Reading Brothers Karamazov probably saved my life. It was at a time in my life when I was pretty severely depressed but having Brothers Karamazov to read gave me a reason to stick around. Sorry if this is dark, I just think it is amazing how art can give meaning to life when it doesn't feel like there is much meaning.

@@eden-cr3bm I think so. It explores a lot of ideas about life and meaning. Some of my favorite characters are skeptics / atheists who are grappling with questions about morality and purpose. Even though Dostoevsky was a Christian, he does not offer a simplistic answer about life. He gives time and weight to secular ideas about meaning and suffering.

It is on my reading list for so long. I hope to get to it sometime this year. Have tried to read it multiple times but it has been too much for me. Like intellectually it felt like it was a level higher than I could appreciate. Since then I hope I have grown up enough to read difficult books and sit with that uncomfortable feeling.

I always get a small thrill every time I reread Jane Eyre because of the mention of Gateshead Hall, although it's a fictional building I am from the real Gateshead in the north of England, so I feel I have a small personal connection to my all time favourite book.

I have been in love with reading since I was a young girl. (I am 54 now). For some reason, in my adult years, my mindset was very stubborn, in that, I only wanted to read nonfiction books. For years, up until recently that is all I read. I came across this extraordinary book tube community and saw channels like yours discuss with such love and affection, the power of the classics…Victorian classics, to be specific. I always felt that the language and writing style of that time would be way over my head. Oh I was so wrong. I completely and utterly fell in love with the genre. I could go into so much detail on how ALL of these books changed my life. They open my mind to so many feelings I thought I never had. It is truly hard to explain. My next step, partly because of you, is to read Russian classics that I have been so afraid of. My first step in that endeavor was finishing Anna Karenina. Beyond words. Absolutely magnificent! The bottom line for me is that it’s not one book that changed my life, it is the plethora of books that are known as Victorian Classics…and I have just gotten started!😊. I am so excited for my new and continuing journey.😊😊😊

Charlotte bronte is my favorite author. When I read her prose I feel extreme intimacy and closeness to her. The first time I read Jane Eyre I felt a thousand small eruptions of emotional relief. It felt like everything I was missing emotionally from my parents and friends growing up was given to me from that book. I remember a conversation I had with my mom when I was around six. I was very upset and she sat next to me and explained the problem calmly and soothingly. That was the only time she did that. I feel the way I felt back then when I read Charlotte's prose. I also didnt suspect that language could be so beautiful and rich and convey such depth. A depth beyond everything I have known in real life interactions.

@@Mement0o, Yes, it is "TommyLovesEli" based on the book "Let the Right, Come In" (this would be "Låt den rätte komma in" rightly translated to English of that original Swedish title) known in this American world as "Let the Right One In" or the stupid American remake "Let Me In" where Chloë Grace Moretz was directed to act dumb and so the movie came out dumb, but the Swedish movie with English subtitles was so amazing that I read the book which thus ended my 8 year not reading streak. Tommy is not in either movie, but in the book he exists and though scared of the vampire he is also completely intrigued with a small vampire wanting to pay him money to suck his blood. Tommy burns down churches figuring it all must be lies based on what he now knows.

My favorite book is Lord of the Rings followed very closely by Jane Eyre. If not for Jane Eyre I probably would have never read LOTR or anything else. As a high school senior we were required to read a classic and write a paper on it. We were given a list from which we could chose our book. I for whatever reason (probably the title) chose Jane Eyre. My great love and passion for reading was awakened and I am forever grateful to Jane Eyre. I have re read it many times. Thanks Carolyn for introducing me to other books I probably would have not read without your encouragement. I have loved them all. Thanks for sharing your talent and love of books. Patricia

Honestly so moving watching this. Jane Eyre was the book that changed my life, for so many reasons. It got me back into reading after I dropped off as a teenager because YA fiction just wasn't for me. Just as with you, it taught me that classics were for me, as I'd previously held a belief I wouldn't be able to understand them. I was lonely as a teenager and Jane gave me strength: 'The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself.' I also saw the Jane Eyre ballet and loved it too!

Hi CarolynMarie, You are such a joy to watch, and listen to. Jane Eyre was one of the first classics I read. I have loved the Bronte sisters since I was very young. I am currently reading "The Tenant Of Wildfell Hall". The books that changed my life are "Alice In Wonderland", "To Kill A Mockingbird", "Great Expectations", "Fried Green Tomato's", "Rebecca",and too many more to mention ! I loved hearing how your Mom loved The Ballet so much, because my entire life Ballet has been a passion.I always wanted to be a Ballerina, but we never had the money for lessons. I watch youtubers who do ballet. A favorite Ballet memory for me ,is when my dear friend Susan took me to see "The Nutcracker". My friend is in heaven now,but every Christmas when I watch the many versions I own on DVD I always remember my friend Susan.Thank you for all your videos,I look forward to each one. Jane Austen has been my very dear friend since I read her for the first time when I was 16 yrs old (now 41 yrs). Can’t pick a particular book that changed my life but if I must I guess I’d say Pride and Prejudice as that was my first Austen. But I’ve read her through many seasons of my life- in utter joy and utter heartbreak. She was a particular comfort when my children were born- they were both very premature and each needed lengthy stays in NICU. I honestly felt Jane was reaching through those pages and giving me the biggest hug and support at those times. So lovely to hear you talk so passionately about Jane Eyre- I do love that book as well. I also enjoy the theatre and ballet. When I did my degree many moons ago I did Theatre Studies and Experience of Writing as equal majors. I also did dance and English literature modules as 2 minors in my first year. I dropped them to concentrate on my majors more but I really enjoyed my experience of studying those. I’m taking my children and my mum to see Pinocchio the ballet in February. I saw The Elves and the Shoemaker a few years back by this same company and they are fantastic- really entertaining for the children. Thank you for this video- I’ve really enjoyed it xx

I first read Jane Eyre in the early 90’s, at college and instantly fell in love with it, like no other novel that I’d read before or since! I have no idea how many times I’ve read or listened to it, but it’s been a lot and I still cry at the same bits each time! I hope you’ve managed to reread it since this video. Tuesdays with Morrie, 100 years of solitude, and The Little prince changed my life and made me passionate with literature and writing! And also the poets such as Emily Dickinson, Emily Brontë, and Rainer Maria Rilke!!
Reading classics was fun and life changing to me because of them! At first reading classics was just a cheap way of reading since their classics, but the more I read, the more I get to know that literature is a vast space for expression of ideas and thoughts(I am also a hobbyist artist so discovering Literature and writing extended my love for the arts!).

At the age of 14, I read 'The Electric kool-aid acid test' by Tom Wolfe, my first really grown-up book. Being English I have to admit most of it passed me by but it did make me want to read more books outside of the usual genres of the time (at school it was Dickens, Elliot, etc). Over 50 years later I still regard that book as the one that pushed me down the rabbit hole of world literature. Another book that has stayed with me since I first read it in 1982 is 'What a beautiful Sunday!' by Jorge Semprun, a book about his personal struggles with belief and his journey through his youth. It jumps between years but is easy to follow all the same.

Jane Eyre was my very first classic also! It holds such a special place in my heart. I was always so intimidated by classics. If I am being honest, I still sometimes feel unsure as I dive deeper into the world of classics. But now I look at it as a challenge, something fun! If it wasn't for the wonderful experience I had with charlotte Bronte's writing, who knows where I would be today. The book opened up a whole new world and significantly influenced me. I am currently applying to Emerson college to pursue their Writing, Literature, and Publishing degree. Without an ounce of doubt, I can say that without Jane Eyre, I would never have attempted it. I would be lost. Overall, Jane Eyre gave me confidence and sparked a passion within me when I needed it the most. It was my guide in a way. So I owe a lot to this book. Thank you for sharing your experience!

Just discovered you...such a beautiful channel. Jane Eyre is one of my all time favourites and I agree it was life changing. For me, I was just starting to dip my toes into classic literature when I read Jane Eyre in grade 10 or 11 and it completely solidified my love of classics. Another one that for me is in the life changing realm is Crime and Punishment. I love both Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy in general but Crime and Punishment had a particularly altering effect on me. My third mention (probably too recent to be considered a classic but is certainly destined to be) is Margaret Atwood's Alias Grace.. if you haven't read it yet I highly recommend it. The Netflix miniseries was beautifully done as well and definitely worth watching.

I loved this episode, thank you. I have four important classic books that changed my life. The first one was Little Women, my mom loved the book and suggested I get it at the library. I fell in love with Jo. I wanted to be just like her. She had such spirit and bravery, it really inspired me. (I have read all her sequels too!) The next book was The Great Gatzby, that came from seeing the Robert Redford and Mia Farrow movie adaption, I just fell in love the story. So we were at used book store and I bought the book, I was stunned how short it was, I fell even deeper in love with the story and the poet style of F. Scott Fitzgerald. I have read all of his novels and most of his short stories. (It inspired to keep trying to write, it took him several years to write this masterpiece. The next book Jane Eyre, the only version I had seen before was an old Orson Wells version which turned me off it, but then I saw the Timothy Dalton version in an English class and I really loved it. So I bought the novel and I just fell in love with Jane. She was so wonderful and brave and smart. I even took a Bronte Class at University. The last book was Pride And Prejudice. I came to it late, I was in my late 20's at the time I saw the series with Colin Firth I really loved it. I loved both Darcy and Lizzy, and I saw as I read it that Darcy wasn't really proud he was shy and a bit awkward. Which was adorable. I really dove deep and read not only all her books but all about her. Her letters, her England, her obscure works. I went a bit mad for while. I hope this wasn't too boring. Thanks again.

I am currently re-reading Jane Eyre (for the Brontë readalong) and I can now tell that the writting style of Charlotte Brontë is one of my favorite ! It's one of my favorite book as well and it also own a special place in my reader path as it was one of the first English classic I read in vo. When I was a teenager I thought I would never be able to read books in English and felt as invested in the story as in books written in my mothertongue, but Jane Eyre proved me I was wrong and I am so grateful for that.
The book that have had the biggest impact in my life was some collected poems written by Vladimir Mayakovsky. I first read it 6 years ago back when I was 13 years old, and the edition I owned happened to be a bilingual one. I didn't know the cyrillic alphabet at this time the the russian part looked very mysterious to me, but I love the translated version so much (it was in french btw), that I couldn't but regret the fact that I wasn't able to read it in Russina. Though the translation seemed great, I knew I was missing a lot of the rythm, etc So I basically told myself "Someday I want to be able to read Mayakovsky in vo." After that I started to learn Russian by myself, very slowly, but I loved it. Sometimes I stopped for months, but I always came back to it with pleasure, and it became a real hobby. 6 years later when the time of choosing my path came I had no clue of where to go and what to do with my life, so I just chose to do what I never get tired of and is always fun to me : learning Russian. And here I am freshly came from my province to Paris in order to study Russian at uni.
It's just unbelievable how a book can have such an impact. Funnier is the fact that I discovered Mayakovsky by listenning to a french rap singer who had a song titled "Svetlana et Maïakovski". If I had never known this music, who knows where would I betoday ! The unexpected way life unfolds is creepy and facsinating at the same time 🤯

If you enjoyed the Jane Eyre Ballet, I would recommend possibly Eugene Onegin. I saw the ball at the Royal Opera House in London, and it was such a moving experience, and I am sure in New York, it would be even more special. I also enjoy watching The Nutcracker ballet around Xmas time :)

I finally finished Jane Eyre and it was so beautifully written and so humbling. It is a very approachable classics read if anyone wants to attempt it and should. The book that change my life was A tree grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. I read this many many years ago. Although Francie was a very poor young girl she saved pennies she worked hard and aspired to better her life. Now who wouldn’t want to do the same? Yes that is the book that did it for me.

I found "Jane Eyre" first when I was 12. It was epic for me. My first adult classic Book. Love from the first sentence. I re-read this masterpiece every year in spring. Have read it in origin twice. As for other life changing books, In February it's time for "Anna Karenina", in May I re-read "Master and Margarita". "Jane Eyre" showed me the beauty and joy of reading adult classics. It is one of my very special intimate discoveries. But there is also "East of Eden", which has literally saved me. And the author of my life is F. M. Dostoevskiy. His novels is the place my heart lives in:)

For me, these are my life changing books: all the Harry Potters, the Picture of Dorian Gray, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe and Frankenstein.
Through the Harry Potter books, I was finally able to have true friends. Dorian Gray was the first classic I read and loved, Aristotle and Dante showed me not only the Latinx representation I didn’t even know I was missing but a mirror of my own close family life reflected in its pages. Frankenstein is the one I’ve read most recently and I adored it. It taught me my love of gothic literature.

it's hard to narrow down the books that changed my life! I think maybe White Fang to start when I was a child... Then The Great Gatsby as an adult.

Jane Eyre changed my life as well. I loved to read fictional novels for most of my life, and then I suddenly couldn’t find a single book that interested me. Every novel I would pick up seemed boring and I didn’t finish anything I would start reading. After that continuing to happen for a while, I gave up on reading for fun for about four years. Then someone gave me Jane Eyre for Christmas, and I decided to give it a try. I absolutely fell in love with the book and it became a new favorite for me. Then I started reading as many classic books as I could get my hands on. Now I am a voracious reader again and almost everything I read now is a classic book. Soon I will be finished reading all of the books written by the three Bronte (sorry I don’t have the proper accent over the e, my phone doesn’t have it on its keyboard) sisters, and they are three of my favorite authors. I am SO grateful to Jane Eyre for instilling back into me my love of reading, and a brand new love of classic literature!!! Thank you so much for sharing this story with us of how Jane Eyre changed your life. It was so cool to hear how this book changed your life too!

I was very struck by what you said about how the ballet spoke to you without words, the stills were amazing.
I feel so sure that you would be ‘spoken to’ by watching the 1935 film version of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ it’s such a sumptuous and magical experience, a treat for the eyes and ears and heart. I know that you already love this play. The full film is available now on UA-cam. It is so beautiful, I’ve seen many versions of this magical play performed. This one has for me left an imprint on my heart.

As a brazilian, my favorite book is probably not known in other countries, but I still want to share. The book that changed my life is "Luciola" by José de Alencar. This book is inspired by the Lady of the Camellias, but I would say it is a way better version of it. The protagonists have more depth and personality, the backstorie of Lúcia is really sad and emotional, I could fell every emotion she felt during the storie like I was living it. She grows a lot as the storie progress, Paulo also grows, both of them learn from each other and get a redemption arc, because they learn what is love, divine love. The book has a lot of catholicism, because it is the main religion here in Brazil, and you can see how Lúcia is transformed (her real name is not Lúcia, it is Maria da Glória, she changed it when she became a prostitute and only embraces her true name and identity in the end). The title of the book, Luciola, is a order of fireflies from the lampyridae family, and it is inspired by the protagonists name and storie, because the insects from this order usually live near mud, and yet they still shine their light in the dark, just like Lúcia. She may be a prostitute that lives a miserable life full of vices, but she still carries a pure heart inside of her soul, and she still has some morals that guides her to the path of salvation, wich is only achieved because she learns how to love Paulo and teaches him how to love in a pure and honest way. I love this book, and it makes me emotional every time I read, it's a classic of brazilian literature. I have no idea if there is any english translation, but at least I got to share this masterpiece here

Influential books for me: When I was a kid - Mr. Whiskers. There was one story where the animals came to life. It sparked my imagination. I recently found a copy of this children's read. Surfacing by Margret Atwood. Images of this woman drowning and finding a new life and understanding self. I need to re-read this one. The Social Construction of Reality by Berger and Luckmann. This is not a novel but sociology book about thinking, thought, and reality are social constructs and cultural perspectives of the world. I think everyone should read this book.
