  • Converting a cheap Harley benton into a decent Gibson Les Paul Special DC type thing
I have too many guitars and couldn't justify another Gibson (I have four). I saw a cheap B stock Harley Benton DC FAT and thought it might be easier to use that as a base for a project, rather than a kit. I never sell my guitars this is just for me, i'm comfy with its fakeness, the headstock shape isn't accurate.
I'm no expert at woodwork, the finish isn't exactly AAA, but arguably better than my 25 year old SG. This guitar is a dream to play, mahogany body and neck, ebony fretboard, now with Grover locking machine heads, Bare Knuckle pups, bone nut, CTS 500k pots, Orange drop cap, my new go to guitar for noodling and cleans. Fuzzes up in a really nice lairy way too.
Rather than a Gibson Logo i wanted "Goblin" but couldn't find one.
It's nearly my ideal guitar, the SG body ergonomically is better when sitting, but the neck on this is nicer and better balanced. It's more comfortable than my Les Paul and lighter but still has that bottom horn that's a bit short and slides off your leg when sitting.
Did it need all these mods, nope, is it better, yep, would it look better in TV Yellow, yup, black plastics, maybe, easy to swap...

Great job! Not only did you end up with a terrific guitar, you've bonded with it through sweat equity and saved a bunch of money! That's what I call living life.

Great job! May I ask you how you finished the wood on the upper side of the headstock? Did you find a yellow paint that match with the rest of the guitar?
