An unassuming man with proficient rifle skill helped to save his country. Only 5 feet 3 and absolutely deadly.
Indeed. Thanks for watching
Dynamite comes in a small package lol
I read someone talking about the war in Bosnia and I remember him saying the best soldiers were either short or really skinny. Which is interesting to think about when you compare it to the modern US military image of super muscular guys
A true hero. Rest in peace sir.
Thanks for watching.
I've heard his story many times, but this is one of the best presentations to date. Great work.
Wow, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
One of the best...definitly! 🤗
As a vet editor and prEditor of primetime hits, this was very well done. I’ve seen lots of videos about this guy, this was great from both a technical media, and military perspective.
- Thank you, Mr. Colin Heaton and team.
Thank you kindly!
Iraq 06, we had a very bad En Sniper problem, plagued us the entire deployment. Our Bn did counter sniper ops the best we could. 1 time, a tank threw a track, right in front of our Conpany COP.. The driver popped out to inspect and the En Sniper got him in the neck. We lost over 10 Marines in a 7 month deployment. up to the 3rd from last day , when we were buttoned up doing a RIP with the next unit.. The En sniper took out one of our Gaurds on post. To this day, The fear that sniper had over us in chilling. Sniper can be very effective in soo many ways. USMC 94-2014 Ret Semper Fi , great video, you guys do a great job in history! kee it coming!
Thanks for sharing and watching. Semper Fi!
There was a bad single round shooter issue in Iraq 06... you think you baught a copy of jason Bourne and you wind up hearing local music to seeing shakey cam of your own blokes being engaged with red circles painted around them.
Everybody gangster until the snow starts shooting back...
LOL
Thanks for watching.
I'm not a sniper but I do hunt deer, turkey, quail, dove and can tell you each one requires a different skill set. To have the skill set this man had and to reach the proficiency he did is truly admirable. Great job Colin and Mike . I have always enjoyed even in the beginning when the sound was terrible but I agree with everyone else the editing is terrific. 💯👍🏻👍🏻🇱🇷
We are getting better as we get better equipment. Thanks for watching.
@@FORGOTTENHISTORYCHANNEL you are getting better with all of it audio, visual etc. The channel is growing and I like the subject matter ya'll produce. Some of it concerning race I'm still getting responses to my comments in some cases are well over a hundred and some are very offensive. But these subjects must be addressed in a civil manner. My conversations would not happen without ya'lls hard work and recognizing this must be addressed. So with that said a heart felt thank you and keep up the great work ya'll do.
@@FORGOTTENHISTORYCHANNEL oh, where's my heart?
Here ya go, LOL. Thanks James.
@@FORGOTTENHISTORYCHANNEL 🤣👍🏻👍🏻
This guy is getting a real cult following these past few years. Man for man, the Finnish may have been the best army of the 2oth century, when you think about it. They weren't just tough, but truly smart, and gave new meaning to the word "precision." Take care.
We appreciate it very much.
He needs a movie. An accurate one !
Hes in a new anime series as well, its called record of ragnarok
Wow 5’3” is so small especially considering how large in general Finnish people are.
This is by far the best video I’ve seen on the ‘White Death’. Beautiful editing, eloquent narration. ❤ from this Aussie.
Since we’re on the subject of snipers, how about doing a show on two Anzacs sniper.
Billy Sing aka ‘The Assassin’, Australia’s top sniper in WW1 with 300 kills to his name.
Sergeant Richard Travis aka ‘The King Of No-Man’s Land’, New Zealand’s top sniper who won the VC at the Battle of Rossignol Woods when he single-handedly knocked out an enemy wire entanglement, captured two machine guns and repelled an enemy counter-attack before reinforcements arrived.
Great subjects, we may do more snipers. There are so many great stories. Thanks for watching.
Simo Hayha is my favorite warrior of any kind; any era.
Thanks for watching
Hi Colin
I’ve seen a lot of documentaries about the legend, but I think that your version was a lot more detailed.
There is a movie in the pipeline dedicated to him titled white death.
Thanks for presenting another great fascinating piece of history ❤😊
Anytime. Thanks for watching.
Viljam Pylkäs killed 83 Red Army soldiers in one skirmish with a sub machine gun.
Thanks for watching.
Yeah but they didn't dispatch a squadron of planes to specifically bomb him to take him out of the fight.... just saying. But damn 83 in one skirmish, that's impressive
Jeah and then there was Einar Schadewitz man who stand on soviet tank with granate banging the turret and shouting "avvoo Iivana kuolema kolkuttaa!" "Open it up Ivan the death is banging!" And all other occasion he had against soviets.
A movie clip about that is on YT with the title "Finnish scouts ambush Soviet force"
Белая смерть- Simo Hayha lived long enough to see the Soviet Union go to the junkyard of history. Well done Dr. Heaton. The Finnish variant of the 1891 Mosin-Nagant is by far the best one ever in service. My guess Simo's eyesight was better than 20/20. As for the Soviets of that time or the Russians of our time, nothing changes.
Great video, brother! My ancestor's come from Finland and my great uncles would often speak of "The Winter War" of 1939-40! Thank you for this great video!
Thanks for watching.
This guy was a definitely a badass thank you so much for this. I've been such a fan of his, because he was DA GOAT. I think that White feather was another one bad ass,
Thank for watching. We have one on Hathcock as well if you haven't seen it.
@@FORGOTTENHISTORYCHANNEL yes , and Sempre Fi.👮🏿 I know they don't have any military emoji so I just used this one.
Thanks for this video. I’m Finnish and my grandpa fought both winter war and continiation war against russia. I wish all the best for Ukraine..
Lengendary shooter! Never to be forgotten.
👍🇫🇮 💪
Totally. Thanks for watching.
My family left Finland 25 years before the war. I had to learn about this about 30 years ago.
We'll miss you Simo, brave and humble; Finland is a great country with a rich history, and you are an interesting part of it.
Thanks for watching.
Enjoyed this video Colin. Showing how when one fights for ones home and hearth. One does what one must to protect those unable to fight. 💪🏻🙏🏻✨
Absolutely. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and keep your videos coming please.
Thanks, will do!
Excellent documentary as always! Your editing has definitely improved over the last few videos!
I have a video suggestion. Speaking of Finnish military history, you guys should make a documentary about Lauri Torni - the soldier who fought in three different armies!
Anyways, keep up with the high quality content!
On the burner. Thanks for watching. he is also the only former SS officer buried in Arlington National cemetery.
I had heard about him. I was wondering what happened to him. Thank you for the update
Anytime. Thanks for watching.
Mr. Heaton, I rarely leave comments. But this was a fantastic documentary on one of the most interesting warriors of all time.
I have followed and will continue to follow your videos from Colombia.
Congratulations and thank you for your service !
Appreciated. Thanks for watching.
I just was looking up the deadliest sniper the other day. Weird when things like this happens. This isn't something I knew alot about.
Thanks for watching
As a guy who grew up shooting it's not too surprising that I became a sniper.
While going through sniper school we were introduced to this incredible hero, Simo Hayha.
Though I was a history buff in school, I had never heard of him. Learning about him I couldn't believe that his name never was spoken or written about in any text I'd read. Why?
My sincere thanks for your work in educating all who have an interest.
Yes, in sniper school you learn about some of the greats. I was fortunate enough to have known Hathcock and Hetzenauer.
@FORGOTTENHISTORYCHANNEL To have known both Gunny Hathcock AND Herr Hetzenauer is amazing.
That Herr Hetzenauer managed to survive 5 years in a Soviet prison is incredible too.
There is nothing to say about Gunny Hathcock that's not been said already. While I was never a Marine, I cross-trained with those gents and found them tough to keep up with, they were all hard chargers. They were also loyal, tough, and great guys. And, they put up with me. LOL! They were the best guys I ever worked with, and those Scout Sniper men were serious bad@sses. They pushed me every minute of every day I was with them.
But, if anyone tells me one more Chesty Puller story, that's clearly a lie I may just lay down and stop eating until it's time for me to be cremated. Just kidding, I'm not ready to go just yet.
Heh, it's been almost exactly a year since I died, twice on the same day. My wife was worried that I'd been hypoxic long enough to no longer have the few marbles I have left. When I finally woke up, there was my wife's face. There's no better way for me to wake up from anything. She's the best person I've ever known, and we've known each other since we were teenagers. That is a helluva long time ago.
Keep up the great work, Sir!
I love watching videos on Simo. The story is out of this world. You always get some sort of new information. As usual you guys rocked with your content
Thank you kindly
Best sniper ever...without sniper optics. Never, ever be like that! 🤗
Agreed. Thanks for watching.
Superb video - fascinating subject, great editing and excellent, informed & well-spoken narration. Thanks for the video & RIP to Simo Hayha
Thank you kindly
Fabolous show. Many thanks.
Almost night, a crimson horizon painting thousand lakes red
As your army approach from the east, a hunter is switching his prey
All alone, a man with his gun wanders into the wild
Tracks you down, you cannot hide once he is on to your trail
Thanks for watching.
When i was very young Simo would come to Dancy he was friends with my uncle Sal but liked to hang with my Pa because he was more humble . I was very young and one side of his face was kinda scary . My uncle was one of few that carried a welrod .
Great facts. Thank you!
Thanks for watching
This was fantastic. I wish my dad was alive. He would have loved this piece.
Thanks for watching.
Great video - thanks.
You bet
Very good sir, I really appreciate it
You are most welcome
You are most welcome
@@FORGOTTENHISTORYCHANNEL have ever heard of Timothy Murphy? Part of Morgan's Riflemen, took a shot that had a huge impact on the American Revolution. Kinda the early sniper
I love Simo Hyhya. Love frome Poland
i have to correct at least one thing, finland had only ONE (1) battle ready tank when winter war began, finland had only few old renaults and they lacked radios or guns.... only one was ready to use, so.... :D
LOL
@@FORGOTTENHISTORYCHANNEL lolwut :)
Excellent as always. From Ireland ☘️

5:26 All “sneepers” are trained like hunters 😂 love these guys and this channel.
We appreciate it. Thanks for watching.
Special doesn't even begin to describe. this man
I was unaware up until today that Simo Hayha used hollow point bullets. I have no problem with someone deifying the Geneva convention while defending their homeland from an invasion.
Well, Finland never signed the convention, neither did the USSR.
Thank you for that. I was unaware until now of both of those facts.
Wonderful video. First learned of Simo from Count Dankula. 5'3", short kings, keep your heads up.
Thanks for watching
Excellent 🙏
Thanks for watching.
May we all live such a worthy life. RIP, sir.
Agreed. Thanks for watching.
excellent stuff, Simmo Hayha is a legend
Yes indeed. Thanks for watching.
You know, i think its a virtue of humanity's to admire a developed skill, no matter what the skill may be. I think it speaks to the universal drive and desire to be better than what one currently is, and even speaks to a certain humility without which, admiration and aspiration is impossible. Alot of people, and maybe even some psychologists would call this sadistic fantasy; anybody that says this though is probably not anything close to the profundity, wisdom, and introspectiveness they would pretend to. This is an admiration of the same sort given to the David Goggins' of the world. This fact is reflected in the celebration of these developed skills regardless of what side they may have arose on; the attention to deviations from convention; and the creativity and individuality displayed....im not a big fan of war and since coming out of the military, have come to loathe just about everything surrounding the military, and those occupations that have arouse out of out perpetual wars and this developing caste of "warriors" in the US. This cant but be admired though.
Thanks for watching.
@@FORGOTTENHISTORYCHANNEL thank you sir, love your content.
@@FORGOTTENHISTORYCHANNEL one word , damn.
Sir,can you do one on the Axumite empire? It's fitting for this channel because most if not all of the history is forgotten..
Great suggestion. We will consider. Thanks for watching
Can you please do a video on the Levon Affair, Samson [and JFK’s assassination], and maybe the date rhyming with 7-11 [Dr. Alan $@]8]20$K¥, former head of the US Army War College], and the contractors they’re somehow silent partners with not [not to mention Microsoft being moved to Tel Aviv and it’s coding being done there], the stealing of our tech and military hardware and gifting of it to the PLA?
Your USS Liberty video was what brought me to your channel, and THOSE, are certainly Forgotten History.
They’d obviously need to be spread out, or we’ll lose you.
Cheers
Possible future subjects. Thanks for watching.
Correction: Häyhä operated in Kollaa River area, which is north of Lake Ladoga, not in Kola Peninsula. And reindeers were used in northern, Lappland areas, rest of the Finnish Army used horses as transport.
Thanks for your insight
Interestingly i saw that Finnclassic shotgun style rifle actions can be had with combo set and double rifle sets in the 7,62*53R (.308 /.311) Finnish Mosin cartridge. And some of the better mid level suited cartridge that for many kind of big game hunting .
Proud of my Finnish blood, that man should have been considered a national treasure for smoking so many commies.
Respect from southern Alberta
Thanks!
Welcome! Thanks for watching.
There needs to be a movie about Soviet female snipers scarlett Johansson would be cool
Agreed. See our video on Ludmilla Pavlichenko. Thanks for watching.
Propaganda. Men struggle with the rigors of sniper training and tactics. Just like US special operations and special forces, it's not likely that any woman is capable of the things those men do. Israel is a better place to look at what women are actually capable of than the obviously fictional history of the Soviet pipedreams.
Amazing story! Such a brave Finnish soldier!
Question?
Was there a lady from Russia, with the same abilities with a rifle?
Respectfully..

Unimaginable PTSD for taking 600+ lives.

PTSD - Perhaps PTSD from half his face being blown off and 26 operations within a year.
We Americans become afraid when the trees begin speaking Vietnamese.
The Russians become afraid when the snow starts speaking Finnish.
See·Mo How·Ha
When the snow starts speaking Finnish you've entered the wrong forrest.
LOL. Thanks for watching.
Finland did in ww2 what America did in the rev war. They went up against a vastly superior enemy and held their own
Indeed.
Cool vid.
Thx for this
Any time!
There is a piece of information that i think is important that isnt talked about.
When he was shot in the face, it was during a larger attack, had he been hunting out there alone when he was shot he would not have been found, he would have died to his wounds, but that is not what happened.
So i dont think he was sniping when he got hit, he was defending an area that the Russians knew the location of, he did not get to choose his position carefully.
We do not know if he was in a hide at that time, and he may have just been a target of opportunity. Thanks for watching.
I like open sights myself. The most important skill of the sniper is the egress and stealth however.
Correct, along with range estimation. Thanks for watching
Of all the Soviet deaths from gunshot, what is Simo's percentage? It has to be close to 1%. Whatever it may be, it's a huge number.
Unknown, good question though. Thanks for watching.
Russian state archive have 167000 about, dead or m.i.a in winter war. Now, considering how small finnish artillery was, we can play with estimated numbers. Lets assume that those 167000 only 25% died for bullet, its 41750. 1% of that 41750 is about 417. So if our thought experiment is anywhere near of reality, then you are absolutely right. Simo's part of the russian k.i.a for bullet would be more than 1%. Scary thought.
@@phm19880 It's just my way of looking at the numbers, almost nobody (but me) thinks in percentages
@@theallseeingmaster yeah. And theres nothing wrong about it, and in my experience, many people tend to do something like that. Myself also, in some cases and some amounts. But i was surprised when i do that "poormans" calculation, with my knowledge that was maybe the most realistic estimate or russian k.i.a. for bullets( i also think it can be higher, but i doubt not smaller), it was weird ti see that 1% that u said, come out in my thought experience also. I am layman in this area, but i have some idea about big picture. I am second lieutenant( reservin vänrikki ) in finnish army reserve. I have allways been interested about this topic, and i had my fare share of studying of war history in RUK( reserve officer school) in 2003.
Imagine reading your own obituary
I still think that Selma Hayek has caused more deaths than Simo Haya. But they were both great warriors.
LOL. Thanks for watching.
My M39 is my favorite rifle. Not exactly like his but it's close 😂.

can you make video on the canadian sniper with the world record for longest shot

Just like all other soldiers, a sniper is only a murderer if he deliberately shoots the wounded, medics or POW.
Unless the man he wounded is a high value target.
Fair enough

Sir there is history i would like to know.. i wonder what caused the roman empire to not pursuing china?.. have they never met in battle once??
We may assume that there were far too many enemies in between them, and Rome was not that powerful. If it had sent legions that far on conquest, there would have been too few to protect the existing empire, even Rome itself. Thanks for watching.
