I asked Elliot Friedman this and didn't get an answer. How typical is it for a player to be claimed off waivers at this time of year? Is there an unspoken agreement to not do so?
My opinion, because that's all I can speak on, is that most GM's aren't exactly watching the waiver wire to see if there is someone who will help the team, because if they could help an NHL team they probably wouldn't be on waivers. At this point in the year anyways. Having said that, I don't think a GM is doing their job very well if they don't keep an eye on it and grab a player who they think they could fill a spot for someone who got injured in pre-season, or a good young talent who just needs some time to make a great team but could fit immediately on a weaker team.
This is one of the most common times of year for waiver claims, as players that weren't previously eligible for waivers go through the process for the first time.
Also thank you for this video as I was confused about who was waiver eligible

Happens every year...

If a waived player gets claimed by another team, does the player get a say in staying with the original team?
Nope! If you're claimed, you're required to report to your new team.
@@ryanpikeFN ahh right on, thank you for the response.
