- In 1420, Portuguese explorers discovered the island of Madeira, virgin of any population. In the middle of the Atlantic, at the crossroads between Europe, Africa and America, Madeira becomes a favorite stop for travelers and a transit place for exotic plants brought back by sailors, missionaries and botanists. Madeira "the garden island", offers the visitor many parks, gardens, and other "quintas" - the great agricultural properties - which developed there in the nineteenth century, like the Quinta do Palheiro, created in 1804 by the count of Carvalhal.
