    I’ve been doing this every year for my seedlings! Glad to see others are doing the same thing.

      As an extra step, I pour in boiling hot water to kill any insect eggs.

    I come back a few times a year to watch this and still haven't tried!! You make it look so easy. I need to find where to source these different materials. That's what holds me back. Thanks for sharing this!

    I love your DIY soil sifter! I need to make one of those soon. Planning to use a soil block maker for the first time this month! Glad I saw this before I get started. 😊

    Great video. I'm glad you mentioned mask ....I was thinking that while watching your video....mask for healthly lungs your whole life when working with such dusty ingredients. :) I am curious how is it that the soil blocks do not fall apart when you water? Do you have to mist them?

  • @radrainfall9425
    @radrainfall9425 3 роки тому +3

    Just a tip, you should wear a dust mask while mixing peat moss and also using perlite/vermiculite
    I've read that the particles from that can hurt you over time

      Thanks! Yes, you are right. I mentioned that I should have done this in the end of the video...plus eye protection! It is something I will definitely do in the future.☺️ The dust is awful!

    What part of the U.S. do you live? Here in Vermont where the growing season is very short I would need to use a green house to be able to grow more food for my family. Love what you are doing. My family also wants to have a homestead and be as much off grid and self sufficient as we can be❤

    This is awesome! I will try this next year. This year was my first time soil blocking and I used vermiculite instead of perlite and it was too dense. Also do you still use the 4 inch soil block that was in your first year video? I am curious if it is worth buying.

    Which soil blocker maker do you have? I have been doing some research, but reviews seem to be mixed. And I’m not sure what to get.

    When you add homemade compost and peat to this, you don't find that you get flies, fungus gnats and whatever else in your seedling starts in your house?

    Looks like a good potting mix; seems a bit heavy on pearlite for seed starting.

    I heard that you weren't supposed to use compost for seed starting is this different because you're not using pure compost?

    Hi Becky! I was wondering about the green sand you use, i know you say its optional, but I bought some, and it it isn't as fine as yours appears on the video... it almost looks like green perlite! :o))) Would you still use it? Not sure if I should just send it back or not? I would greatly appreciate your opinion! Thank you in advance! Oh! And if theres a place you'd suggest buying it from, would you please link to it?

    • @TheSeasonalHomestead
      @TheSeasonalHomestead  2 роки тому

      Interesting! I’ve used more coarse green sand too, it looked like sand size particles though. If it’s as big as perlite then that may be too big for seed starting… maybe it could be blended in a blender?🤪 The place I bought it from no longer has it in stock, I bought the brand “Super Greensand” Micronized

      @@TheSeasonalHomestead I thought about grinding it down as well, but my husband says it won't work, that it would just get "gummed up". (He's a chemical engineer {as well as other kinds}, so I figured his advice is sound. :o)
      Do you have a suggestion for substitution, by chance? I truly appreciate your time and advice! Thank you for your kindness too!

    @TheSeasonalHomestead have you ever had your soil blocks freeze in your high tunnel?

    • @TheSeasonalHomestead
      @TheSeasonalHomestead  8 місяців тому

      I take them inside if temperatures are predicted to be below 25. For tender crops like tomatoes if it gets below 32 I bring them in just in case. I do cover them with row cover at night and that helps a ton! So to answer your question, no I’ve never had them freeze.

    I know you will think I’m picking on you but please stop using peat moss. It destroys environments that it is taken from plus our whole environment. There are many other products available now. Coir being one of the best. I have a lot of respect for your family and know you will do the right thing for your childrens environment.
