LOVE it! As a noob, the truck as WAY more capability than I do, and I plan on easing into the offroading thing. Considering that Chevy priced this into Ranger Raptor territory without an engine upgrade (95hp extra), I didn't feel the cost was worth it especially considering you're now stuck with the spare tire taking up space in the bed. I figure I'll put 34's (285/75/17 - OEM width) on the OEM rims and it should work without a lift and fit under the bed. Do that, and a skidplates for the diff and fuel tank, and I've got good upgrades to almost Bison level and saving a lot of $$. I don't need the jounce dampers. If they had put that inline-6 turbodiesel in the Bison stock or as a further upgrade for that money, I would have considered it. As is, no. I think the reason the last ZR2 had trouble on that hill was the condition of the dirt, no traction, just digging trenches, even fully locked up.

For desert running applications, the Ranger Raptor is better. However, for rock crawling, the ZR2 Bison is superior due to its improved approach angle, rock rails, and 35-inch tires. If the Ranger Raptor were also equipped with 35-inch tires, this comparison could change.
Listening to the Raptor engineer, they went with the smaller tire for wheel travel. It wasn't designed to be a rock crawler just a high speed desert runner. My guess with high speed you don't want a CG thats too high either, otherwise you're likely to flip it.
They also had a fuel cell toward the back of that Raptor, which I hear is incredibly heavy. The fuel cell sits toward the back too, so I think that allowed them to balance the weight distribution so they could run 35s, maybe?

I love this channel. Great looking truck great video. I too question the reliability of Chevy compared to Toyota but then again Toyota has also moved to a completely different platform altogether, so the jury is still out on where that’s gonna end up kind of a weird situation that we is consumers are in right now across the board.
Considering what happened with the new Tacoma when The Fast Lane Truck took it offroading in snow (broken front 4WD) and the terrible reliability of the new Tundra, the 4th gen Taco is going to have to do a lot to prove it's reliable.
Love your channel and the videos. I just don’t know how these manufacturers are pricing their vehicles so high…they are definitely not worth the price IMHO. I have a 2020 TRD OR and the prices of the new Taco’s are insane too. The manufacturers are forgetting who their original market is…I would never buy a new full size or mid-size truck at today’s prices. Keep up the good work on the videos!
So all this time I thought GM is screwing up something, with the 4low glitching and whatnot, and it's because someone is 2 pedaling 🙄...who the hell does that?...why not just go 3 pedaling with a stick?
I had an old 2006 avalanche z71, such a great truck. It's really awesome to see all the design cues the Colorado (and now the new silverado) has taken from its predecessor. Miss that thing, other than the gas mileage lol.
The 3.6 kinda sucked for truck use. The 4.3 would have been better, but the government's emissions regulations are forcing everyone to use turbo 4-bangers.
The Bronco didn't do that lol. The original Raptor did. The ZR2 was brought back in 2017 and began competing in racing series like Best in the Desert way back in 2017. The Bronco is actually late to the game.
This guy is long winded he talks way too much and his driving abilities are limited but I will say his camera work is great, all the different angles ect is all terrific.
Terrain mode is for ONE-pedal driving. You were driving the previous zr2 incorrectly. It is not an engineering issue. You can still two-pedal drive it if you choose not to use terrain mode.
No you can 2-pedal so long as you aren't applying more than 50% throttle while applying any brake. He was literally goosing the throttle while his foot was on the brake, which was an old timer trick for trucks that didn't have a locking rear differential. It was completely stupid to do with a modern truck with front and rear lockers and a 2-speed transfer case. It's not even about control, which was his excuse. If you're applying more than half throttle, there is zero reason to be pushing on the brake at that point. It was stupid showboating that ruined multiple videos and didn't show the audience what the TRUCK was capable of. He wanted to show off his 2 pedal technique instead.
Such a nice looking truck, too bad Chevy can't build reliable mid sized trucks to save their life. Id literally buy any other mid sized truck over this. My 2022 Colorado Z71 lasted 1 year and 5 months.
My 2018 ZR2 had 107,000 Mi on it when I traded it in for a 23 year to only issues on that truck was tranny fluid replacement and about 6,000 MI not a single problem other than that
Yeah let’s not mention reliability with ford or Toyota these days. I’m a ford guy and waited for the ranger raptor but after the constant recalls on broncos I decided to buy the ZR2 instead. And Toyota has an all new drivetrain with hybrid system. So let’s not use 2nd gen and earlier Toyota reliability for a sales pitch or argument on the new truck. Let’s face it all these manufacturers have gotten cheap. Not just Toyota and ford. But bang for buck I’m happy I chose the ZR2. I’m also a Toyota fan. I have owned 5 tacomas 3 2nd gen’s and 2 3rd gen’s. And I can tell you the 3rd gen motor and transmission is absolute garbage. Should have stuck with the 4 liter motor.
LOL worried about reliability, leans towards Ford or the completely unproven Taco while the Tundra is being recalled for massive engine failures and the 3rd gen Taco was rated least reliable midsize truck by consumer reports for like 4 years in a row. That cheap rear axle Toyota started using in 2016 is a glaring issue right off the rip. Mine and about half of the guys on TW had rear diff howling that was so loud the radio couldn't hide it on the highway. They switched to Thai made Hino axles and the ring and pinion are poor quality. Might as well take the Tacoma straight from the dealer's lot to the shop to have a better ring and pinion installed. Might help a bit. And in the wake of the V35A issues, I don't have any more faith in Toyota's engine and transmission as I do the other brands. 2nd gen Tacoma was peak reliability.
Absolutely love this exact model and colour! But the engine is quite disappointing and the reason why I won’t peruse it. If it were a v6 like before, then ide have one ordered months ago
The motor is not disappointing. For what it was built for it’s great. The torque is amazing crawling around in the hills. You want a performance truck that does quarter mile stuff buy a raptor r or trx. Everyone thinks these motors are horrible. Did you ever own and drive an early ford ranger, s10, or Tacoma with a 4 banger or gutless v6? They have come a long ways. What is it you want out of a midsize truck power and torque wise?
@@dusty0924 The main issue I have with it is how reliable it’ll be and how long it’ll last before failing. It’s impressive the power and torque they got out of this new 4 cyl, but now it’s gonna be working twice as hard than a v6 or v8 would every day. I’m fine with the power and torque it produces, I just don’t like the fact it’s smaller and it’ll run hotter cause it’s lacking 2 pistons that would really help it out for simple tasks. What I want out of a midsize truck is exactly what the zr2 bison has, but with the engine power and reliability out of say the ranger raptor for example
@@jeffrd turbos have made these new smaller engines so efficient they really aren’t working that hard. I understand what you’re saying 100% and would agree with you 10yrs ago. But these new motors are pretty reliable for their size and power output thanks to turbos. The ranger raptor is also an amazing truck with its own share of issues but let’s be real. All these new vehicles no matter manufacturer are going to have issues. And we can thank the EPA for that. But we have gotten so spoiled and I think the hunt for more power is out of control. People want insane numbers and then complain about reliability lol. For a midsize truck I think the ZR2 actually runs really good and mine is on 35s already. Would I love another 100hp and torque? Of course. But for what the truck is I definitely can’t complain myself.
@@jeffrd at the end of the day there will always be something faster or better. Buy a new raptor r and some guy pulls up with one that’s turned up making 1k hp. Then you’re chasing that. I have been there and done that with cars. It’s a never ending addiction. But I’m not in a place financially that I need a 150k raptor. So buy a ZR2 and build a mustang or something to go fast 😂🤷🏼♂️
@@dusty0924 That’s very true. I guess for those who wanna go nuts with this, they could beef up the turbos, intercooler, cooling system, oil pump, fuel pump, ecm, tunes, and other stuff to the point they can get +100hp or more out of it. But then again, that’s adding more work for this little engine too. I’ll have to wait for someone else to do it first before really nagging on it. And yes, engines have definitely come a long way since 10 years ago. Both in good and bad ways, but that goes for a lot of things. I guess the other thing is the sound from the 4 cyl. Stock it sounds a bit like my mower, haha. However I’ve seen some guys straight pipe it from the headers all the way down to the exhaust tip and man it makes it so much louder. It’ll never sound like a v8 or even a v6, but at least with mods it can sound a lot better and more aggressive than it comes stock. Only time will tell where this engine will go, and thanks to UA-cam, we can watch and research from others doing stuff with it before we do it ourselves
If you hate g80 auto lockers chevy wants you to spend 60 grand for them to install a switch🤣. Seriously why do they not copy ford where diff locks are optional across the board?
Yeah and they should use standard parts. Can't say what this third gen is like, but the second gen zr2 axles are special Dana m220s for GM only, which are slightly different from the m220 in the jeeps. Parts are therefore currently almost impossible to come by, aftermarket options are slim.
Worst problem this truck has is its a GM product. Its cool as hell looking, very well equiped and quite capable. And they price is decent too for the section. But as an EVERY BRAND fanboy, chevy for the past 15 years has been steadily inching downward in quality. Fact. No chevy fanboy can prove me wrong. Not saying other brands arent following suit as well, but just because everything else smells of shit, doesnt mean a piece of shit isnt a piece of shit.
I agree with you that their quality is going down. It’s very evident in the new LT series v8 engines and their cylinder deactivation. You’re also seeing trucks as new as 2018 rot really quickly. But, I’ve seen a lot of independent car people tear this engine down. Apparently it’s pretty solid. I am worried about the screens and electronics in it
Because you say it's a fact, it's therefore a fact? Based on what data? I don't favor one company over another, I'm not a Chevy fanboy per say. But your statement is stupid. If you want say in your opinion, fine. But don't be so self righteous.
Well, if you do any amount of research past "passive consumer" levels. Its not self righteousness. Its trend analasys. Just about every brand is nosing down, but none have been so pronounced as GM unforthnatelly. And just stating American, quickly followed by anything in stellantis group, and then ford. Jap brands are fairing SLIGHTLY better but have skyrocketed to unacceptible pricing, such as toyota. Do some very BASIC research, you will find the data backs up my claims. It is zero bias. I couldnt give a fuck less if chevy was good right now or not, I dont have ang stocks in the company, nor do I own a colorado anymore. But hey, if my pointing out your hero truck isnt a god upsets you..... fine. I wont lose sleep over it.
You must not pay any attention to the ridiculous problems ford has had with the bronco platform which it shares with the ranger. Take a trip to your nearest ford dealer if you haven’t and take a gander under the hood of that ranger and tell me how amazing it is. Or check out the ridiculous amounts of recalls ford has had on them 😂
Chevy tried realy hard to give it the looks to compensate for the 4 banger under the hood. Got the looks but missing the balls. The Ranger Rapture got big balls.

I'm curious how the leaf springs compare to say the ranger raptor rear suspension? I can't find any good comparison reviews
This truck isn't made for guys like this.
So all this time I thought GM is screwing up something, with the 4low glitching and whatnot, and it's because someone is 2 pedaling 🙄...who the hell does that?...why not just go 3 pedaling with a stick?
The 4wd only has problems if not used correctly, it's all driver error
@@bradsmith130 How is pressing two pedals a fucking driver error? Why the fuck is it leaving 4 low because of something so fucking minor?
I had an old 2006 avalanche z71, such a great truck. It's really awesome to see all the design cues the Colorado (and now the new silverado) has taken from its predecessor. Miss that thing, other than the gas mileage lol.
It would be perfect off road truck if it still has 3.6 N/A engine. Great off road review. Greetings
The 3.6 kinda sucked for truck use. The 4.3 would have been better, but the government's emissions regulations are forcing everyone to use turbo 4-bangers.
Was the rear diff locked? Noticed at 17:48, one rear wheel was spinning while the other wasn't. Nice looking truck though.
i'd like to see high clearance front and rear bumpers on this. and we asked for lockers, not "modes."
How was the MPG on the trails
In my opinion, you didn’t gave enough credit to this truck. To me, it performed exceptionally specially comparing it to the 2door. rubicon
You lost every ounce of credibility when you said you "2 pedal" an automatic vehicle; let alone ANY vehicle...
😂
Very nice work with the video, but i would take a ranger raptor, save 7k plus 2 more cylinders.
@17:46 it looks like the rear locker is not engaged but it was shown @15:51 that it had been turned on. Was it on or off at that point?
This guy constantly sabotages GM products. Probably intentional.
@@terrencejones9817 I am new to the channel so I cannot speak to that. Too bad if so.
@@BowTied69yeah he always seems to do this with any gm vehicles
@@HiddenOne22 If true, that's sad.
Run the Frontier pro 4x for reference on a vehicle that is $20+k less
So with regards to the rear locker, does this mean chevy is no longer using the Eaton Locker (G80) for automatic rear locking differential?
G80 is still used in the Trail Boss Colorado and Silverado. E-lockers for the ZR2 Colorado and Silverado.
The AT4 canyon is also using that G80. It works okay. Definitely better than no locker once you figure out how to use it 👌🏼
Sticker Shock !!!! What The ....
Big problem with modern vehicles is you can't see out of them.
Seems like the Bronco made everyone go hard on off-roading. I didn't have to get a Bronco, but all these options weren't out at the time.
The Bronco didn't do that lol. The original Raptor did. The ZR2 was brought back in 2017 and began competing in racing series like Best in the Desert way back in 2017. The Bronco is actually late to the game.
Way better than what Ford, Toyota and Nissan has put out for midsize trucks.
This guy is way too timid in attacking the hill. SMH Use the darn lockers both of them SMH
he likes to hear him self talk . shut up and drive . he has no clue how to off road . cut the time down by 50% please .
This guy is long winded he talks way too much and his driving abilities are limited but I will say his camera work is great, all the different angles ect is all terrific.
As much as I like this truck, the engine does not convince me for that price ! Drop a v6 with twin turbos dammit !
They should have made the tire rack fold down...
Terrain mode is for ONE-pedal driving. You were driving the previous zr2 incorrectly. It is not an engineering issue. You can still two-pedal drive it if you choose not to use terrain mode.
Both me and Ezra were 2 peddle driving outside of terrain mode.
@@drivingsports You were clearly in terrain mode in both your previous zr2 videos. Whatever’s fair.
My 2015 canyon has 130k miles and has only had A/C replaced and water pump for radiator. Other than that it doesn’t see a shop for repairs.
My 2018 ZR2 had 107,000 Mi on it when I traded it in for a 23 year to only issues on that truck was tranny fluid replacement and about 6,000 MI not a single problem other than that
Only truck that can lock diff in 2wd.
Not true. Ranger can too.
Come on man, do this with the 24’ Ranger fx4!!
Price tag is ridiculous, especially for a 4 cylinder.
Gladiator laughing at all these comments 😂
All the ones piled up on lots? 😅
Imagine spending $70,000 on the vehicle that doesn’t let you press two pedals at the same time
Don’t be dumb it lets you unless you use terrain mode. Just
I would be worried about reliability, leaning towards either a Raptor or Taco TRD Pro.
Want a taco too but seeing the new tundra issues doesn't give me confidence :(
Ford reliable? 😂
the taco has been in the shop with issues also. no difference. your thinking of the old days when taco's were reliable and built in Japan .
65K for a 4 banger! 🤯 What a waste of a beautiful truck.
you could have made that hill climb but I understand it's not your truck :)
17:28 That's what she said
Those are big tires for a weak independent front suspension…just ask the Bronco.
I took it for a test drive the tires rub
I've worked mine pretty hard and never rubbed at all. Must've been one heck of a test drive. 🤔
bs
17:27 you’re welcome
What a shame to have that unsightly tire in the back. Thats dumb. Doesnt that block your rear view as well?
Doesn’t cost 60k you can get into a base ZR2 for 48 to 49k. You don’t need the bison package for lockers.
The ¥4 turbo is the looser for me. that and rear seat leg room.o Like e studying else.
I really like that course you guys built.
Your opinion don’t mean much at the end of the day
All brands have issues
You’re wrong. Fact. Prove me wrong. There, I can do it too.
As a Chevy guy, I would prefer the new Ranger Raptor!
🤔
You must not pay any attention to the ridiculous problems ford has had with the bronco platform which it shares with the ranger. Take a trip to your nearest ford dealer if you haven’t and take a gander under the hood of that ranger and tell me how amazing it is. Or check out the ridiculous amounts of recalls ford has had on them 😂
@@dusty0924 You bring up a good point. Ford quality scares me.
Yeah, that 4wd automatically disengaging was enough to turn me off completely. Sucks too, I think the same guys who designed the zr2 designed my H3T
Chevy tried realy hard to give it the looks to compensate for the 4 banger under the hood. Got the looks but missing the balls. The Ranger Rapture got big balls.
I think id still take the raptor.
