“Andy” was Reuben Anderson, my uncle. In addition to his duets with Joey (Joanne Dennis) he was also a solo artist, and known for the popular Jamaican holiday single, “It’s Christmas Time Again”. In addition to music, he was also a cartoonist for the Jamaican newspapers in the 1960s. He was talented, but very gentle and kind. Warms my heart to know his music is still well loved. Miss you, Uncle Les ❤.
Brilliant tune... Hate to see people slag off the Specials version... without their input.. tunes like this would be lost to millions... They never pretended or past off their covers as there own.. they just played the music they love and added to it.. both versions stand the test of time..
Love that tune on DIP, always look forward to it and listen the whole way thru whereas I always skip thru on repetitively heard TV theme tunes. The lyrics add even more to it.
Even so, the Blues (musically and emotionally) is undeniably a big theme in this song and in many songs over the history of ska. There's lots of pain in the harmonies and lyrics.
You're wondering now What to do Now you know This is the end You're wondering how You should pay For the way You misbehaved The curtain has fallen Now you're on your own You won't return again Forever you must spend You're wondering now What to do Now you know This is the end The curtain has fallen Now you're on your own You won't return again Forever you must spend You're wondering now What to do Now you know This is the end You're wondering how You should pay For the way You misbehaved
I was born in Jamaica but not raised there; but like the kids in this party, I attended many a party in London. We were not left with sitters, as at every house party there was a room for the kids, and we could dance with the adults if we wanted. The real fun was when the police joined in after they told us to turn down the music!
We used to go to sessions in Green Island down the road from Lucea with my parents. There was always dancing for the adults and teens and I would watch jealous from the door. But yes the sessions and the dancing was the way we Jamaicans celebrated life together. We left in 77 and I went to England in 78 for school and spent time in Brixton with my aunt. Always felt at home at the market there. Grew up listening to the 70's English Ska bands playing all the originals from my youth in JA. Miss my West Indian roots and plan to retire home.

i was surprised when i watched this, the way people are dancing and just enjoying themselves, it's amazing to watch and a bit nostalgic. the old times were the good times... ska rules
There is also a great version of this song done by the Skatalites in the mid-'90's. The gentleman shown at the mixing board at the end is Coxsone Dodd who wrote and produced the tune for Andy & Joey.
wdym? they use a different version with an electric guitar as their theme tune which im pretty sure was recorded specially for the show. they don't use this version do they?
So simple and yet so beautiful. Loved the Specials version, but when I learned the roots of ska, I grew to love this original even more. Totally digging the video of the dancers....memories of a far simpler time.... sigh.... Ska rules !!!
Sublime tune covered by The Skatelites and The Specials and now the theme music for the great BBC detective series 'Death In Paradise'. Love it and nothing like the original.
More (mostly ska) tracks from Reuben 'Andy' Anderson & Joanne 'Joey' Dennis by the same producer Coxsone Dodd: - I Want To Know - My Love Has Gone - My Love - You'll Never Know - I Know - Love Is Stronger - Love Your Company - Party Time - The Say - Wonder No More. Für den Produzenten Leslie Kong: - Cross My Heart - Have You Ever. Für Vincent Chin: - My Love und für Arthur Reid: - I Miss Your Love Hope, this helps!
Great song, great video. Whenever I watch old reels like this, I always wonder what became of the people enjoying themselves. The little girl getting down must be pushing 70 by now...
@gordonw01 I completely agree with you! I'm from Mexico and The Clash and The Specials introduced me to this style of music and the more I listen to it and explore its Jamaican roots the more I like it! Like you said it's music that no matter who you are or where you come from anybody can relate to and it can put a smile on your face even on those gloomy days
in the early days of rare soul nights, now called northern soul, top draw jamaican tunes were often played at the end of the night ,this allways topped the night off ,all singing along, time they started to do it again
_this is how people got down!_ mom would talk about people just getting fresh down at the dance hall, church bazaar, whatever and this was the way you did it. Grass was probably browner than the sunset but they all managed with the songs of one people
Rocksteady and reggie came a number of years after the ska movement. Ska was a Jamacian R&B if one might say. Regardless this moves my soul black or white.

And Death In Paradise was inspired in part by a real murder in 1943, in Barbados, which involved friends of ex-king Edward VIII. The murder was never solved, although the chief suspect was acquitted on a technicality; an American detective faked a critical piece of evidence. The suspect was the murdered Canadian billionaire's son-in-law, and he came from Guadeloupe. He divorced his third wife, the victim's 18 year-old daughter, a few years later, and died penniless in New York.
Du fragst dich jetzt. Sind alle glücklich? Ich bin es ,wenn ich das Lied höre. Das ist ein Text zum Nachdenken. Wie geht man mit dem Nächsten um. Immer miteinander, so ist die Devise. 🤝🤝👍

There is an unmistakable & (possibly disturbing) paradox between the uptempo music and the dark depressing lyrics of this song. It's fitting for a funeral! Little wonder that Amy Winehouse NEVER looked comfortable singing this tune. In the end, the lyrics were a self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts concerning her. JESUS is coming people!!! Get right and get ready!
Joey is my Grandma!!! I'm proud of her she is alive and well. She is next to me right now and asked me to search this up, I'm glad I did.

Spot on geezer
I love every version of this song. OG version, specials, Amy wine house…
I just hope the coxsone and/or these artists got paid what they deserve
UB40 did few covers of virtually unknown tunes & the royalties the original singer got saved his life as he was homeless & broke!!!
That's true.
So very true I respect anyone who covers ska such an underrated yet important music genre
Found this after hearing it on Death in Paradise. They use an instrumental version as the theme tune.
Love that tune on DIP, always look forward to it and listen the whole way thru whereas I always skip thru on repetitively heard TV theme tunes.
The lyrics add even more to it.
The Specials sent me here and I love it 💙
How can anyone not love ska? Sunshine music, happy sound. It always lifts my spirits no matter how bad things get.

Great story! Always funny when police join in with festivities. I've seen them at Notting Hill Carnival having as much fun as everyone else.
True!!!!!!!!
LOL at the police comment.
