  • Recorded on July 9th, 1972, the tape begins with a representative of the Illinois delegation under the command of Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley pleading their case to convention committee members. McGovern supporters filed challenges against the delegation due to their incongruence with the newly established primary conduct laws mandating greater representation for women and minority groups. Ultimately, following a ruling by Chairwoman of the Credentials Committee Patricia Harris, the Illinois delegation in its entirety- including Daley himself- were barred from being seated. A new slate of delegates, led in part by PUSH founder Jesse Jackson, who were committed to McGovern were eventually seated in their place.
The video transitions to a speech from Coretta Scott King- widow of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.- in introduction and support of Senator George McGovern who proceeds to make a speech to the hall as well.
