Her voice has character and her phrasing is dynamite. She has a doo-wop phrasing style that, when matched with her impeccable enunciation, is simply sublime. Martha Reeves had a churchy quality to her voice, Florence Ballard had a bluesy quality to her voice, and Mary Wilson also had a doo-wop style of singing that had a sultriness to it as opposed to the whiny quality that Diana Ross had (not to mention, the way she pronounced words).
I love her soul music especially, because she doesn't have to scream, yell, and holler to be affective like her counterparts. Yet, her control, pitch, tonality, and emotiveness are spellbinding, while her versatility is unmatched, as she can add the right amount of soul without changing the material and making it out of a gospel song when it's not.
Her voice has always been so underrated because she doesn't have the earthy, deep sound like some of her contemporaries. Her voice cuts through instrumentation like no one's business! That is absolute power to me!
For all of the die hard DR fans, it has always been an outrageous lie that Diana Ross couldn't sing. She is a perfectionist and during the 70s she worked very hard to be a perfect vocalist and she did it!
Diana is an amazing singer. Think of all the different kinds of music you have heard from Diana, standards, show tunes, country, pop, r&b, not to mention 18 #1 hits in this country alone. +Keith Sheared I am aware of Beyonce’s range, but generally speaking, Diana sings higher than Beyonce. Diana has a better pitch, more emotions without having to grunt, growl or having to do any vocal acrobats, and can interpret a contemporary love ballad in a manner Beyonce cannot compete with. Thus, she is in a different CLASS altogether. This is because Diana has a keen artistic interpretative ability to sing a song and capture the essence of the song to make it a CLASSIC. Thus, Diana may not be the loudest singer or overdone with the vocal acrobats, but she can follow and interpret a lyric to make her own inimitable sound and define herself as an artist to make CLASSICS. Beyonce has not reached that level of artistry yet. That’s why all she can really SING AND CHART is booty-shaking material. Moreover, you all confuse lightness of voice with weak. That’s just her voice type. Beyonce, has a nice pitch as she has modeled herself after Diana in that way and a nice voice, but she is not REFINED nor DEFINED enough where she can touch classic pieces and make them hits and timeless pieces.
+Keith Sheared Better Performer?! If you mean by shakin’ your butt and gyrating in a vulgar manner while half naked, than Beyonce would qualify. Yet, if you are talking about dancing in a classic, culturally artistic, and naturally elegant manner, than Ross would only qualify. You need to look her 60’s live performances and look at her dancing in the Wiz. In terms of acting, Beyonce need not be mentioned. In terms of charisma, Beyonce is not to be discussed. In terms of presence and speaking voice, Diana owns her space and has one of the best speaking voices ever. Thus, when the two Tenors perform with any female, they tend to choose Ross overwhelmingly due to voice, versatility, looks, class, style, and artistry. Therefore, when you say better performer, it all depends on the audience. Diana has done what Beyonce and every other black female artist has done, but can they do what she has done. They are not VERSATILE.

I could just strangle the liars that started that hatin' BS about Diana's singing! She's a remarkably talented singer, perhaps the most underrated vocalist of all the great modern divas. This all began when she left the Supremes. The hate mongers blamed Diana for the ultimate decline of the beloved trio. Still, it is NOT fair to Ms. Ross. Thanks for making this wonderful video proving what deep inside everyone already knows, that Diana Ross' voice is an international treasure to be appreciated and enjoyed by the world over and for generations to come. AND THANK YOU MS. ROSS!!!
People, You are listening to the best. This woman, can sing. Her ace, or what makes her the best, is she simply sings, and she brings you along with her... You want to listen to her. You are taken on a trip with her....You go willingly, and lovingly...diction..enunation, clarity, pitch perfect phrasing, and execution of her words....it is called singing....talent...
ON THE NAIL! That is what other R and B AND Black singers are missing...that ability to control their voice to sing it precisely as it was written with the style of the music, WITHOUT making it out of a gospel/R and B version. She can add the right amount of soul to sing different types of music. She is versatile with a pitch perfect voice and that special tone. She is not the loudest singer and has a strong voice, but her voice type carries differently. Yet, those other singers don't sound better than she.
I always felt she was such a strong woman to go thru all the BS from so many misinformed envious hateful people and just kept it moving!!!!! Kudos to a real Legend Star icon trailblazer etc....this is one crazy industry if your strong enough and she was then and still is now.
She has one of the most beautiful pitch perfect voices I ever heard, loud or soft. Like it or not, Diana in her prime can sing what these other Black/R&B singers can sing. Yet, they CANNOT sing what she can sing ever (traditional/contemporary love songs, show tunes, country/western, classic pop, etc.) Really she does not compete with them like people keep comparing her to, for she is more versatile. She can sing what is & has been typically slated for a white woman, but add enough soul to it to make it crossover worldwide to distinguish her. That’s why even white woman in her era could not outsell/outdo this woman, including Barbara Streisand, Bette Middler, etc. Thus, those Black singers were not competition for her. Therefore, she was undervalued because she wasn’t black enough for many & many whites felt like whom does she think she is as to encroach on what they consider exclusively theirs. Accordingly, she offends a lot of people, MOSTLY IN AMERICA, because she has the best of both worlds. Had she’d been a white woman, she would have never been denied.
Many of the black female singers in her prime like Aretha franklin was able to do the same diverse genres as Diana and she was more an innoviative vocalist as she created variety of vocal styles, the same goes to Barbra Streisand
@@Kevin-rg3yc History does not support what you stated. Aretha may perform different songs from different types of music; however, always interprets them from that GOSPEL perspective. Accordingly, it charts that way. That’s why Berry favored Diana over Flo and Mary, because he liked Doris Day and wanted someone who could promote a tone, clarity, and style that could sing those types of songs, but sing other types as well. That’s why the Supremes had commercial appeal. Barbara can’t sing R and B well. She may have a fine voice but doesn’t sing those down and out songs as though she lived that life. It is another great performance but can be quite clinical. That’s why no other artist has ever channeled Billie Holiday the way Diana has to sing Lady Day. Not even Aretha or Barbara! Diana can sing what other Black artists can sing, and what White woman really can’t as well as a Black woman can typically. Yet, she can sing what would be slated for a White woman, like the song “To Love Again”. Diana can take her soul to the left or right; that’s why she’s charted in every category pretty much.
@@classanddignity umm history does support me bc you would know aretha was only limited to gospel during her young years before signing with Columbia in the early/mid 1960s where she did a variety of genres such as pop standards, broadway show tunes, jazz, doo wop, blues and R&B, that didn't have any interpretations or elements of gospel. In fact, after aretha got signed to Columbia she wouldn't any gospel music until the masterpiece album known as Amazing Grace She even did an extremely outstanding rendition of a classic opera song at the 1998 grammys which is regarded as one of greatest live performances of all time
I'd kill to have a voice like hers!! There is nothing this lady hasn't got and still to this day she can sing like this! More young girls need a role model like Diana, truly inspirational ❤️
Definitely checked! There are so many more great live performances you could easily do a Part 2. How about the Royal Albert Hall "Somewhere" and "Jesus Christ Superstar", the 1973 Caesar's Palace "Corner of the Sky", the Midnight Special "One Love in My Lifetime", the Central Park Day 2 and T*****t Show "Let's Go Up", 1986 AMA Eaten Alive", Workin' Overtime Wembly Stadium "Say We Can", Soul Train Music Awards "Take Me Higher". You could also feature some of her impressive smoky low notes, especially those starting in the 90s. Beautiful, inspiring work!
The greatest!! Her voice is so powerful, the way she delivers the lyrics is so unbelievable! All my admiration for you Ms. Ross, you're my endless love ❤️
Have mercy! I always said it! Lots didn't listen but now they can. All those different ranges from B to E she is effortless without unnecessary over singing. A true God given talent and a beautiful beautiful looking lady X that mouth, that smile, that flawless skin and oh yeah THAT VOICE X thanks for this posting
finally a video that shows that this true legend has real vocal prowess...great video....how about a video showcasing her vocal talents in the film The Wiz...she hit some powerful and soft notes during brand new day, home, as well as Be a Lion to name a few..
I love this compilation,, but one of my favorite vocals of Ms. Ross is when she sings God Bless The Child in Central Park at the end. That's why no one sings God Bless The Child better than the greatest Diva that ever lived!
I definitely had a very weird relationship with Diana's voice but wow this video definitely shut me down those C#5's and D5's and they way sings those F5's as if she's just speaking them I was hoping you would use any of her vocal for "Ain't No Mountain" because I really think that some of the best songs she ever did "Vocally" great video btw :)
I watch a lot of UA-cam singers past and present with vocal coaches critiquing the artists Vocal ability! I don’t understand what the alpha/numerical rating means? Can anyone enlighten me? It’s like Algebra?? X
AMAZING! thank you for this compilation. I have been a fan since birth but this just shows how good Diana really is. She can sing anything and does it with such passion. AWESOME !!!
Thanks so much Angelfully2 for compiling this. Diana sounds amazing here. Diana is one of my favorite singers because her voice is so unique. You can go to countless churches and hear many singers with loud booming voices, but Diana has a one in a billion voice. I always felt Diana's voice is like a cool breeze.
I think Diana's biggest strength is that she doesn't over sing. I love Aretha and Patti, but I can only listen to them for an hour, tops. I can listen to Diana ALL day
YES! What a very necessary video! Diana not being able to sing definitely was one of the biggest lies told. I think she was unfairly compared to her contemporaries.
Her voice is melody. Ms. Ross is a singer who knows how to work what she has. Not a powerhouse, but she is certainly skilled and crafted. She has range, emotion and power but she does exactly what the song calls for her to do. she sings it. Her weapons of choice? Her phrasing and her diction. She is an underrated singer like Janet Jackson, for whom Ross paved the way for because they are not gospel-bred divas. But that does not mean they cannot sing. The lady is a legend and she is the best at what she does. Whitney and Patti both said it.
I'm still not a huge fan but I understand now where Beyonce draws from.. She's like a Tina and Diana mix ((female wise)) not trying to Diminish her but everyone draws from someone and it's obvious watching this
Maybe you forgot to post " God Bless America " ( live in Washington DC, 1993 ) and " My Man " ( Lady Sings The Blues medley from " Ahoy Arena, Rotterdam, 1994 ) ! Anyway, thanks for posting.
I didn't know Diana Ross could sing like that! But I think everyone said she couldn't sing because she came out in a time of extreme powerhouses. She had to be up against artists like Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, etc. Artist who blew every song they sung on. So I think that's why she didn't make the category of people who could "sing"
+Mario Moore “Ross had no true contemporary’s, for 20-30 years only artists Elvis and the Beatles had accumulated more #1 hits than Diana Ross had. BryanOQuinnTV the reason diane stands above her contemporaries and today's lot is that she is an original. she created the mold that nearly all the other (females) followed and she did it witout, MTV, internet, massive distribution networks available now. she also did it in the midst of racism that didn't allow the acceptance of black performers. in her 1970's prime she was untouchable.
***** you're correct Diane aged out of the USA market but one thing about Diane she never was stupid enough to put all her eggs in one basket. she remained popular throughout Europe, Asia, even South America.. Diane also has a catalog of hits that have stood the test of time and remain popular enough for her to still make millions touring in the USA whether American radio will play her new material or not.
Someone commented that Ross's voice stood out because it was pretty. But pretty voices come a dime a dozen. And she didn't make it the industry on a pretty voice alone: she had an Ace in the hole.
It's so easy to under estimate Diana because she sings F5 like it's nothing, not a hint of strain or tension. I never realised she could hit those notes! Someone like Sia sounds good because she frames the high notes well, while Diana does not really build up to it. I wish a song was written for her where she could really showcase her voice, imagine her singing Titanium or Chandelier!
This is what Berry saw in her..her superstar potential..she had that voice and style to be able to crossover nationalities. If Flo would've understood that, Mary too. Everyone just blamed Diana for everything.
For all women's at there, you don't have to show, or to shake your ass to be famous, because you never will, you have to own that skill, to produce super performance, if you don't own that, don't wasted your life, don't slow yourself going that low,.. PLEASE!!!!
People think you must be able to hit 17 different notes and do 1000 runs to be a good singer sadly. Diana Ross proves this is not the case another plus was her ability to enunciate I think due to her contemporaries she got the cant sing moniker. Yous should do one of these videos for Sade.
diana ross can sing well and can reach those notes. sometimes its hard for people to realize that since her voice is soft and doesn't have that power the way whitney or Patti does.
Many people can sing. What sets Diana Ross apart is the fact that her voice is pretty.
Pretty voices are a dime a dozen. Miss Ross didn't màke it in the industry on a pretty voice alone: she had "Ace" in the hole.
As is she, she was a very beautiful woman in her heydays with a gorgeous body!
Ya the whole image:the sound, the costumes, the staging, the face and figure- pretty and glam.
I love her soul music especially, because she doesn't have to scream, yell, and holler to be affective like her counterparts. Yet, her control, pitch, tonality, and emotiveness are spellbinding, while her versatility is unmatched, as she can add the right amount of soul without changing the material and making it out of a gospel song when it's not.

divas. This all began when she left the Supremes. The hate mongers blamed Diana
for the ultimate decline of the beloved trio. Still, it is NOT fair to Ms. Ross. Thanks for making this wonderful video proving what deep inside everyone already knows, that
Diana Ross' voice is an international treasure to be appreciated and enjoyed by the world
over and for generations to come.
I have always watched and loved her from my world
Impeccable control. So talented.
Yet, those other singers don't sound better than she.
her voice definitely Improved and got stronger in the later years of her career these are nice clips that show Diana can throw down when she wants too
Diana always rocks it especially on Mirror Mirror Swept Away, home, eaten alive, let's go up and Lovin n Givin (TGIFcd) n work that body. ....
Beautiful, clear, free, elegant, and pristine belting.
I always felt she was such a strong woman to go thru all the BS from so many misinformed envious hateful people and just kept it moving!!!!! Kudos to a real Legend Star icon trailblazer etc....this is one crazy industry if your strong enough and she was then and still is now.
The strong women are the ones who tolerated and/or had to put up with her b*******
Her voice is soooo beautiful I never realized it until these clips
Wonderful,Buautiful,Amazin' Miss Ross,The Queen of pop and ,soul......I'm so touched from Japan.a huge fan of her....
I love her candy coated voice.
Love DIANA. and delighted that my middle name is ROSS, Gorgeous and such an impeccable stylist.
These people lied when they said Diana Ross couldn't sing . She is amazing.
sh*t! her control and support is very enviable
A Super Star. that's all that needs saying.
In fact, after aretha got signed to Columbia she wouldn't any gospel music until the masterpiece album known as Amazing Grace She even did an extremely outstanding rendition of a classic opera song at the 1998 grammys which is regarded as one of greatest live performances of all time
@@classanddignity Very well said.
PERFECT! I couldn't add another word!
I definitely had a very weird relationship with Diana's voice but wow this video definitely shut me down those C#5's and D5's and they way sings those F5's as if she's just speaking them
I was hoping you would use any of her vocal for "Ain't No Mountain" because I really think that some of the best songs she ever did "Vocally" great video btw :)
I watch a lot of UA-cam singers past and present with vocal coaches critiquing the artists Vocal ability! I don’t understand what the alpha/numerical rating means? Can anyone enlighten me? It’s like Algebra?? X
Fabulous bravo 🙌 bravo Diva Diana Ross
DIVA she defines...Love ya Diana!!
love her voice
Simply Marvelous DIANA - GO GIRL WE LOVE U
AMAZING! thank you for this compilation.
Thank you for this. Pitch, tone and control still matter.
Really enjoyed this thank you 👍
So there you have it! Just sayin!!! Easy effortless understated vocal talent! Love her! So gorgeous to look at X
I've always said, you haven't heard Diana Ross until you've seen her perform live.
I have seen many of the great female singers, but there is only one Diana Ross! X
Superstar entertainer😘
DIANA ROSS THE BOSS🙌👑
She hs got soft sharp clear voice
❤❤❤
One of music legends
I think Diana's biggest strength is that she doesn't over sing. I love Aretha and Patti, but I can only listen to them for an hour, tops. I can listen to Diana ALL day
YES! What a very necessary video! Diana not being able to sing definitely was one of the biggest lies told. I think she was unfairly compared to her contemporaries.
I show this clip for all women's right there what is a right classic LADY, her name is:DIANA ROSS, .THE CLSSIC QUEEN OF SOUL!!!
Diana always rocks it especially on Mirror Mirror Swept Away, home, eaten alive, let's go up and Lovin n Givin (TGIFcd),work that body. ....
Amazing! Thanks for putting these together!
when I see her singing her eyes are not fixed one person I see her eyes follow through each and every She has said that is a way showing love
The B4 and C5 are Diana's notes! She really shines!
very good vid
there's so much more that could have been included.
such a brilliant and underrated vocalist!
I just love her ❤️
WOW!!! AMAZING!!!
The girl can saaaaang 💖💋💖💋💖
I loooooovvveeee that caption at the end. Best thing ive seen
One of the biggest lies ever told in music was Diana Ross couldn't sing ,when in truth she is one of the best singers in music
to have a life's success like hers and has been able to be O.K. with it .
those d5's damn
I love her
I'm still not a huge fan but I understand now where Beyonce draws from.. She's like a Tina and Diana mix ((female wise)) not trying to Diminish her but everyone draws from someone and it's obvious watching this
Yass
Maybe you forgot to post " God Bless America " ( live in Washington DC, 1993 ) and " My Man " ( Lady Sings The Blues medley from " Ahoy Arena, Rotterdam, 1994 ) ! Anyway, thanks for posting.
Good work : thanks !
+Mario Moore power is only one element of "good singing" tone is another and diane has one of the best.
+Mario Moore
“Ross had no true contemporary’s,
for 20-30 years only artists Elvis and the Beatles had accumulated more #1 hits
than Diana Ross had. Young Miss Ross opened doors not only for the ones that
came after her, but also for the ones that came right along with her; hence a
lot of the unfair resentment and false witness .Not until the mid-1980’s and
the arrival of artists like Madonna, Whitney, Mariah, Janet and later Beyoncé
who I personally also call the biggest star of her own generation … Diana has
always been the one to beat, She set the standard high; as far popularity,
image, notoriety and #1 pop recordings.
Moreover coming up in an era where you had to have talent …Diana Ross is
arguably the biggest star of her generation!”
~Bryan O’Quinn
BryanOQuinnTV the reason diane stands above her contemporaries and today's lot is that she is an original. she created the mold that nearly all the other (females) followed and she did it witout, MTV, internet, massive distribution networks available now. she also did it in the midst of racism that didn't allow the acceptance of black performers. in her 1970's prime she was untouchable.
***** agree, and her central park concert was the high point of her career.
That look she had performing mirror mirror looks like where they got the look for the disco one night only in dream girls from
Someone commented that Ross's voice stood out because it was pretty.
We all know she's not the best singer - not even an opera singer! We love her cause she can be so emotional...
Simple....Hard to beat that !
Let's just say ROss is worth 250.000.000.000 she's not worrying
Only one Ross.
This is what Berry saw in her..her superstar potential..she had that voice and style to be able to crossover nationalities. If Flo would've understood that, Mary too. Everyone just blamed Diana for everything.
What a classy lady?
For all women's at there, you don't have to show, or to shake your ass to be famous, because you never will, you have to own that skill, to produce super performance, if you don't own that, don't wasted your life, don't slow yourself going that low,.. PLEASE!!!!
What song is she singing starting at 0:31 secs 👀 ???
People think you must be able to hit 17 different notes and do 1000 runs to be a good singer sadly. Diana Ross proves this is not the case another plus was her ability to enunciate I think due to her contemporaries she got the cant sing moniker. Yous should do one of these videos for Sade.
diana ross can sing well and can reach those notes. sometimes its hard for people to realize that since her voice is soft and doesn't have that power the way whitney or Patti does.
What is the song called at 4:35
No One Gets The Prize
1:48 what is that song?
Mirror Mirror on Johnny Carson
Always thought she could sing.
What is the music of the B4 performance please ??
what's the last video where she's crying please ?
My man" from Billie Holiday soundtrack.
