@@DanialDEcool Yes, and most scripted medical dramas take their cue from actual cases. From the March of Dimes: "If you take HIV medicines throughout pregnancy, labor and birth, and give your baby HIV medicines for 4 to 6 weeks after birth, the risk of passing HIV to your baby can be 1 in 100 (1 percent) or less. If you have HIV that's not treated, you can pass it to your baby: Before birth through the placenta." This situation isn't that rare with HIV-positive mothers.
I agree that she should have taken precautions but my uncle and his partner both had full blown aids and did nothing to prevent it from transferring to their baby and there baby was born normal still is over 20 years later. It's not 100 % that the baby will be born infected even in real life

This is about the real life Christine Maggiore case. Tragically, her real-life daughter passed away at age three. Also tragically, she influenced Thabo Mbeki’s decision to oppose AZT treatment in South Africa and therefore indirectly influenced more than 300,000 deaths there.
@@jurisenpai yuuuurp. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer person. Her son didn’t catch it because, wait for it, there’s about a 75% chance of not passing HIV down to your kid. But AZT cuts that percentage to 8% or lower, and proper full modern retroviral treatment cuts it to basically zero.
Oh its really simple, Child protective services are regular people too, people who are lazy and try to find the easier way out. Imagine a child service agent looking trough the cases, seeing a serious hard case where he knows the parents will make it really hard on him, then he flips trough the cases a little more and sees a case where a teacher reported the parents because their kid slides on his knees during recess, lets do this case today, well leave the hard thing for "later"
What would they do, not that I agree on this case but it is well within her rights to refuse treatment and unfortunately this wouldn't change if she's pregnant, same with women who drink alcohol while pregnant, in fact I reckon they can sue you for not respecting their bodies integrity and I'm talking from a medical deontology sense not legal sense

Depends on the State, the only State that requires you to inform medical personnel is Arizona, and that I believe is only for dentists. Thirteen states have laws that require you to disclose that you’re HIV-positive to any other person before you have vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Some states can charge you with a crime if you don’t disclose your HIV-positive status to sex partners even if: You use a condom during sex. Your partner isn’t infected with HIV due to your sexual encounter. You take anti-retroviral therapy (ART) to control your HIV viral load and greatly reduce the risk of passing it to others during sex.

The fact that it's missing from this video is that if you are HIV positive and you take antiretroviral medication you can be undetectable. That means you're a viral load is so low that even with an HIV test it will come up negative. If you are undetectable that means you are un- transmissible. I'm thankful everyday he took his medication. Because he did, I have a life free from that virus, so did my mom. I had a hypertensive patient recently who was refusing to take care of himself. We got his BP down and he was cleared to go home. I was instructing him that he needs to start taking his prescribed BP meds, watch his diet and sodium intake, and follow up with a cardiologist. He said "nah I probably won't take the meds. I've had high blood pressure since high school." Man did I let him have it. "Sir, hypertension is nicknamed the silent killer because many people don't know they have it until it's too late." He asked, "what do you mean too late?" I replied "it's too late for us to save them. Uncontrolled hypertension is a major risk factor of triple A's or dissection, and those are fatal. But that's best case scenario. Worst is a disability." He clearly didn't get it, so I continued to explain. "You have a beautiful young daughter here, she has her whole life ahead of her. If you have a serious complication, like a stroke, and become disabled, what do you think happens here? She can't go to college, she has to take care of you. She can't start a family, she has to take care of you. She can't go out with friends, or party, or travel, or do anything because she has to take care of you. She feeds you, wipes your ass, changes you, drains your foley, cleans your pressure wounds, has to wake up in the middle of the night to make sure you're alive. She dragged you to our ER in the middle of the night, that tells me she cares enough about you to be there when you're disabled and can no longer do anything for yourself. Worst case scenario isn't that you lose your life, but she loses hers. Not for you I dont care about you, but for the sake of your daughter who dragged you here because she cares, take care of yourself." Sometimes you can't sugar coat anything, you gotta be real with these patients.

Knowingly passing HIV to others should be treated as murder or attempted murder.
California actually decriminalized it a bit.
Legally, wild statement.
Here in Massachusetts, it's illegal to knowingly pass not just HIV, but sometimes get fined and civilly sued for spreading other types of STDs as well. Of course you need to have evidence that they were in fact, previously aware that they were a carrier.

The scary part of this clip is this happens in real. people really think like this women. Had she took her medicine for her hiv her child would not have been infected. And I know this for a fact.
Woman*. Women is plural.
Had you used the right verb, "had taken" instead of "had took", more people would listen to you.

And yet EVERY BIT of the "SCIENCE" about COVID, and what they did to the population has now been proven WRONG!!! Nice how you completely have forgotten about that!
Belief is for religions
Facts are for science
Depends on the science, that's why there are such things as "theoretical" sciences. Your not wrong that belief is for religion, but there's plenty of "belief" in hoping our theories are correct in how we explain the universe, the difference between science and religion is more the aspect that if a scientist is proven wrong he accepts it, if a religion is proven wrong, well, depends on the person in both situations I guess.

Amen to him the fact that she is so calm about it is crazy like there is no emotion showing that she understands what the doctor is saying about her child
I stay in a hostel and one of my roomates had plastic surgery on her eye. Her doctor gave her an antibiotic cream , but she refused to use because she doesn't believe in conventional medicine. Instead she used a homemade vaseline cream bought from a aroma therapy & spiritual type of store. As result, her eye became infected and she was blaming the doctor and accusing him for botching her eye. 😅
Wow that is just wild😂😂😂
Wait... She believes in plastic surgery (natural??) but not antibiotics? Insane.
What a bone brain.
Tell your roommate to watch Skibidi Toilet
She doesn't believe in modern medicine.. but had cosmetic surgery. She's a special kind of stupid
People that do this should be charged.
Love his honesty. She will remember this day. Sad part is the child suffers for her ignorance.
I didn't know until after I gave birth that I have it. My mother has it and didn't bother to take the medicine while pregnant. Then she never told any of her children so i have no idea if my nieces or nephew have it but I do plan to get my child tested for it and still feel awful I didn't know until it was too late. This "mom" is being neglectful and reckless and needs to be charged
I certainly hope you tell your siblings to get their children tested. That's such a horrific thing for your mother to do. Has your father and your baby's father been tested or any subsequent partners? She may have infected so many people
@@NiaJustNia my sister's had already lost their kids to the state when I found out I had it my dad hasn't been able to accept it so he refuses to get tested cuz he thinks that'll make it go away and he has kids with a bunch of people and he has had partners since so we have no idea how many people she's infected because either we can't get a hold of people that need to get tested or they're currently unable to accept the fact that they need to be. That was the first John wick movie where he told off the mob bosses son!!
I wish doctors could speak to patients like this.
Just yesterday one of my pediatric patients came in with a similar mother . The kid was tested positive and on top of that the mother didn't give her ART . She tried to hide her status, only when we pressurized her she disclosed it. So pathetic
How disgusting... She fears death so much and won't get treated but it was completely ok for her to infect her kid and push them towards death.
Omg!! I can't even find the words... why?!?! Why, in this day and she, would anyone still think and say such things?!?!
The timeperiod between getting infected until you get sick varies a lot between people. 14 years is long but not uncommon. What people fail to understand is that you dont die from HIV/AIDS, you die from everything else because AIDS destroys the immune system
Now days unless you are neglecting your help or abusing your body, you don’t get sick anymore, not like back 20 years ago .
You will not be well if you have had HIV for 14 years untreated.
She would be charged criminally for every sexual partner she’s had and then probably the one’s they’ve had ect ect. Disgusting
ER one of the best shows..I have shed a few tears watching many thought provoking episodes 😢
Thats a good doctor honestly, Shame her for not doing research and to keep her child safe
She did her research and found that AZT kills people. Look up it's history. There is a reason it isn't used in America anymore.
That kick to the door! Thank you. I felt that. He said what a lot of people wants to say, "it was moronic and selfish"
I don’t care how she justifies herself as healthy she still damaged and out her kids entire lives at risk trying to prove a point
Not for yourself but for your family for your child
..
She should be charged with 3 counts of attempted murder and failure to disclose information
Isn't what the mother doing technically illegal? Anyone who has caught hiv/aids has a personal due diligence to not only be upfront ti having it, but to ensure they take measures to not give it to anyone else.
Depends on the state. New York, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington, and Illinois have all either lessened the penalty for or completely repealed the laws regarding knowingly giving someone HIV.
Its not illegal
Putting pride over listening to doctors to protect your child is just insanity
Another great "ER" moment. That show addressed so many real issues. Great writing and phenomenal actors!
That woman does not deserve to have her children if she truly believes she is in the right. People who intentionally don't take prevention measures like that without just cause, ie actual allergy to certain medications or ect. piss me off.
Even if I'm dealing with my health. I'll burn the world to the ground I'll do whatever to protect mine no matter how I feel as long as my baby is good
Just because your healthy doesn't mean you can't make others sick
The fact that it's missing from this video is that if you are HIV positive and you take antiretroviral medication you can be undetectable. That means you're a viral load is so low that even with an HIV test it will come up negative. If you are undetectable that means you are un- transmissible. That means you cannot pass the virus on to another person. Even with sex. So if you have the virus, please, get on the medication. My father was hiv-positive. I'm thankful everyday he took his medication. Because he did, I have a life free from that virus, so did my mom. Remember people undetectable means un- transmissible, un- transmissible means you can't transmit the virus. It means you'll test negative because your viral load is so low it cannot even show up on tests. Meaning you cannot pass it on. Please please don't be irresponsible!
This is one of the situations you don't stop the person.
I fully agree with him. She was only thinking of herself. SMH!
Wow! Never seen Sid so upset before😮
Oh shit I didn't know he voiced sid I can't unhear it now😂

Parents and people like that don't deserve to have kids and she should've been put in jail for child endangerment and neglect.
"You're infected?" Sounds same as "you killed his dog? "

I don't necessarily trust the medical industry or pharmacy industry either. That doesn't mean we shouldn't think things through when it comes to our health in the health of our children.
Myself as well (but have that background and in holistic/ alternative - massive research).
- That said re HIV/AIDS there are many other treatment plans now beside AZT
- There is NO cure (mega millions world wide have lost their lives)
- Many men refuse to "wear protection" in such cultures.
- In 2023 alone 39 MILLION globally!
(South Africa major pandemic)
(see my other post on my background in NYC AIDS Education and Research - health department)
Yeah.... you kind of sound the same as that woman 😅 what do you mean "you don't trust the medical field"? 🫣
I 100% get not trusting the people in the medical industry because there have been alot of cases... but science? Medicine? Trust those.

She willingly (maybe) infected her daughter with a disease
I, do not carry the HIV virus and I've been tested (got pregnant) but for anyone who does, there's no cure but there's treatments that makes it undetectable for your body so also for unborn babies and partners! I don't think it should be as stigmatized as it is and I feel seropositive people are usually responsible with their health
There's medication that can technically "stop" it, if taken with 72 hours of exposure (maybe 36 it's been awhile since I've been updated on the requirements)
@@MacabreAfterpartyunfortunately even that only pauses it, it can reactivate in certain situations
@ezrafriesner8370 It doesn't reactivate. It reduces the chances significantly. But like any medical situation, it's not always effective. Similar to plan B, while it's effective in 99% of cases, there's always that chance it won't work.

That little girl winds up on Dr. House's team YEARS later, when she's all grown up!
But why didn't the hospital asked her to do all the required tests when she was pregnant?
Maybe she didn't tell them, maybe she refused, maybe she didn't go to the same doctor twice...who knows. She obviously doesn't think it's a problem. She acts like she just carries the gene for red hair or grey eyes.
An HIV test isn't required for pregnant women. If she didn't disclose her status, there's nobody to blame but her.
@Phenobarbidoll. Facts! Std tests are not mandatory through private doctors but are through the government clinics hence poor communities appear to be a higher carrier but it's an inaccurate comparison
Maybe she didn't go for tests when she was pregnant as she does not "believe" in them.
I've been pregnant four times (my kids are now 23, 21, 19 and 17) and when I was seeing my OBGYN during each pregnancy, she routinely tested all pregnant patients for HIV/AIDS and STDs. That was years ago so it may have changed by now, but I was definitely tested. I don't remember if I had to sign paperwork giving consent or not, but I had no problem being tested.
She ends up testing and treating her son, giving him azt. She gets her daughter tested, but i dont remember if she was positive. I kno if she did test positive, she's treated too.
I have always been a fan of John's acting. He is great!
My husband has to take BP meds. They make him groggy in the morning so he hates it. He thinks because his blood pressure has been normal for some time (DUE TO THE MEDS!!) that he no longer needs it. He’s gone off it twice, both times jumping off cold turkey and his blood pressure spiking to crazy levels and him feeling like having a heart attack, and going to the hospital. After the last time I asked him “So we now understand WE NEED TO TAKE OUR MEDS RIGHT?” He’s likelya scolded child and sighs like “Yessss…..” So just last week, 2 years after the last hospitalization, he says, “I missed my pills for a couple days. I took them again and I’m so tired. My bp has been fine I don’t think I need them anymore.” Uhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!! I said the same lecture you wrote here…
She needs to be charged for criminal negligence even child endangerment
Its also illegal to do what she did and she would go to prison in the real world.
And she should be charged with neglect. It is no different than a person who knows. They have h I v and infect somebody sexually without letting them know people have served time for this.
Don’t they need to call CPS? Surely this would be child endangerment.
