I worked in a youth hotel in the beginning of the 70’s. I remember some guests took LSD, had a bad trip and ended up in a mental hospital. And were never the same again. There’re also some rock musicians who never recovered from using psychedelics.
I took acid five rimes between 17-19 years old. Depression began in early high school. One terrible trip....one transformative. The bad one was ego related for sure and the good one was seeing patterns. Why patterns? They called it "patterns". My friends said, "take acid and smoke hash and you'll see patterns". More than one person said this to me...as if it WAS a fact. So I did. It was an animated thing of constancy that ABSORBED ME...ego gone and all is this beauty...these ever changing, fully absorbing patterns. ... and in real life 'm staring at a wall for who know how long? I'm 63 and I remember how hard my depression was hitting me prior to the experience...and I see a period of life afterwards that seems now as a reprieve. But life has pressed me and I'm depressed again...thinking about his...kind of scared. Is fear ego?
12:08 I like how the guy who just HAD to play "devils advocate" about psychedelics is wearing a tshirt about alcohol. Not like a drunk person ever killed anybody, oh wait...
Mushroom Tea Murder: Man Removes Friends Still Beating Heart - thats just one of them on google theres so many even not on the news that happened to friends of friends too
This is true. Set and setting are crucial. We should focus on creating a culture where set, setting and dose are very important when you take these substances. When someone tells me they didnt enjoy pot you usually find out they smoked too much for the first time couldnt handle it plus they are usually in a place where they shouldnt be smoking half a joint and freak out. When someone does something dumb when drinking alcohol, again usually too much in a setting where it probably wasnt the best to be putting down copious amounts of boos. With alcohol this issue is easy to just write off bc we are used to and almost largely ignore the negative consequences compared to psychedelics. A large segment of our culture will largely laugh when alcohol comes up and get uncomfortable when you bring up mushrooms. I can almost guarantee that if these substances were legalized nation wide only the click bait worthy stories where something bad happened will make the news thus a negative influence of public opinion. We live in an interesting time.
Yes, that's why people don't promote alcohol like a miracle drug. His question was not only fair but useful, you should be interested in every risk of a new drug to prevent unnecessary damage. By the way you guys are clearly more sensible to criticism than the speaker.
24:30 hey I knew this as the "wim hoff breathing exercise" and it does do something very peculiar and you feel that very strong "high" on just breathing oxygen but it doesn't last longer than a few seconds and I never knew what to do of it except that it felt good
Great talk! Leave it to the US to attempt to weaponize something so empathic. It's no coincidence that psychedelic clinical research stopped right around the time Vietnam needed non empathic policy executors.
@Chris Schneider Lots of indicators for that assertion, Chris, sorry. You show a closed mind and a strong anti-liberal bias in your comments here. That is enough for me to feel the scourge of you. I do however, appreciate you knowing that there is no federal coverage for autism, though. Might be hope for you yet.
@Chris Schneider does it feel good to hurt others? Do you like to be overtly violent as well? I wouldn't judge you for it. I like it as well. Nothing like sadism to feel powerful and good about yourself.
@Chris Schneider oh wow that is scary relatable. Do you also like to drive aggressively and recklessly while screaming the words of your favorite weezer songs? Do you also have trouble maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships? Do you often lack empathy for others? Daddy?
Finally scientists can openly talk about psychedelics and altered consciousness. There's so much potential in this research not only for sick people but for us as humans to develop more understanding and compassion towards ourselves and others.
If so many people have and are taking these transformative trips, why hasn’t there been this amazing positive cultural shift? I want it to be the answer (I’d love to try it too) but is it?
True. And back when the global population was much smaller and people lived in tribes the percent of people who had access to, say, mushrooms and the transcendental experience would have been much higher. Maybe that’s why they lived a more spiritual and conciliatory life. But sadly, as Terence McKenna pointed out, the population was eventually denied access to mushrooms and other psychoactive material and thus began our descent into the hell of alienation and ennui that we know today. Maybe..
What Pollan refers to in min. 34 of his talk is 'The Road to Eleusis', an awakening book by Gordon Wasson, Albert Hoffmann and Carls Ruck, a very worthwhile book to read on this subject.
Funny that people don't know that Gordon Wasson wasn't a banker, but vice president of PR of JP morgan, recruited by the CIA to popularize magic mushrooms.
If you really want to learn about psychedelics, listen to or read everything by Terence McKenna. Terence’s brother, Dennis, is also an authority on the subject.
People who have watched the documentary "wild wild country" can relate to the Holotropic breath work mentioned above to the dynamic meditation that osho commmune used to practice .

So the great Michael Pollan didn't know that you are not your ego self? We all have a shared consciousness from which we can witness the constructed ego self. There's a space between the two that can be expanded through meditation. Many nde experiencers have vivid stories to share and their experiences have transformed them permanently. They no longer fear death. They often become peaceful. Much like a drug induced trip often expands our human experience.
23:29 She asked exactly what I need to know. He gave validation to my experience. I can testify to not being able to trip on any known substance yet (30gram mushrooms), (10strip LSD) (1 whole peyote), I don't have access to anything else. Although, I have become proficient in three different meditation techniques and I can achieve auditory and visual events. Daydream, sitting cross leg, mobile.
If what you say is true, you should maybe try to get in contact with the speaker, I'm sure he'd be very interested in taking a closer look at it. Maybe you'd be able to help researchers better understand how all this works
that dude did psychodelics till it traumatized him and his family and wife alienated him and he kept pushing them bc it "pays the bills". the mckennas are full of shit.
That's quite a one-sided part of the story. Terence talked a lot of bullshit, but he was also very intelligent and said a lot of very very interesting things. As his brother Dennis said: "Even if 10% of what Terence said was true it would be absolutely remarkable". I think actively listening to someone, even if you think completely otherwise, really helps you to refine your ideas and get new ideas. I think most people have something interesting to say from which you can learn and grow :)

I did a mushroom shake. Very strong. Never had any life-changing realisation, just lots of colour and music sounds awesome.
set and setting. the life-changing realizations are more likely when you have specific preparation, and intentionality supported by guides...
Thank you Mr Pollan its always a pleasure to hear & learn from you
I've read his "In Defense of Food" Manifesto, the man is right in more ways than one.

Right on, some goodness happening !
I have PTSD, currently on medication. However; it’s not enough. I really need to read this book and find out where I can get more help. It is exciting to know that there is more help out there.
Excellent one!
Amazing book! Thank you for doing this.

thank you you all that
It's great to see Mr. Pollan on this platform.
First!!
Just finished his book yesterday. Great read!
*Who are you ?*
Sushant Chaudhary He’s the all-prevailing existence consciousness bliss!
@@MrSushant3 He is someone who places importance on the act of leaving the first comment on a video, for some reason.
Excellent talk, thank you for sharing.
He is such a great speaker-have read his earlier books..
12:08 I like how the guy who just HAD to play "devils advocate" about psychedelics is wearing a tshirt about alcohol. Not like a drunk person ever killed anybody, oh wait...
There have been cases of people killing their friends while tripping on mushrooms or acid though thats real history look it up
Mushroom Tea Murder: Man Removes Friends Still Beating Heart - thats just one of them on google theres so many even not on the news that happened to friends of friends too
This is true.
God, this guy clearly has never done psychedelics. And yes, the irony of the tshirt is delicious.
Yes, that's why people don't promote alcohol like a miracle drug. His question was not only fair but useful, you should be interested in every risk of a new drug to prevent unnecessary damage. By the way you guys are clearly more sensible to criticism than the speaker.
thank you oh thankfully
Reading The Botany of Desire at the moment. Terribly interesting book!
What a great video. Love you Michael Pollan!! Thanks google.
thankfully
24:30 hey I knew this as the "wim hoff breathing exercise" and it does do something very peculiar and you feel that very strong "high" on just breathing oxygen but it doesn't last longer than a few seconds and I never knew what to do of it except that it felt good
I love him so much!
Remarkable, as always!
This is so interesting. The first question really blew my mind.
Absolutely FASCINATING 💖💖 💖
Great talk! Leave it to the US to attempt to weaponize something so empathic. It's no coincidence that psychedelic clinical research stopped right around the time Vietnam needed non empathic policy executors.
@Chris Schneider I'm beginning to see that you are too, Chris.
@Chris Schneider That is the reply of someone who has nothing of any substance to say.
Daddy?
Thank you Michael. I hope I get to be experienced.
Good on google, and michael pollen get this word out!
that was fantastic and very seemingly level. bravo google
lovely sir
GREAT QUESTION at : 27:30
Finally scientists can openly talk about psychedelics and altered consciousness.
Maybe..
@@junglejuice4052 "..why hasn’t there been this amazing positive cultural shift? " There is and its racing.
James Fadiman answer that in a video titled Cultural Implications of Altered States of Conciousness

perfect. the world needs to hear more about this.
@@MalAnders94 why would they purposely popularise the magic mushroom?
Merry Christmas, idol idlos thankfully
If you really want to learn about psychedelics, listen to or read everything by Terence McKenna. Terence’s brother, Dennis, is also an authority on the subject.
Thank you so much! Very insightful!
People who have watched the documentary "wild wild country" can relate to the Holotropic breath work mentioned above to the dynamic meditation that osho commmune used to practice .
Thank you. I'm going to watch "wild wild country" later tonight.
Excellent
Thank you for sharing this very informative video
amazing talk
when he talked about 5- meo- dmt and the guy nodded his head, I bet he watches hamilton's pharmacopeia too lol. But this was a great speech.
24:45 the suspiciously happy & smiling guy who's "read about micodosing on blogs"🤗🙃🤣
Finally, a new and promising hope for the cure of mental disorders. 👏🤞

@@obedobrain Off the wall or bizarre? Who knows or cares? Not I.
YOU ARE RIGHT
23:29 She asked exactly what I need to know.
Interesting, Perhaps you have a very weak Default mode network But It does seem you have Healthy ego.
Did he just call Psilocybin an INGREDIENT!? Great guy such good work
Great talk and answers! Terence Mckenna should be a good starting point if you found the subject matter of the talk interesting. ;)
that dude did psychodelics till it traumatized him and his family and wife alienated him and he kept pushing them bc it "pays the bills". the mckennas are full of shit.
Any particular talks or books by him you would recommend?
wow wow thankfully
Cool topic, glad to have watched this. It is a pity the book is not available in my country. Is there any way to get it? Could anybody share it?
Amazon?
Kickass video
22:22 Sorry, you're mistaken, watching this today (12-23-19), and Ram Dass died yesterday. RIP ...Is it weird that I'm watching this random video and he brings Ram Dass up in his lecture??
Magical artist🤤
Taking LSD has brought me to peace about everything. It all makes sense now!
Excellent, now you're a pacified pawn in the game of the powerful. It's all love, right? The world is wonderful and there is no reason to change anything, it's all gods plan.
@@MalAnders94 I agree 100% spread the word
Theres a book being written right now about the life of Al Hubbard by a old LSD chemist. Having known Al its Likely to be the most accurate and detailed book on his life. To be out in 2020
Would love to know the title and author if you have it.
It’s always about control. Or losing control.
I just finished reading the book. How could someone find a place where to do psilocybin therapy? I'm tired of medications. Any information would help. Thanks an advance.
