Thus, forming a stud that can be installed and removed with a flathead screwdriver. I am sure you must have extra bridge screws. I will try Gary. Thanks for your continued suggestions. I'll try and collect some examples and do this. There are several considerations. First is the cost to acquire, second is the cost to repair, and the third is what value you can add in servicing the reel that will enable you to profit. Let's see what I can get. penn senator 3/0 112h 2 yesterday 12-12-2020 I was fishing and my reel started to fail as it has a little jump when I'm winding the line. before it did not. I need to repair thank you very much.
Hard to say what is causing it, but it may be trapped, broken line or a broken part inside - You do need to open it up and see what is going on - Dennis
Where is it bent? If it is bent on the handle blank, you can put that in a vice to straighten it. If it is bent on the knob shaft, best to leave it alone or replace it with another handle if it is difficult to crank - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle Thank you so much. I feel lucky to have acquired the Senator and Slammer rod at a good deal. And my luck increased finding your video. Thank you for the answer. New subscriber!
Thanks for putting up these videos. They are very helpful. Presently, I'm trying to take a Penn 113HLW apart but ran into a very stubborn handle nut, the Penn proprietary one. Despite my buying this reel new over 30 years ago, I don't have the special wrench. I think I only used the reel once or twice all those years ago. I ordered what I think is the right wrench (Based on the images in my Penn owner's manual.) from an Ebay seller, but it won't be here for a few days. I tried channel locks, as well as an open-end combo wrench, which almost worked, but it wouldn't budge. I'm about to spray some PB Blaster back behind the drag star in the hopes it loosens something up. Do you know of any socket type tool that will fit this Penn nut? Or any other trick? Thanks again. Cheers.
I am not aware of a socket for that screw. Yes. penetrating oil may help loosen it. I assume you have removed the lock down screw. Spray it with the oil and if you can wait for the wrench, do it a few times. If it is still stubborn when you get the wrench, you can extend the wrench handle with a pipe that has an internal diameter wider than the wrench head. Simply slide the pipe over the wrench and the longer handle will give you more leverage to remove that stubborn screw - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle Thanks for responding. Yes, the lock-down screw was out. One never knows though, does one? ;-) The specialized Penn-nut wrench came today and it worked fine. There was a second when I thought I might have to reach for some sort of cheater, but it released before I did. This reel is marked as a "Penn Senator II" and 113 HLW. It is a bit different from the other 113HLW series schematics show. It has what I'll call a "top hat" piece under the drag star. The flat bottom of it sits on the final drag washer,. The top is a cylindrical spacer/collar to move the handle away from the reel body. Rather strangely, it does not have the spacer that limits lateral movement anywhere. That movement is limited by the bottom, washer, part of this "top-hat" piece. Thanks again for your videos. The are a big help. Cheers.
I just watched your other video on what was an earlier Senator 113H. It had the the part that I referred to, and that is part of a system that allowed the drag stack to be R&R'd without removing the spool, etc.
Hi Dennis, love the videos. Could the tarnished look on the chrome actually be the brass showing from beneath where the chrome has worn? I fixed up my Grandpap’s old Levelwind 350 (thanks to your video!) that’s gotta be 60 years old. The chrome was so corroded that some of it just sloughed off when I put the steel wool to it, and it has that tarnished look now, too.
Yes - that is the metal showing under the chrome plating. You can leave it alone. No need to re-plate it. Just keep it clean after use to avoid further corrosion. Dennis
Dennis, I just got a 113H 4/0 that's on its way. I plan to fish it, and not get restore into mint shape. There looks to be some light oxidation and imperfections in the rings and spool. I have chlorinated brake cleaner (red CRC can) around already. If I disassemble, can I soak the metal in the brake cleaner and then hit with 0000 steel wool?
I would go with the 0000 still wool and a metal polish like tarn or turtlewax chrome cleaner. Some of those auto cleaners have acids, lye and other chemicals that may be too harsh or dissolve or stain some finishes. The rings are chromed, so stay with the metal polish for the best results - Dennis
I just was given a reel like that that needs a good cleaning, what chemicals did you use on the metal parts please? I will clean the outside first, the go inside.
I use Turtle Wax Chrome cleaner and 0000 steel wool for cleaning the details. The only "chemical" I use is #Flitz metal precleaner which is a urea based cleaner that works great - Dennis
Thanks. Great video. I have an older Black 4/0 (likely from the 1950's) that is in great shape but has been sitting for decades. I decided to put it back into service and noticed that the eccentric lever position is opposite my other 4/0 reels. When the level is pushed forward the reel is in free spool mode which is opposite of my Red 4/0 reels. Is this by design or did someone long ago reverse something during a repair? Thanks
This is by design. The older reels had the lever in the 11 O'Clock position and the newer ones were mover to the 2 O'Clock position which made the throw opposite. I understand that they wanted to move that free spool lever because it was getting hit when folks went to adjust the star drags under a fighting fish. Moving the lever to the front of the reel was suppose to resolve that issue - Thanks for asking - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle Dennis: Thanks for the prompt reply and knowledge sharing. I will clean up and lube the reel and will likely replace the drag washers since they are original.
Hi Dennis: I have started the rebuild of my old Black 113 and disassembled the reel. I carefully followed your recommendation to not to lose the small anti-reverse spring. I even bought a new spring just in case I lost the old one. To my surprise, my reel appears to not have that small spring but instead it has a bent copper strip about one inch long, 0.076 wide and 0.006 thick which appears to be the anti-reverse spring for this reel. Not what I was expecting. I looked at some online schematics and always see the typical spring...not a bent copper strip type spring. Have you even seen this in another reel? If so, can I just install a new spring (PN 14-99) in some fashion or do I have to stay with the existing copper strip spring? I will have to figure out how that was placed in the reel if I need to use it since it moved when disassembled. Thanks for all your help.
After further inspection late last night I determined how the spring was originally installed and the reel is now back together with a new drag stack and working great. I now understand why Penn redesigned the anti-reverse mechanism decades ago! It was a PITA to get that old anti-reverse spring to stay in place during reassemble.
Yes - the flat spring was common on most Penn conventional reels prior to 1958, when they switched to the coil spring. You can watch how to install the spring here ua-cam.com/video/6P0nX4dHeEw/v-deo.html I believe these springs are still available, but in limited supply through Mysticparts.com - Dennis
I recently acquired a 4/0 special. It has the drag stack access by just removing the crank handle. It has the thick black washers. I was wanting to upgrade it to the HT100's. Do I have to buy additional washers to complete the upgrade? Great video. Thank you.
Yes - you will need additional Ht-100 and metal washers. I think Mysticparts.com sells the conversion kit and includes both the metals and fabric washers - Dennis
Thanks Keith. I use a fixed camera and close-up are a problem sometimes. Here is a video I did on the spring by itself. Hopefully it shows in better detail. Stay say and stay well - Dennis ua-cam.com/video/qTb04jiHS0o/v-deo.html
great vid Dennis. Question: when I pulled off the main gear, the drag stack was literally seized into a single unit and I was unable to get it out of the main gear housing. Any tricks for getting it out or do I just buy a new drag stack and main gear? The reel is a Made in USA 113H Senator Special vintage 1970. Thanks.
Yes, there is a way! Turn the main gear upside down on your workbench. You will see the flat sides of the metal washers. inside the hole. They will extend further out than the round holes of the fabric washers. Get a small flat blade screw driver or small punch or another tool that can go through the hole and rest on the metal washer. Gently tap the washers one side at a time and you should be able to move them to the top of the main gear. You can then remove them one by one as they "top" off. repeat tapping from underneath as needed until you have tapped all all of the washers up and out. If the metal and fabric washers are stuck together when they come out, you can separate them using a utility knife as a wedge. If you try that, please be careful and remember it is a knife!!! Let me know if that helps Dennis
Dennis, Just got a new old stock left Hand 4/0 But it seems that the spool is very wobbly (wobbles from side to side) 1/4 inch about. What could the problem be? I tightened the oil center plug but the spool still seems loose. What am I doing wrong?
There should be some side to side play. If there is a lot, and you have tightened the non-handle side bearing/adjuster, then you likely have a broken bearing on the handle side or in the non-handle side adjuster. You can get the replacement bearings at mystic parts.com if you determine that is the cause - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle thanks Dennis turned out to be the bearing adjuster needed to be tightened. But I had to use some pliers to get it to screw in almost al the way. I’ve never needed to do that, they were always hand tightened. I have several 4/0’s so I tried a few from the other reels and found that for some reason non of them would tighten up by hand in this particular reel. I needed to use pliers to tighten them all on this reel. But with other reels they tightened all the way by hand. What do you think that could be? The reel has never been used based on my observations so I’m scratching my head. Maybe some slight rust or maybe no oil on the threads? Again it would screw in half way I would say and then could not be tightened anymore by hand. Have you ever seen this?
It is most likely broken. The spring has a tag end with a hook that attaches to the eccentric cam and the other end rests in a groove on the side plate. Check to see that both ends are attached. It they aren't then the spring is broken and would need to be replaced. Dennis
I got a 113h2 i serviced and i thought the drag was not working but what is happening is the shaft is spinning in the spool, is there a way to fix this or do i need a new spool ?, is this a common problem with the newer reels as i have never seen this problem before ?
Watch this video and it should be enough to show you how. I/m not sure if your spring mounts to the left or right, but the process is the same ua-cam.com/video/kYxdWQZxm3U/v-deo.html. Thanks for asking
Was just wondering why after changing out my drag washers on a 112h senator is there is no drag when in the lock position. It's like the real is in free spool all the time ?
It is possible that the earned washer came out of the slot on reassembly. Assuming you have all of the metals and drag washers in place, this would be the first place that I would check - Dennis
Glad to hear that it helped. Sometimes I forget I am making a video of these and revert to back habits and camera angles. I'm trying to do better in the more recent ones. Please stay tuned for more to come. Thanks for watching - Dennis
I know this is an older video but, I’ve taken apart 2 PENN special senators 4:0 and serviced and oiled them both and both of them now do not work because of this smaller thick washer that comes off when I remove the spool
Jaden - go to Mysticparts.com and get the 4/0 schematic. It is located in the Penn Parts section under conventional reels. It sound like you have something out of order, so check to make sure the that is correct. Also make sure that the earned mewl washer is sitting in the grooves of the main gear. - Dennis
Hard to define a "little". there is a step anti-reverse gear in the reel, so a brief step is OK. If it is a quarter to a half or more back bed dal before it grabs then, no, that is not normal. The most common cause would be a worn anti-reverse dog or a weak dog spring. Both are relatively inexpensive and available through Mysticparts.com. If you would like me to do it, you can send me a not to my email - 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com - thank you Dennis
2nd Chance Tackle yes I believe i would say a brief step back as i can look at the gear and see where it’s falling in to lock in place i guess, if I’m making any sense
@@2ndChanceTackle Hello Dennis, I have a penn113h reel, the anti reverse is not working,..... Maybe the dog spring is missing or worn out????. I would like to send it your way so you can put it back in service, can you please send me your info! Thank you.
Yes. The purpose of the drag grease is to keep them flexible. If you do not, they will wear quicker and could become brittle and crack over time. I use Cal's universal drag and reel grease for the drags. If you do not have that, but have a grease designed for fishing reels, go ahead and do that. Apply a light coat of the grease to the drag and work it in with your fingers to make sure it is an even coating on both sides. I recommend using a latex glove to protect your fingers. Thanks for asking - Dennis
I believe they are asbestos or an asbestos like material. Most of these older ones shared a lot of parts, so they ar in several different models. As an example - the drags from the 6/0 are in the Mariner 349. The drags from the 4/0 are in the Mariner 149/249. and so on. I'm not sure which Internationals you are referring to so I can't say for certain, but it is a possibility - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle Dennis if there is a suspicion of asbestos you should probably be using a glove on your other hand as well since asbestos is highly carcinogenic ,just a friendly advice.
Thank you for the advice. I don't see this much anymore as the design changed almost 50 years ago, however, an ounce of prevention! Best wishes - Dennis

Do you mean the Penn Sailfisher 130? Wow - I haven't seen one of those in years. The reel is basically the same as the older Penn 4/0 black side plate reels with the large drag hole in the side plate. If that is the reel you mean, I will do the next one to come in....may take a few years! - Dennis

I love all your videos, but not this one. You seem to just rush like crazy through it. I had to stop and rewind several times and often still did not get my answer. As you know the 113H has several slight variations and mine has a totally different drag. You said "this is a 6 washer drag" then opened it and said "no its an 8" My drag was totally different and parts you pulled out in less than a second I played with for 10 minutes and decided If I pulled them out I'd have to beeak something to do so. I wish you'd redo this showing various 113Hs and go slower. I appreciate all your vids and apologize for complaining but thought you'd appreciate knowing...thanks
I do appreciate the feedback and I am always looking to improve my channel and presentation. I think my fault with the Penn Reels is that they are too familiar, so I can fo these fast. I will try to do one at a slower pace for everyone's benefit Thank you Dennis
OK - I haven't had one lately, but should see one soon. It's that time of year. I will add it to my list and do the next one that comes in my shop. Thanks for asking - Dennis
The red sided 112H is a 3/0 size reel. The red side 113H is a 4/0 reel. It’s not a collar. Its called a yoke. Its not a transition piece its called a jack. These videos show you how to take them apart and put back together but the practice he uses is terrible. All parts should be removed, cleaned, greased, and placed in position correctly. You grease the bridge screws first them put them in the side plate. Grease the yoke, jack, eccentric, pinion gear before putting in place. Remove the gear sleeve from the bridge, grease the post, and install the gear sleeve. Grease under the rings and all screws so there will be no corrosion.
Dennis does a fine job with these reels he has serviced my penn reels and they work perfect he’s been doing it for many years maybe you should start a reel repair channel to much grease is worse than no grease a little dab will do

Thanks for the video. Just acquired 113H2 senator. The handle is bent a tad. What should I do?
Florida Fishing Woman😊
Great video!! Thank you!
You are welcome. Thanks for watching - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle Thank you.
@@2ndChanceTackleOh, also, how about the metal internals? Ok for that stuff?
should the spool have a little play in it? mine has a gap between the spool and plate.
yes it should have a limited amount of side to side play
I just was given a reel like that that needs a good cleaning, what chemicals did you use on the metal parts please? I will clean the outside first, the go inside.
I use Turtle Wax Chrome cleaner and 0000 steel wool for cleaning the details. The only "chemical" I use is #Flitz metal precleaner which is a urea based cleaner that works great - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle Thank you, I have a Senator 3.0. Will penn have a few screws for outside of reel?

Dennis:
Thanks for the prompt reply and knowledge sharing. I will clean up and lube the reel and will likely replace the drag washers since they are original.
Hi Dennis:
I have started the rebuild of my old Black 113 and disassembled the reel.
When you install the dog spring we need a close up. It seems to be that way on all videos.
Thanks Keith. I use a fixed camera and close-up are a problem sometimes. Here is a video I did on the spring by itself. Hopefully it shows in better detail. Stay say and stay well - Dennis

great vid Dennis.
Let me know if that helps
Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle Thank you Dennis. I'll give it a shot and will let you know if I have any success.
Dennis, Just got a new old stock left
Hand 4/0
But it seems that the spool is very wobbly (wobbles from side to side) 1/4 inch about.
Sometimes the threads get banged up and it makes it hard to turn them. Glad you were able to get yours adjusted - Dennis
Hey ,I have a Penn 4/0 but
The free spool spring looks like it's loose..
I can't tell it's just out of place or it's broken.. thanks..have good day
It is most likely broken.
That would be unusual. If needed, you will have to replace the spool. - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle thanks !
Ok the sccentric spring wasn't put on Right on my 4/0..how do I do it??
I'm taking it apart very carefully.. thanks.
Watch this video and it should be enough to show you how. I/m not sure if your spring mounts to the left or right, but the process is the same
ua-cam.com/video/kYxdWQZxm3U/v-deo.html.
Great video, a little too fast with the rebuild and at times the reel is out of sight, but it worked for me.
- Dennis
I just got one at pawn shop but they put wire the one to weld do u know how much line it take ?
Yes - here is a range on mono yards/pound test
440/30
370/40
270/50
Hello;
Where can I buy a set of drag washers for the standard black side plate 4/0 Senator reel circa 1960's reel?
You can get them through Mysticparts.com - Call them if you have any questions - Dennis
But what if the spool has side to side slop with the bearing all the way in?
Then there is a good chance that the gear side bearing in bad. Those are the two pieces that control the side to side movement - Dennis
I just bought a used 4/0 senator 113hl and it spins backwards a little, as far as the anti reverse should it be doing that is this normal?
Brief sounds normal.
@@2ndChanceTackle Hello Dennis, I have a penn113h reel, the anti reverse is not working,..... Maybe the dog spring is missing or worn out????. I would like to send it your way so you can put it back in service, can you please send me your info! Thank you.
Where do you order new gears for this reel
You can get new gears at Mysticparts.com they are an authorized Penn Parts distributor - Dennis
Thanks sir. Very helpful video. Best of all I 've watched . By the way should i grease drag washers ?
Thanks for asking - Dennis
aren't those old drag stacks made out of asbestos? like the ones used on older internationals
Hi. For sure your vids are helping many anglers. I have a Penn senator 4/0 special 113 h but I don't know its capacity (series). For e.g. a Shimano 2000,2500,6000 etc. Any Help. Thx. From mauritius.
I have that same reel. The capacity is 475 yards of 30# monofilament or 434 meters of .56mm line

@@2ndChanceTackle thx. What is the drag force limit ?
The max drag on these reels is 19 pounds according to the Penn website - Dennis

I will try to do one at a slower pace for everyone's benefit
Thank you
Dennis
It must be a simple mistake because I’ve done it twice now
No International 130 st two speed
👍
He Probably didn’t ask you because he doesn’t give a dick what you think
Dennis does a fine job with these reels he has serviced my penn reels and they work perfect he’s been doing it for many years maybe you should start a reel repair channel to much grease is worse than no grease a little dab will do
