    The problem is, if I don't want to listen to anyone else's AI generated music, nobody is going to want to listen to mine. I'm running into that post-pandemic a lot with UA-cam videos. Nobody cares any more about watching other people's content. We're all just creating a custom vanity mirror to look back at ourselves. That's how humanity dies...

    • @TheoreticallyMedia
      @TheoreticallyMedia  Місяць тому +2

      Ngl: most people don’t want to listen to anyone’s music! Or, at least that’s what my own Spotify metrics tell me!
      Joke aside, you’re right. Already seeing that on various socials, flooded with other people’s Udio and Suno creations. And that’s ok- maybe this isn’t meant for outward facing “audience” music, but rather custom created individual song that you make for you. Like, “earbud music” not Aux connection music.

    • @choppergirl
      @choppergirl Місяць тому +2

      @@TheoreticallyMedia Yeah, I've used udio this week to turn old poems into songs, and give them an actual chance to travel and a new audience (nobody reads poems anymore, but being lazy they may listen to a song).
      If you were to set up a streaming radio station playing an AI song, then as that plays, creating the next one up in the que, and just broadcast a steady non-stop stream of AI created songs... would anybody listen to it?
      Yes, at first, it might be fascinating, but in no short time, if a listener had half a brain cell firing they'd think, this is all just autogenerated crrp to tug at my emotions. That being said, the supply of half of brain cells is diminishing in this burgeoning idiocracy.

      Haha, Yeah-- I don't really do the super cut-y zoom in, whoosh sound thing. I mean, a large part is that I do my own editing, so...I'm lazy?
      But yeah-- that ultra YT style just isn't my thing as well.
      It's funny, my pace (if we aren't diving into a tutorial section where we're looking closely at something) is about 5 seconds per shot. Which, is still kind of fast. I just don't feel the need to do a bunch of bells and whistles in that time.
      That, and I always just trust that you guys all have an attention span longer than 10 seconds!

    Thank you for the great overview. I think the most important feature to request, for actual control, is for the AI to be able to modify previous generations using a follow-up prompt like "This, but make the bass less pronounced and make it more upbeat". Coming from stable diffusion background, the thing that made image generative AI actually become a good tool for artists was the ability to work iteratively - get something close-ish to what you want, then refine it more and more and more with each new attempt. If we have to start from scratch every time, we're never getting exactly what we wanted.

  • @AdrianMRyan

    Stoked that more music stuff is coming out so you can talk about it.
    I also loved the short discussion last week. If you did a podcast that got actual musicians on to talk about AI openly, that'd be super cool. I'm thinking there's a whole world of people in the music industry, from producers to session musicians to ad jingle writers to the yes, rock stars, who all feel lots of different ways about it and are probably both worried and excited. Would be pretty great content, even if it's just a one-off or occasional thing.

    Just been spending the evening with Udio... all i can say is OMG. The depth... the virtuosity is incredible. I accidentally started a generation about being frustrated with a broken machine (was some default offering). It has now turned into an epic metal anthem about breaking free from societal oppression... with scorching music... a raw female singer... Incredible lyrics. (Udio AI writes amazingly. No lazy rhyming but really thoughtful and evocative prose) I have become totally obsessed with this track. Just trying to finish it off now. On 23 generations... but lots of that was experimenting and getting to know the app. Thanks for sharing the link... was having trouble finding it through Google. This app makes Suno v3 look kinda silly. Its not only my own song... but some of the ones Ive heard from others are breathtaking... this is next level stuff. I am totally impressed.

    Warning for Udio users: PLEASE fully read their terms of service, and while it is a bit swiss cheese that doesnt' mean it's not a worthy app for some: If you are interested in distributing music you've made: DONT, the Terms are a bit "wishy washy" in that they forget you can't upload directly to spotify and apple without a distributor, and it's a "NON COMMERCIAL PERSONAL AND ATTRIBUTIVE" sort of liscence, which means: if you're profiting off your music, try something else - I had to read it myself because i'm CURIOUS about AI music, because i use loops and samples myself that aren't AI generated and hoboy: I'm not going to attempt to use Udio and have to pay extra for attribution, and then get stuff taken down because they claim it before I can do anything.

    Tim at 1,200 songs per month FREE during the beta, what kind of volume do you see amassing? If Udio gains a thousand subscribers in the first month, that could be over 1 million songs (realizing that a lot of it might be just short riffs). But pre AI text-to-music, how many songs or tracks were published or copyrighted in say 2019, pre-pandemic (by everyday musicians, composers and songwriters)? The numbers become mind boggling when you think there will be multiple music generating platforms. You really have a great UA-cam channel! Keep up the great work!

    After spending a small amount of time messing around I got a good feel for what was possible and have made 4 full length songs already that sound really good. You can tell that it's AI if you properly listen and it lacks a little bit of consistency, e.g. the chorus might not always be exactly the same. Some features I'd love to see would be greater control over instrumentation etc, more consistency in key elements of the like the chorus, main melody, etc and I'd like the option to trim clips or allow a little more fuzziness between the different extensions. My only complaint is that vocals do still appear at times during sections that are supposed to be instrumental only. Usually it takes a couple of re-rolls to get what you're after.

    One problem I've had with other AI music generators is when I try to sample a section of the output and then use Ableton Live's "convert harmony/melody to new MIDI track" feature. It seems like the bitrate is so low and there's so much artifacting that the MIDI extraction ends up being so extremely noisy and chaotic that it's unusable, and it's just quicker to listen and manually play the part. (To be fair, this does happen to a lesser degree even with very clean high quality source material.) But I'll be interested to experiment with that feature with Udio's output.

Just the fact that mam can combine completely absurd style directions with each other relatively easily and without cramping AND that it still sounds good or at least interesting... UPDATE: Udio has already fixed the issue with consistent choruses that I mentioned below. It can now understand what's in your track within a 2 minute window whereas before is was only a 30 second window. That's impressively quick for support. Now, for me, this is now beating Suno, especially since Suno has run into issues with version 3. I've been able to easily extend Udio clips to over 3 minutes. At this point, I'm just waiting for the musician tools and an increase in clip length. Stems, or hopefully every track separate, will be prefect and that seems to be on Udio's radar.
    ***
    Having used this for a few days, there are definitely some things missing I'm sure others who write songs with lyrics may have noticed. I wasn't able to get consistency. Not even close. The extend feature often results in chaos. trying to get consistent verses and choruses isn't easily achieved. What I would prefer would be to see an app where you get to work on single sections without having to worry about fitting things into a 33 second window or some other number. Generating things and crossing your fingers isn't working for me.
    For example, it would be perfect if we had an option to work on the intro, verses, pre-choruses, choruses, bridge and any desired instrumental sections separately. Once and initial selection for a section is made, they should remain consistent with a scalable amount of variation in the music and melody via perhaps a slider that determines the amount of variation desired. Once worked out, we should be able to chain those sections as desired within an "arranger" that provides smooth transitions between the sections. And if we don't like that arrangement, we should be able to change it by re-ordering the sections and have the app automatically fix the transitions between sections to match. That would be much closer to how many songwriters work things out.
    Maybe this is asking for too much in the near future, but if this could be considered, I think everyone would be happy. For now, I'm doing a lot of offline editing and a lot of generating that wastes credits.

However, having played with it all evening, it is already driving me nuts...only 10 extensions to a song, so it won't compare to Suno, and while the solos are good and the ability to "go back" and create an intro is great, it can't even remember the vocalist from the start of the song, or the chorus! It also only works in roughly 32 second increments, whereas with Suno you often get nearly 2 minutes to start with (on a paid plan). And quality-wise, Suno v3 is pretty darn good...

    Your video popped up on my feed, so I decided to watch it (the UA-cam algorithm must've tied this in from my interest in AI generated images I s'pose), so I had to give this Udio a try...
    Holy Mackerel!!! As a gigging musician and "hired hun" of almost 40 years, I found Udio kind of scary to say the least!
    My first attempt was to make a Motown song in the style of the Supremes... that kind of sucked... (and in the AI's defense, I only spent a few minutes messing about with the prompt) maybe one of the songs was decent... then I took a stab at trying for a late 70s early 80s Prog Rock type of song... and bloody hell!!! That's the track that scared the shit out of me!
    The track that Udio generated from my (probably over-engineered) prompt could easily pass for an early Genesis, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and/or King Crimson's love child!
    Only after a couple attempts with the Prog Rock prompt, it gave me damn near what I asked for (maybe even better) --- haunting, catchy, melodic, harmonized vocal line -- complex rhythms and somewhat odd time signatures -- powerful bass line... aye aye aye!
    This tool is pretty effing scary if you ask me... but I'm absolutely intrigued by the technology... I mean... holy hell!!! And the thought that this (as well as the audio track isolation AI's) technology is SO in its infancy... my mind can only imagine what it'll be like this time next year!
    Thanks for (albeit accidentally) turning me on to this tool... I'm probably gonna lose lots of sleep messing around with it, trying to come up with the most useful prompts!

      Yeah, Udio is pretty insane! A few things to note that I didn’t mention in the video: for one, the output is at 96k Mp3, is it isn’t (at least for now) going to be appearing in a pro session.
      They do plan on releasing a “pro” version for musicians where you can generate stems. Not sure for certain, but you might be able to upload a reference guitar track you wrote and prompt something like: Bombastic Hard hitting 70s arena rock drums, no double bass” and basically get John Bonham playing drums on your track. Which…even I as type that, wow.
      Really, really crazy and exciting times ahead!
      And yeah, it is stupid good at prog. That “zappa” track was interesting, as I actually heard a lot of vocal Yes harmonies in there!
