Ditto was my first shiny Pokemon in Gold and until this year my only one, last month I found a shiny Tangela when I was searching for Ponyta, going to use it for my round 2 stadium run.

My first play through of Pokemon gold that I’m still currently playing through, I lost 3 times to Whitney and decided to train my Pokemon. As I was training at the grass down from Goldenrod city, I randomly encountered a shiny Drowzee and was so shocked but made my day
I saw a shiny on my first playthrough, it was one of the electrodes you defeat with Lance while in the rocket base. I thought it was a guaranteed thing and was so confused when it was never blue again.
I wanted an electric Pokémon for my team and luckily for me the egg that the old man gave me hatched into a Pichu, whats even better is that it turned out to be shiny.
pro tip: making sure the red gyarados is male and breeding it is a good way to get all kinds of shiny pokemon. alternatively I think there's some kind of weird glitch you can do that can turn dittos shiny? but i don't know much about it
OllyDGaming well you can breed it with pokemon like ekans which is also in the field egg group, basically just branching out into all the different egg groups from there
The gyarados thing dosent work. Why, you ask? Well, shinyness in gen 2 is based on IVs, the gyarados, however, is ALWAYS shiny, regardless if it has the correct IVs or not. So it can have wrong IVs, making the offspring have the normal 1/8192 chance of being shiny.
Maybe because Electrode is fast. If your Pokemon is slower than the enemy wild Pokemon then the chances that running away will fail goes up. Soft resetting is always consistent.
A Pokémon may not look shiny, but it might still the genes. As long as the defence and special stats are #A#A. So a ditto I caught in Pokémon red has EAAA genes. This means that while the ditto is not "shiny", it is genetically shiny and able to pass on shiny genes.
first time I encountered a shiny was on pokemon gold it was a miltank. this was before the internet so I didn’t know the importance. I ran away and learned a hard lesson later on in life lol
Same happened to me with a shiny ekans, I wanted to capture It because I thought it was a glitch or something but I didn't have pokeballs so just killed it. That's the only shiny I have encountered in my Life
I ran into a shiny Tangela today on my Crystal version on the 3DS virtual console. It decided to flee on its first turn. I was very upset. But this guide may be helpful for future reference.
uh... wow. thank you. i am literally shocked at the breeding values. that blew my mind. thank you nintendo for re releasing these games and making them relevent again :)
Thanks for making this guide, I'm getting on old copy of Pokémon Crystal soon and want to try and get everything as a shiny before the save battery dies which will be a massive task for me. Thanks a lot bro
I just realized that years ago when i had a gameboy I faced a shiny suicune. Sadly I did not even know about shinnies back then and thought its sprite was shiny cause he was the first legendary, I made it faint on accident.
I have a shiny female nidoran and have been trying for 2 weeks to hatch a shiny MALE nidoran. I have hatched shiny male Pokémon before with a shiny female parent but 200+ eggs and I’m loosing my patience.
This was commented three years ago, but did you ever get it? I have a shiny female jigglypuff and need to breed her to eventually get a shiny snubbull to access the field egg group (haven’t gotten the gyarados yet) and I’m trying to find out the best way to do it or if it’s even possible Edit: I think the problem was that Nidoran male and female were made to be two separate species. When the game was first released, it was very difficult to code a pokemon with big differences based off of the gender like how pyroar is with male and female. Because of this, you will only ever get female nidoran since the male is a completely different male only species. Since it is a male only species, it along with others such as Tyrogue and Tauros will never work with the egg breeding trick unless bred with shiny ditto
On my Gold version, I caught a shiny pidgey, krabby, and another i forgot. They were all obtained randomly such as surfing, smashing rocks or walking through grass. I messed up on the shiny noctowl and some others :( shiny pokemon were fun to catch after you finish the game with the pokemon league, beating red and catching the legendary pokemons.
One mistake I've noticed in this video. The baby Pokemon hatched from the odd egg can only be female, so you cannot hatch Pokemon of other breeds to get other shiny Pokemon.
I was actually using an action replay back on my Emerald version years ago. It made every encounter into a mewtwo. I went surfing, got an encounter, and a cheated mewtwo ACTUALLY TURNED UP SHINY. Still have it.
Hey I hatched a nidoran male that has 10 across all. it's stats . Why is it not shiny???? Also I've hatched 100 eggs already am I doing something wrong?? They're both diff OT and it's a shiny ditto and nidoking breeding 😭😭 helpppp
The first shiny in Silver for me was a shiny tentacool. I thought it was a glitch due to low battery. Fearing that the save file might got corrupted I turned it off and changed batteries. So yeah, how naive of me.
No. Shiny-ness is determined in different ways in gen 2 vs gen 4. That is why you cannot trade gen 2 Pokémon to gen 3 Pokémon games, they redid the stats and everything so if you traded a shiny or even just a male Pokémon it wouldn’t grantee it would stay shiny or male because it’s just using a different format.
So.... I saw this video after spending several hours trying to get an odd egg shiny pichu in Pokemon Crystal which honestly is really fun. But the odds of 1/128 when breeding with a shiny, why is it then 1/64. Is that because it’s 1/128 for a single gender. So it’s 2/128 which turns into 1/64. Or is it only when you breed two shiny Pokemon. Which is kinda pointless unless you want a shiny living dex
When I was 11 or so, my friends at school were spreading this rumor that if you used the Squirtle bottle in the altar at ilex forest during nighttime Celebi would show up, gullible young me believed every word of it and spent hours trying to make it work. Out of the blue, in one of the random encounters a shiny noctowl showed up, I wish I could say I caught it but instead the shock of finding a shiny plus my muscle memory of running away from Pokemons that weren't Celebi for the past 3 hours made me run from the battle without thinking. I regret running from that battle to this day, I would've been the coolest kid of my school having a shiny noctowl like Ash did in the show.

More than 15 yrs. ago when I was playing my gold version, I encountered a shiny pokemon in the grass area in Mt. Silver. I think it was a Paras, can't remember. Was in total shock..
Just noticed this. Wouldn't it be impossible to get a shiny egg from a male Shiny Pikachu and female normal Eevee? The shiny baby will, without fail, be the opposite gender of the shiny parent. Therefore, the shiny Eevee would have to be female, since the shiny parent is male. However, no Pokemon with a 7 males to 1 female gender ratio, such as Eevee, can be shiny if said Pokemon is female. Only male Eevees can be shiny in Gen 2. Why? Because a female from a species of this gender ratio can have a max Attack DV of 1, whereas any Gen 2 shiny has a minimum Attack DV of 2.
Also, the 2 Charizards shown, one shiny and the other normal, would not be able to produce a shiny in Gen 2. The shiny Charizard is male, since female shiny Charizards are non-existent in Gen 2 due to the 7:1 gender ratio. Since the shiny Charizard is male, no shiny will ever be produced, since a shiny baby would have to be female, and shiny female Charmanders are non-existent in Gen 2 due to the 7:1 gender ratio.
what about the togepi egg given by M.Pokemon ? Eggs are pre-determined when we pick it up from the daycare, but this one was actually given by a NPC as a part of the story/quest, so I wonder, could it work with soft-reseting just before it hatches ?
What about shiny hunt for Unown? Only 2 Unown letters that can be shiny are I and V. By visiting only the lower right chamber and solving the puzzle only there you will unleash only 5 unown letters and one of them being V. This greatly increase a chance for shiny by choosing from limited pool of IVs. If you want letter I you visit only right top chamber that unleashes 11 unown letters including I.
Realjustjake s It will be 1/128. The reason is because the baby needs to be the opposite gender of the shiny parent. Since the gyarados is always male, only the female eggs will ever have a chance of being shiny. Since the egg will have a 50% chance of being female, it lowers your chances from 1/64 to 1/128
If the other parent is a Ditto, the baby will always have Ditto's Defense and its Special will remain or differ by 8. If the Ditto isn't shiny or doesn't have 10 Defense DVs and 2 or 10 Special DVs, it will never produce a shiny.
I'm at my 5th or 6th replay of Crystal. I also played main games from every generation up to BW2. And litterally NEVER encountered any shiny pokemon. Not a fucking single one(other than red Gyarados in Crystal and HG).
Hahaha I remember when I was a kid and I got a Shiny Tyrogue from the egg from Goldenrod City, THAT WAS Crazy Much later I got a shiny golduck and a Shiny ursaring when I was hunting for a shiny larvitar on Mt. Silver
Ditto breeding will always result in an offspring of the kind of the other pokemon, regardless of its gender. That means, breeding shiny ditto with female larvitar or male larvitar will give you the same chances of getting a shiny.

Hey, I don't intend this to be an attack, but the odds you gave for non-shiny parents is actually impossible. Since the Defense DV is always passed down and Special either remains the same or differs by 8, you can only use a Pokémon whose Defense DV is 10 and its Special is 2 or 10.
bro i have a question if i have a shiny male quilava with a normal female farfetch, which are my odds?, because i have that quilava by SR and i want a shiny farfetch but i dont know if i have a chance of getting it, and yes they are giving me eggs.
Billie Shay so on the stats page if you look in the upper right corner you will see either blank space or a cluster of what looks like glitter. If you see the glitter then it's a shiny. Good luck hunting!
Is the 1/8192 calculation from the possible stats of the Pokemon? I can't seem to get that right with all the possible DVs and Special Attack and Special Defense being the same stat and HP being dependent on all of them. What do I put in my calculator if I'm using that to calculate for me?
There's no such thing as chain breeding in gen 2, or any other gen for that matter. You just need to keep breeding and eventually you'll get your shiny.

So if I breed my shiny Gyarados with a ditto. Will it be 1/64 or 1/128?
Realjustjake s It will be 1/128. The reason is because the baby needs to be the opposite gender of the shiny parent. Since the gyarados is always male, only the female eggs will ever have a chance of being shiny. Since the egg will have a 50% chance of being female, it lowers your chances from 1/64 to 1/128
If the other parent is a Ditto, the baby will always have Ditto's Defense and its Special will remain or differ by 8. If the Ditto isn't shiny or doesn't have 10 Defense DVs and 2 or 10 Special DVs, it will never produce a shiny.

Hey, can anyone tell me this: I'm soft resetting for shiny Eevee. Do you see the shinyness when you check a Pokemons stats?
Billie Shay so on the stats page if you look in the upper right corner you will see either blank space or a cluster of what looks like glitter. If you see the glitter then it's a shiny. Good luck hunting!
Is the 1/8192 calculation from the possible stats of the Pokemon? I can't seem to get that right with all the possible DVs and Special Attack and Special Defense being the same stat and HP being dependent on all of them. What do I put in my calculator if I'm using that to calculate for me?
Wait. Say i had a shiny male drowse and a normal femail abar, woild i still have better odds
Colbin Trew yes
For soft resetting what about shuckle?
I found a silver crabby and evolved it to a silver kingler
I breed at least 80 totodiles with a shiny ditto and noone of them is shiny :( help i broke the chain or starters need more breeding?
There's no such thing as chain breeding in gen 2, or any other gen for that matter. You just need to keep breeding and eventually you'll get your shiny.
@@alastar_scenestar yeah i know. But i was borried because i couldn't find a shiny totodile but fortunatelly i did it yesterday. I was really mad. Now i'm looking for a shiny turtwig in platinum x.x it takes too much time u.u
Is it possible to use the Shiny Gyarados (male obviously) with a pokemon that has a compatible egg group to make shinies?
Yes
can i get a shiny MALE pokemon through shiny breeding?
i got shiny dratini, ekans, qwilfish from breeding with red gyarados, but they're all females.
is it possible to get another shiny male through this method then?
Breed your shiny female with another pokemon. I'd go for the Ekans because Shiny Arbok is cool...
Yesterday I just found a shiny wooper
But no pokeballs!
What about shuckle??
