The way he makes Guitar Rig sound is ridiculous! !
I like an overdrive that doesn't change the fundamental EQ of your amp and guitar... but just adds drive and a little compression to give a slightly nicer feel.. more fluid I suppose.
For me the Tim (Timmy) Pedal is the best clean overdrive pedal on the planet. I stacked two Timmy together. I couldn't be happier! Good video thanks!
I prefer the term “full frequency” overdrive, meaning that it doesn’t impart a specific sonic characteristic (or not much of one). That can be a wonderful thing, or the boosted low end could bury your sound in a loud mix. The Morning Glory is excellent, the KoT (obviously), but best in breed at the moment is the Greer Lightspeed. I’d love to see your impressions of that pedal.
Your reviews/demos on pedals are the best I have seen and I have been playing guitar for 14 years. Your playing is fantastic but you also use a great clean tone and a great guitar as a foundation before adding pedals. The way you change up your playing is VERY helpful with pedal demos I am so not a fan of just playing the same old riff and then changing the pedal setting... or playing a famous riff or something and switching settings. Just play guitar like you would in your room and give the pedals a good test that way! and I love how you give each pedal a fair amount of time and play for a bit. Keep doing what you're doing man. It's really great and it is very helpful.

This guy makes the best guitar videos out there. I just can't get the right sound with P90 + Klon. The guitar sounds beautiful without the pedals, but onto the pedals.
I learn loads from Friday Fretworks, and from watching , hearing you play. A wiz indeed. A mark of the great teacher is remembering how he/she first learnt. " Not breaking any part as a bad carver might " , Plato, Phaedrus You have that gift IMHWO.

A tone I've been using recently is based around a overdrive band-limited to mids in parallel with a clean path with a bit of compression and a limiter. This is effectively like an exciter for mid frequencies - adding some warm harmonics but keeping the natural highs, dynamics and attack of the clean. My definition of "transparent" in this context. Btw, the comp/lim is to keep a good balance between the dry and overdriven tones across the dynamic range

Read the paper instructions on these! Properly dialing em up, specially the various versions of the Timmy, is worth looking into!
In my experience people have very different ideas of what "transparent" means. I've heard people say things like Zvex Super Hard-Ons as being transparent while they actually add a ton of treble BUT that of course can give you a lot of clarity which to some people is transparent.
A lot of people think that pedals that just boost volume without any tone shift are 'transparent. The way our ears work though, as volume increases we perceive more highs and lows so if something boosts volume you would actually have to EQ things somewhat for our PERCEPTION to be the tone hasn't changed.
Everyone seems to have a different definition of what it means, and seem to argue incessantly about it. My take on all of this is, if you like what you're hearing, that's all that matters.

I am surprise your King of tone is not part of that video as I thought it was one of your favorites and I would easy classify it as a "transparent overdrive". Am I wrong there ?
I would agree with other comments which already mentioned the double barrel does a great job and that all pedals in that test sound great. You might naturally have adapted a little bit your game and attack to match each personality...

Merci François, that's very kind of you. I'm glad you're enjoying the videos! :) I do love the K.O.T but I wouldn't say it's transparent as such. The left hand side is more of a clean boost but to my ears, there's a very distinct mid-hump with the right (gain) side. It's nowhere near as drastic as the TS808 but it's definitely there :)

I agree completely ; set on the low gain option, the KOT is something closer to a BD2 than a TS808...

After hearing the TS808, now I know what Townsend used on Athena. Tim is the King, IMO. My one always on pedal. All the rest are as needed. Tim feeds all the rest perfectly.

Cliff Bushhart Cheers Cliff! That’s a good shout. I’ve sort of stayed away from that up until now as I’m endorsed by Yamaha and didn’t want it to look like an advert etc, but there’s been so much interest in them, I think a video is definitely in order 🙂
Tubescreamer and similar pedals tend to "grey" the sound to my ears. It was only until I tried pedals like the Benson Preamp and similar that the "greying" effect wasn't so noticeable. I put it down to the mid boost (or perhaps the bass and treble reduction). I'm not sure if others have had this experience although a few close friends swear by the Tubescreamer and its ilk and get good results with them.
I feel like the Morning Glory is the most transparent when using it to drive. Sweet sustain and a bit of grit but still my guitar. My Centura (clon clone) fattens up the tone noticeably and changes it most if used to really drive the signal vs just using it to get that fattened edge of break up thing.
Could you perhaps upload a video on loop switching systems and/or buffers? You could discuss the importance of having a buffer before (or at some point in the chain) your true bypass pedals. Pete Cornish recommends one high-quality buffer at the start of the chain followed by all true (TRUE, not some of these semi-true bypass pedals, or hardwired bypass, which has pros and cons) bypass pedals.
Then you could talk about true bypass loopers, why they are essential if you have more than 4-6 pedals, and if you use one, which one you use and why. Thanks mate, and Happy Easter from Australia!!

TASTY GUITAR PLAYING AND TONE!!!
Can you talk about your Radioshop pickups compared to stock fender pickups or even aftermarket fender pickups (not sure if you have a strat with fender pickups around) and what the difference is? Specs? What sounds are they best at? I’ve heard they are more touch sensitive but is that possible without making them higher output or closer to the strings?

thing is....once you start playing and forget about what pedal your using , they all sound great.....but all that aside...the double barrel sounded really nice!!

Have you tried a Sola Sound Power booster or Overdriver? Now that is more transparent than a klon.
this isn’t about anything that you’ve talked about in this video, but i was wondering what you’ve done to mount both of your power supplies. i ordered the pedal train classic 2, which doesn’t come with the equipment needed to mount a power supply under the pedalboard. i’ve thought about simply cable tying it, but i’d love to know what you did, since it does look like you have the brackets that are used to mount the power supply
Hey Kolby. They are indeed brackets - I'm not sure what's changed since they've updated the Pedaltrain models but I just bought two sets of Voodoo Labs brackets that were designed for the PT2. It'd be worth dropping Pedaltrain a line if you're stuck - in my experience, they're very helpful :)
Nice video. I would have liked it better without the echo in the signal though .

We can use (the later) Wittgenstein to justify the use of the term.
A word acquires meaning through usage. This is contra to the standard "definitional" literalist approach.
I prefer "more or less opaque" or "coloured" to "transparent".
It is truly a marketing gimmick.
Matt Gilbert Words definitely acquire meaning through usage. There is no doubt about that. Also love Jeff Beck’s use of the aforementioned pedal.

I have a Marshall plexi that i wana make it to sound cranked without cranking it , which transparent pedal would u suggest tim or king of tone?
No overdrive is transparant it always changes the original audio signal that went in. Sorry dont ment to be a wise@ss.

I mean obviously any pedal is going to alter the signal coming in, there would be no point to a truly transparent drive because it would do nothing...
I’m inclined to agree there. I kinda make that point in the video. I guess it’s a case of refining the definition of ‘transparent’ to mean ‘neutral’ here in that it’s in reference to a pedal that boosts all frequencies relatively evenly whilst introducing an amount of clipping 🙂

If you like what they do, why does it matter what you've paid? We all assign differing levels of value to our "bits" of gear, and to our money itself. There's stuff I wouldn't own if it was free, and stuff I'd pay a lot for, and there's people the opposite. None of us are wrong, and it's our money, so all of us are right.

it's just a linguistic market war, the truth about electric guitars is they're already colored since they are using specific coil wound to presents specific tone, if you really want a transparent tone just put a mic in front of your guitar... again, learn how language works is more important instead of requests a transparent overdrive to pedal builders, I mean they are also act like linguistic expert to say that their products won't colored your guitar... Heuheuheuheu
It's usually marketing hype. It's difficult for everyone to agree on these terms, because there's no standardized dictionary.
I use 3 different OD pedals. All three are transparent, and Not transparent,! Boss, T.S., and one by Rocktron, with bass cut. All three alter at least one frequency along the spectrum. At the same time, Not giving the power source(Marshall,Fender,Vox,etc.etc.), some Other personality. Other OD's such as "Tube Driver", turn My power source into a blithering idiot!!
