    Excellent, clear video that an amateur DIYer can follow. Bought a new fan the other day and reading the manual confused me, as did google searches which tend to have a lot of sparky lingo. I now feel totally confident that I can fit this fan! Thanks!

    I like this nicely explained video. But you should also have a fuse per regulations if you extractor fan is in zone 1 or 2...you are not showing any fuse box

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 3 роки тому +1

      It's on the lighting circuit which is connected to a 6amp MCB on the consumer unit and RCD protected. You only need to 'add' a fuse if downgrading the power from another higher rated circuit like a fused spur from a ring main. I installed a double poled isolation switch which allows you to fully isolate the power whilst carrying out maintenance. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

    Instead of using coloured tape, it's easier to use 3mm coloured sleeving, which you can buy by the metre of eBay for pennies, rather than full 50m-100m rolls. Snip an inch off, and slide it over. Tape comes off, and is fiddly to fit. Good clear video.

    Hi really excellent video thanks ...if the fan is untimed with only two terminals how do you wire it when you have the three wires coming in .

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 7 років тому

      Hi David, depends what the wires are. If you have a live (permanent live), a neutral and an earth then connect the live to the Live (L) terminal, neutral to the (N) terminal and terminate the earth in a connector block. If it's a switched/temporary live, a permanent live, and a neutral wire , then you could connect the neutral to the neutral terminal (N), and the permanent live to the live terminal (L). Terminate the switched live wire into a connector block to safely isolate it. I'm assuming you just have a separate on off switch for the fan? Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

Now I want to fit downlights and an extractor fan on an independent switch in my garage, but there’s no ceiling rose. There’s just a length of 2 core and earth that’s connected to a fluorescent light That’s on a switch. Could I disconnect the fluorescent light and connect the 2 core and earth to a few wago connectors to make a ceiling rose so to speak, and then connect the fan and downlights from that? I hope that makes sense any help would be much appreciated😊

    Hi.
    I followed this guide today and managed to get everything wired up and working, though for some reason my fan won't work independently of the light?
    I've wired everything as per your video, and the light switch turns the lights on, though the fan switch does nothing UNLESS the light switch is turned on.
    When I turn the fan switch off the fan keeps running as per the timer settings, though when I turn the light switch off it turns the fan and light off together 😕
    Regards, Mike.

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE

      The isolation switch is for maintenance. You can isolate the power to the switch to work on it whilst the power to the lighting is still on. Same as if you used a fused switch for the fan from a ring (socket) circuit. Hope that makes sense.

    Hi pouse, top vids, I have a heck of a lot to learn. We have fitted an extra fan in bathroom it runs with shared lightswitch. It’s supposed to stay on for 30mins after you switch light off but doesn’t. Any idea why? We have turned the dial/screw to max (30mins) but it won’t stay on. Thanks in advance :)

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 6 років тому +1

      If you've turned the screw the correct way then probably a fault with the fan. But if it's not staying on at all, it may be that you don't have the permanent live to your fan, and maybe some has only wired a switched live. Hard to say without looking. Good luck with getting it sorted. Thanks for watching!

    Hi just a quick question. I’m about to add an extractor fan. The bathroom has 4 spot lights, I’ve been in the loft and saw the main connections that have powered the spots. There are three connectors one is live the other is neutral and the 3rd is earth. Now my situation is that the switch live and the permanent live have been connected into 1 terminal. My guess was to just run 1.5 twin earth from the switch/perm live and neutral to the neutral block and earth to earth for the extractor fan. This way the fan will come on with the light. Have you come across this kind of setup before and am I right in what I’m thinking. Thank you for posting your vids btw. Extremely helpful

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 7 років тому +1

      Hi Adarsh, not really sure what you mean. If the switched live and permanent live are in one terminal, from that point there would just be a permanent live. The permanent live goes from the loop in the ceiling, to the switch. Then the other side of the switch becomes the switched live (i.e. only live when switch is on) and this is returned to the live terminal (as in the diagram in the video). Without seeing it I cant really comment. If you have any doubt at all, call a qualified electrician to check it out for you. Sorry if that's not much help. I do also have another video where you use the light switch to operate the fan - How to fit a bathroom extractor fan using a light switch - ua-cam.com/video/Bi34gxa_-Mk/v-deo.html. I have a pull cord switch to operate the fan only. There is an isolator switch for the fan on the wall high up and a light switch separately outside of the room which only operates the light it has never done both only the light. The pull cord switch stopped working and wouldn’t switch on so I guessed the mechanism was broken. Took the pull cord switch down but stupidly didn’t take a photo of how it was connected! The switch fell apart so I binned it. I need a like for like replacement switch. There are 2 black wires 2 red wires and 2 earth wires sleeved together. There were no other connectors inside the pull cord housing. All of the wires were screwed into the pull cord switch terminals. None of the wires have tape on them to tell me which is the switched live. Any ideas? Have got a photo of the wires.

    Why not have the twin switch do:
    1. a light on light off
    2. Fan on Fan off (when light switch is on)
    . . . . . so that you can cut out the timer on the fan if you want to
    (eg middle of night bathroom visit, don't want the fan to run on).
    but it still acts in timed mode if you leave on (2) and switch light switch (1) off
    OR
    What about 3 switch?:
    1. a light on light off
    2. Fan on Fan off (when light switch is on)
    . . . . . so that you can cut out the timer on the fan if you want to
    (eg middle of night bathroom visit, don't want the fan to run on).
    but it still acts in timed mode if you leave on (2) and switch light switch (1) off
    3. Fan only, irrelevant if light switch (1) is on or off (i.e. not timed)
    Useful for all day ventilation without having to have the lights on at all.

    Why didn't you install it in the ceiling? Hot air and steam in the bathroom rise to the ceiling and are therefore less effectively ventilated by a wall-mounted fan.

    One thing for certain this fella is not a skilled electrician. Fitting two conductors into a single point termination of a Wago connector breaches manufacturers instructions. A perfect example of how the electrical trade is now dredging up silt.

      Except he didn’t actually do that 😂

    Couldn’t you just run a 2 core and earth from the light to the switch. Then a 3 core and earth then to the isolation switch. (Join neutral at back with a connector ) so you don’t need the junction box ?

      You'd need to run a neutral wire from light to isolation switch anyway and bring it all back up to the ceiling which would be a bit messy and long winded surely? Thank for watching.
