Hard to imagine that sweet nice girl from Royal Ballet nailing this role with that naughty smile! She's so graceful and dances so well.

Yuhui Choe is one of the best Odile's I've ever seen. She's the perfect fit for this role with her smile that's evil yet very seductive. She's just enchanting to watch. She needs to be promoted to principal as soon as possible and dance this with the Royal Ballet.
watching this in 2019 and yuhui choe still hasn't been promoted to principal. it's honestly a crime given her skill and artistry
This video is from nine years ago, when Yuhui Choe was still very young. Yet her Odile comes to life. Her Odile takes off in a way that Marianela Nunez's never really does, even in Liam Scarlett's new Swan Lake production at the Royal Ballet. I never realized that Yuhui Choe's face could be so expressive - the use of her eyes! Has not Kevin O'Hare seen this? Why doesn't he put Choe in Swan Lake? Hell, why doesn't he promote her to principal already?!
2023. A few days ago it was announced who was promoted in the RB and once again, I didn't see Yuhui on the list. She continues to be the first soloist. I hope she gets promoted to Principal one day.
I saw her interview from the Royal Ballet channel and never thought such a sweet and soft girl could pull of a great interpretation like this. In fact, this is the first video of her dancing that I have ever seen, and I'm glad it's such a good one. Most of the lauded interpretations of like Zakharova's and the Black Swan film version emphasize Odile's sexual, animalistic, and aggressive character.
I love Yuhui's interpretation because I get to see an Odile's that is, at the same time, both really sweet and charming (so you get why the Prince and the court all fall for her) as well as sinister and manipulative. Her movements aren't jerky or wild, and it's soft with just enough coyness to convincingly portray an impersonation of the White Swan while also being sensual and seductive. Her smile alone in that last pose/frame already tells us very much about how aware she is of her effect, and that everything is in fact very much calculated.
Overall, an unexpected interpretation. I can't wait to see more of her!

I have to admit, I couldn't quite picture Yuhui Choe as Odile, but she was really great. I'd only seen her do smaller parts, all very sweet and innocent characters, and her face is so young and sweet I wasn't sure how she'd do, but she made it work wonderfully. Instead of being a straight-up vamp, she makes Odile so fresh and free-spirited that you can't help but want to chase after her.
Her smile at 7:21 is absolute perfection! It's nuances like these that separate fine performances from incredible ones. That smile alone shows how much she understands the character.
She's the best Black swan to me. Beautiful face, beautiful smile, beautiful neck, beautiful arms and shouders. Love her movements.
I knew Choe's white swan would be wonderful because her lyrical and softness in dancing has always been applauded by critics. What I didn't expect was for her black swan to be so great. I felt myself being filled with dread thinking about how the prince was going to break Odette's heart afterwards. Excusing a few technical wobbles, she has gorgeous port de bras.
I hope that someone in the Royal Ballet has watched this broadcast and gives Choe more opportunities to do Swan Lake! She's wonderful!
She has more variations than some western blackswans. Very highly skilled and beautiful. Lots of gracious flirtatious moves too.
Truly wonderful characterization from Yuhui. Makes Siegfried's falling in love with Odile totally plausible whereas normally, one wants to shout to him" How could you be so blind?" Malevolently enchanting!
Yuhui is absolutely exquisite.
Her musicality and the precision of her movement is superb.
Watching them I had goosebumps and it's currently 27.C degree! Jung looks genuinely in awe, as under a spell himself, with Choe who pulls off this very complex role in an effortless fashion. She is without a doubt my favorite Swan Queen even though I'm aware her technique might not be up to par with the likes of Zakharova but in my opinion her interpretation of Odile is simply flawless, when it comes down to the graceful perfection of her lines, her impressively convincing expressions that changes from an affected shyness, to a manipulative, almost destructive confident smirk, to the most charming of smiles that makes us understand how she allured the prince, with such ease. Very subtle, not as aggressive, but for me Choe's interpretation is the most effective in telling this beautiful story.
Its hard to be as well rounded as Yuhui Choe is! wow!

Yuhui Choe is absolutely incredible here! She really deserves a shot at this in London.
With such a sweet and decent girl as Odile's Yuhui Choe, we can hardly blame the Prince. Even the most intelligent and strong-minded man would fall for her. And that's how it goes in normal life, things are never only wrong or right, good or bad, it comes under different forms that fits most of any demands and/or standards of this society. For me, this is why act III is the most favorite part of Swan Lake, I'm always curious to see how the supposed-to-be bad comes.
No doubt Yuhui Choe is the première danceuse of the Royal Ballet. Her techniques are nice, precise and stable. Her expression is inspiring and her interpretation worths her artistic signature. I long to know more about her dancing.
I find myself very annoyed by the camera work. This is lovely, and it is impossible to fully appreciate dancing when the arms and legs are cut off to focus on the face, or worse, when they focus on Sigfried for 30 seconds while Odile is dancing! I am very, very grateful to the person who uploaded the video, Choe is an amazing dancer, one of my favorites! Thank you so much for sharing this with us koeniginreina!
It's certanly different from watching an euroupean or american ballet (their dancing style), but I liked their version better. She's much more expressive than most european and american primas I had watched before and much more convincing too. All of them have much more expression. Much more pleasant to watch.
Despite the slightly cringe-worthy camera work, dayum this girl can breath Odile!

Besides making the dancing look perfectly effortless, Yuhui's flirty, mischievous mannerisms really bring life to Odile here. It would be easy to fall for her!
I've never seen a dancer like Yuhui Choe. She is so amazing and beautiful!
You can see what a great dancer she is even only by the entrance, the power of her gestures. These things make the difference between a good ballerina and a grat artist.

Yuhui is absolutely gorgeous as Odile! We watched her as Swanilda in Coppelia for New Year's eve at ROH and a truly wonderful ballerina. I really hope she can be promoted to principal!

she doesnt has the most beautiful lines, but she has that precision, she has that clean cut between her movements. So clean and everything is so well placed, her positions, her body....she didnt show her flexibility like most russian dancers do, but it was pretty looking at her dancing.

So, apparently I'm crap at reading the subtleties of facial expressions, but I think I get the subtleties of movement better, how all the varieties of coy, pride, charm and that kind of mischievous allure of a cat that will end up scratching your arms any moment dont trust cats they're evil, are expressed. That or Yuhui is a goddahm genius, which is very likely.

Her facial expressions are mesmerizing! I can't take my eyes off her! She so perfectly embodies the mischevious, seductive charm of Odile.
And another thing. Yuhui Choe is a far more expressive and physically arresting dancer than either of the Royal Ballet's two current Asian (Japanese) prima ballerinas, Akane Takada and Fumi Kaneko. They're both lovely but they're not a patch on Yuhui Choe when it comes to commanding a stage.

Love YuHui. I feel like the performance would have been so much better if there was better chemistry with the male dancer. That’s not the fault of the dancers though. Casting is casting.
