    Awesome video as always! I work for a calf backgrounding ranch and do a little bit on my own here in VA. I'm just getting started with my operation, but I'm buying and selling 2 herds per year right now. I buy them at around 300 lbs and take them up to around 600 lbs. I sell right before the spring and fall grazing seasons. That's worked out pretty well for me. Glad to hear y'all did well on your stockers this year. That advice about not cutting corners financially is something more people need to hear. The ranch I work at buys up some pretty sickly looking cattle, but they get them back in good condition and generally turn a profit on them. But the ranch buys these sale barn calves at a discount because the previous owners tried to cut corners. Anyways, sorry for the long comment. Keep up the great work with the YT channel and the farm. Loving the content. - Everett

      Thanks for watching! Always good to hear from other cattlemen, especially those here in the eastern U.S.

    Glad you made a good profit. You're ready to expand! 😀 If you can find the land. That's the problem in my area.

      Yeah, with me also being a part-timer, our operation is about as big as I can manage. However, I would consider expansion if it involved a neighboring property!

    Love the videos not one of them I miss. If you could only choose one, would you a choose cow-calf or stocker operation? Why would you choose that one?

    • @HurricaneCreekFarms
      @HurricaneCreekFarms  2 роки тому +1

      Tough question! I’d probably say cow-calf because seeing that new life that God provides is the best part of what we do. I also enjoy getting to know some of the cows for years at a time.

    What sale do y’all go thru ? Dickson seems to be pretty popular for folks around here , we have a very close sell barn but cattle doesn’t bring as much there as they do at Dickson

    • @HurricaneCreekFarms
      @HurricaneCreekFarms  2 роки тому

      Yeah, they have a special load lot feeder cattle sale in Dickson every fall that we’ve been really happy with.

    Bobby Lee will yall increase your stocker herd next year and if so by how many head. Also how large would you ever allow your herd to get?

    • @HurricaneCreekFarms
      @HurricaneCreekFarms  2 роки тому +1

      We won’t. We are limited primarily by the amount of pasture we have. I’d consider going bigger if we had more pasture, but that’d be tricky if it didn’t adjoin our current pastures or wasn’t very close by. With it being my side hustle, I’m in about as deep as I can stand in terms of time commitment right now.

    Appreciate the video, these are my favorites. Did you implant these stockers and if so are they categorized different from cattle that aren't implanted? With the craze of non GMO, Antibiotics etc. I am just wandering if there are any notable differences when marketing.

    • @HurricaneCreekFarms
      @HurricaneCreekFarms  2 роки тому

      No. Implanting didn’t affect them. If they were all home raised (so we could guarantee they never had been previously implanted), we could’ve thought about marketing in that manner. More power to folks that get a premium that way, but anyone avoiding beef that was treated with hormones is ignoring the facts/science proving that there’s no difference in the beef (vs hormone free). I’m a believer in using a product that’s proven safe and makes the cattle more efficient

    Where do u sell uer cattle and how do u get a truck to come and pick them up

    • @HurricaneCreekFarms
      @HurricaneCreekFarms  2 роки тому +1

      We sold these in Dickson, TN. For this sale, we coordinated with the auction barn and they sent a truck. Most sale barns can send a truck or put you in touch with someone who can haul whether you’re talking about a pot load or just a gooseneck to haul a few.

      @@HurricaneCreekFarms I am a small-time guy in Camden trying to get to your level do you have to call the barn and they come look at your cattle or just call for the truck and run them through the ring

    • @HurricaneCreekFarms
      @HurricaneCreekFarms  2 роки тому +1

      @@joeyjennette9408 just called the truck and they ran them thru. They did have a special load lot sale. All preconditioned steers sold in truckload lots. You’ll see an occasional full truckload sell through just the regular weekly sales and they usually bring a similar premium

      No snails for us, but I did try escargot in Vegas a couple of years ago. Not sure what the county of origin was, but they were good!
