Went to these guys live and it was absolutely phenomenal. This song live was just like the studio version as well. So talented

Clever? How so? I don’t mean to contradict you, just wondering if I missed something.
I GUESS you mean that overall, this seems a really romantic song about love, freedom and rebellion. That melody and Angus‘ lyrics are, well, what we see in the official video.
But then there’s Julia’s solo, and the „throw me a bone“- part.
So we got that guy who is attracted to a girl and vice versa. Probably in some kind of „White Trash“- context. And given the nature of his promises to her, she probably talked more than once about wanting to leave those „outskirts“.
Thing is, spending time with him is what keeps her there („you are really saving me“), and she doesn’t really mind that he spends his weekends shooting beer cans (just my guess), but she needs him to open up („trying to be your best friend“), and wonders if it’s all worth it.
When she sings „throw me a bone“, she’s asking him to give her a reason to stay with him. As in „fuck the daydreaming and posing, I want to know the real you“.
When he sings that line, it’s more of a plead to her to pressure him.
Also, that „Don’t be scared of what you don’t already know“- line suggests, that he’s trying to get her to have sex with him (his fake-promises about taking her to some kind of Chateau Marmont didn’t work).
(Of course, this isn’t essay-worthy, not in a mere comment section.)
@@nadinerick1182 Hi Nadine, it was a pleasure reading your response and interesting how differently we approach music. At the time (three years ago, three years of hearing this song of the radio/in the supermarket/etc.) I was incredibly impressed by how such a sonically simple song could be so enthralling and communicate really palpable energy. I remember it feeling really novel. So i don’t mean clever as in cryptic, because you’ve rightly pointed out that lyrically it’s quite explicit. Clever that the sound is so conversational, articulate and interesting without any need for frills whatsoever.
It’s lost some of its charm now from hearing it a thousand times, but i think it’s still beautiful.

I’d be surprised if he were pre-recorded. After all, there are loads of live and unplugged versions, he just sounds like that.
Mind, the microphone and whatever sound equipment is probably tuned a certain way, but that’s more akin to hitting the pedals of a piano.

There is definitely a backing track here that they are singing over. I’ve played both versions over each other and the timing is exactly the same. Never the less, it was a great performance but they are definitely using a backing track
This is live. Triple J don't allow miming besides the band did other songs in this set as well as covers and they sounded as good as this. The engineers at Triple J are among the best I've heard and I'm a trained audio engineer.

I thought that at first too, but I think because they are all singing, it creates that chorus effect.
Yeah you can tell when Julia sings its real but when angus does hes lip syncing. You can tell his part is a loop and no variance of voice inflections.
Playing to a backing track, although this still takes immense skill - firstly to write, produce and then perform.
