    “In general, the experience tends to be one where you discover that love is the most important thing in the universe. And this Hallmark card platitude suddenly becomes this profundity. And it IS a profundity... we’ve heard it some many times it becomes banal... There’s an interesting line between the profound and the banal, and psychedelics definitely work along that line.”

    Michael, had to come over here because comments were not allowed on your video on mushrooms and Maria Sabina. As a Tibetan Buddhist practitioner of 19+ years, I followed your experience exactly, INCLUDING Maria Sabina. Please read an English version of The Heart Sutra . . . blast your mind! You experienced Emptiness! Which is what I try to cultivate each morning with a page-long version. DMT gave you a moment of what is called the BlissVoid. All is love. You are all. And we are empty. To me, it is like I become a floating eyeball without the eye . . . just pure awareness, with no beginning and no end. I just need a guide because I am a crone, old dancer (your Elder! snork 1952). It is Maria Sabina, I believe. Thank you. Much gratitude. ms. mickeypamo

    Panic reactions, “Bad trips” are in service to incredibly powerful, important issues that often haven’t been faced. Appropriate Navigation, or an established “Flight Plan” and more importantly how to handle issues in flight, redirecting the path if needed, not landing because there’s some severe turbulence, is incredibly important and needed for high dose experiences. Having guides, for those inexperienced people who have never been high, is critical. In my opinion. I don’t particularly like Pollan. He didn’t re-start Psychedelic research as it never stopped, it went underground after 1966(California) and in 1970-Nixons War on Drugs & the Controlled substances act. I support FULL legalization of all drugs for adults to buy without a prescription at the drug store. Just like in the days of my Great Grandfather & my grandfather(pre 1914)

    • @toughlikerocks
      @toughlikerocks 3 роки тому +6

      Right on. What you say fits with the narrative that Pollan puts forth that we lost our way with psychedelics in the West because we never had the proper cultural framework in place to guide users through the experience in a compassionate and constructive way. The fact that the current scientific trials are in many ways following the same guidelines as tradition shamanistic rituals is such a profound example of the world coming full circle.

There are Plenty of us who’ve used all sorts of drugs over the last 40 years and we are intimately familiar with how different drugs effect us so we are against exclusionary regulation, be it medical or exclusive to the wealthy. Every adult should have the right to access ANY drug they so choose whenever they desire at a reasonable cost.

    The Vietnam war was crucial in the demonization of psychedelic drugs. The Military Industrial Complex quickly figured out that your soldiers aren’t gong to be much good if they’re convinced LOVE is the most important thing in the Universe! So, the war on drugs began. It was a remarkable about face for both society in general, and the psychiatric profession in particular. I worked in a youth hotel in the beginning of the 70’s. I remember some guests took LSD, had a bad trip and ended up in a mental hospital. And were never the same again. There’re also some rock musicians who never recovered from using psychedelics.

    I thought the book was an entertaining and stimulating read, and he speaks in the same clear, funny, and interesting way. I am preparing for an ibogaine experience and his thoughts on there being no societal "container" for the psychedelic experience got me thinking about how I might create one for myself within my personal support structure. Good stuff.

    I have autistic "ticks". I'll take psychedelics periodically to lessen them...and it works amazingly. They have also delivered me out of extreme depression during covid when I was alone all day, unable to run my business while my husband was working double at his company with very little help. It was a dark time and I was slipping into mental illness. 2 rounds of mushrooms and I made a 100% recovery.

    I really liked your talk. I was waiting and wondering if you'd bring in meditation and you did! Much of what you talked about up to that point sounded a lot like mindfulness meditation benefits or outcomes or whatever the word is. You reinforced for me the necessity for me to continue my practice. (I'm an alcoholic and don't want to go to another mind altering substance.) You said at the beginning that Inuit don't have mind altering plants where they live because nothing grows on their traditional lands. Not true. There is abundant plant life in the Arctic, above and below the treelike. The plants are very small. I don't know if any Arctic plants are hallucinogenic. I do know that Inuit Shaman are associated with altered states.
    Again, thank you for your talk.

      That's quite a one-sided part of the story. Terence talked a lot of bullshit, but he was also very intelligent and said a lot of very very interesting things. As his brother Dennis said: "Even if 10% of what Terence said was true it would be absolutely remarkable". I think actively listening to someone, even if you think completely otherwise, really helps you to refine your ideas and get new ideas. I think most people have something interesting to say from which you can learn and grow :)

    If so many people have and are taking these transformative trips, why hasn’t there been this amazing positive cultural shift? I want it to be the answer (I’d love to try it too) but is it?

    • @junglejuice4052
      @junglejuice4052 5 років тому +2

      True. And back when the global population was much smaller and people lived in tribes the percent of people who had access to, say, mushrooms and the transcendental experience would have been much higher. Maybe that’s why they lived a more spiritual and conciliatory life. But sadly, as Terence McKenna pointed out, the population was eventually denied access to mushrooms and other psychoactive material and thus began our descent into the hell of alienation and ennui that we know today. Maybe..
