    I think another problem would be that the environment 65 million years ago was dramatically different. Even if we could clone a dino it would probably suffer from lack of sufficient oxygen.

    @Tekrothebountyhunter 8 років тому +57

    Personally, I believe it is our responsibility as an advanced species to bring back the animals we rendered extinct in the past due to poor choices, such as the thylacine, which we killed off due to deliberate overhunting. It would be beneficial to the environment and, in many ways, to ourselves. Animals such as mammoths and dinosaurs probably should be left extinct, as they would likely not survive in the modern environment of the world and have negative effects on the environment. However, let's face it: if we were to bring back extinct animals, chances are the corporations that funded the process would care more about the P.R. than they would about the quality of life for the species.

    • @daisychains6866
      @daisychains6866 8 років тому +6

      I believe it is our responsibility not to kill the individual animals in the first place. Why are people only worried about species going extinct but not about the individual lifes that were taken? If someone murders a bunch of people and justifies it by saying "Well, I let some members of their families alive so their genetic material is not endangered" it does not make him morally superior somehow, does it?

    • @DakkogiRauru23
      @DakkogiRauru23 7 років тому +8

      Daisy Chains Humans are omnivores, just as lions are predators. Biologically, we acquire nutrients from animals that plants cannot replace. It is our responsibility to address this need for our natural diet, which includes both meat and plants.
      Also, why do you not consider the plants as life taken for food?

    • @JaelinBezel
      @JaelinBezel 7 років тому +1

      Where would they live? With deforestation running rampant and species going extinct by the day, unless you're willing to bunk with them I say they're better off where they are. And it's not like it'd be an apology to them since they aren't being brought back from the dead, just being artificially recreated: entirely new individuals, tabula rasa baby that don't know shit yet.
      We still aren't even that good at it and if you fuck up just one gene it dies (probably quite painfully at that). And most of the public won't have the conscious to differentiate between species that went extinct due to natural selection taking its course and those that went extinct because of our interference and see reviving them (or at least the cute ones) as the "obviously" moral thing to do regardless and completely spitting on evolution.

    At some point I can imagine having technology that, upon scanning of rock material where DNA was present, can find the elements that it eventually became and rewind the clock digitally to recreate what combination was there. There you get your lego bricks, now you just put them together....still, you would need some way to give birth to the little guys but if we really, honestly want to make Jurassic Park happen humans would try and figure it out as best they could....we're weird like that...At some point in the future I can see the possibility of DNA recombinate machines or machines that can manufacture a strand of DNA from a given strand blueprint...would be an interesting time, but also a kinda scary one...

    the epigentics is one of the biggest issues if you want viable animals, you may have the complete genome but if specific pieces aren't turned off and others on you get malformed babys, that's why Dolly the sheep was very lucky in regards to that seeing they didn't use the genome of egg and spermcells but somatic cells whose epigenetics are different

    With the advances in genetic sequencing, we might be able to assemble complete dino DNA if we have enough samples. IE this part is broken in that sample, but that part is broken in that sample. With enough intact pieces and a supercomputer, we might be able to assemble the puzzle completely. Then we are left with synthesizing the DNA, which can be done today, although not with very complex strands.
    After that its a matter of developing the 'cloning vat' to incubate the new life form and track its growth. The largest problem with this concept would likely be a lack of genetic diversity and then 'educating' an animal to act like it should.

    Great B.S., Kyle! Er, that somehow doesn't come out right in acronym format, so, Great Because Science, Kyle.
    Speaking of bigger things, like dinosaurs, why were Dino's so big back then, and why is life smaller?
    Come to think of it, why are humans getting bigger?
    No doubt, you'll give us a glimpse into Indominatus Rex soon.
    But I say go big or go home!
    Let's turn back the clock to Godzilla (2014) who was 350 feet tall, as I recall. Is there a limit to how big a creature can get, and if so why?
    Could Godzilla and other Kaiju feed on radiation?
    And let's talk about that incredible case of radio-active halitosis - Godzilla's atomic breath!
    Go big, or go home!
    I hope you'll give us a peek at super-predators in some upcoming Because Sciences.

      It’s so strange to me how little known this fact is, red blood cells have been discovered in Rex bones as early as the 90s, yet the information just doesn’t seem to spread.
      I’ve heard second hand an amusing anecdote about a palaeontologist at a dig in Alaska. Having excavated a bone from the permafrost he put it on a work table, intending to make a plaster cast after lunch. Upon returning, the bone had thawed, and the entire room smelled as he said “like a fresh steak.” The bone marrow was still soft after all those years under the ice!

    The other method that could work, and in fact has already been done, is de-evolution. Basically, we breed animals for traits they used to commonly hold until we return to the olden times. We have done this with cows, recreating aurochs or at least, coming really really close. Im honestly unsure of just how far back we could go along the evolutionary path but its a start. Maybe if we could force mutations we could find ones close to previous versions of the original animal and keep going that way.

    De-extinction would definitely be a useful tool for restoring lost biodiversity. However, since this field is clearly still in the planning stages, it would require extensive research on which recently extinct species are both very important to the global biome and still able to survive and reproduce under current global conditions.

    (how we think it works as far as the brain is concerned, what percentage of lefties, vs righties vs ambidextrous, genetic factors vs environmental, any recent studies, etc.)
    Thanks!!

    Hey, Elephants are not Ancestors of the Mammoths, they're not even technically decedents (the word I assume you were looking for) they're technically the closest living relative. I'm sure this has been posted before but, hey, I'm late to the show.

    except we've found soft tissue preserved in dinosaur fossils (specifically a T. rex), and if we find one that was preserved under the right conditions we might even be able to extract a couple copies of DNA. Then we use DNA Polymerase to make a bunch of copies until it's readable and then we read it.

    something I've never thought about pertaining to the subject. is that we know elephants are self-aware and they probably wouldn't morning stillborn just as the human would I mean I'm not certain but I'm going to assume so and that's a pretty safe assumption. they wouldn't be able to consent and as risky as this is they should be able to otherwise it's not right.

    Kyle please answer this question!!! I gotta know! So u mentioned the upper limit on being able to De-extinct animals because of the half life of DNA. But you didn't say exactly how long that limit was. So how long is it? Please tell me its at east a few minion years. Thanks dude

    video suggestion...
    one of my favourite comic characters is Judge Dredd, aka The Law, and he ages in real time, so at the moment he is (biologically) in his 70's in the comics, yet he is kept on the streets by taking drugs and receiving treatment that keep him active, so would something like that be possible in real lfie?

      it should be as not only have they more recently went extinct but they should also be able to go through the gestation process faster although how marsupials like the thylacine grow up could be a problem

    I guess the real question to ask on species to species basis, when it comes to de-extinction, would be how they became extinct. A lot changed in the world between Mammoth extinction (which I do understand is due to ancient humans) and now. A real shame would be to bring something back only to find that the world doesn't really have a place for them anymore. Can we teach a mammoth how to be a mammoth and not an elephant? Can ensure a their diet in the wild, and if both of those questions are resolved do we need to look at bringing back the Smilodon's so that northern asia isn't overrun by an out of control Mammoth population.
    I'm really into the idea of De-extinction but honestly I can't see it being used practically to restart a species that hasn't livid in hundreds of years. We can study them we can put them in zoo's but nature doesn't seem to foster the idea of second chances for species. But this can go a long way to save a friends who are almost out the door, I'm lookin at you tigers, SCIENCE TO THE RESCUE!!!

    When it comes to de-extinction I think we should only use it to bring back animals that have become extinct due to humans. Other animals may not be able to live in the conditions that the Earth is now currently in. Also where would we release these animals? There is so many questions that would need to be asked and answered, I'm sure the people behind all this have established that though.
