline had Francine willingly taking the serum to be with her Man-Bat husband on her wedding day. She's even in her bridal gown when fighting Batman. Honestly, though, it was weird for Kirk and Francine to retain their consciencenesses in the comics to the point where they talk. And the Dark Knight was acting like a dick, calling them monsters and trying to cure them even though they hadn't done anything wrong.
So the last few episodes were like WERECATS, WEREWOLVES... a ninja... and WEREBATS! A morph heavy portion of the the season, i would say. Yeah, moving on to „ It was a big rock” was a good idea.
So... did Batman actually give them a ride home, or did he just leave them there on top of a snow-covered bridge? (Doesn't help that she's barefoot in the snow either, or that her shirt's all torn up.)
Fun fact: This isn't Kirk's last appearance in the DCAU. He's later seen in an issue of Batman: Gotham Adventures being forced to steal other company's chemical formulas for a pharmeceutical executive in exchange for his wife's life. With an overemphasis on splash pages and Man-Bat suddenly talking, it's not great. We don't even see Francine, so the threat means nothing.

Francine Langstrom was "the She-Bat" longer in the comics and was a pivotal plot point when Man-Bat got his own series in 1975. It lasted two issues!
She even looked like a "she" in the comics
And became a villain when the new 52 came to town.
