One very nice thing about this lens is that there are lots of used copies for sale in very good condition which is how I got mine (saved about 50% compared to full price)

Do you have any advice for a newbie when picking up lenses second hand? Being new to photography I'm nervous about second hand but then at the same time I'm also nervous about the price of some lenses when brand new!

    • @AquaticBaboon
      @AquaticBaboon Рік тому

@@deterrentdubz9116 I've gotten all of mine from either KEH or Adorama in their used sections. They're VERY conservative with the rating system, some of mine that were listed as "ugly" look nearly new. They also have a good return policy so it makes it easier to go with a used lens. As long as there's some level of guarantee/return policy then you should be safe

I feel like a 70-200/4 doesn't even fall into the same category as a 70-200/2.8. The cost and weight difference between the two make 70-200/2.8 out of the consideration for most; if not, I don't think a 70-200/4 would even need to exist.

@@coffeeandspice Well. For me, same range but difference F value is same category. Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II is far much lighter then version I. Just the price difference is huge. However, I am quite sure Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II is a good investment because it shouldn't show any price drop in coming 2-3 years. If you really need this range and use it a lot, Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II is well worth it. ;-) In additions, 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverter is compatible with Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II make it more versatile in daily use.

Good review, I hired this lens for a weekend and found the focal planes very difficult to master, at f4 f8 at 200mm with my A7r3 and using eye tracking I had a hit rate of 40 per cent, with a lot of out of focus issues. At 70mm it was much better I found f5.6 sharp and useable, but having to up my iso to give me a faster shutter speed was something I didn't enjoy, glad I rented, off to Italy in May and hiring the 2.8 as it's more versatile.

Wow yes! Finally the first 70-200 sony lens review! And surprisingly it's the very old one being launched amoung the first series of fullframe lenses by Sony introducing A7 series in 2013! And these great results really surprised me making me wondering how nice the new F2.8 GM ii version would be! BTW seeing the A7rii was another surprise! I bet it's footage was stolen by some aliens and they decided to give it back for the Earth Day!

Sharpness is really good, even if slightly worse at 200mm. I found it really surprising though how slow the autofocussing was. Usually Sony really excells there, even at older designs i think. Personally i would just pay for Tamron 70-180mm F2.8. Used it cost around 1000 Euros. Sure, you lose some focal range, but in return you get better sharpness, similar autofocussing speed and most importantly a brighter aperture, which i prefer over the stabalization.

A good enough lens but perhaps showing its age a little. Hopefully once Sony are done upgrading their GM line with MkII versions they'll get round to also refreshing this one.
I went with the Tamron 70-180mm 2.8 instead, thinking that the brighter aperture would be more helpful when shooting moving subjects, and its short MFD (albeit with MF) is a neat little bonus. I like the Tamron, but I suspect I would have also been happy with the Sony.

    Photographer's can be such snobs😂
Sony when this lens came had to make a great lens it could not be second rate and they succeeded!
Internal zoom for goodness sake alone is a wonder! Sharper than sharp lens.
    "Oh but its f4!"
    F4 - 2.8 One Stop!
One stop on a lens that is already sharper than sharp.
Of course 10 years later Sony have added to there lens range but the way you know that there is no need to spend vast amount of money is the fact that they stop talking about this lens as they know is all you need if you are in control of your shoot.
Remember everything starts to get easier from F4 and with the cameras out now One Stop is not an obstacle.
Wanting and needing are two completely different frames of mind.
I always wanted to be the Silver Surfer when I was a kid 😂😂😂
    One stop for goodness sake!😊

Just my two cents: I think the way you determine and judge sharpness is misleading. I owned a Samyang AF85, Sony 85/1.8 and Sigma 85/1.4. You said all were sharp in the middle wide open, but in my own experience Samyang was soft and even closed down it never catched the SigmaDGDN85 at f/1.4. And I don't have a 42mp camera, but a 24mp. The video muddies the image severely. Maybe you could start uploading/hosting you sample images? Lot's of free places nowadays. (I'd also like to add, we don't know the sharpness settings in LR(or whatever software you use) or incamera settings if you shoot JPG.)
