Especley in tokusatzu! I do not envy the guys playing the mo sters in stuff like Godzilla where they literally get explosions strapped in them. Heck in Godzilla VS Mothra the Godji suits hat was acually set on fire by accident and the scene is in the movie!
@@DrZuluGaming Honestly, I hated Dax for the same reason as Linkara: constant mugging. Plus he's not exactly being sympathetic towards Mack later on. Even though his intentions were in the right place.
The thing about Ronnie is it said she just won her seventh race in a row which means it wasn't the seveth time she raced but the seventh race she's won since her last loss. That actually is impressive.
Same. I can learn and relearn a lot about these guys while getting into some heated discussions like "Does Divatox deserve some respect for defeating the Turbo Rangers?"
What’s funny is, you know in-universe that’s totally a legitimate college course. You know the Science Of Zords is also a course probably a requirement for scientists in universe. It’d explain how Dr. Fairweather ended up in Lightspeed Rescue
OtakuboyT Yeah, that's true. Granted there's a lot of foes who look silly and less serious than they should be but style is minor compared to her achievements as a villain which was destroying their base and powers. Also credit to her brother who managed to steal the Turbo Zords and found the weakness of the Phantom Ranger.
Overdrive was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Basically it was the series that made Disney realize that Power Rangers wasnt an investment. In fact, it eventually would lead to Disney selling the series back to Saban in 2010. And yes, they sabotaged this, Jungle Fury and RPM by slashing the budget. When Disney bought Marvel, they had no need for Power Rangers and to this day, they still consider it a black sheep in their portfolio.
@@Rabbitlord108There are rangers who fought without their powers and I admire them for that. In the case of this team at least there were other rangers defending the Earth while they were powerless. I do think this team would have fought off without their powers if the other rangers weren’t around. They wouldn’t leave the Earth defenseless.
I grew up with Operation Overdrive, so when I heard Linkara didn't like it, I was a little disappointed. After rewatching it, I can definitely say that it's worse then what I remember, but it definitely had some really good elements, like the Team up, some of the villains, the connected episode plots, and most importantly, Spencer.
Honestly, the only saving grace of the Team Up episode, is the theme songs. Which isn't saying much, when they don't even bother using the Mighty Morphin theme for Adam. The rest of the Team up episodes(aka: Once a Ranger parts 1 and 2) are a complete train wreck IMO.
I actually really liked Overdrive, Sentai tropes have by extension always made PR weirdly humano-centric despite having a world full of wonders: Civilian powers helped in my opinion, but the Mercury Rangers whole deal and Mac's backstory & later arcs dove into "what is the measure of a non-human". I'm actually kind of disappointed they did a Pinocchio at the end- heck I'd be behind a ranger who instead of a curse, their really just a "monster" & still a ranger regardless.
@@nine_tails137 To be fair, the Mighty Morphin theme isn't owned by Disney, so there were some right's issues. As to why it was used in DIno Thunder and Once a Ranger is beyond me, but it's probably just Saban being a Prick.
Apparently they have Keeper Priorities: sacrifice the innocents dying in front of you right before your eyes for the "greater good" of maybe saving many more innocents from some possible/theoretical McGuffin-related mass genocide later. #priorities
I do like the IDEA of having two seperate big bads who at times fight each other and at other times work together...they just could've done a bit better than generic fire/ice dichtomy and give them more interesting personalities.
@MrWesdotcom i watched it over the Spring and really enjoyed it. The characters were enjoyable and likeable, a far cry from the jack asses on Overdrive. The different villain factions provided some interesting variations and surprises as you were never certain who would fighting the heroes this time around. The mission in the sentai is more clearly defined, they are basically recovering dangerous artifacts that could be used as weapons to harm people. Its a great show. I loved it. Definitely would watch it again before watching Overdrive.
SonicStantz It would've been nice to have THAT in Megaforce. Whether it be a class or the Armada and Warstar Empire referencing the past acts of villains. Like how Lewis had that idea of Malkor telling Creepox that humanity isn't that weak considering their attempts at defending their planet. Seriously, much like Sonic Mania and its fans, (we or I) need an anniversary season written by huge fans who are talented writers.
SonicStantz Same. I'd also consider calling up past actors in advance (at least one per season) for a possibly epic crossover. And maybe do some good continunity references left and right. I do want an anniversary season to have a major connection to the franchise's past. Hell, I would even consider doing Lewis's idea of the first Power Rangers and origin of the Morphing Grid. Granted Gokaiger is done with but still...
SonicStantz Well, it would be cool if Hawkins was Orion or a past character from Power Rangers was the Silver Ranger. Granted, there's availability and whether or not, they're still acting but nevertheless, I'm on board with an actual surprise of a character being the Silver Ranger.
Crazywhovian Nerd actually, technically alpha 7 was in the Astro megaship in forever red. The fact that he only had one line in that special, but was spoken by Richard Horowitz, the voice of the original Alpha 5.
The real tragedy of this series is that with all of its interesting concepts, Overdrive had the potential to be not only a good season, but a GREAT season. Unfortunately, so much of it is so poorly executed.... I think Overdrive is marginally better than Megaforce for actually having a story and reasonably well-defined characters, even if only Mack has an actual arc,
I also felt Overdrive at least had SOME effort into it and it has SOME substance such as Mac’s storyline, Tyson admittedly has a good backstory, Spencer’s definitely the mvp of this season, and I dunno if im in the minority but I kinda do like the overdrive suits.
How is it that anniversary seasons end up being terrible? Wild Force, Operation Overdrive, and (Super) Megaforce. Edit: for the record, I do not think Wild Force was bad, I'm just saying what people think.
@@estebangutierrez160 I don’t think wild force was terrible I mean it’s got it’s blemishes but it’s still got plenty to like. If nothing else it gave us the glorious reinforcements from the future crossover and the sacred forever red episode
@@estebangutierrez160 i may be bais towards wildforce since as a kid i loved animals and power rangers so it combining the two was like crystal meth but theres alot of good in wildforce master org and coles dynamic the zen aku arc was interesting so was the 6th ranger plus toxica and jindrax were both great additions and as mentioned before me forever red and reinforcement of the future are both Godly forever red still out does legendary battle. Also for what was a possible ending of power rangers its no count down to destruction but its still pretty good
I just wanna mention that back when the audio versions of this HOPR were the only thing around, that scene in the plane is one I had to visualize on my own. Watching the actual clips myself, it’s amazing how close I was to picturing the ENTIRE scene
+CharlieGM Yes, most if not all of these re uploads are remakes, reworded to cover some points that fans made in comments or to correct things that Lewis himself admitted he was wrong about. And if you look on this very video's comment section, on the comment by Ice Climber you will see that he feels this is worse than Megaforce
Yeah, as a season Megaforce is just hugely mediocre - there isn't enough story to actually be mad about. Overdrive fails because to me it's virtually unwatchable, whereas Megaforce is just lame and boring.
I find Megaforce worse simply because of how little they actually put into the anniversary and nostalgia segments... despite that being the entire point of the season in America and Japan. It's like no one wanted to work on it, or at least were happy working it, and that misery came off on screen.
While the characters' civilian powers are pretty generic, they are somewhat indicative of the characters themselves. Until embracing her intelligence, Rose felt invisible. Ronnie love to race, hence her superspeed. Dax is very active and is a bit of a thrillseeker and his super agility would help with that. Will notices and analyzes details in his line of work and gets super-sense to help in that. Mack's true nature aside, his super strength seems to match his desire to be a heroic adventurer.
KidSnivy96 They are both equally terrible in my opinion. But nothing is as literally defined as the epitome of terrible as Super Hero Taisen, Kamen Rider Taisen, Toqger vs. Kyoryuger and recently....Shuriken Sentai Ninninger.
imdb88 I agree. Sure, PROO has bad heroes, lackluster villains, poorly executed ideas but they ultimately tried to be different yet entertaining. Megaforce was generic and ultimately insulting (Super at least) to its franchise IMO.
imdb88 If only the producers, show-runners and editors had put in more effort into the execution and pacing of each episode of Operation Overdrive. Maybe lose those damn over-the-top Kalishplosions. We could have gotten something.
@@spartanx9293 I love the version that plays during battles, like when the Titan Megazord spreads its wings, or Nick's first morphed battle. But the regular theme itself..... mehhhhhhhh.
Currently rewatching your entire retrospective, couple things that came to mind: The theme song sucks, but the lyrics are hilariously ironic... It mentions at one point there are lives to be saved... Then in the second part of the episode the team is ready to let an entire city burn to death by the volcano eruption because they'd rather get the crown first... As for the "why not buy an army", this one I actually gotta disagree with... In some seasons we have seen characters propose or even push the idea of making a special army, with disasterous results... -Lightspeed Rescue tried to replace the rangers with robots who inmediatley malfunctioned and turned on the good guys. -Mr Collins bought a literal army with the Silver Guardians in Time Force and they constantly got their asses kicked... -SPD actually had an army but multiple SPD officers found no problem getting bribed to turn against the earth, some of wich included the A squad of Power Rangers. More than just the human factor, it's better to coordinate a smaller group of rangers, cuz then you don't risk any of them turning on the group so easily, it's basically the same principle as to why Ransik wouldn't release all mutants at once from prison in Time Force!
But with the first 2 examples, that's because they threw out the idea of refinement. It also doesn't help that all the Silver Guardians but Eric, at least after the Quantum Morpher, were normal humans with guns. That isn't exactly gonna work against most monsters. Lightspeed rescue's stupidity was not at least making the robots support for the rangers and maybe trying to refine their programming and defenses so crap like what happened before, doesn't happen again.
@@romdan7136 Even if they refined the robot rangers, the main point of the team, the robot rangers are using sci-fi elements from the literal 00s, they're only efficient so long as there's someone controlling them with the oversized remote, and besides, the biggest reason the organization is "lightspeed rescue" is because on top of defeating the demons, they need to save people, a scientist remote controlling soldiers won't be physically able to handle civilians with the same skill as human specialists. My point about the Silver Guardians still stands, sure, they're not rangers, but it does show that when you try to pit an army against a monster, they're just glorified cannon fodder, to the point even Eric ends up going out on the field by himself, that's why the main point of the powers and the rangers morphing is to do it only when monsters and foot soldiers show up.
@@Roler42 to advocate for the Silver Guardians in Time Force, they were still effective against the foot soldiers of the season. Honestly, I kinda wish Power Rangers actually used a military force more often. Against monsters they would be useless, but still having a backup force allied with the rangers to deal with the small fries so the rangers could focus on the bigger threat. It would also show that one, you don't need powers to do what's right to stand up to evil and two, that even ordinary people can be heroes. Just my thoughts on the matter...
21:22 race car drivers is not only about driving fast, it is about reaction speed, quick thinking, knowing the limits of your car and analyzing your surroundings.
Given the hindsight knowledge of what Mac is... his entire character arc makes about as much sense as running something through google translate a few dozen times. Andrew “lab accident short of being Lex Luthor” Hartford wants a kid, gets kid, and then ignores kid. How much was building Mac based on Andrew wanting to be a parent and how much was it giving Spencer something to do while Andrew was away? “Oh look, I have spent possibly thousands of hours and probably more money than many of you will ever have in a lifetime building a robot son, who quite possibly could be one of the most advanced artificial life forms ever... and now I will leave him with my butler.”
This was Hirohiko Araki’s worst idea for Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. I’m just glad he made Stardust Crusaders, instead of Power Rangers: Operation Hamon Overdrive.
So from what I can see so far, the Operation Overdrive Rangers are essentially what would have happened if the business guy from Time Force actually had his own Power Ranger team....sigh.
As for the Kalish-splosions, they were the doings of Mark Harris (who's still around in the Saban Brands era as of currently Ninja Steel). Kalish kept covering for him by blaming Koichi Sakamoto even though Sakamoto-san was in a EP position and wasn't involved in the fight choreography by that point.
kory stephens So, Harrisplosions is what these acts of terrible explosion gimmicks are they should be called. Kinda has a neat ring to it even though I like the Kalishsplosions branding of it. Well, he did try to cover his ass up for it.
@dnmstarsi I don't blame Harris, just Disney. They were only created because Disney refuses to have explosions happen in front of characters. Why? I have no fucking idea. They didn't have a problem with them occuring behind the Rangers. Maybe they felt they'd burn to death or be vaporised by a direct hit? Disney's attitude was also why the Kalishplosions vanished after RPM despite Harris staying on.
The sad thing is this season had some really good and interesting ideas, but they were executed horribly. But this was the time Disney was ashamed of owning PR and lost interest (and was trying to kill it, this really showed in RPM) (Not in the quality, but the season's treatment)
I loved RPM, but one thing I really hate about that season, is the shaky camera. Thus making the ground fights really frustrating to watch. The only time they don't shake the camera, is during the Megazord fights. It reminds me of the flashing lights in GaoGaiGar.
And now that Hasbro is suffering financially. I seriously think they're going to sell the rights to Power Rangers by the end of 2024 (Update. Welp. They've now sold the toy rights to play mates and are selling/have sold off the Lord Zed costume from Dino Fury & Cosmic Fury. MAN! They lost faith in Power Rangers faster than Disney. That's sad & frustrating)
Devon Osborne Same. At least Overdrive has some decent things and thanks to Lewis, something to laugh at and even mentally make a counter for all the times Dax said something stupid even though I could be watching other good seasons but w.e.
Devon Osborne True. Although I also remember Troy but for wrong and laughable reasons. Also Once a Ranger wasn't as bad as Legendary Battle. Still bad but still.
dnmstarsi oh my god yes! Legendary Battle was laughably bad. Once A Ranger didn't make the past rangers useless plot devices like Legendary Battle did. And yes, Troy was a laughably bad Red Ranger. Mack was a good character and had a personality.
I know this reply is late, but I always hate it when the Power Rangers version is so sloppily put together, it makes the Sentai version look better by comparison. Megaforce being a perfect example.
As an explanation for the suits from the sentai. The boukengers are basically from sgs. A non government funded organization who owns museums, help with rescue services later down the line, and find dangerous treasures to safeguard. This is why the insignia exists. The adventure motif also explains the shoulder pad and their helmets are supposed to resemble their vehicles as well (the source of their power being directly connected to their vehicles) this later becomes a major plotpoint down the line.
@@tshoemake5945 Yep. Dax Lo and he truly is one the most annoying rangers in the series. Even though some may find him funny and he only got a couple from me.
@@alankrumwiede2670 Same. I'll admit, I kinda found the "If Mack doesn't make it, can I have the Sonic Streaker?" moment kinda funny. It's dickish but it got a chuckle out of me plus hey, who wouldn't call dibs on lost ranger powers if this happened to us? LOL
Much as it pains me to say, the Corona aurora would explain why the UAE wanted to conquer earth so badly, and possibly explain why earthlings posed such a great challenge to beings that powerful where others were 'easily' conquered via mystic radiation.
Thing is though, there have been so many ancient and powerful artifacts introduced over the series that have been on earth the whole time (especially in the first few seasons of the show) that the Corona Aurora just feels like another to add to the pile, right near the Zeo Crystal, Dino Chargers, and the Sword of Light.
12:22 - Seriously, I gotta agree with Linkara & lets not forget the Silver Guardians are a thing! Seriously, the buy an army thing makes sense! Heck, the Silver Guardians probably still exist in some capacity & Hartford could probably work with them or create his own organization using them as a model! I mean, PR fans live for callbacks like that & it could even be used as set up for the team up! I like the idea of other groups like the Silver Guardians existing as they can still contribute by saving lives as it shows that the Rangers aren't the only group fighting to protect Earth! SPD & Time Force both introduced organizations with Ranger teams, so Hartford could have started his own possible precursor organization with the Operation Overdrive team!
i found this out about the monsters and villains, in the sentai (by some extension in PR) they were actually based on megazords and mecha from previous seasons, you can actually see it in the monsters if you look close enough, an example is Moltor being based on the orignal megazord
“Don’t put plot holes that even a child could see through!” And even better yet, don’t have one of your characters (Rose in this case) point out said plot hole.
Say Linkara i had a thought, after Ninja Steel finishes and you do a video on it, maybe you could do one video where you voice your thoughts on the suit designs of Sentai that weren't adapted ? (Like how you critique the suits in power rangers). Just a thought.
If he does do this, he could do the following for each team: Suit critique, Transformation/morpher critique, Mecha critique, Theme song critique, Battlelizer/Powerup critique
TheMonyarm he does at the beginning but after watching power ranger season after power ranger season the morphers, mechs, and battalizer and weapons start to blend together (as in they all usually look the same.) unless there something unique about them to go on he won’t talk about it.
This one was unironically my favorite because I was a kid and didn't care its designs looked good to me and I think it was my first season or it was mystic force or jungle fury
Honestly, this show could’ve been more bearable if it more revolved around finding artifacts from places of legend (Excalibur from ancient Britannia, the ancient ruins of Atlantis, Aztec temples, etc.) Hell, this would actually be reason for a crossover with Mystic Force cuz, you know, ancient civilizations equal magic stuff.
People find this season to be the worst but let's be honest, I'm one of the few that liked it in spite of all the problems that was in for the show. Weirdly enough, this show almost nearly cancelled Power Rangers a second time. The only reason why it never did was because Jetix Europe and Bandai asked Disney to give them another season... and another. That's why we got Jungle Fury (very underrated) and RPM (very awesome). So yeah, I can share your pain with it.
gotta admit, Overdrive was *my* favourite of the Power Rangers shows as a kid. Pretty sure I started with SPD, as that's the earliest one I have memories of, but I have many memories of jumping about watching Overdrive and loving the show.
Your videos about the Power Rangers(even ones you may not have watched as a kid) are so thorough! I have truly enjoyed watching them. Have a great new year, and keep up the awesome work!
I'm fine with a rap song for a Power Rangers theme despite my preference to rock and metal, but good God, was this song was dreadful, I can't even say this has a beat to call grating.
Like five fingers reaching for the sky in five ways, five heroes walking through the sun for five days? Fuck you song. I don't know how one could even sing that to sound good, just speaking it is embarrassing.
Hartford: No army can stop them! Silver Guardians: Are we a joke to you, we got two Red Rangers, who in turn can call one full team of six rangers, TWO if you count the Wild Force Rangers because I'm pretty sure that Princess Shelia would allow the Wild Force team to get their morphers back
Funny thing about the team comp in overdrive. In boukenger at least their team composition made sense, since outside of natsuki which likely tagged along because they primarily wanted black. Bouken red is a legendary treasure hunter called the immortal fang, bouken blue is an extremely infamous spy, bouken pink is ex militia who got recruited by bouken red with black and yellow joining around the same time, likely because of bouken red wanted black, and let yellow tag along which turned out to be crucial down the line. Edit: forgot to mention, but the reason boukenger had members recruited by the immortal fang himself is becausetgeir power source comes from planet endangering artifacts. So only very trustworthy members can have access for it.
Not really sure Why, but I really liked Linkara's mini rant about Stuntmen 5:43 It didn't seem nessisary, but for some reason I just enjoyed that part! (Probably one of the only positive things that Could be said about Overdrive! Lol)
There are just somethings he needs to get off his chest. Someone we expect, others are personal and given his observation about the chair, it wouldn't hurt us to know how much we shouldn't mess with stuntmen even if they're Dax Lo levels of annoying.
fun fact the monsters of gogo sentai boukenger and by extention operation overdrive are based in mechas (megazords) from previous seasons that includes the villains except for flurius and his stupid assistant who are original to this show, however the final form that flurius takes is also based on a previous sentai mecha since its also the final form that the final boss of boukenger (and flurious's sentai counterpart ) takes for the final episode, albeit using 2 different items
Glad to see this review, it’s actually become a bit of a holiday tradition for me to watch these reviews when they come out. I was kinda worried there wasn’t going to be one this year since Ninja Steel is still going.
I didn't hate Operation Overdrive for bad style, appearance, presentation, and/or storytelling, but when you compared Flurious and Moltor to the Miser Bros, I thought that was hilarious!
To anyone wondering about the Sentai, in the Sentai, the chillers were actually golems that could fling fire from their scythes, tyzon was only used in a filler episode, the treasure hunting was part of a job to find dangerous treasures to protect people from them, it was the 30th anniversary of Sentai and had a large number of references. The suits made sense as they were basically working in a situation that would need humans to see them for safety, and the theme song was actually good
Just so people know Samuel Benta came out explaining about the banner thing, he had taken them so he could autograph them for the staffing committee and was going to return them after going out for drinks with his Co-stars, leaving them in room he thought was inaccessible to fans but when he came back the room was filled with fans with the posters gone. As for why he hadn't said anything for years I don't know
9:07 I remember waiting years for Linkara to cover this series back in the day. Partly because I knew he wasn’t gonna hold back and pull no punches, but I was hoping for one particular joke at the expense of Flurious and Moltar…. and Linkara didn’t disappoint.
112:46 Fun fact they actually play this on Guantanamo Bay to the prisoners, and I would much rather listen to Killing In The Name (which is a song they actually play to the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay) than this. 2:56 Wow, Linkara you were way too easy on the Operation Overdrive theme. (And that's only half a joke).
Oh god here it is! Yep, this season, every time I try to watch this season I just give up halfway due to the combination of bad acting, unfunny jokes and terrible sound effects played in the wrong time. Honestly I believe that this season is worse then Samurai and Megaforce, because at the very least I was able to get through Samurai and Megaforce. Overdrive not so much. May the power protect us all indeed and of course, SHUT YOUR PIE-HOLE DAX!!!
The problem with megaforce is just how insultingly incompetent and uncaring the people behind the scenes were. You could tell no one wanted to work on that season, and it comes off badly in the show. This season at least has some bright spots, someone cared... someone not very good mind you, but you can tell the difference! The main character's arc is good, and the ensemble cast of villains is well done... I can't list 1 thing from Megaforce that was well done. 2 is more than 0. XD
A lot of staff were actually interested in doing Megaforce, but were heavily demoralized by Jonathan Tzachor, who shot down their story ideas in favor of just shoving in more fight scenes.
1TrulyMad I hope that we actually do get a good special in celebrating the franchise's 25th anniversary of Power Rangers, this year. I don't care if it is an episode in Hyperforce or at Power Morphicon or in an graphic novel made by Boom! Studios. *I WANT SOMETHING BETTER AND DEMAND BETTER!!!*
shadowlinkbds I can agree with that. Megaforce is understandably worse (for me at least) but the anniversary stuff was the main cause of it and S1 wasn't too bad, just generic and average at best. Here, I give them points for effort with the multiple teams, treasure hunts and a few others but the execution was poor.
Megaforce is way worse honestly. At lease this one has a couple pros... that one has none. Well maybe the main theme, but Samurai used the same one and did it first, so no points. :P
shadowlinkbds I say Megaforce and Super Megaforce are the absolute worst because they actually showed that they just did not give a shit about celebrating the history of the franchise or honoring and respecting the past seasons as well as establishing some real continuity with the past seasons.
Ooh boy. From the sound of it, Will's actor must've been a really awful person. Either that, or he ended up getting into some legal trouble like what ultimately befall Cole's actor.
How I would've written Overdrive: Have a bit more foreshadowing to the Mac is a robot reveal (maybe mention he never knew his mom, have him act a bit screwy when he's around magnets, have a monster notice he doesn't bleed like a human should etc). Have someone call out Dax on his bullshit and have one of the Rangers tell him very bluntly, "THIS IS NOT A MOVIE SET, YOU IDIOT! EITHER GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME OR OUR WORLD AND EVERYONE ON IT IS DOOMED!" Then in a later episode, Dax notices a family caught in the crossfire and that's when he finally gets it into his thick skull that there is a lot more at stake. Have monsters based on the locations they visit and more unique areas (think Power Rangers but with Ducktales-style locales). Really dive into the concept of the show. It's basically Power Rangers by way of Indiana Jones and other Pulp Fiction adventures. EMBRACE IT GODDAMMIT!
I actually remember liking Operation Overdrive as a kid.....looking back on it now, Operation Overdrive wasn't as good as I remember, I actually did kind of enjoy the villains though, the Fearcats and Kamdor being my favorites...I also did kind of like the theme song, but it was a bit too weird for me......Operation Overdrive was just kinda underwhelming for me, especially as a follow-up to my favorite incarnation, Mystic Force... As a side note, the reason Mystic Force is my favorite incarnation of the Power Rangers is mostly for nostalgic reasons, even though the first thing Power Ranger related that I had watched was a weird crossover between the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers In Space....the first thing I watched consistently was Mystic Force, I loved that the rangers used MAGIC POWERS rather than just entirely high-tech equipment (Also, I really wanted those flying broomsticks they had, it was pretty awesome), mostly because I'm a sucker for magical fantasy stuff, especially when I was a kid. Afterwards I watched some of the incarnations that came a bit before it like SPD, Dino Thunder, and Ninja Storm (this was during that time when Toon Disney/Jetix was still a thing and they often showed A LOT of Power Rangers), which I also liked but I still wanted something with more of the magical elements like Mystic Force, the closest thing I got to it was Jungle Fury with the animal spirit powers (it was still pretty cool though)...I'm still waiting for the day that they make another Power Rangers incarnation that uses magic..... WOW.....this got kinda long.....I apologize for my long paragraph of fangirling over Mystic Force.....
Just a question that's always been burning on my mind ever since the Mercury Ranger made the sound cue way more obvious...does Overdrive's morphing sequence straight up steal a Star Wars blaster sound?
Operation Overdrive was my first so I'm a bit biased. But Jesus Christ looking back it was a cash grab and really only appealed to very young kids. That's how low we have gotten, from a series for everyone to a mindless pile of garbage for babies
Like you said, opinions, but I really don't see anything wrong with the Ranger suits. I think the chrome helps bring them together. I especially like the weapons this season, particularly Will's hammer and Ronnie's... scoop gloves? They're about the only thing from this season I like, design-wise. Funny thing, when you were talking about how the Zords all blend together, I actually thought this one looked kind of unique, with it's X-Borg style head - until the helmet went on and it suddenly looked like every other Megazord.
I have a question. How did he get access to the Morphin’ Grid? No seriously, basically every other series has a reason (though I can’t remember all of them). Like...Zordon granted the access, Tommy’s a former Ranger, future technology, a deep spiritual connection with the world as a whole (most Ninja-based seasons), or magic. But this? Did the Solaris Knight give him access? Did the un-gemmed Corona Aurora? Did he BUY his way in?
A few find a way. After all, the government found a way to tap into the Grid and create their own Rangers so it's possible that Hartford had connections to people who can help him tap into the Grid.
Eh, still better than Megaforce. This season at least seemed to have effort in it. And the acting is better than Ninja Steel by far. I actually kinda like the theme song.
And yet.... Boukenger's Theme is amazing... I admit Overdrive's theme sucks so badly that I just replace it with Boukenger's (Or Treasure Force Korean's Dub of Boukenger's OP)
Techniqually Mystic force had an episode called The Pink Pirate, so not all the episodes were two word titles in mystic force, still applies to most of it though.
Hey, anyone else notice that the Italian Grand Prix isn't an F1 race at Monza and is instead a NASCAR race in Bumfuck Nowhere? And that they later use the exact same footage for the Monaco Grand Prix? Which is a GODDAMN STREET CIRCUIT? Man, and I thought Super Megaforce got lazy.
6:33, as a racing nerd i can explain. First thats not the right track. The Italian gp is usually held at Monza, and that too me looks like Brans Hatch which is in England. Second, the announcer. It could be taken from live commentary. Third, 7 wins in a row and wining the championship. We dont know how many rounds into this championship they are. Plus if you win 7 in a row then they might as well give you the title.
"Stunt fighting isn't like real fighting" As if stunt men have to learn fake martial arts lmao The only major difference is stunt fighters know how to look like they took a hit or look like they hit you without making contact
My personal theory as to why there’s only 5 and later 6 Rangers for this season is because maybe the Ranger technology is really expensive to create especially since this is all privately funded by just one guy. One morpher could cost, for all we know, over a $1,000,000 to just create alone along with all the additional items, tools and accessories associated with each ranger for both combat and practicality like the multiple amount of Zords, weapons, and vehicles we see on the show. Not to mention how Hartford has access to the Morphin Grid, maybe he bought technology from the wreckage after the events Countdown to Destruction or maybe he has ties to Tommy after the events of DinoThunder, take your pick, the Sentinel Knight may have guided him or something. The operation may also have to take into account the amount of expenses for travelling around the world and stuff so maybe an army would do well but the ranger technology is just far superior maybe
Spencer the butler is way too good for this show. He’s got some really witty dialogue and his pep talk with Mac is really heartfelt
I agree but each season needs at least one thing good and likable and we have the butler. And sometimes Rose and thinking about the show's concept.
honestly I thought the robot twist was genuinely well-done. Of course it had to be used in THIS season.

0:57 “Operation Overdrive is by far the worst season of Power Rangers that I’ve seen so far...”
And then, Super Megaforce happened.
@Games I'd disagree but I watched it when I was 10 so I'm biased
I wil say this *SPOILER ALERT*
At least they still kept fighting without their powers. Unlike this team.
Nah, according to him, they’re still better, if only barely.
Operation Overdrive can be summed up in three words: "SHUT UP, DAX!"
Matt Thornton Also five words: "You're rich! Buy an army!"
Megafarce : There's a simple explanation for that
What about: "Too much Pink energy is dangerous"? What? Makes about much sense as anything else.

9...11... oh what a coincidence
Same although I thought it was gonna be shortened down (unless that song is public domain).
But what I don't mind shortened was the Overdrive theme.
@@SpectacularSpiderFan That honestly makes sense, but it's still a missed opportunity IMO.

The Sentai this show is based on, Boukenger is actually ALOT better than Overdrive

SonicStantz Maybe...
SonicStantz Well, it would be cool if Hawkins was Orion or a past character from Power Rangers was the Silver Ranger. Granted, there's availability and whether or not, they're still acting but nevertheless, I'm on board with an actual surprise of a character being the Silver Ranger.
Rap themes CAN work. Three great rap themes that come to mind are Danny phantom, boondocks, and samurai champloo ,. This is not not a great rap theme.

I think Overdrive is marginally better than Megaforce for actually having a story and reasonably well-defined characters, even if only Mack has an actual arc,
It's sad when one bad show, makes another one look good by comparison.

Oh heck, it's a remake? And he STILL thinks its worse than Megaforce?
... I mean, fair point. This season was notoriously awful.
I still don't know if I hate incompetent bad (Overdrive) or lazy bad (Super Megaforce) more.

Look up "operation overdrive demo theme". That one is much worse.
Currently rewatching your entire retrospective, couple things that came to mind:
The theme song sucks, but the lyrics are hilariously ironic...
I don’t like operation overdrive but I still think the theme song slaps even if the lyrics don’t make sense

Private Eye - En Retrospectiva Ohhh.... You should respect yourself more. What would your parents think?
The sad thing is this season had some really good and interesting ideas, but they were executed horribly. But this was the time Disney was ashamed of owning PR and lost interest (and was trying to kill it, this really showed in RPM) (Not in the quality, but the season's treatment)
I loved RPM, but one thing I really hate about that season,
is the shaky camera. Thus making the ground fights really frustrating to watch.
The only time they don't shake the camera, is during the Megazord fights.

As an explanation for the suits from the sentai. The boukengers are basically from sgs.
I actually said out loud "shut up Dax" in my rewatch of Operation Overdrive just about every time he opened his mouth.

Carl Rood that’s what I thought... guess they writers never watched any racing....
i found this out about the monsters and villains, in the sentai (by some extension in PR) they were actually based on megazords and mecha from previous seasons, you can actually see it in the monsters if you look close enough, an example is Moltor being based on the orignal megazord

TheMonyarm I agree, particularly dairanger. Which would have been an awesome season
If he does do this, he could do the following for each team:
Suit critique,
Transformation/morpher critique,
Mecha critique,
Theme song critique,
Battlelizer/Powerup critique
I Think he said he will but i think you have to donate but not sure if he said that or just remembering wrong
TheMonyarm the problem with that is he doesn’t watch the sentai and doesn’t focus on it. This serious is strictly about power rangers.
TheMonyarm he does at the beginning but after watching power ranger season after power ranger season the morphers, mechs, and battalizer and weapons start to blend together (as in they all usually look the same.) unless there something unique about them to go on he won’t talk about it.
6:03 hm... idea for a power rangers episode. They have to fight off a bunch of possessed stuntmen.
Nicodemus Edwards That could work for a Dax episode. Add in some decent character development and it could be one of the better episodes of Overdrive.
Didn’t that actually happen though dax wanted to audition for a film but he wasn’t allowed to due to his ranger duties but he went anyway
That would be meta as shit
This one was unironically my favorite because I was a kid and didn't care its designs looked good to me and I think it was my first season or it was mystic force or jungle fury
Honestly, this show could’ve been more bearable if it more revolved around finding artifacts from places of legend (Excalibur from ancient Britannia, the ancient ruins of Atlantis, Aztec temples, etc.) Hell, this would actually be reason for a crossover with Mystic Force cuz, you know, ancient civilizations equal magic stuff.
Basically going more of an Uncharted route with it.
Even the mystic force rangers are far better and far more decent characters than most of the overdrive rangers.
Ryan Robotham Instrumental is okay-ish but yeah, that song SUCKED.
Like five fingers reaching for the sky in five ways, five heroes walking through the sun for five days?
Fuck you song. I don't know how one could even sing that to sound good, just speaking it is embarrassing.
I think its literally the lyrics that suck, its probably fine as an instrumental song.
FIVE EVIL RANGERS ARE THE SAME FIVE STONES!
Ryan Robotham I prefer they use a rap song as an insert song in Power Rangers. But not as an actual opening theme song of Power Rangers.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed the comparison of the villains to Snow Miser and Heat Miser 🤣
As promised, SHUT UP DAX!
Not really sure Why, but I really liked Linkara's mini rant about Stuntmen 5:43
It didn't seem nessisary, but for some reason I just enjoyed that part!
The suits made sense as they were basically working in a situation that would need humans to see them for safety, and the theme song was actually good
Wasn't the 30th anniversary special about Boukenger fighting the other teams?
@@game84cube no, I think that’s a different season
Just so people know Samuel Benta came out explaining about the banner thing, he had taken them so he could autograph them for the staffing committee and was going to return them after going out for drinks with his Co-stars, leaving them in room he thought was inaccessible to fans but when he came back the room was filled with fans with the posters gone. As for why he hadn't said anything for years I don't know
Probably embarrassment over his mistake.
SO glad to see more of these videos. this series is awesome and I hate the shit he's gone through to get them out
Watched this on Netflix not too long ago, was so thankful for the 'Skip Intro' feature. Also wish that Spencer would come back later
5:55 Are you kidding? The Lord Of The Rings stunt crew was so good at there job the cast and crew actually wanted to make a Stuntman Cut of the film!
Roll on Jungle Fury, for Linkara's sake. At least this series resulted in a good HOPR
Pat Rex 11, is the Jungle Fury HOPR not available on his website anymore? I thought it still was.
I just checked, it's unavailable since VidMe shut down
9:07 I remember waiting years for Linkara to cover this series back in the day. Partly because I knew he wasn’t gonna hold back and pull no punches, but I was hoping for one particular joke at the expense of Flurious and Moltar…. and Linkara didn’t disappoint.
1:02 - Wow. Worse than TURBO??!!!
That's amazing!
- ToonMobb :-)
hey Linkara just want to thank you for doing History of Power Ranger and hope you have a happy New Years and also your Fourze Review was SOOOO GOOOD
1:17 the bird sticker is a bit loose...I mean the high-tech visor!
Since when were the visors stickers?
9:10 and now I can never think of these two without that song, thank you for that!
*shakes in place*
OH BOY, IT'S HAPPENING
XD
A lot of staff were actually interested in doing Megaforce, but were heavily demoralized by Jonathan Tzachor, who shot down their story ideas in favor of just shoving in more fight scenes.
planescaped: I agree, yes Overdrive is bad but it's not a kick to the gut like Megaforce was.
Darth_ Madara At least Ninja Storm has some redeeming qualities as opposed to Megaforce and Super Megaforce.
Oh boy. This one. By far the worst of the power rangers series. (Well Megaforce is just as bad too.)
shadowlinkbds I can agree with that.
shadowlinkbds I say Megaforce and Super Megaforce are the absolute worst because they actually showed that they just did not give a shit about celebrating the history of the franchise or honoring and respecting the past seasons as well as establishing some real continuity with the past seasons.
dnmstarsi I agree. Good ideas, but bad execution.
shadowlinkbds Megaforce was indeed bad but this was worse especially because of the god awful opening.
Ooh boy. From the sound of it, Will's actor must've been a really awful person. Either that, or he ended up getting into some legal trouble like what ultimately befall Cole's actor.
How I would've written Overdrive:
Have a bit more foreshadowing to the Mac is a robot reveal (maybe mention he never knew his mom, have him act a bit screwy when he's around magnets, have a monster notice he doesn't bleed like a human should etc).
Still not as weird as the sound being used in the dub of Yugioh DM when Barrel Dragon used its effect.
My least favorite part of the civilian powers is that they don’t keep them when they morph if they have powers keep them in their most powerful forms
Linkara thanks soo much for uploading this. After vimeo discontinued i was so upset
Operation Overdrive was my first so I'm a bit biased. But Jesus Christ looking back it was a cash grab and really only appealed to very young kids. That's how low we have gotten, from a series for everyone to a mindless pile of garbage for babies
this season 's name should be power rangers in the search for infinity stones !!
More explosions than times "fuck" said in The Commitments. More explosions than "yeah" said on White Zombie's Astro Creep 2000.
Harold more explosions than all the times Owen Wilson has said “wow” in all his movies combined.
Harold more explosions than all the times Owen Wilson has said “wow” in all his movies combined.
5:15
Actually, seeing how common giant monsters are, forcing people to work there way through a gauntlet makes sense.
Eh, still better than Megaforce. This season at least seemed to have effort in it. And the acting is better than Ninja Steel by far.
I actually kinda like the theme song.
Hmmmm nah. Still think that award goes to the RPM theme song. It's basically their morphing call plus some random line about teamwork.
@@FixTheWi-Fi
Yeah but despite that the RPM theme is still kickass. Fits in with the "apocalyptic" setting
@@FixTheWi-Fi The Instrumental still Rocks tho.
The plane scene should’ve had him saying, “Talk about low budget flights. No food or movies? I’m outta here! I like running better!”
It seems like Dax was basically supposed to be Overdrive's version of Bridge. But it just didn't work
And yet.... Boukenger's Theme is amazing... I admit Overdrive's theme sucks so badly that I just replace it with Boukenger's (Or Treasure Force Korean's Dub of Boukenger's OP)
TheGamingRodent I tend to play the Boukenger theme a few times whenever I watch an episode of Overdrive.
I just finished bingeing this season along with Boukenger and honestly this season was not that bad. It was a total mess, but a fun mess.
Techniqually Mystic force had an episode called The Pink Pirate, so not all the episodes were two word titles in mystic force, still applies to most of it though.
And also “The Snow Prince”.
If Wasserman wrote the rap theme we all know it would be straight bars
Hey, anyone else notice that the Italian Grand Prix isn't an F1 race at Monza and is instead a NASCAR race in Bumfuck Nowhere? And that they later use the exact same footage for the Monaco Grand Prix? Which is a GODDAMN STREET CIRCUIT?
Man, and I thought Super Megaforce got lazy.
The Megazords and the fear cats were my favorite parts of the series
6:33, as a racing nerd i can explain. First thats not the right track. The Italian gp is usually held at Monza, and that too me looks like Brans Hatch which is in England. Second, the announcer. It could be taken from live commentary. Third, 7 wins in a row and wining the championship. We dont know how many rounds into this championship they are. Plus if you win 7 in a row then they might as well give you the title.
"Stunt fighting isn't like real fighting"
As if stunt men have to learn fake martial arts lmao
The only major difference is stunt fighters know how to look like they took a hit or look like they hit you without making contact
can't help but smile when I hear the mr ice and Mr sun song
Me too
My personal theory as to why there’s only 5 and later 6 Rangers for this season is because maybe the Ranger technology is really expensive to create especially since this is all privately funded by just one guy.
I enjoy over drive purely through nostalgia and I loved the theme song
