Excellent jig Jay, simple and easy... the way I like it. I would suggest drawing a center line BEFORE you drill the router bit hole and extend it up perpendicular to the guides up to the base edges. This would make a precise reference for positioning the jig, just making a center line in the piece you are making the mortise and then align both lines.....

Thanks for the simple solution here Jay. You saved me $250+ bucks with this. I was about to buy a brand-new plunge router with guide, but repurposed an old Skil router I had collecting dust using these plans. I made a slight modification and added 1/2 acrylic so that I could see better. It's not as strong as plywood but it's working well enough. Thanks again! Still love the router table with simple lift.

Great, that's exactly the video I was hoping to find when I searched for an edge-guide router jig! I don't even need to look elsewhere as this is all I need to successfully build this jig 😀 Thank you for taking the time to film, edit and post this video, and know that a 42-year-old, female viewer all the way across the pond in England will be using this when routing the rails for her two new garage doors!

Another winner Jay. You could add a stop block on each side if needed as well.

Thank you Jay! Just made this and it makes breadboard mortises so much easier and safer than the edge guide I was using. To center it on your workpiece I’m finding it stupid simple if I know my mortise is 3/8” off the edge to just set the router down, use a 3/8” gauge block between the upspiral bit and fence then tighten that side down. Then just have to flip it over and butt up the other fence to the workpiece. Again awesome jig love your channel!

One suggestion, after the initial depth of the plunge cut is complete, flip the whole thing around without loosening the wing nuts, and repeat the plunge cut to make sure the finished mortise is centered.

Cut a short longitudinal slot in h thread of the bolt so that, when you screw it into the undersized hole, it cuts a thread like a very crude tap.

Just built mine and tested it on an unsurfaced 2x4. It works well but you have to take caution when using two fences on non-uniformly thick pieces. The piece will wedge against the fence and those wing nuts will come loose if you try to force it as I did.
I also made the mistake of routing right to left so the router easily ran off the side of the piece. No damage was done.

  • @IH1940HAY

You could put a mark on each side of the jig in line with the center of the bit, this could be used to aid in lining up to the center of the bit, possibly more accurate than eyeballing the bit in the work.

Another option for the base instead of plywood is hardboard. That's what I used on mine, and it works great. And tends to be rather "slick" so it slides really easily. A little paste wax on the oak runners helps also.

Hello Jay, thought you would have squared it up before tightening down.
It needs some way of setting it up to track parallel to your piece of wood.
The 4 bolt setup can make it travel on an angle.

Neat alternate use for this jig would be as a dado spacer if you're cutting a bunch of dados in a piece of plywood for shelves. Just make the bottom edge guide the width of the dado and set it to the spacing.

Hey Jay, It looks like your shop is in a new space. I thought I saw a garage door in the background. I am about to convert my garage into a shop (or half of it anyway) and I would be interested (as I am sure a lot of other people are) as to how yours is set up. Can you give us a 360 degree tour of the place so we can see where you have everything located and how much room you have between tools and how they are organized?
