Yeah and that's only an indicator of the network's strength. To get an actual idea of throughput you should test it with speedtest.net or some other such website...
+Evi4666 Yes. that was well put. Need to look at router to see the signal from the antenna from brothers. I would like know the distance and what DBI antenna's are used.
I understand what you are saying. what I am saying is if I unplug my repeater I only get one to two bars from my brothers house. and about 33% on my ps3. Not sure how to do all the vidioing on all that.
merrill mitchell Woah, latest reply ever! What I and these guys have been saying is that you have not measured the local antenna's signal strength. Just the drop off of signal when it is unplugged. To get an accurate idea of the atenna's strengh you should follow the directions posted above.
Nice setup there, some advice from a radio guy. If you havent done it already raise the panel antenna up to the same level of the dish. It will improve the signal quality of the link. Has to do with the fresnel zone of the signal. Second if you could move the router up to the dish or use Ubiquity Bullets as a bridge you will have less cable loss and a little more ethernet cable. These thinks will give you more fade margin and a more reliable link.
You are getting 5 bars because of the router in your house the 65 megabytes per second is from your router to the laptop you would have to do a speed test to see your true speed from the laptop. That is a good range for no more than just a router hook to it without a booster i had a small omni antenna hooked to a 10 watt and i was picking up wifi about 35 miles away straight as the crow flies but the signal was week i only had 2 bars. I was using a Alfa 1 watt hooked to about 30 feet of small cable to the 10 watt booster we with a 9dbi Omni antenna.
I don't think you are understanding what people are telling you. The 65mps is only the measured signal strength between YOUR Asus router and YOUR laptop, which are right down the hall from each other. It's measuring your own wireless network speed INSIDE your house, not your internet speed. Run some kind of internet speed test in order to measure the actual internet speed your are pulling from your brother's antenna. That's the only way to know.
Buy ubuiquiti antenna they are much better, because they use a ethernet cable. I learned about them a couple years later than this video. My mbps was much better and the signal was way more reliable.
You have full strength because you are connecting down the hall. you are connected at 65mbs to your device, it doesn't mean you have that connection to your brothers house or the internet. You should do a speed test to see how fast you can download. If its over a mbs then that is pretty darn good for that distance.
I have the same setup, besides the 2 grid dish antenna halves,i only have the "feedhorn".will it still work and if so will what will be my gain if it's used without the dish halves
65mbps appears to be the connection between your laptop and the asus router. Create a network or a ftp server on your brothers side and then transfer/download a file from each point with a download manager. This'll give an an accurate transfer speed. I'm guessing rain, winds and noise can effect the transfer rate(connection).
is their any problem in range or other with rt-n12 how much difference with your current model i just want to catch my neighbors (which i have ask him to use ) wifi which i can use through repeater now i am using usb adapter with directional antenna
The setup that works best is to have a router on a low channel (like 1) connected to the directional antenna. Then you come off that with a second router using another antenna on say, channel 11, and use that to connect to.
there are two linksys 1900 ac routers and one ubiquiti antenna. I would suggest buying a less expensive router and put your money in the ubiquiti antennas. I bought the expensive routers before I knew of ubiquiti. I have around 600.00 because the routers were 225.00 each. You can build it much cheaper. Make sure you use power over ethernet, or abreviated poe.You do want to make sure you get routers that are ac that do 2.4 and 5 gigahertz. Hope this helps. I am waiting on a new camera and I am going to do a new vidio. I don't know how to link them so I think I will call it long range wifi 2.
2:20 - this is wrong - the connection details being displayed on the laptop is just how strong the signal is between the laptop and the local repeater. If your brother was to turn his antenna off, it will still show that same full signal but you will not get a connection to the internet (or intranet, depending on the main purpose of the connection). If you turn off your repeater/antenna, you still may receive a signal DIRECTLY from you brothers antenna to your laptop (hence the meek connection) BUT it is highly unlikely your laptops wireless device will be capable of sending packets that far, even though it can probably receive them.
I found that WIFI extenders do just a good a job and no need for infrastructure and cables. And because you have such a huge yard, solar powered adapters that supply power to the routers outside should help. So from the house, normal internet from the wall, WPS the extenders and place them around the yard (on trees preferably), the higher the better the signal. Works fine for me and best part, no cables or expensive antennas. but i see this video was uploaded in 2012, so I hope youve advanced from many cables to single, from the wall only.
That's a long run of coax...your showing 5 bars of signal but how about noise? His radio may be higher powered but the stock store bought radio is around 10 - 50mW and long coax runs will cut your transmission rate on your side way back. As mentioned below you need to run a speed test and check the signal at the other end also. I prefer to use something like a Tranzeo radio for long distance hops. it eliminates the need for a coax cable and uses cat5. Its a radio with a 15dbi panel antenna all in one unit made for hops up to 50 miles apart. Another this as mentioned in a comment below is to get both antennas on the same plane. and make sure they are also on the same polarization. A quick fix for that is he can pitch his antenna up a little and you pitch yours down to line them up.
yes I know people go further with there systems, but this is as far as I needed to go. The reason why I shared my system is to help the average person that does not need to go 10-50-100 miles to pickup wifi signal. And I don't need to put my box wright at the antena because my signal strength is fine, and I don't want to build a box to keep it out of the weather. There is no need for the extra work.
that's the lan connection high gain parabolic to parabolic @4watts point to point has been proven through ubiquity adapter on a tower at 22.5 miles @19ms latency. After the interference point to point they where able to pull 12.5 mbps and transmit 12.5 mbps that is a low enough latency to play xbox fps games
Hello I had a question, please help If i use the Access Point TP-LINK TL-WA801ND_V1 Wireless N300 And use an outdoor parabolic dish instead of access point antennas, to send the Wifi 2400 MHz frequency, how far can I receive the frequency 100% without loss of quality ???
Hi I wouldn't use these dishes anymore. I changed to ubiquiti antennas that are POE. They use ethernet cable instead of coax. They are so much better, I went from max 9 mbps on a perfect day to 15-20 all the time. I just took all this down about 2 months ago and now I have T mobile home internet and I like it even more because I don't have to mess with anything. With T mobile home internet I get 50-60 all the time. Fastest I've seen is 104.
this is a nice setup but with that kinda setup is somewhat overkill with what you have you are going line of side and can reach distances over 2 miles as its line of site you have no objects in the way just a standered cantenna or rubber duckey 9dbi would work the only time you need worry if if you in the north or have a lot of iron in the ground then it interfers and you are luckey if you can get it with a big mast. love the setup tho its awesome and as I say bigger is alweese better
merrill mitchell Yep i am in the IT industry, Google for program called removewat run it as administrator. Restart the PC and it will be activated. Even Windows Update Works.
merrill mitchell it is possible if its pure LOS with no obstructions and your on a clean channel. I have experimented with sending broadband on several types of devices, antennas and methods. One such is completely out of the 2.4GHz band and on the 6.4GHz band. Another one is abit slower but uses the 900 MHz band but with 50 mW the rage is amazing but sacrifices speed
merrill mitchell il try and make a video soon :p im using 2x Alfa AWUS036Hv5 and 2x 24dBi parabolic directional antenna diecast (2.4Ghz) with notging is sight! lol i think the max range is like 10 kilometers maby more but good signa;l on 6 kilometer
Buy a ubiquiti antenna not this one, they are much stronger. This is the old way of doing it. The ubiquit is power over ethernet or p.o.e. It uses a ethernet cord and a power block instead of low loss coaxil cable. There is really no signal loss this way. I have changed mine to this since this video and it went from around a average of 6 upload and 2-3 upload to around 50 download and 15- upload just by changing the one antenna at my house. I didn't even change the one at my brothers house.
yes it is a rt n12 but now I use a amped wireless repeater in the house. My brothers is still the rtn12. You can use any brand you want. You just need one wireless router admitting signal and one repeater recieving signal. Make sure both of them have dual external antennas. Go to wifilink.com this is where I got my antennas and low loss cable.
I think everyone failed to see the 5 bars are from HIS ROUTER in HIS HOUSE, Not the signal from his brother. He would have to run a speedtest to see that.
WPGinterceptor That is the signal from is Asus Router in the house. He is retransmitting the signal from his brother's house through the small antenna of the ASUS. His laptop can't reach his brother's house, hence the reason for the Grid antenna on the top of his house.
electronics for fun I just used it to watch UA-cam and surf internet. I don't have any idea what was in it. I bought it at a local flea market. I still have it in the closet
C CRANE X MILE Wi Fi 'RECEIVER' ANTENNA: Looks like He has a C-Crane X Mile parabolic Wi Fi receiver antenna on his roof....... I have one and it is truly exceptional........ I live in a bus-sized motorhome, I use my landlord's WiFi, it is a is typical Charter cable to in-house WiFi router-based system. I am about 30 yards away receiving the signal through his 'metal' walled old double wide then through my RV to my laptop. ......Once I put a C - Crane X Mile antenna ( $129 comes with everything cable- driver disk etc....) I put it up and pointed it to his house I now have what seems like cable speed reception...My UA-cam live streaming is now rock solid, My UA-cam watching is now in HD with no more need to go down to 480 to keep the buffering smooth, no more interruptions or freezing......FREE WI FI : Also my C-Crane Xmike is now picking up dozens of locked and even unlocked WiFi signals and so If You want free internet and You are within a few miles of example a McDonald's or WalMart or _______ ? another free WiFi signal You can point it at the direction and it will pull in the WiFi signal....Note: This type of antenna receives in a 'direction' sort of like a flashlight beam can only see where it is pointed which is good because it focuses its reception in a 15 degree arc......cheers
Trade antenna's with your brother. his is most likely a 12 to 14 dbi gain . Transmit is key. yours is a 24 dbi gain. wattage gain on his output with your antenna will be much higher, almost to the point where you will only need the antennas that were supplied with your router to archive the results your getting now. if you take his flat panel antenna and put at your place and your antenna at his.... you will see a huge gain. example... satellite antennas that transmit tv signals are huge, our receiver dish antennas are not. same with gps. although a big receive antenna doesn't hurt either. good luck.
DUDE seriously i want to build this setup just tell me the your router model no it look's like asus RT-N12 AND YOU just plug one antenna to router and another to distribute in your house and without use of desktop
You can get the cable off amazon. But I wouldn't do that anymore. There are new antennas out that use a ethernet cable. They are made by ubiquiti. They are so much better. There is hardly 0 signal loss in ethernet cable. If you are going to do something like this I strongly suggest ubiquiti. I have updated most of my system to them. All except one. Sorry, I want to do a new video.
To obtain a true bandwidth from your brothers ISP, search for a online speed test and run. To obtain the BW from your brothers equipment to yours download iperf and test between a pc at your and is house.
See? I just knew you were lying when you said you weren't doi'n nothing Fishy, Talk about Radio activity.. And what's she cooking? I bet it's Fish!! :D
yes yes… at 2:19~ it shows no internet access.. bla bla bla. What I think is awesome is that he has created a network span of about a quarter mile wireless. That is awesome from any perspective! He has done it with standard wireless access points that we could get for way less $cost$ than what the guy at the computer store is trying to sell us! Heck I have a few of them laying in a closet not being used.
I thought the same thing... but the "No Internet Access" is for his IPv6 network. IPv4 is showing internet access. However, the fact that he has 5 bars and 65Mbps only indicates his connection between his laptop and the local repeater. Speed test comparison would be necessary to show how effective the setup is. Very cool stuff, regardless.
@@jamessmallwood7448 I can run everything in the house at one time with what new antennas. There is three of us here, so it is pretty good I think. I would just hook internet straight to my place. But it stops on the corner you see in the video and they won't run it to me.
You only showed us the strength of your router's internet output. Go to www.speedtest.net/ and record yourself doing this to find the actual speed of your internet.
let me tell you a couple of facts. Those BARS or speed you saw right there mean NOTHING. YOU NEED to run a few things to see how good your setup really is. i would do a ping test to 8.8.8.8 and one to your broadcasting router on the stump. then you need to go to speakeasy.net/speedtest or speedtest.net and measure your speed there. your router is broadcasting that from inside your house so its just an access point. of coarse its going to be strong. but that doesn't mean the signal coming in from the recieving antenna to the router is going to be strong. do a real speed test.
I know that I said the wrong thing with the signal strength. I was starting out with this and just wanted to help people. If I do a speed test it is around 27 download and upload varies around 10-15.
Is this legal? Isn't he connecting to the internet through a connection that he isn't paying for. If the cable company find out they could charge his brother and disconnect his brothers internet connection. And it's right out in the open. All that needs to happen is an installer sees those antennae and they will know.
If there is no password on the WiFi network, technically it is "public" and anybody can use it. If the WiFi is password protected, but the person paying for the service has the right to share it with whoever he pleases. No service provider is going to terminate WiFi because other people are using it.. If that were the case, places like coffee shops and other places with free WiFi wouldn't have the option available. lol Having no password on your WiFi is no different than it being there for public use.
At max I have had about 9-10 download and 5-6 upload. Most of the time it is around 3-7 and 1-3. It does vary alot. But all in all it gets the job done.
I think you that you don't know as much as you are implying. If you have something better prove it and share it with the rest of us. You don't have to, but if you are so smart then it won't be a problem to teach a idiot. Just saying! If you don't have anything worth my time in the next comment then I will not reply, have a life to live. Don't have time for sissy name calling. Not that it matters to you, I now. And my system is still working to this day, how about your system you built?
The bars of signal strength only indicate the repeater's signal, not the source...
***** I said before if I unplug the reapeater I get about one to two bars of strength here.

They are both ubiquiti POE antennas now. I had around 3 to 9 mbps with old antennas in video. Now I have around 20-25 mbps with new antennas.
Man I wish this guy made more videos. I would reallly like see the speed he is getting.

is there a difference if you disconnect your external antenna?
65mbps appears to be the connection between your laptop and the asus router. Create a network or a ftp server on your brothers side and then transfer/download a file from each point with a download manager. This'll give an an accurate transfer speed. Do you have a better setup, since mine sucks? If you do could you show me it? Everybody has to start somewhere, I bet you did.
Exactly. I am not suggesting that it doesn't work but only that the 5 by 5 he's getting is from his repeater not his brothers transmitter..
Thank you for comment on windows 7. I checked this out on youtube and got it fixed.
Are you the main source or your brothers. Who is broadcasting the wifi?
Nice Video!
Basically You unplugged one of the antennas of the router and it's in repeater mode?

what kind of speed do you get at your house vs the speed your brother gets at his house?
r u transmitting ur wifi or receiving?
Went from "Wow your camera is bad..." to "Woah, that's a damn nice camera!"
Actually we used this kind of camara to capture UFO videos... :P We often used blurry camera :)
thats not the signal of the antenna thats the signal of the in home router. u get full bars even if theres no good signal on the antenna.

This copy of Windows is not Genuine Windows 7...
haha thats funny, I didn't notice that until you pointed it out, pirated windows and borrowed wifi
Werner Visagie Yes I took my computer to geek squad and that is what it was like when I got it back.
merrill mitchell
Yep i am in the IT industry, Google for program called removewat run it as administrator. Restart the PC and it will be activated. Even Windows Update Works.
do u connect to signal ampilifer installed? How long is your cable from antenna to the repeater?
you can not run a amp on that, it is digital, not analog, it would distort the binary square waves.
yxhankun I shortened the cable as suggested, it is probably around 30 feet now.
thats cold blooded long
Awesome Antenna setup. Noticed your copy of Windows 7 was not Genuine... Hope you have fixed that. Is not very hard.
Not sure how to do that, but I will check it out now that you told me it is not hard. Thank You
Thanks nice video
pretty much same setup as me.. works great!
pretty long run of coax,...my advice is to put router undher the roff closer to antena....
im curenly sending wifi over a distance of like 6 kilometres using 2 derectional 1 watt wifi cards works perfect
Do u have a vidio of this it sounds cool.
merrill mitchell it is possible if its pure LOS with no obstructions and your on a clean channel. I have experimented with sending broadband on several types of devices, antennas and methods. Bull, bring that to the lab
luit niks that is awsome
What brand is the antenna
Buy a ubiquiti antenna not this one, they are much stronger. This is the old way of doing it. The ubiquit is power over ethernet or p.o.e. It uses a ethernet cord and a power block instead of low loss coaxil cable. There is really no signal loss this way. I have changed mine to this since this video and it went from around a average of 6 upload and 2-3 upload to around 50 download and 15- upload just by changing the one antenna at my house. I noticed too aha
If I turn off the reapeater in my house my brothers routers sends about 1-2 bars inside of my house.
how the hell are you using a powermac g4 in 2012? that computer was 13 years old when this video was made.

I put it up and pointed it to his house I now have what seems like cable speed reception...My UA-cam live streaming is now rock solid, My UA-cam watching is now in HD with no more need to go down to 480 to keep the buffering smooth, no more interruptions or freezing......FREE WI FI : Also my C-Crane Xmike is now picking up dozens of locked and even unlocked WiFi signals and so If You want free internet and You are within a few miles of example a McDonald's or WalMart or _______ ? another free WiFi signal You can point it at the direction and it will pull in the WiFi signal....Note: This type of antenna receives in a 'direction' sort of like a flashlight beam can only see where it is pointed which is good because it focuses its reception in a 15 degree arc......cheers
lol i could use my wifi in school HA :DDD
If there is nothing in the way like buildings and you would carry the antenna and Router, yes, you could
Trade antenna's with your brother. his is most likely a 12 to 14 dbi gain .
I have one. It's amazing.
Megabit*, the 5 bars are coming from YOUR router, not the one from your brother
hi can you tell me the model no of your router
dude this is cool.
You're Red John!
The whole system has changed and I am getting ready to do a new vidio.
can you post link? also, can you provide any info on the cables you used to connect that parabolic dish antenna to the access point in repeater mode?
You can get the cable off amazon. But I wouldn't do that anymore. There are new antennas out that use a ethernet cable. They are made by ubiquiti. They are so much better. There is hardly 0 signal loss in ethernet cable. If you are going to do something like this I strongly suggest ubiquiti. I have updated most of my system to them. All except one. Sorry, I want to do a new video.
To obtain a true bandwidth from your brothers ISP, search for a online speed test and run. To obtain the BW from your brothers equipment to yours download iperf and test between a pc at your and is house.
is that a Powermac G3?
Or G4
Or G4
Yes it doesn't work very well with just one end.
See? I just knew you were lying when you said you weren't doi'n nothing Fishy, Talk about Radio activity.. And what's she cooking? I bet it's Fish!! :D
so who is sending & who is receiving, i didn't understand the original source of the internet.
My brothers house is sending ans I receive it at my house and repeat it through the house. Sorry took so long,
ok thanks.
yes yes… at 2:19~ it shows no internet access.. bla bla bla.
1:03 dogs :D
daaaangerous
i installed wifi at your farm today! Ha! whats the chances!
See I told you everyone it was real.
this work great for a nas system running plex
Not sure what that is, but sounds cool.
@@merrillschannel you can stream movies over a network. :-0)
@@jamessmallwood7448 I can run everything in the house at one time with what new antennas. There is three of us here, so it is pretty good I think. I would just hook internet straight to my place. But it stops on the corner you see in the video and they won't run it to me.
@@merrillschannel yeah i see as your using as like a repeater , with the nas system you dont need the internet just same network.. great work
You only showed us the strength of your router's internet output. Go to www.speedtest.net/ and record yourself doing this to find the actual speed of your internet.
Yes thats what i was thinking
Hey Dude activate your Copy of Wndows with a Loader before you make a video.
let me tell you a couple of facts.
If I do a speed test it is around 27 download and upload varies around 10-15.
merrill mitchell what was your ping ?
Thanks for comment, everything I said was true.
hi can you tell me the model no of your router
name model router plizz

Is this legal? Isn't he connecting to the internet through a connection that he isn't paying for. If the cable company find out they could charge his brother and disconnect his brothers internet connection. And it's right out in the open. All that needs to happen is an installer sees those antennae and they will know.
If there is no password on the WiFi network, technically it is "public" and anybody can use it. If the WiFi is password protected, but the person paying for the service has the right to share it with whoever he pleases.
No service provider is going to terminate WiFi because other people are using it.. If that were the case, places like coffee shops and other places with free WiFi wouldn't have the option available. lol
Having no password on your WiFi is no different than it being there for public use.
Mbps per second
At max I have had about 9-10 download and 5-6 upload. Most of the time it is around 3-7 and 1-3. It does vary alot. But all in all it gets the job done.
Loss area bro..
What
USB - WEA43 ANTENNA]
I think you that you don't know as much as you are implying. If you have something better prove it and share it with the rest of us. You don't have to, but if you are so smart then it won't be a problem to teach a idiot. Just saying! If you don't have anything worth my time in the next comment then I will not reply, have a life to live. Don't have time for sissy name calling. Not that it matters to you, I now. And my system is still working to this day, how about your system you built?
