A problem I've had with a lot of the recent aliens content is that while it is good, it all at some point decides it has to do an ass tease of some of the really cool stuff in the greater lore and then never explain it or follow it up for the sake of mystery. Like, xeno city is a really cool idea, but we get no context until literally the 2nd to last mission in the game that it even is a thing and then it just drops a bunch of unanswerable questions and the game ends.
Same with all the references to the greater universe like the UPP and Tientsin name drops. Mystery is only cool until it gets gratuitous.

I will point out that it actually makes sense that the dropship survived the nuke, as it is a space capable military hardware so it'd be shielded against EMP and various strong radiation effects. The one in the aliens movie also cut it fairly close with its nuke, though not as close as the games one. Which is probably what they were trying to shoehorn in as well.
But it'd be pretty silly for super advanced dropships to be disabled by basic nuclear bombs. In an era where everyone has access to nuclear powered machines

@@rayvonwade-hunt570 No, I fully believe he has watched them. By the sounds of it it was a fair bit ago since a proper viewing.
And while the ending was nice artistically, I fully agree with Rimmy it sucked as a gaming end. There were many different options to have a more engaging end play than run from the scripted giant monster. Though I'm not as upset over the three sacrifices one after the other as he was, they did do Martinez and Stern dirty in how simple they were to brush aside as well.
Hopefully the lack of detail suddenly appearing for the alien city and the titan was to try and leave sequel openings rather than development running aground but I kinda agree with the chat person who said the story peaked with the Pryce confrontation and seemed to just tie up ends after, rather sloppily. But endings can be the worst to try and think of in a world where "everything" is considered cliche by someone, so I can see why it might have been a sudden decision to just chuck half the Aliens plot in to see it out. A few patches and a couple of level changes for the end of the campaign and the game will be golden.

my guy the dropship flies out after the nuke lands, the blast effect alone should have sent the dropship spinning, not to mention the countless other nukes landing all around - and the fact that the nukes shouldn't even fire for 9 days yet. The ending is total fucking trash. It's not even nice artistically - it doesn't connect with the rest of the story in any meaningful way apart from Cassandra herself a character with so far a single cutscene, Marlow isn't actually important in the ending and the Xeno Titan is just a totally left field ancient enemy. Even Harper's sacrifice is ruined by the fact that just moments earlier we were chain-spamming 40 mike mikes to stun this guy and yet now we're completely trapped and hopeless. Weak story telling that was clearly just trying to rush through various scenes that it "had" to have, and emulate the movies.
The game had plenty of very cool sequences and action cutscenes, the Dropship fight for example is an absolute peak of the game and Pryce's follow-up is the best story moment in the entire game. It feels like those last cutscenes were rushed, even the animation is shit, Stern especially just kinda looks like he's standing there like a gormless idiot rather than doing anything heroic or looking like he's in control on a battlefield, the weird close-up on his face makes him look like a nutcase.

@@RimmyDownunder When I say artistically, I mean the titan looks awesome and the alien city is suitably unnerving and intriguing. That's it. Story and play were completely shat on, fully agree.
Yeah there should've been a hell of a lot of turbulence on the dropship, but I was commenting more on the EMP effects and any other radiation issues more than anything. Though it can also do orbital landing, so stability would still be heavily focused on in its design.
I agree with like 99.99% of your conclusion, just wanted to comment on how the dropship would be designed to be able to survive that kind of nonsense to a degree. As for the nuke dropping right on it, I feel that was more shitty perspective than the nuke landing right on its tail. Could be wrong, but it looked to me that it landed after the dropship had made a little distance and we see it from a rubbish low view. Then again, action games and movies have open helicopters fly, base level cars driving away, or tiny ships sail from nukes landing barely 100m away, so could've been just rule of cool BS.
The 9 day thing is just them not wanting to have to make multiple endings, so I sorta just chucked it into the shitty story telling pile that was the end chunk of the game. I'm very curious what happens if you bum rush the pioneer station and manage to get there before the infestation level got overly noticeable, if it let you turn it off and made a new issue to contend with. But highly doubt it. I also wonder if you screw the timing and the nukes drop, do they have a cutscene for that or if it just resets you like it did with full squad death.

@@RimmyDownunder The Codex says it's only temporary and so we as players know that, but I think the in-game characters don't know that. Their only source of info on the Guardian's apparatus was Dr. Becker telling them that Marlow somehow found a way to suspend it "indefinitely" which is just straight up misinformation. I THINK that's one of the ways the game tries to explain why not a single damn person on the Otago knows that there was a Xenomorph in the containment cell, because Becker could have simply said "Oh he died mysteriously"/"Oh he started acting out so I purged the room and cleaned it up"
It's still really damn stupid that NOBODY CHECKED after all that time though. Like, even if Becker had closed it, all someone had to do was open the window. Someone should have double-checked what the Dr. was up to especially after our only prisoner inexplicably died. The game handled this plot point so clumsily when there were so many ways it could have been handled logically while making Becker and W-Y look more competent and ruthless.

What kind of containment cell is that supposed to be? No levels of redundancy whatsoever - just a single bulkhead door and a window. Also, since the Xeno grew from a chestburster into an adult drone somebody, probably the good doctor, must have been feeding it. They are not chiapets, they require sustenance. Everybody on that ship had to be aware of its presence onboard, yet not only was it not immediately destroyed, they didn't place any guards either. On another note, how does the chestburster kill its host when the only thing its bursting through is a glass viewport on his chest? Like, there's even a little spew of blood - why?

I quite enjoyed watching this game and do hope the continue to update it.
A few things I think would severely help in making it better ^note spoilers from here on down^
I think a slight rework of some classes would be good:
The medic I think should definitely get that reduce stress for 30 seconds.
While I could see the sergeants replaced with an ability to actually split your squad into fire teams - allowing you split control of your squad into two smaller fire teams of two. This can actually be quite useful for stealth, defence and even resource gathering while not to breaking as they can be quickly overwhelmed.
The wayland utani guys are just a joke really. The entire “there harder than the aliens” is a complete fail.
And you know an easy fix to this? Make their fireteams slightly stronger with classes similar to yours.
Have a fireteam of 5 of them with 1 being either a Flamer guy, a smart gunner or a techy who deploys a sentry gun.
Funnily enough they kind of make do this with the cultist. They throw a mix of gunners and melee lads into the same unit and send them in. The gunners take cover while the combat guys charge you so your kind of forced to split your fire to counter both.
Now this semi more justifies opening the gates on the guys as they can prove a slightly harder force compared to numptys with rifles.
And better make these areas you have to break actual threats.
Multiple smart gunners, choke points with flamers, a large wave of lads you know will hurt so opening the gates/vents becomes a almost hard yes.
The stealth section… it’s poor as you said.
Maybe instead of having the doctor reveal a grown alien from containment. Have him shut down the weapons and such and have a praetorian get in - or a special one like a “praetorian hunter/lurker” that’s essentially described to hunt solo and be extremely hard to kill.
Now have Hayes not alone, but set up with a squad of no names/wounded marines/support personnel - could have it that as you explore around you find some. Maybe a wounded marine who got attacked and if you found a physician first can get him into the squad. Or a engineer who can get a synthetic up and running, etc.
Now you have these guys going around with her and slowly have them getting wiped out too.
This would make the engagements scarier but also give you that feeling you are fighting back too.
Plus it would justify the cage thing with it getting burned (with doors sealed) but being this extremely hard to kill alien it breaks through the glass - tho now you can say that due to its wounds it’s more likely to flee the battle with enough firepower tossed at it.
And same goes for the final mission.
The final mission should have been your marines plus the characters.
Having this extra large squad cutting their way through the alien city to get Cas and getting out makes for a extremely good story moment.
Hell having YOUR marines in in a proper life of death no way out situation dialogue between themselves about staying behind and getting Cas and Hayes out due to how Cas being Harpers daughter and Hayes having proved herself a marine at this point, having a small scene where they stop and you hear the dialogue of them choosing to make that last stand and seeing Cas and Hayes retreat away and playing out this last stand and having your hero’s go down in a hail of gunfire makes that attachment to them so deer.
And you can have it then cut to Hayes and Cas making the final run.
Also for additions I think would make this game more interesting:
    1. As above how i described the sergeant change. I’d make the APC a 2 man upgrade vs just 1.
This would make the idea of getting this APC so much stronger than just a 1 man upgrade but being able to bring a full team of all classes + 1 gives that upgrade a nicer feeling too.
It would also make the sergeants split squad ability even stronger - but you kind of want that going into the later stages - and would make your fire teams feel like they could actually hold up themselves now vs having to sprint for safety with one another constantly.
    2. Have a upgrade system for your squad equipment.
I.e. Sentry guns, welders, APC, dropship, etc.
It would make people want to hold onto their supplies more vs just throw them all into Sentry Guns and tools and medical equipment each mission vs scavenging for them.
This could also mean buying upgrades like having your welders being able to hold aliens back longer - I.e. justify the short time they hold back aliens initially while giving them a chance to do as Rimmy suggests with having them hold a minute or 2.
Or even simple upgrades like having your sentry guns be more resistant to damage and have more ammo to shoot with.
And upgrades for your APCs could be space to include more sentry’s - so no running 4 sentry groups from the start - but also maybe upgrades to its ability to evacuate and move and shoot.
And same for the dropship maybe being able to do multiple deployments a day.
    3. Add a few more classes in there.
Maybe a grenadier class - upgrades can be stronger grenades, reduced grenade cost and maybe a crippler grenade for your big/sprinter aliens.
Rank ups could be stuff like a double shot launcher which allows two shots for 1.
Maybe a CQC lad who’s similar but for shotguns.
Hell have his first ability tho he to “boot” an alien. I.e. you get one mixed in he can give them a kick away from the group to kill and avoid the acid burns.
Could also have one of his ranks be to be able to hold off face hugger/alien yoinks longer.
    - note id make this a standard amongst all awake characters that they can fight off a face hugger and even a basic alien for a short time before losing to them.
And like Rimmy said you can send someone to rip it off/shoot it off - ripping it off means you get them away to a distance that the acid doesn’t cause lasting wounds while shooting it off means the acid is closer causing more lasting and permanent injuries.
I’d also make synthetics a free placement unit. So they can be a engineer, medic or even a recruit - tho as a marine they are much more loud and spottable for human targets (slightly more ignorable for low tier aliens - not permanent just less notable to attack compared to human targets) and as a recruit they have just use a primary gun and hack vs secondary equipment.
    - truthfully I’d also have a lot more cannon fodder be added into maps for quick recruitment that doesn’t cause to much of a spiral early for easy wins.
I.e. have some of the cultist that get kidnapped not just be cultists but maybe “hidden” survivors or dockers/unionists - maybe a handful of security personnel.
And if you save them there’s a chance to recruit them permanently depending on how good a leader you have.
But also just recruitable for that mission as a basic extra gun - workers getting pistols, while security get rifles.
Then you can have this extra fire power whos a bit more expandable and when you get home are treated as saved civillians - which is how you raise your ability to recruit actual survivors as full personnel vs just the very very scarce handful of recruitable personnel.
Hell it would make a more interesting thing in those later mission with the wayland mercs as you could have some maybe more willing to pull treaties/even join you against the aliens if you have shown to be merciful to civilians and even wayland personnel.

Plus the turrets, they had turrets deployed! If that dropship had also brought back up, they should have managed to hold that position pretty easily while waiting for the named characters to return.
Can't really put everything in here for how I would have changed that ending myself, but I imagined the B-team got sent down too to support the A-team. Saw how those who got to name them were having banter in chat, so imagine there was an actual rivalry (Red not being involved in it, given you had him on both teams on several occasions) and that final battle is when their rivalry ended. Fighting as one, setting aside their competitive urge to be the best of the marines on the Otago, for the sake of the mission. That would have been badass to have that happening whilst the other three were down in the ancient city saving Cassandra.
Then, instead of it being Harper sacrificing himself, both teams ended up clearing out the entire hive and dropped down to throw RPGs and plasma upon that big xeno. Having those who you commanded and ensured the safety of in all the other missions, saving you instead now. Give the player a sense of pride in seeing the marines they guided and upgraded, be absolute badasses and be the heroes in the final cutscene. With them all coming back home together too

Same. The small glimpses you see look like prety generic marines. I assumer your guys boarded the dropship earlier given they're meant to be pretty exhausted and physically holding by threads with all the injuries and acid burns on them.
Given what I see, I'm dead certain there was supposed to be a bigger setpiece for the final missioj but they ran out of time. Hell, I'm certain the entire Mission 12 level isn't finished, and their using low lighting to keep the bad details hidden.

Praetorians will attack (sometimes), run away, heal back some of their health (don't know if you noticed that), and call for reinforcements. To kill them you basically have to chase them down or corner them.

I realize that the game is super rail-roady given how often it just steals control of your squad away from you, but it really irritated me when I noticed Aliens lurking in the offices floor of Pharos Spire despite me actively ignoring the vents objective. Setting aside they're literally ambushing in the vents without completing the objective anyways.
Why even mention that opening the vents would let the Aliens in when the game just decides they're walking around the halls anyways? I would much rather fight the mercs, both because a grenade and an rpg generally deletes the slow and tightly packed squads, but also because letting opening the vents into the last bastion of the city which could easily still house civilians seems... Really fucking out of character?
Especially since it isn't necessary. You can absolutely kill the mercs without the 'help' of the Aliens (setting aside that such 'help' means a neverending swarm swamps the halls now).
Feels like the rail-roading gets extremely frustrating at this point in the game. Maybe the nexus mod community (there are some nexus mods up and running now) can force the vent objective into being optional. Even if its an ineffectual change, because the defenses being disabled at the ground floor means the Aliens can start swarming in anyways (e.g. when Hunslet notes them swarming up the building), it'd still be an improvement to the game. But deny them access to the vent system.
Maybe someone can make the implicit death of your squad into a neverending horde defense a la the final segment in Halo Reach. Throw in some characterful dialogue for the last stand.
Or have it work with a timer representing when the nukes arrive (and explain why the background timer is irrelevant, maybe with some Pryce sending some emergency launch codes that accelerate the nukes or some such). If you wipe before the timer but after the story characters escape, you win, but if you survive the full duration of escalating threats you get some fluffy dialogue between those holding the desperate last stand. Maybe even have the last stand field all of your marines while at it.
Can't speak to how much work that would be, being ignorant of the modding process for the game. But it'd make these last arcs of the game real goddamn cool.

Jokes aside, at first I thought the game just had a female heavy cast, which is only worth mentioning due to 'the times'. But now I think every named male character has been killed (9:44:48 hopefully Harper didn't die); worse, it's hard to put into words, but it feels like the writers didn't want any male presence in the good team at all, and we only grudgingly got Harper and Stern as male good guys (Martinez too, I suppose). Harper didn't need to get disabled from his abilities to the point of being sedated either, it felt more like the game didn't want Hayes to be outnumbered by men in the command squad.
Add to that, the writing is bizarrely discordant (especially during the Otago segment):
    - Martinez doesn't take charge of the marines during the security breach on the Otago, the chief engineer acts as Hayes' point of contact instead. This makes sense when she's trying to cut through the doors, but not when she clearly needs help killing the thing. Hayes's claim that all the marines are outside is demonstrably incorrect as well, as the wounded marines would have been mobilized in a fight-or-die scenario. Martinez or a subordinate (even some nameless sergeant) would have been around to direct the marines remaining aboard ship.
    - The head doctor chooses to stay with the wounded marines in the infirmary, but while the scene is similar to other impactful scenes where a doctor stays behind to tend their patients, it shares only the form without the substance. The entire medical staff in that room is shown to be killed, while the alien is shown in the scene to ignore the wounded marine on the bed. In spite of this, the Otago loses none of its ability to heal marines, with the psychologist apparently slotting into the medical head's position and new medical staff appearing from the aether.
    - The head of research turns out to be evil (He was the only non-fighting man in a position of authority, so it was inevitable. Or so it felt). Rimmy goes into significant detail on how basically any plan was better than what was written and I agree. I really want to reiterate that a ship crashed in hostile territory, taking in survivors, some of which are cult sympathizers would have had guards posted in important spaces. This wouldn't even need to be marines. Arming a few of the apparently infinitely spawning scientists or self-reviving medical staff would have done wonders in their areas, not to mention sentry turrets to cover other important areas. I mentioned the infinite scientist spawns, but when the entire team is slaughtered by that alien, only to be replaced in their entirety in the next scene, it ripped me right out of any immersion.
    - The confrontation with Director Pryce. Hayes claims she's a synth, but we never see any evidence. In fact, the dialogue in that scene is so strange to me that it seems like they had to re-write it at some point, but didn't want to go back and re-do the animations or setpieces. Pryce's reactions and body language seem to indicate that Hayes is laying on some damning evidence that would ruin her if she left Lethe, but being accused of being a Synth isn't a reason to stay in your office and die. Even the argument that she is, indeed a synth doesn't hold up when you consider Ash and Bishop from the Alien and Aliens movies. They are clearly not stuck in one place, and can carry out directives creatively when needed. Rather than the synth story, I think this is an area where a subplot was cut from the game, and the conversation is awkward because of it (otherwise it's just poorly written).
    - The most damning issue I have: Where is Hunslett's Co-pilot/Loadmaster/Crew Chief? Ferro had Spunkmeyer, so why and how is Hunslett alone at the controls when her crew chief should have been with her on the run bringing Harper and his team aboard the station? There's just an unremarked empty seat behind her the whole game and she's just doing two people's jobs all the while having the spare attention to be cracking jokes and making observations that seem like they'd need her to be tapped into the marine's helmet cams on top of following all the squad chatter.
    - There should have been a flood of new marine recruits after the Spire mission as former WY mercenaries that survived so far come to take refuge. You know, because people like to be alive, and it was obvious that the spire was doomed.
    /endrant
If Stern was going to go out, it should have been at the wheel of the APC since he was so adamant about the squad calling the cavalry (himself). The boss battle could have been about maneuvering the otherwise immortal enemy into positions where Stern could get a few shots off with the APC plasma cannon, and ultimately needing to ram it to finish it off, assuming he needed to die at all, since a boss fight about maneuvering an enemy into a position would have been infinitely better than the bad copy of the Spiderman PS1 game running from Monster-Ock "bossfight."
A disappointing game, writing-wise for sure. Putting it in the same place a Prometheus, I'd think.

@@GR-wp4wb When the controls can be pretty clunky and when squad wiping will force you to reload the game anyway reloading a save is perfectly reasonable. The game doesn't play by very clear and consistent rules either. If I carefully and meticulously worm my way through a mission and it just decides to beeline a runner at me at the worst time which just ignore the distraction mechanics it sucks. If I'm making my way through a mission having spent a lot of resources and time being as stealthy as possible and then the game spawns an alien out of a hole next to me the second I pass it or in a vent that then starts a massive chain reaction of death then hell yeah I'll reload it. The game gives you all these tools and incentives to be stealthy but the systems for it are not reliable or consistent enough to just 'accept the consequences' when it's not my fault it happened. If I go the wrong way and trigger an alien and it kills half my squad then fine, if I walk past a vent I knew was there and trigger it, fine. If I shoot a grenade and draw an alien to me and start a massive onslaught at the worst time fine, but losing half my squad because an alien spawned right next to me at the second I passed by and having all of my marines just somehow not kill it for ages isn't fun.
Consequences are for my actions, not for the failings of the game or it's mechanics.

    • @GR-wp4wb
      @GR-wp4wb Рік тому

@@BlargSmarg for me, if the game spawns an alien next to me in a vent or from a hive then that is just bad luck. Not the same as bad game design. I think once you get into the mindset that reloading is an option for when things don't go as you "think" they should then it's spoiled.
An example from the stream - the youtuber reloads because he pushed M by accident and one of the marines entered a coma and needed carried to APC. Rather than do it, reloaded. The loaded save took him back before any of the encounter starts, so now the whole sequence is played with full knowledge of what's coming and from where. I don't like that - but you guys can play how u like.

    • @BlargSmarg
      @BlargSmarg Рік тому +1

@@GR-wp4wb Except the game often gives you open warning about the fact you will be attacked with the intent of you preparing but often leaves it entirely unclear where from. Sometimes it tells you to prepare then walks you into a room with no access to all the turrets and command points you spent outside. That's not fun design, that just feels bad to play. As for 'bad luck' when an alien spawns next to you, sure, but when you spend ages carefully getting past a certain point, or fighting your way through a hunt and getting to the other side and then the game instantly spawns another alien right next to you that bad luck feels very unenjoyable. The game is built around trying to keep stress down, using the stealth mechanics to keep threat down, but the spawn systems and the way stealth works often just goes against that. If I play everything carefully and correctly and bother to take a lot of extra time to work my way through as stealthily as possible then of course having it ruined by an RNG spawn is going to feel really cheap and frustrating.
You can't build a game around using stealth as a core mechanic then expect players to just accept that they can be screwed by RNG regardless of all the effort they put in. Having started a second playthrough of my own, now on a harder difficulty and trying a more straight forward approach I'm actually having more fun because the stealth mechanics don't feel like a burden and I actually run into less issues because it's easier to blast your way quickly through enemies and make a lot of progress during hunts than it is to try and sneak in around and avoid them. That feels like the exact opposite of the way the game is supposed to be played.
